Ending One

A commotion came from outside the chamber door. Kagome stared at the door in fear. "What's happening?"

"I don't know." Inuyasha replied and drew a sword. Quickly he made his way across the room just as the doors burst open.

"I know you're in here!" A rather angry looking white haired Inuyasha growled, looking around the room he just entered. His eyes rested on Kagome and he moved swiftly to retrieve her. "Come on, Kagome. We're leaving."

"You can't do that!" The lord answered, catching the hanyou's attention. "By the gods… you do look exactly like me."

"Who the hell are you?" The hanyou replied, holding Kagome's hand, ready to bolt.

"I'm… Lord Inuyasha. This is my palace. You hold my wife. Are you what I would have looked like?" The lord drew closer to the hanyou, fascinated at the white hair and dog ears.

"Your wife? Kagome isn't married to anyone." Inuyasha barked back, feeling annoyed that this… human looking hanyou was checking him out.

"I married her. She's my wife." The lord reached up to touch the hanyou's ears.

"Don't DO that!" Inuyasha snarled, batting the lord's hand away.

"Inuyasha…" Kagome whispered, holding the hanyou's hand hard to get his attention. "Lord Inuyasha is cursed until he marries the one that was intended to be his bride."

"What does that have to do with you?" The hanyou shook his head with incomprehension.

"Kagome was my intended." The lord answered, satisfied with his inspection of his other self.

"No! She's not your intended. Tell him, Kagome." The hanyou pleaded. "Tell him you aren't."

"She told me she wasn't… but she also fit the description of the one that is to be my bride." The lord folded his arms across his chest, looking very much like his counterpart in classic moments. "And the curse still isn't lifted. We must…" His voice faltered, finding the hanyou's hard gaze a bit hard to bear.

"You must WHAT?" The hanyou demanded.

"Consummate the marriage."

"NO!" Inuyasha pulled Kagome roughly towards the door. "We're leaving."

"You can't leave. To leave is to die… until the curse is lifted." The lord started after them. "Everyone will die."

"I'd rather die than let you touch her." Inuyasha shot back, pulling Kagome against him.

"She told me about the other woman you love." The lord stared at his counterpart, holding his wife securely in a clawed hand. "You don't love Kagome the same way, do you?"

"Of course not. They're different people." Inuyasha glanced down at Kagome in irritation that she could speak their secrets to a stranger. "That's none of your business."

"She loves you and you love another."

Inuyasha turned around, meaning to hit his counterpart. "Shut up!"

The lord ducked and continued to stare hard at the hanyou. "It's the truth. You don't love her the way she deserves. I CAN."

Inuyasha made another swipe and managed to knock the other down, but not without losing his balance. They landed in a pile of pillows. "She's MINE, you bastard. Touch her and I'll kill you."

The lord pushed against his counterpart. "Would you say the same thing about your other woman? Is she yours too?"

Inuyasha punched the lord in his nose.

"Inuyasha! STOP!" Kagome cried.

Both males looked at her. "Kagome…" The lord breathed. His counterpart readied to hit him again.

"Osuwari!"

The white haired hanyou fell rather ungracefully on top of his double. "You bitch!"

The lord pushed the other off of him and sat up. "Don't call my lady names!" His fist punched the hanyou in the shoulder.

"My lord…" Kagome stared at the ground, unsure what to say.

"I know… you love him." Gently he reached out to touch her cheek. "I've been waiting to be with you all my life, anticipating how you would look… my imaginings pale in comparison to your true beauty. I'm glad I got to meet you." Leaning forward, he kissed her lips. "When you're lonely… think of me. I'll be with you."

Finally the hanyou managed to pull himself up off the ground. "Come on, Kagome. We're going." His hands caught Kagome under the arms.

"Kagome!" The lord reached out to her, passing her a ring. "Think of me."

Kagome stared back at him, finding herself being pulled out the door. The look on the lord's face was one of total decimation. "I will."

The lord looked up and met her eyes with his own. Giving her a small smile, he watched her get whisked away.

Once away from the lord's chambers, Inuyasha changed his hold on Kagome so he could run faster. Guards stared at him in surprise and looked back to their master for orders, but none were given. Inuyasha was allowed to run away with his prize. The hanyou never spoke the whole way back to the forest. Stopping at the well, he pulled her onto his back before jumping in.

Looking back the moment before they descended into the darkness, Kagome watched the lord's lands waver, as if they had been a mirage. The forest disappeared and the palace beyond… all was lost. All was dead.

Epilogue

"We aren't dead." Inuyasha sat down beside the stream. "He said we would die too… and we didn't."

Kagome played with the ring in her hand. "But they're all dead. I saw them… as we left."

"Kagome…" Inuyasha turned to regard her. "I…" Shaking his head, he looked away. "We couldn't stay there. It wasn't our place."

"We could have found a way to break the curse for them." Kagome clutched the ring in her hand as tears streaked down her cheeks.

The hanyou looked away, uncomfortable with her tears. "The only way was for him to… to… I can't…"

"All those people…" The girl continued to wipe at her tears.

"Not one of them stopped us." Inuyasha stared dully at the grass. "He had guards and soldiers… none of them gave chase."

"He knew we would live." Kagome whispered. Something called to her from the back of her mind. "And he gave up everything… for me." Tears refreshed themselves on her cheeks as she fell onto her side, crying. "He loved me."

Slowly Inuyasha got up on his hands and knees and crawled to her. His hand touched her shaking shoulder. "Did you love him back?"

"Inuyasha, I… love you. He knew that too."

His fingertips lightly touched her cheek a moment. Leaning down, he pulled her body into his arms and held her tightly against him.
