The Other Way Around
Chapter 3
Kagome arrived on the other side of the well-her time. She sighed, but with a smile. Oh, how her family was going to love this! Especially her grandfather……ya know, being in love with a demon assassin…he would just be thrilled with that wouldn't he? Kagome chuckled to herself quietly. Yes, she could just see Ji-chan's expression now…
Sighing once more, she climbed out of the well and walked to her house. Upon opening the door, she called out to her family.
"I'm home!"
Her mother appeared from the kitchen and smiled at her daughter. "Hello dear! Back so soon?" she chuckled "get in another argument with Inuyasha?"
Kagome shook her head with a small kind of roll-your-eyes smile. Kind of ironic her mother would ask that.
(You know what I mean right? It's kinda hard to explain, so you'll just have to envision it)
"Uh, no mom. Actually, it's kind of the other way around." She said.
(AN: Heh, I didn't even mean to make it like that. Weird coincidence ne? `The other way around'… that's funny)
"Oh?" her mother asked, eyebrow raised. "What do you mean?"
"Well, I just dumped him actually. I fell in love with Inuyasha's brother, he found out, and I dumped him, `cause he had dumped me for Kikyou but still wanted me. So he was just being a selfish…dog! And I was completely fed up with it! So yeah, I asked Sesshoumaru if I could come back to tell you all about this." Kagome answered, all in one breath.
Kagome's mother looked thoughtful for a moment before replying, "Oh, ok! So you fell in love with the older brother?"
Kagome nodded.
"But…isn't he the one who was out to kill you and your friends?" she asked slowly.
Kagome winced. She had been afraid of this. Why couldn't her mother just smile and nod? That would be a whole lot easier. She sighed. This wasn't going to be cake.
"Yes, but I swear he's different now! He's actually sweet, when he's not being an arrogant a-"
"Kagome…" her mother warned.
Kagome gulped, "okay, when he's not being an arrogant jerk. Better?" Her mother just smiled and nodded.
Kagome frowned a bit. Why couldn't she do that before?
Sato wondered about the whole story of her daughter's new love life. But she thought, much to Kagome's disdain, that the whole family, including grandfather, should here the tale. If her little baby was going to up and leave to live her boyfriend, then her family had a right to now who and where she was going, right?
(AN: Sato is Kagome's mother, if you haven't figured that out already. Sato means Sugar in Japanese. Hey, I thought it was cute!)
So Sato called her son and father into the living room and circled around Kagome, waiting to hear her story.
Kagome sighed. This might take awhile…and she wanted to get back to Sesshoumaru! Oh well, her family deserved the explanation. After all, isn't that what she came over here to do in the first place?
(AN: she just wasn't planning on telling it to the whole family. Just her mother…I guess. ;; Don't mind this chapter (or all of my new chapters, for that matter), I'm kinda getting used to writing all my stories again and I'm trying to rush and get these chapters out so you guys will be happy; so if the stories are crap or suddenly don't make sense, please tell me in the review or something and tell me so I can get everything back together. Thanks!)
Her grandfather peered at her with confused eyes, while her brother was looking bored; he kept glancing wistfully back at his room where he had left his precious video game on. Mrs. Higurashi was looking at her with a hopeful and expecting light in her eyes.
Kagome shifted uneasily and cleared her throat. "Okay, well, uh, Grandpa…and Souta, I came back to tell you that I was probably going to live with Sesshoumaru at his castle from now on." That caught Souta's immediate attention. Grandpa's eyes went wide and he started to object, but Kagome cut him off, "I'll still visit you probably like once every month or so, so don't worry!"
Grandpa sputtered then said, "of course you'll visit us, but you are going to live with Sesshoumaru? Isn't he the one who was out to kill you? And what of Inuyasha?"
Souta but in "Yeah! What happened to inu-no-nii-chan? I thought you liked him!"
Kagome sighed once more then explained to them "Yes, I did love Inuyasha, but not anymore. He went to Kikyou too many times to count so I was just fed up with it! Sesshoumaru happened to be there when I needed someone the most. We eventually became friends and then just last night we found out that we loved each other."
Souta made a face at the word love, while Kagome's grandfather just sputtered again. Sato just smiled. Ah love, one of most powerful emotions ever…
"So, how did you and Sesshoumaru become friends? Why was he nice to you? I thought you said he was a cold-hearted demon lord who hated all humans." Grandpa asked after awhile.
Kagome thought back, "Hmm…let me think…
Flashback
Kagome cried out her heart in the middle of the forest. Her head was buried in her hands and she sat on the cold dirt ground of her former love's forest. Her clothing was torn in some places and her hair had bits of leaves and twigs woven into it; all due to running through the foliage and wood blindly because of heartbreak.
(First AN: You know, INUYASHA is her former love, so it would be INUYASHA'S forest, just so ya know. Second AN: Um, does that whole paragraph even make ANY sense whatsoever?? I don't think it sounds good at all! I think it sounds really weird…hmm…maybe I should get someone to BETA my stuff. Is there anyone willing to BETA my stuff for me? I would be most grateful! )
Her heart felt like it had shattered and might never ever be repaired. Just how could he do that? Didn't he know that she cared for him? No, she guessed not, because any chance he got, he went to see Kikyou, his old and new love. Kagome didn't hate Kikyou though. She had done nothing to make Inuyasha choose his path, well except maybe for coming back to life in the first place, but that didn't really count.
Stupid Inuyasha…She sniffled and tried to hold back her tears. You aren't worthy of my tears. I shouldn't even be crying…but despite what she thought and her efforts of holding back the salty tears, she cried all the harder. Why Inuyasha? Why do you torment my heart like this? A grim smile passed over her face. Heh, maybe I should go to Kouga, just to piss Inuyasha off…She laughed bitterly. More tears rolled down her face.
Sesshoumaru was patrolling his lands tonight. Something nagged at him in the back of his mind, as if he was supposed to be out there that night. He was going somewhere, but he did not know where for sure. It seemed that his legs were leading him somewhere.
Soon enough he caught the scent of Inuyasha's forest. Why would he feel the need to go here? Sesshoumaru stopped in front of the Goshinboku and stared up at the place where his half-brother had been pinned. He had visited the place only twice when Inuyasha was in his slumber. At the time he would sneer at his brother and commend him on his stupidity for falling for the human woman that sealed him.
Now, though, he did not really care about how Inuyasha had fallen for a human. Because now, he understood them somewhat. He knew that not all humans were disgusting and idiots. No, he had Rin to thank for that. She was teaching him about the race of mortals little by little. He also had to thank Inuyasha's new woman for his understanding. She was different from all other humans he had encountered thus far. The woman was indeed unique. She mothered a youkai child, something that he had seen no other human do, she was more powerful than most, she was kind, smelled pleasant, and put up with idiocies like Inuyasha.
So lost in his thoughts, Sesshoumaru did not notice (at first) the scent that was wafting through the air around him. It was only when he had to he shake himself from thoughts that he would not allow about a certain woman that he noticed it.
It was a scent of deep sadness. It puzzled him, too. What being could be giving off such a strongly emanated sadness? Who could be in such a hurtful state of being?
Sesshoumaru followed the trail of emotion deep into the forest. What he came upon at the end of the trail surprised him. It was Inuyasha's woman!
Why is she so sad? He took note of her state of dress, what has happened to her? He decided to question her. A little part of him was irritated that she hadn't even sensed him, but he pushed it aside and said, "Girl."
He heard her gasp slightly then watched as her head shoot up and look at him with fear filled eyes. For some reason, Sesshoumaru's heart twisted a bit and his mind barely whispered please don't fear me…
"Sesshoumaru…" he heard her whisper.
He took a step forward and resisted the sudden urge to reach over a wipe her face of those damned tears. She crawled backwards out of fright. "What do you want Sesshoumaru?" Her voice wavered when she spoke.
Sesshoumaru's heart clenched a little once more when he saw how scared she was. He did not move, for of frightening her more. "What has caused you to be so sad?"
It startled him when she burst into more tears as the question reached her ears. What? What is the matter now? What do I do? Do I punish her for not answering my question or do I…comfort her?
He decided on the latter, even though he didn't really know how do accomplish that. He had never been one for trying to make others feel better. Hell, all he was used to was being a class A killer.
As he took steps towards her, she suddenly stopped crying. He stopped. What now? She stood up the looked up at him. Her eyes held a light of grim determination as she stared.
"Alright Sesshoumaru, just get it over with and kill me……Please…" she demanded. He was actually surprised at her request. Why does she want do end her life? Wait, why am I asking the questions about this? I should just demand my answers from her.
"No girl, I am not going to kill you. First, I want to know why you are crying." Her blue-gray eyes brimmed with tears, but she did not look away. Instead she asked, "Why? Why do you even care?"
"I am merely curious, now answer my question." He answered simply. He stepped closer; she didn't seem to notice.
Kagome sighed. "Fine, fine…" she sat down on a tree log behind her. She looked back up at her long time enemy and rolled her hand in a circular motion as if trying to recall something. "You know your brother, Sesshoumaru? That jerk Inuyasha? That's why I'm crying; because of him. I cared for him you know. But he just threw it in my face and broke my heart so he could go back to his old lover."
(AN: You guys know what I mean right? You know…rolls hand in circular motion that thing…when your indicating something or something…You know? Right? Oh well, whatever…)
Sesshoumaru bristled when he heard the brief explanation. How stupid had his brother gotten? And wasn't that woman from fifty years ago dead? How could Inuyasha be with her? "Miko, how is Inuyasha with the deceased woman?"
She looked away at the ground and sniffled. "Kikyou was brought back to my life by Uresea. Uresea stole part of my soul and gave it to a clay body that looked like Kikyou. Therefore, Kikyou was able to be brought back, but she only lives on hatred for Inuyasha and tries to take him to Hell with her at their meetings."
(AN: is that how you spell that old witch's name? I seriously have no clue, so could y'all enlighten me a bit please?)
"Do you hate them?" he questioned. She shook her head. "No, I don't think I could ever hate them. I can curse them though." She smiled ruefully. Sesshoumaru smirked.
Kagome was surprised when Sesshoumaru joined her on the little bitty log that she was resting on. What…?
He looked forward with a faraway look in his eyes. "Yes, I do not think it would be right for a creature such as yourself to hate. It wouldn't be fitting at all." He smiled slightly and looked down at her.
Kagome brain stopped working. Did Sesshoumaru, hater of all humans, my long time enemy, emotionless, evil, demon lord just smile? No, it must have been a trick of light or something…
"Sesshoumaru?" she asked hesitantly "Why are you being…nice to me? Don't you want to kill me?"
"No." was his reply. "I am just trying to…make you feel better"
(AN: OMG that was waaaaaaaaay OOC, wasn't it? I'm gagging. Lol)
Kagome's jaw dropped. What?!?! Something was definitely wrong with Sesshoumaru today. All the pressure of being a lord must've made him crack…….Or something like that. "Okay…whatever you say…" Then she something else popped into her mind. Oh yeah! I forgot! "Sesshoumaru? It's Kagome, by the way."
Sesshoumaru looked puzzled, as if to say, `huh?' But instead he just asked, "Pardon?"
(AN: more gagging)
"That's my name. You kept saying `miko' and `girl'. My name's Kagome."
"Kagome…"
End Flashback
"And from that day forward, we would meet every time Inuyasha went to Kikyou. After the first few days Sesshoumaru had given me this pendent" she indicated the item "so that I could contact him when I needed him." Kagome finalized. She looked around at her family, waiting for there reaction, well her mother's and grandfather's reactions; her brother had fallen asleep -the little brat.
Her mother beamed and got teary eyed muttering, "My little baby's growing up…falling in love…" Grandpa just didn't know what to say it seemed.
Kagome had a small smile on her face and said, "So…are you okay with this?" Her mother looked thoughtful and asked, "Well, only one question: does he make you happy?"
Kagome nodded, "Yes, he does. Very much."
Her mother seemed satisfied. "Well! That's good enough for me." Her grandfather was still unconvinced it seemed. "B-but, he's a demon!" Sato glared. "Oh, sush up. He makes her happy, and, apparently, he isn't all bad. He makes her happy, and that should be good enough for you, too!"
Grandpa cowered but then straightened and coughed into his hand. "Ahem, yes well, I was just making sure you were fine with it."
Kagome and her mother both just sighed and rolled their eyes.
End Chapter
