Chapter 10:
Inuyasha climbed out of Kagome's window, Hoping he wouldn't run into Kagome before he got back to his own time.
Kagome had finally pulled herself together enough to leave the well house. She climbed up the stairs, hoping Inuyasha wasn't on the other side of the door.
She approached the door and opened it. It slid open more easily than it did usually. Did gramps actually fix the door? Wondered Kagome.
Inuyasha opened the door of the well house; Did the old man actually fix it?
When the door cleared the entrance of the well house, Inuyasha and Kagome found themselves face to face, an awkward silence settling over the pair.
Inuyasha was the first to speak, “I didn't mean to do that, the thing in the car. I should have asked.” Inuyasha couldn't look her in the eyes, so he looked at a point behind her shoulder.
“Inuyasha,” Kagome's eyes were starting to water, “I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you. It was wrong.” Kagome broke down completely.
Inuyasha stepped forward quickly, embracing Kagome, “Its not your fault, its my fault. Its my fault for starting this whole mess in the first place.” Inuyasha held Kagome a little closer, hanging his head.
Kagome sobbed into his shoulder, unable to stop herself. “Inuyasha, don't you…?” she choked through her sobs.
“Don't worry, I'm right here, stupid.” Inuyasha said, trying to comfort her.
Kagome giggled, or rather tried to giggle through her sobs, “Inuyasha, want to know something?” Kagome still had tears running down her face, but a smile shone up at Inuyasha.
“Yeah I guess so, but I have to tell you something first.” He looked back at her, right into those big brown eyes. “I love you more than I ever thought I could. I don't know what I'd do if you weren't with me.” Inuyasha felt a lump form in his chest. He couldn't stop himself from saying it.
Kagome looked at him, shock written all over her face, her grip on his arm loosening. She pulled back a little. He really loves me.
Inuyasha's ears drooped when she pulled away, the hurt showing up on his face. I guess she doesn't love me. She just wanted to fix the jewel.
Inuyasha walked by Kagome, who was still trying to work out what happened. “Oh and Kagome, here.” Inuyasha tossed Kagome the jewel shards he had taken from Koga.
Kagome caught the shards, realizing what was going on. Inuyasha walked down the stairs, his chest felt like a gaping hole had been ripped in it.
“Inuyasha hold on a sec would you,” Inuyasha didn't turn around and stopped in front of the well, ready to jump in. I'm actually going to miss getting sat…
Kagome had had enough, “Inuyasha, SIT!” Inuyasha plowed into the ground, as was expected.
“What was that for!” he yelled at where Kagome had been. What the…
Kagome had pinned him in a sitting position, sitting on top of him. The smell of saline filled his nose, she was crying. Inuyasha didn't want Kagome to feel bad so he held her close. “Its ok if you don't love me.”
“But I do love you!” Kagome choked out, her face buried in his chest.
Inuyasha could feel his insides melt for joy. Kagome's tears were soaking through his robe, making it feel kind of like his insides really were melting.
Inuyasha didn't know what to apart from taking Kagome up to her room. He picked up Kagome in kind of a reverse piggyback with Kagome in front of him.
Inuyasha walked inside, Kagome still crying into his chest, her arms locked around his neck in a death grip. Mrs. Higaroshi looked at the two of them as Inuyasha climbed the stairs. Those two are so close; I hate to think of anything coming between them.
Mrs. Higaroshi went back into the kitchen and continued cooking diner. The meat, potatoes, bread and gravy, Mrs. Higaroshi expected to have finished in an hour or so. Mrs. Higaroshi put the bread into the oven just before the phone rang.
Mrs. Higaroshi washed her hands and picked up the silver, wireless handset. “Hello, Higaroshi shrine.”
“Hi Mrs. Higaroshi, This is Yuka,” came the voice over the handset, “is Kagome around?”
“Yes she is,” Mrs. Higaroshi said, “But she is having a bit of a breakdown right now.”
“She is!?!” came Yuka's frantic voice, “Hold on a minute or two and we'll be right over!”
“It's ok Yuka,” Mrs. Higaroshi said before Yuka hung-up, “Inuyasha is over right now. I think they…”
“He IS!” squealed Yuka, “Mrs. Higaroshi, can we come over for dinner?”
“Sure, you girls and Inuyasha got along pretty well last time so I don't see any problems. Why don't you come over in 45 minutes so I can finish cooking dinner.”
“Ok, see you then. Bye.” Yuka hung up.
Mrs. Higaroshi put the phone back on the hook and continued to cook dinner. This should be good for Kagome. She hasn't gotten to spend time with her friends since her birthday, months ago. She noticed Kagome's sobs had subsided. “I just hope Inuyasha can deal with them,” she said quietly to herself.
Inuyasha carefully carried Kagome up the stairs to her room. The front of his robe (/kimono?) was soaked with Kagome's tears. He sat down on the bed, Kagome still in his lap. “Don't worry, I promise I'll stay.” He hugged her again, wishing she would stop. After a while Kagome stopped crying and fell asleep. He gently picked her up off the bed and pulled back the covers. Inuyasha tucked her in, and left. He had to talk to Mrs. Higaroshi and find out more about how he needed to act and talk.
Inuyasha stopped halfway down the stairs. He touched his robe; it was still soaked from Kagome's tears. He went down stairs to and found his new cloths on the couch, freshly washed.
He grabbed the “advise” tee shirt and pulled off his wet shirt, and the white under shirt with it. He pulled the “advise” shirt over his head. He wormed his way into the shirt that had been bigger in the store. It tore down the middle of the back, starting at the neck. Disgusted, he pulled off the remains of the shirt and dropped it on the floor. He picked up the other shirt and pulled it over his head. He had considerably better luck seeing as it hadn't shrunk. He decided that he might as well see how he looked in it, so he walked up to Kagome's room to check on her and check out how his shirt fit on him.
Kagome was sleeping peacefully leaving Inuyasha to check out the shirt. It looked good on him, a little loose but it still fit him well. Satisfied, Inuyasha sat down on the edge of the bed, his eyes unable to leave the figure of the girl he loved, and loved him back. His eyes halted on her lips, moist and…
The doorbell rang, startling Inuyasha. Down stairs e could hear Mrs. Higaroshi hurry to the door. The door opened and immediately several voices filled the air.
“Hi Mrs. H.” Came three unfamiliar voices, “Kagome isn't sick today is she?”
“Don't be silly.” Came Mrs. Higaroshi's voice, “Kagome is never sick when Inuyasha is around.” Mrs. Higaroshi giggled to herself.
Inuyasha got off Kagome's bed and walked out of the room and down stairs. Three girls were sitting in various chairs around the living room. Inuyasha recognized them as Kagome's friends. He started edging upstairs, where is that damn hat when you need it. He made it back to Kagome's room without being spotted. He looked at Kagome's sleeping form; he was going to have to wake her up for dinner because her friends were here. He sat down on the edge of the bed again, gently shaking her shoulder. Kagome rolled over, mumbling, “Five more minutes,” or some thing along those lines.
“Kagome,” he whispered in her ear, “you friends are here, and you need to go say hi to them for me.”
Kagome sat up quickly, her head colliding with Inuyasha's nose, “What! OW!”
“What was that for?” Inuyasha asked, prickling.
“What was what for?” Kagome asked holding her head. She turned to look at Inuyasha, who was rubbing his nose. “Oh I'm sorry.” Kagome said. “Want me to kiss it better for you.” Kagome grinned.
“You know,” Inuyasha said closing the distance, “You also hit my mouth with your head, why don't you kiss that better?” Inuyasha grinned back mischievously.
“You know what,” Kagome was grinning like a mad man now, “Maybe I will.” Kagome finished closing the distance, pressing her lips against Inuyasha's. Inuyasha greedily accepted the kiss and deepened it considerably, his tongue running the length of Kagome's lips, begging for entrance. Kagome allowed him in and Inuyasha began to play with her tongue with his own. Kagome moaned into the kiss wrapping her arms around Inuyasha and pulling him to her, like a child would a teddy bear.
Down stairs Mrs. Higaroshi was setting the table and entertaining Kagome's friends. “Souta, why don't you go up stairs and get Kagome and Inuyasha.”
“Alright!” said Souta enthusiastically at the thought of waking up his sister. He hurried up stairs and crept up in his sister's room, trying not to alert the wary Inuyasha of his presence, but Inuyasha was to wrapped up in his current situation to notice Souta sneaking up on Kagome and himself.
Souta eased open the door and gawked at the scene before him, Inuyasha and Kagome were all over each other, Inuyasha had his arms wrapped around his sister, his hands low around her waist, and Kagome had her arms wrapped around Inuyasha's neck. Souta couldn't even see daylight between them.
Souta opened the door the rest of the way and crept back to the staircase so he could see the living room where his mom and Kagome's friends were waiting for Kagome and Inuyasha before dinner. Souta filled his lungs and then…
“MOOOOMMMMM! KAGOME AND INUYASHA ARE KISSING!!!”
Souta ran down the stairs 3 at a time to escape a rather pissed off Kagome and an even more pissed Inuyasha.
“MOOOOMMMMM! KAGOME AND INUYASHA ARE KISSING!!!” came Souta's voice from the hall and the squeals of Kagome's friends followed. Inuyasha and Kagome broke apart instantly, Inuyasha trying to figure out what was going on and Kagome attempting to free herself from the bedding that had wrapped itself around her legs.
“Why you little!” Kagome shouted after her brother. Inuyasha figured out what was going on and went after Souta.
Inuyasha tore out of the room, spun left and down the stairs after Souta. Kagome was not far behind and Inuyasha suspected she had murder on her mind. Inuyasha bolted down the stairs Kagome hot on his heels. Deciding it would be better for his health if he let Kagome catch Souta, Inuyasha sidestepped out of Kagome's way.
Kagome launched herself at Souta, missing and colliding with the couch her friends were sitting on. Kagome wheeled around and was about to tackle Souta when a voice made itself heard, “Hi Kagome!” It was Ayumi, her brown curly hair swishing back and forth as she turned to look at Kagome.
Kagome froze and looked past her at Eri and Yuka. Kagome squeaked and turned bright red before she rushed off the couch to hide behind Inuyasha who was still clueless about his exposed ears. He looked at each of the girls in quick succession before he looked over his shoulder at Kagome, who was still bright red. His ears twitched.
“Hi guys.” Came Kagome's small voice from behind Inuyasha.
“So.” Said Yuka in a mock stern voice, “Up and your boyfriend in your bed room with the door closed.”
“Yeah, what of it?” said Kagome defensively.
“So is that why your boyfriend is wearing doggie ears?” came Eri.
“Umm…” Kagome was at a loss.
“Oo, can I touch them?” asked Eri, turning her attention to Inuyasha.
“Uh, yeah I guess so…” said Inuyasha, unsure of what to do.
Inuyasha tilted his head so that Eri could reach them, “Oh they're so soft…” Eri cooed, “I want to wear them, she stopped rubbing them and pulled, hard.
“Ow. Owowowowowowow!” Inuyasha yelled trying to unclamp Eri's hands from his ears.
Inuyasha successfully freed himself from Eri's hands and put a little more distance between himself and Kagome's friends. “Why'd you do that?” he grumped, giving Eri a dark look.
“Well they aren't attached are they?” Eri said defensively, “Besides people don't have dog ears.”
“Well maybe they are attached,” said Inuyasha, “and it just might happen that I'm not…”
“Inuyasha don't…” interrupted Kagome. Inuyasha's ears flicked to face Kagome when she started speaking.
“Look, they moved!” squealed Ayumi.
Yuka had disgusted look on her face, “You mean that they're real?”
“Yeah,” said Inuyasha, his attitude from when Kagome first met him surfacing, “I was born with them.”
“I thought that you were by-racial.” Came Ayumi's voice from by the couch, a confused expression on her face, “Aren't you part American or something?”
“No, I'm not an Amery-thing. I'm half dog-demon and half human.” Inuyasha said growing even angrier.
“You mean you aren't even human!” Yuka yelled, “and here YOU have been hanging out with him Kagome. I am disappointed.” Yuka was treating Inuyasha like he was dirt, like he had been treated his entire childhood.
“Knock it off, Yuka!” screamed Kagome, “If you don't like him, so what. I love him and if you have a problem with that then you can just FUCK OFF, and LEAVE!” Kagome had assumed a defensive position in front of Inuyasha.
“FINE!” yelled Yuka, “I'm leaving!”
Inuyasha looked shocked, no one had ever stood up for his being a half-demon before. Kagome was breathing heavily, her eyes had begun to water and she turned around and buried her face in Inuyasha's chest, he wrapped his arms around her and tried to comfort her, rocking slowly back and forth.
“I'm sorry Inuyasha,” choked Kagome, “I just couldn't stand the thought of anyone treating you like that again.”
Inuyasha picked her up and gently carried her over to the couch where Eri and Ayumi sat, both to shocked to speak.
Kagome clung to Inuyasha in a death grip on the couch, her face hidden in the loose fabric of his shirt.
After a long minute or two Eri broke the silence, “Lets go get something to eat.” Inuyasha and Ayumi nodded their heads and made their way to the kitchen after Eri, Inuyasha pausing at the bathroom to cleanup Kagome's face.
Inuyasha put Kagome down on the counter and began to rummage around in the cabinet for a washcloth. Finding one he turned back to Kagome, who was still sitting on the counter.
“Inuyasha,” Kagome said, “Its ok. I'll get myself cleaned up.”
“You sure?” Inuyasha asked skeptically.
“Yeah,” Kagome slid off the counter and turned on the sink.
“Just one thing,” said Inuyasha, coming up behind her.
“What?” Kagome turned around and her lips ran into Inuyasha's.
“Thanks, Thanks for being there for me just then.” He smiled and left for dinner, leaving a teary eyed Kagome behind.
Inuyasha sat down for dinner, pulling various dishes toward him. He ignored the curious looks that Eri and Ayumi gave him periodically. Kagome came out of the bathroom halfway through dinner; she smelled like tears still but didn't look it. Kagome took a seat next to Inuyasha. Dinner passed largely in silence apart from the asking for and passing of food.
“So,” said Mrs. Higaroshi breaking the silence, “What was that out burst in the living room about.”
Kagome was about to speak and opened her mouth but Eri beat her to the punch, “Yuka was being a racist asshole, Mrs. H.” Eri quivered in rage, her blue hued, shoulder blade length, black hair syncing with her vibrations in its place, “Kagome got pissed and kicked her out.”
“Oh my…” Mrs. Higaroshi said, an expression of worry and sorrow crossing her face.
“Don't bother worrying” said Eri, finishing her food, “she comes from a whole family of racist purists.”
The remainder of dinner passed in silence, everyone working their way through the food with out speaking.
Inuyasha stood up, finished. “Inuyasha, could you put your dishes on the counter next to the sink before you leave,” said Mrs. Higaroshi. He nodded and carried his plate, bowl, and chopsticks over to the sink before he left the room; they heard the front door open and close and concluded that he had gone out side.
Inuyasha walked outside and leapt into the bows of the sacred tree. He didn't want to think; he stayed up the tree. Images and sequences of memories flashed through his head. He was unable to fight them off. They consumed his mind, while Inuyasha drifted off into a tormented abyss of slumber.
The remainder of the evening passed slowly inside the house. Inuyasha had yet to come back inside and Ayumi and Eri needed to get home. Mrs. Higaroshi eventually called an end to the ill-fated social.
“Ayumi, Eri? You want me to drive you two home?” Mrs. Higaroshi said, interrupting a depressed silence between Kagome and her remaining friends.
“Yes please.” Ayumi said in a falsely happy tone.
“I'll come too.” Kagome said, standing up and beginning her search for her shoes.
“It's alright Kagome,” Said Mrs. Higaroshi, “I can handle it, besides you should talk to Inuyasha and see if he is alright.”
“Ok.” Said Kagome in a defeated voice. She gave up on trying to find her shoes and walked out the front door after Inuyasha in stocking feet.
Eri spoke after Kagome went out side, “Poor guy, he is so cute but he has probably been treated like that his whole life.” Ayumi nodded in agreement and followed Mrs. Higaroshi out the back door to where the Mazda was parked, Eri a second or so behind.
Eri and Ayumi piled into the back seat and Mrs. Higaroshi into the front. Mrs. Higaroshi started the car and drove Ayumi and then Eri home. Eri walked in the front door of her house and sighed, she felt sorry for Inuyasha. She walked out of the entry way and into the living room. She greeted her parents and sat down and told them what had happened, about Inuyasha, about Kagome, and about Yuka. She noticed that her father seemed to take a particularly large amount of interest in Inuyasha and Kagome.
Eri went to bed not long after, she pulled off her necklace and instantly she changed. Her hair got longer, her nails became claws, a pair of wolf ears appeared on her head, her canines grew into fangs, and a tail sprouted from underneath her skirt.
Eri watched herself change in the mirror, her true wolf demon self, reflecting back at her in the mirror. She hated that she had to hide who she really was from everyone, her fellow pack members did, Ginta did, Hakakku did, heck even her own parents Koga and Ayame did. It didn't change the fact that she hated it, or that she wanted to tell her friends who she really was. She sighed and put the necklace back on before she got in trouble for not wearing it. Buylo didn't wear his and got caught. Thought Eri, reflecting on what had become of her older brother, He ruined it for the rest of us. God I hate being the youngest.
A/N: Sorry about the really long wait on the up date, don't be mad. If you ever get writer's block then you know where I'm coming from. Forget the review quotas, just remember that I will work harder on my next chapter the more reviews I get, this does not mean that I will update faster, but that I will spend more time on it, possibly resulting in faster updates.
Chill out man…I only made a huge plot twist, hope you can handle it.
