InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Phoenix ❯ From Ashes ( Prologue )
[ X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence. ]
AN: New story time. It'll be told in short chapters, so please
don't complain that it's too short. You've been warned now. The
first chapter is a prologue, and will thus be the longest chapter
you probably read.
A couple other warnings for this timeline - mention of sexual
assault (NOTHING INDEPTH), racial discrimination, sexual scenarios,
depression, and loss of a child. It's a darker fic, but I'll keep
that part on the lighter side meaning there won't be much detailed
writing in sad parts.
Please know I do not own any of the characters from Inuyasha. I do
not make any money doing this.

Kagome's past has pushed her to succeed in her later adult life.
Living in a world that still showed discrimination, she still
refuses to let that incident shape how she sees people. Wanting to
help those around her, she ends up hiring a certain hanyou as her
assistant.

Prologue - From Ashes
“Her body will recover, Mrs. Higurashi but that's not what
I'm worried about,” the young doctor's eyes held such deep
sorrow for the mother standing in front of her. “It's her
mind that concerns me. She's been awake, but just stares off into
the distance. She's okay to go home but I would like to see her
again in a week, then again a month after that.”
“W-why?” Her voice broke as her imagination ran rampant
at what her daughter suffered through.
Kikyo let out a deep sigh, “based on what we
found…” her voice trailed off. Sometimes she really
hated her job and this had to be the number one reason why.
“I will need to run a pregnancy test. From there we can
decide her care path. I do think-”
“She's only eighteen!” Mrs. Higuarshi cried out,
cutting off the young doctor. “She is so bright, this should
have never happened to her.”
“Nobody should ever have to endure such pain,”
Kikyo reiterated. “But therapy may help soothe the mental
anguish she feels.”
“It's not fair,” the elder woman broke down into tears.
Her shoulders slumped slightly while her body shook. Seeing the
mother so distraught made Kikyo imagine her own.
Setting a gentle hand on her shoulder, Kikyo could feel her heart
breaking for their family. “I am so sorry, Mrs. Higurashi. I
know it's not much, but I would be happy to be your daughter's
primary care physician going forward if both of you are okay with
it. While Kagome hasn't vocalized anything, she has let me around
her which is better than how she's reacted to some other
doctors.”
“T-thank you,” she sniffed. “Y-you can call me
Mitsuko. W-what was your name again?”
“Just call me Kikyo,” she replied with a soft smile.
“Thank you for trusting me with your daughter.”
Time passed, yet Kagome remained mute. She felt so removed from the
life that surrounded her. While she had somehow managed to keep it
together enough to finish her schooling, not once did she speak to
those around her. Looking up at the calendar hanging on the wall,
she read that another doctor's appointment had been made for
her.
Before the incident, she was a bright social butterfly. Everyone
was drawn to her unwavering kindness. It didn't matter what the
situation was, even if a person called her names she would flash
them a brilliant smile and apologize. But that night, someone took
advantage of her kind heart. Now she was a shell of a person, and
nobody knew if the girl they had once known would ever return to
them.
Grabbing her coat, she headed outside. Seeing her mom wait by the
car, Kagome gave her a slight nod before letting herself in on the
passenger side. Following the younger Higurashi woman, Mitsuko
slowly entered the driver's side.
“Do you want me in the room with you?” Mitsuko asked
nervously. Seeing her daughter shake her head side to side
indicating `no', she turned her attention forward and started the
car.
“Kagome,” Kikyo looked at the young girl sitting on the
fold out table covered in white protective paper. “Are you
sure you'd like to be by yourself?”
Kagome nodded and waited for Kikyo to continue.
“Your test results are back. I have to inform you that you
are pregnant.”
The past five weeks, Kagome had to be force fed, but today she
willingly came downstairs for breakfast. Seeing her family sitting
quietly together, Kagome took her usual spot.
“Good morning,” she said casually.
Everyone froze and looked at each other. It had been quite some
time since they heard her voice. Looking at his sister, Souta
noticed that her eyes weren't so distant and her skin didn't look
as pale and lifeless.
“Good morning,” her mother replied happily. “It's
nice to have you joining us again.”
“I don't have a choice anymore,” Kagome said as she
reached for a piece of bread. “I have to gather myself.
Eating for two now.”
Kagome's friends hadn't been happy when she seemed to disappear off
of the face of the world but after hearing what happened, four
faces stared at her in disbelief.
“I'm so sorry,” Hojo spoke first. “You are the
kindest person I know, and you never deserved that.”
“A-are you okay now?” Ayumi nervously asked.
“Kind of. Pregnant now though,” her voice was still
somewhat robotic. Just like her family, their bodies froze
mid-action as they looked at their once cheerful friend.
“Are you keeping it?” Yuka was shocked, her face pale
of all color.
“Yes.”
“B-but didn't you say it was a demon who did this to
you?” Eri leaned closer, whispering her question with
distaste.
“Yes,” she repeated automatically.
“The kid will be a half-demon though,” Eri followed up.
“They are looked down upon, Kagome. You know that. You're
just bringing in another burden.”
“All people are created equally,” Kagome forced herself
up on her feet. “All people deserve the same quality of life,
and should not be held back based on their genetics.”
Walking away, she left her `friends' behind, never seeing them
again.
“You are taking good care of yourself,” Kikyo spoke as
she looked over Kagome's chart. “Though you're not gaining
weight as you should. Is everything okay?”
“Just stressed,” Kagome admitted. Her doctor was one of
the few people Kagome actually spoke to and didn't use her list of
automatic greetings and answers. “I've enrolled in college
and took up a part time job to try and save up some
money.”
“The stress isn't good for the baby,” Kikyo frowned
slightly. Tapping her pen against the clipboard, Kikyo looked up at
her favorite patient. “You could risk a
miscarriage.”
A few more weeks passed and Mitsuko waited patiently in the sterile
hallway for her daughter. Hearing the door open slightly, her head
perked up in anticipation.
“Mrs. Higurashi,” the nurse called out.
Standing up, Mitsuko walked towards the door.
“Your daughter is requesting you,” the nurse said with
a sad bow of her head.
Leading the woman back, the nurse opened one of the examination
rooms and motioned for her to step through. Once she entered,
Mitsuko found herself staring at her daughter's broken face and
Kikyo's sad gaze.
“What happened?” Mitsuko's voice wavered with
uncertainty.
“I lost it,” Kagome spoke out before Kikyo could
explain. “I lost the baby.”
Mrs. Higurashi had expected her daughter to spiral back down into
the dark place she once stayed. Upon arriving at home, Kagome
bolted straight for the bathroom. Digging around underneath the
sink, she found the item she sought.
An hour later, Kagome emerged from the bathroom. Coming downstairs,
she cleared her throat bringing her family's attention on her.
Mitsuko gasped at what she saw, or rather didn't see.
“I shaved it,” Kagome shrugged as she rubbed the stubby
hairs on her head. “New start, y'know?”
Her mother ran up to her and embraced Kagome with tears. “You
are a phoenix,” she whispered into her daughter's ear.
“And you will come back even better than before.”
AN: yeah I'm usually making Kikyo not be a nice character, but this
time I did.
Don't worry, I'm still working on my other stories. Just had some
weird inspiration for this one.
