Kagome's past has pushed her to succeed in her later adult life. Living in a world that still showed discrimination, she still refuses to let that incident shape how she sees people. Wanting to help those around her, she ends up hiring a certain hanyou as her assistant.

Chapter Two - You're Hired

"If you don't mind me asking, do you have to deal with that often?" Kagome asked her waiter. It had been a week since that incident, and she honestly loved the food and returned.

Sensing she had no ill intentions, Inuyasha looked at the woman seated by herself. "Keh, yeah. You get used to it. Life of a half-demon and all. Hated by demons and humans, you don't belong in either world."

"I'm sorry," her eyes softened. "You shouldn't have to deal with such an awful setting."

"Gotta pay bills. It's not like there's an easy fix," he mumbled. Grabbing his note pad, he readied his pen. "So, what's it gonna be?"

"Can I get the soup? It's a little chilly out there," Kagome motioned through the window she sat next to.

"Yeah," he replied as he scribbled down her order. "Anything else?"

"Hm, an assistant if you have one of those lying around," she joked.

"It's just me today, so no."

"Why not? You'd be treated with kindness and not be subject to racist comments. I bet I pay better than this place," she smiled up at him.

"You'd willingly hire a half-demon?" Inuyasha raised an eyebrow at her.

"Why not? I did before."

"Oh, I get it," he shoved the notepad into his apron pocket. "You take in charity cases. That was how you knew the half demon you were here with last time, huh?"

"No," she replied, her smile unwavering. "I did it because the rest of the world looks down on people like her, and now she's been able to move onto something better. We still keep in touch, she's become a really close friend."

She visited once a week like clockwork, and it made Inuyasha confused. He was angry with her, yet excited to see his favorite patron. She always tipped well and showed him kindness, and he slightly returned it. His job was customer service, nothing more than that.

"So how's your day?" she asked as she took a seat.

"Good. By myself again," he mumbled. Seeing her stare out the window, Inuyasha could see the bags underneath her eyes. "What's up with you? Didn't get enough sleep?"

"You could say that," her eyes moved to his. She didn't bother to hide the pain in her chest that shone through her eyes. "Bad memories. I still don't have an assistant, so work has been hectic as well."

"Whatcha do?" he was curious. She had kind of offered him a job before.

"Uh, I guess they would refer to me as a CEO or whatever," she waved it off casually. Seeing his confusion to her attitude towards what would usually have been a bragging point, she decided to elaborate. "I went to school, made a startup. It worked out, I'm pretty proud of what I've accomplished."

"So what's your company do?"

"Hm, it's kind of weird explaining. We just do online articles, and people have been responding well. Some serious topics, others write about silly ways to pass time. I just approved a new branch to do online videos. It's the future and all."

After Kagome had left, Inuyasha walked over to the table she had once inhabited to clear her space. Picking up the piece of paper on the black tray, he noticed a business card tucked under her receipt.

If you do want to apply - here's my number.

Inuyasha hastily shoved the small paper card in his pocket.

"Tell me about yourself," she asked casually. Inuyasha noted her large desk and the bulletin boards behind her. Random snippets and pictures held into place by push pins.

"Well, I work at the diner," he started nervously. "I saw your card, and here I am."

"Not why you're here, I already know that," she smiled. "Let's start with just basic personal information. You live in the area?"

"Yeah," he nodded along.

"Family?"

"One brother, don't talk to him much. Parents passed away years ago. Currently have a small fox demon under my care."

"How did that happen?"

"That doesn't sound like basic personal information," he pointed out skeptically.

"Right. My apologies. Thank you for correcting me," Kagome leaned back in her chair.

Inuyasha scolded himself, it this was any other job interview he would be on his best behavior. Being a half demon, he was already put at the bottom of the list. But right now, he was being his usual smart ass self.

"His parents died too," he explained ignoring the apology. "He was an orphan, but I saw him and decided I could at least try to provide for him."

"How old?"

"Seven."

"Hm, that's very honorable for you. So, qualifications?"

"I'm good at bringing you coffee," he joked slightly.

"True," she chuckled. Pushing a paper forward, she looked at him in the eye. "This was all more of a formality. Job's yours if you agree. On the paper, you'll find the purposed rate of pay and job duties."

Inuyasha eagerly grabbed the thick paper stock. His eyes looked back up her in shock. "This much just to be your assistant?"

"Well, I do expect you to work whenever I need you, but I am reasonable. I won't call you at three in the morning unless it's a dire situation. I'll leave you alone on most weekends though I'll let you know ahead of time if I'm working weekends, which means you'll be here too. Some days can be long and I'd have you running around doing errands."

"There's something else, isn't there?"

"Yeah. You're the head of the other assistants, so if they bring something for me to approve - you review it first. If it fits the guidelines, then you'll pass it to me."

"And that's it?" Inuyasha raised an eyebrow.

"That's it."

"Then I accept," he gave her a genuine smile.

"Welcome to the company," she stood up and reached her arm out to shake his hand.
