Show No Pain or Weakness

Grimacing, Sango strained to turn her head to the side. She began to cough and spit, but breathing was difficult with the weight on her back. On top of her, Kagura struggled to free her arm. There was a rustling, and then her arm shot free, fan in hand. A quick flick of her wrist, and trunks and branches started to fly off her with a creak and moan. As the load lifted, Sango took in a deep, ragged breath. She felt Kagura slide off her back.

The demon slayer struggled to her feet. She had not got very far, when a hand appeared before her face. Getting to one knee, she grabbed it and Kagura pulled her up. But she was not able to straighten up right away, and gripped her knees, gasping.

“Are you okay?” Kagura said.

Sango nodded her head. She would not tell Kagura that the pain she felt as breathed meant she had probably broken a few ribs. Wiping the dirt and blood from her face, she tried to stand.

“Why did you do that?” Sango asked.

Kagura shrugged, holding her closed fan casually in front of her.

“You humans are so fragile,” Kagura said. “I survived your hanyou friends wind scar, I knew I could survive the earthquake, while you on the other hand…”

The wind sorceress gave the demon slayer an appraising look.  Undeterred, Sango stood up straight, beckoning with her sword.

“Shall we go?” Sango said.

Nodding, Kagura led on, Sango quickly catching up to her. They took brief rests, called by Kagura, to eat and drink a little.

When they got to the cave, Sango gasped. The entrance was blocked by debris from the quake.

“Kohaku, Kohaku!” Sango called in a panic.

A small face peeked out from behind the rubble.
