Chapter 1: Wounds Re-opened
Inuyasha, Kagome, and the rest of the gang were all hanging out by the bone-eating well. Everyone was talking and laughing, except Inuyasha, who sat off by himself, grumbling about everyone “being too happy.” Truth to be told, he longed to join them, but was afraid of the consequences. Inuyasha was unsure of himself, never knowing quite what to say. This was due to his upbringing, during which every word that came out of his mouth was shunned, just because he was a Hanyou.
Inuyasha looked towards Kagome, the secret love of his life. Inuyasha was, however, afraid to tell her, because Inuyasha did not want to be rejected. In addition, he knew that once they were mated, there would be no turning back. This thought slightly scared Inuyasha, and he shivered unconsciously. This caused the others to blink. Then to inquire.
“Inuyasha, why are you shivering? It's perfectly warm outside.”
“Nothing, wench. Now leave me alone.”
With that, Inuyasha got up and prepared to leave. However, something made him stop. What Inuyasha didn't know, was that some thing would change both his and Kagome's lives forever. Something that had already changed Kagome's life in the past, and was coming to change it again. Now it was coming for everybody in the gang.
A bright blue light emitted from the bottom of the well. Miroku and Sango, who were sitting on the edge of said well, leapt up in fright. “Doesn't that only happen when Kagome or Inuyasha are going through?” Miroku said nervously. “I think so…” Sango replied softly. As the light faded, everyone gathered around to see what it was.
Inuyasha hid Kagome behind him and drew the Tessaiga. If that something down there was dangerous, it would have to go through him first to get to Kagome. Meanwhile, Kagome scooped up Shippo and cradled him against her chest, protecting him from any harm that may come. In a small, frightened voice Shippo asked; “What is it down there?” “I don't know” Kagome whispered back.
The blue light at the bottom of the Bone-Eating Well vanished. In its place was a person. Inuyasha sniffed the air. Female, Kagome's age, not mensing at the moment, healthy, and foreign. Hmmm… Meanwhile, Kagome peeked around Inuyasha's shoulder. Recognizing the person at the bottom well, Kagome gave a frightened gasp. “Kura-kun?! But you're dead! You were in the war… weren't you killed?”
The youth at the bottom of the well smiled. “Well, I lived. Kami knows how, but somehow I survived. I fell out of contact with you because I became able to go into the past, here in Japan, I mean. I traveled here to surprise you with a visit and saw you disappear into the old well. So I waited a day, and followed you.”
Kagome blinked. Kagome gaped, doing a perfect imitation of a goldfish. Shippo spoke up. “Well, why are you still down there? If you and Kagome are friends, then you're my friend too. Inuyasha will help you up.” “I what, brat?” Inuyasha growled. Grabbing the young fox demon, he began whapping Shippo's head. In return, Shippo reached up and bit Inuyasha's hand. Inuyasha released Shippo, and he ran to Kagome and jumped back into her arms.
“Kagome, Inuyasha's hurting me!” He whined. “I know. Just ignore him. Inuyasha, go help her out of the well.” “Keh!” Was Inuyasha's reply, but he jumped down the well. Grabbing the girl, he noticed that he rather liked her scent. Sandalwood and Sunshine. Jumping back up to the surface, he set her on the ground.
Kagome cautiously approached her friend. Suddenly, Miroku and Sango blocked her way. “No Kagome!” “It might be a trap!” They cried. With a sigh, Inuyasha spoke. “It's ok, she's human. I can smell it. She means no harm.” Kagome looked to Inuyasha with relief. “Thanks, Inuyasha.” She said softly.
Again Kagome approached her friend. “Kura-kun? Is it really you?” She asked nervously. Kura-kun laughed. “Of course it's me, silly! Do you think I would come all this way for nothing? Feel the warmth in my hands! I am very much alive!” Tentatively, Kagome touched Kura's outstretched hand. “It's warm. And yes, knowing you, you would travel all this way for no particular reason.” The two girls laughed, along with Shippo, who had again jumped out of Kagome's arms.
“True, true! You always were the sensible one.” Kura countered. She paused. Then, with a sudden battle cry; (“Squee!”) She launched herself at Kagome, glomping her to the ground. “Kura!” Kagome cried in delight. Smiling, Kagome hugged her friend back. “I'm so glad you're okay.” She whispered, tears in her eyes. “Me too.” Came the reply.
Noticing the ring on Kagome's finger, Kura gave an evil grin. “So you're still wearing my promise ring, Eh?”
