The Prophecy
Chapter 1
“Why in the seven hells did you turn him down, Kagome?!” an angered voice yelled as six girls walked down the crowded sidewalk on their way home from school.
“Oh, quit your whining, Eri,” Sango admonished, rolling her eyes at her overreacting friend. “It's Kagome's choice and besides, he's so boring.”
“I agree with Sango,” Rin spoke crinkling her nose. “He's too…ordinary. Only a special guy is worth our special Kagome.”
“But Hojo's so hot!” Ayumi squeaked. Yuka agreed with her by joining her squealing.
“Alright, alright, so I turned down Hojo, number one bachelor in school. I'm just looking for the right guy, and he wasn't it,” Kagome said, trying to appease both sides of the argument as they neared an intersection. “See you guys later,” Kagome said to Eri, Ayumi and Yuka. They chorused a `see ya' and continued on in a different direction. Kagome let out a sigh of relief.
“They need to rearrange their priorities,” Sango commented as soon as they were far enough away as to not hear.
“They're just simple minded,” Kagome said smiling as they continued through a park towards their respective houses, “don't judge them harshly because of it.” The forest was dense, trees on either side of their path, nearly blocking out the mid afternoon sun. Kagome looked around and spotted a well through a break in the trees, situated in a small clearing.
“You look at that well whenever we pass it. Are you ever going to quench your curiosity?” Rin asked, spotting Kagome's glance.
“Yeah,” Kagome whispered; her mind not entirely on what her friend had just asked her. She stopped on the path, causing Sango and Rin to pull up short as well. Kagome started through the brush towards the well. “I'm just curious as to why it's here. I can't explain it, but for some reason I feel drawn to it much more today than any other day.” Sango and Rin followed after her, both silently feeling the same invisible pull.
They reached the well and crowded around it, all putting their hands on the ledge, leaning over the edge to look down into its seemingly bottomless pit. A blue light appeared from the bottom, growing brighter and brighter as it drew closer and closer to the top of the well. It burst forward, encompassing the three unsuspecting girls. The light surrounded them, blinding them, and giving them the strangest sensation of free falling.
When the blue light faded, the girls blinked and looked around at each other. “What the hell just happened?” Kagome asked, cursing in her surprised and disoriented state. She looked around at their surroundings and gasped. They were no longer in the forest that led to their homes, but in a sort of…fortress…thing…though still standing around the well.
“Um…I have no idea,” Rin murmured, also taking in their new surroundings.
“'Ey! Whut're ya three doin'?” a loud voice demanded.
The three jumped in surprise and whirled around to face the voice. A tall man with brown hair, an unshaven face and wide shoulders dressed in medieval wear, breeches, a leather jerkin, and a sword strapped to his waist, prowled towards them. His ears were…'Pointed?' Kagome noted with curiosity. He also had strange markings on his face, black stripes above his beard and a crescent moon resting on its side on his forehead. She noted that they looked more natural rather than like a tattoo.
“Whut're ya three doin' `ere?” he asked again, eyeing their strange clothes; most women he knew of didn't wear pants unless they were in the army. And their clothes were form fitting, hugging their curves. `'Re they pros'itu'es er somethin'?'
“Um, we don't really know…” Rin answered, fidgeting nervously.
“How'id yeh get `ere?” he questioned them, suspicious of their odd dress yet educated speech.
“Again, we don't know,” Sango answered this time, her voice betraying her frustration.
He looked at them and then seemed to come to a decision. “Come wit' me.” The girls looked between themselves before following after him, figuring they might be able to get some answers if they did.
The man, or whatever he was, led them around the fort to a door. He knocked on it and called out, “Sir, Ah thin' Ah've got some'in tha' yeh migh' be wan'in' tuh see.” When there was a muffled reply the man pushed the door open. Inside was a sitting room with a fireplace opposite the door with a couch and two armchairs in front of it, and doors to the right and left.
A tall man came through the door to the right and Kagome noticed that beyond the door was an office with a desk and bookshelves situated against the back wall and paper strewn all about. The man, Kagome now observed, was around six foot four, give or take an inch or two and easily towered over her five foot six inches, and had long white hair that shown with the flickering candle light. He wore a bright red tunic that was opened at the collar, and loose black breeches. His frame was lean and pleasing to Kagome's eyes and she couldn't help flushing a bit. She noticed something twitch on top of his head, and when she looked, she saw the cutest white dog ears she'd ever seen. Her hands twitched with an unexplainable urge to pet them.
“What the hell is this Captain? I've already told you that I'm uninterested in partaking of your game,” he spoke with a swoon worthy deep and husky voice, his speech reflecting his better education, a frown marring his handsome face.
The captain grinned and said, “Ah'm naw `ere `bout tha' this time, suhr. Ah was makin' mah roun's when Ah saw this blue glow o'er by th' well. So, Ah made mah way over and foun' these three.”
The man's eyebrows rose in surprise. “Really now?” he asked amusement and curiosity in his voice as he made his way towards the three girls. His gaze swept over all three of them before settling on Kagome. “What are you doing here, Bitch?” he asked with a smirk, a single eyebrow cocked.
`BITCH?!' Kagome thought with furiously. “I have a name you know, its Kagome. Now, say it with me, Kah-goh-meh!” she spoke slowly, sounding out each of the syllables as she glared at him. The captain's eyes widened before his grin grew, not many people would challenge the man in front of them.
The man frowned and he thought, 'She's either really smart or unbelievable stupid…probably the first.' “Well, Kah-goh-meh,” he said, punctuating each syllable, “how did you happen to get here around all of our defenses?”
“We don't know how we got here. We were hoping that someone around here might have been able to help us with figuring that out,” she spoke, crossing her arms over her chest and glaring up at the man.
“Where are you from?” he asked, schooling his features as inexplicable anger formed in his gut at the thought of someone else helping this fiery maiden.
“You wouldn't believe us,” Kagome told him.
“Try me,” he challenged, raising both eyebrows and crossing his own arms over his chest.
“Well then, I'd guess that we're from the other side of that well, maybe even a completely different world, because we're obviously not in Tokyo anymore.”
His eyes widened slightly. He glanced at the captain and they exchanged a silent conversation that none of the girls could translate. “I'll be leaving for the capital tomorrow morning, Captain. Find these girls a room for the night and anything else that they might require. You three,” he addressed the girls, “will be joining me on my journey.”
“Yes'ir, Prince Inuyasha,” the captain saluted. He led the girls out of the building and down the way to another door, which he proceeded to knock on.
“Come in!” yelled a distinctly feminine voice from the other side of the door. The captain pushed the door open to reveal a lady with long red hair pulled up into two pigtails and brilliant green eyes lounging back on a couch in front of a four poster bed with a book. She had pointed ears and a bushy red tail the same color as her hair. `What the hell?' Kagome thought. `These people are obviously not human. What have we gotten ourselves into?'
"La'y Ayame," the captain addressed the woman. "Can yeh bunk these three in 'ere for th' nigh'? I dun think they'd appreciate bein' bunked wit' th' soldiers."
Ayame looked them over and smiled. "Of course I can!" she said cheerfully, ushering them in and shutting the door behind them, the captain leaving on his way back to his post. "So what's the story with you girls?"
"We wound up here by the well from another world," Sango said bluntly as she sat down in an armchair.
"Really?" Ayame asked surprised. "Well that would explain it."
"Explain what?" Rin asked. "And why is no one unbelievably surprised by this? I mean, it's not exactly normal for three girls to just pop out of nowhere!"
"Inuyasha will explain it to you tomorrow. I think I might tag along on your trip," Ayame said thoughtfully, going about her room, grabbing blankets and pallets.
"So, everything will be explained to us tomorrow?" Kagome asked.
"Yes," Ayame answered.
"I wonder how we'll get home," Rin commented. "I bet our families are worried."
"I don't know, but we don't even know if this world's time runs parallel to ours, so don't worry about something that you can't change," Sango told her. They stayed up and chatted with Ayame for a while before falling asleep, each secretly worried about what was to come.
