Chapter One: Forewarnings.

"In a line of silver and blue;
The crow will come to you;
And when they call;
This world shall fall;
Only you;
Can save us all.”

"What a greedy liar," Kagome scoffed, stepping out of the ominous black fortune teller's tent, and desperately wishing for her money back. "She acted like I was some sort of chosen one or something.”

To her right, an arm draped over her slender shoulders. "I wouldn't be so quick to judge, Kagome. Madame Hi Na has never been wrong with her foretellings; & you know the legends of our lineage,” her brother was saying. Stupid, stupid brother who lately seemed to be right about everything.

Kagome’s eyebrows crinkled, but she forced a laugh. "Of course I know the legends about the star crossed lovers: Kyoko and Jacques. Fated to be together, but cursed apart..."

It was a sad legend, really. When Kagome was a little girl and her grandfather would tell it to her, she would always cry and go running to her mother, who would chastise the poor old man until he promised to never tell it again. And the whole incident would repeat itself the next night…

It was centuries old, actually. Jacques Atray had been a great warrior in the 1800s; known by many as the greatest. He was a spy as well, and in 1837, when he was 17, he was sent to act as a servant in Queen Kiyasha's quarters; where he met the lovely Kyoko Mitsuru. They fell deeply in love, but in 1839, she betrayed him, telling his secret to the Prince. Jacques was beheaded, and Kyoko eventually killed herself in guilt and agony.

Everyone knew who Jacques was; and every detail about his life. He was a sweet, svelte, handsome, womanizer. But no one had ever found any record of Kyoko Mitsuru...until now.

Kagome Higurashi blew a shiny translucent bubble into the night air, watching it float up and land amongst the stars. They twinkled down at her, mocking her almost, showing off their high place in the sky, while she was stuck on cold, wet ground.

She couldn't stop thinking of Hi Na's words. Her brother was right about her accuracy, but Kagome couldn't help but be perplexed. "What blue & silver line? A bird making the world fall apart? It just doesn’t make sense. Why do people always have to speak in riddles about the big important stuff?”, she groaned.

A bird chirped to her right, and she jumped, snapping her head to look at it. A sparrow. Interesting.

"Awfully chilly for summer, isn't it?"

Kagome nodded and smiled softly at her mother's delicate face. Her eyes were a dull brown, even though they used to be so vibrant. At least, until her father died four months ago from a motorcycle accident.

"I was planning on visiting Miss Sayo this morning, if that's all right," Kagome said. Miss Sayo was her mentor, maybe even her psychiatrist. But all her mother knew was that Miss Sayo was a crazy lady a couple houses down with fourteen cats.

"That woman's mental health is detrimental to your own," her mother warned. "But I don't mind. You're sixteen now, plenty old enough to make decisions on your own."

"Thank you, Mother," Kagome said before she stood and turned inside.

Miss Sayo was exceptionally beautiful. She didn't say much, but what she did say was worth it's weight in gold. She was very diminutive, and had long flowing hair, which was oddly colored a pale blue, matching her icy eyes. Rumor had it that she was a nymph, but Kagome didn't believe that. They didn't exist, after all.

"Hello, Miss Sayo! How are you today?"

Miss Sayo just raised her eyebrows and smiled sweetly. "What is it you came for, Kagome?", she asked, her voice clear and soft; almost melodic.

Kagome cleared her throat. "I visited a fortuneteller yesterday..."

"And she told you about the prophecy?," Miss Sayo guessed, while fixing them both a glass of iced tea.

Her ability to foretell things like that was astonishing. Frightening, even. “Yeah. How’d you know?”

She just smiled again. "Jacques Atray...and Kyoko Mitsuru. Jacques is in my lineage. Way, way back."

"You mean Kyoko? Jacques is my greatest ancestor."

"No, child, Kyoko is your greatest ancestor. I shall show you."

Kagome followed Miss Sayo outside into the garden; where they stopped at a pond's edge. "This pond... underneath the soil, there is a great maze. This is where Jacques and Kyoko hid and made love for the very first time. Kyoko got pregnant, and they had a son, named Ash. When the prince found out about this treachery, he demanded Kyoko tell him everything there was to know about Jacques, or risk the baby's life. Kyoko betrayed Jacques in order to save Ash's life. But Jacques never knew, so he went to the grave hating Kyoko. Kyoko grew Ash up in this home, but never told him anything about Jacques. Anyways, Jacque's father, Astoire, was furious with Kyoko, and had her and Ash executed. Jacque's sister, Belladonna, is an ancestor of mine."

"How do you know all this?," Kagome marveled.

Miss Sayo smiled. "Call it childish exploring. There are pictures on the walls of the maze down there, telling the entire story. It's sad, isn't it?"

Kagome nodded. "Awful. But how does that prove Kyoko is my ancestor?"

"Kyoko's entire future lineage is down there. Up to your great great grandchildren."

"But that's impossible," Kagome snapped, narrowing her auburn eyes at the woman next to her.

Miss Sayo just smiled. "Come one day, & take a look for yourself."

"Can I right now?"

Miss Sayo just shook her head. "The time isn't right. You’ll know.”

And she smiled.
