CHAPTER 3
Sesshomaru was sitting on his futon, looking out the window when he heard someone outside of his door. Without turning to look at the door or waiting for the person to knock, he called for them to enter.
"Hey Sesshy-kun!"
"Grrr- How many times have I told you to not call me that half-breed!"
"Alright already, don't get your fundoshi in a bunch!"
"InuYasha I have no time for your tiresome antics right now!"
"Why? Do you have a date?"
"None of that would concern you."
"Really - Are you meeting a secret lover?"
"This Sesshomaru does not have a lover - be it public or secret."
"Touchy, touchy! I just wanted to know if you caught a good glimpse of that wet nurse from earlier? Kami how I'd like to bite her on the neck!"
"This Sesshomaru does not care for such infatuations."
Ignoring his half brother Sesshomaru moved about his room, getting his personal items arranged (what can I say he's a neat freak). Once his brother took the hint, the young lord was left to ponder in silence. In his mind pictures of the young woman with the children kept playing over and over. If he had to make an educated guess, he'd be pretty sure the children were Miroku's - but something about the woman irked him. If she were a mere wet nurse, why would she be sparring with the eldest child?
Surely he'd have a sensei for training. They could have been merely playing - something to keep the children occupied while their father greeted the demon calvary. But he wasn't entirly convinced of that. The woman most definitly could not be their mother, she barely looked older than the eldest child, and her fighting... Eventhough Sesshomaru and InuYasha watched them for a few moments, Sesshomaru's keen senses were able to pick up some strange facts. He continued to wonder about the woman, she fought very gracefully and though she was sparring against a child, he could tell she was very skilled with a sword. 'The boy was quite skilled as well' he mused, 'no doubt he had learned from his father.' Miroku was skilled, very skilled.
Sesshomaru was always excited to spar with him, Miroku gave him a better work out then many of the pups who trained with him at the palace. His thoughts drifted back to the woman, she most definitly out skilled the boy. He could tell she was holding back, most likely trying not to injure the boy physically or hurt his pride either. But her effortless fighting style had him very intigued. He could hear the punding of the boy's heart and the gasping for breath from his lungs. The woman however was a different story, her heartbeat was steady as was her breathing. She could've been siiting under a sakura tree reading a book, she did not eminate one ounce of exhaustion. He could hear the boy's footsteps on the ground.
They were heavey, stomping at times, as he switched his feet tochange his style - but again the woman was different. It was almost as if she floated above the ground, he could hear no sound from her. She moved quickly and gracefully it was almost as if she were dancing not fighting. Sesshomaru tried to shake the images from his head. 'Why am I so concerned over this human woman' he thought to himself. But before he could fret over it anymore, his thoughts were inerupted by a knock at the door.
"Enter."
"Lord Sesshomaru?"
"Care to meet me at the sacred tree?"
"Nani?"
(Sesshomaru was not paying attention to the person who was at his doorway, but after the last statement he looked up.)
"I said, care to meet me at the sacred tree?"
"I heard you puny human!"
"Ahh - so you do remember me!"
"Of course how could I forget a weakling such as yourself!"
"Weakling? Hah! Lets go and I'll show you weakling!"
"Miroku you're as full of it now as you were back then."
"And you, Lor Sesshomaru are still as arrogant as ever."
"Hai - that may be... but I am my father's son."
"Yes - as am I - dinner is being served. We will catch up then, yes?"
"Hai Miroku-san."
"Good day Sesshomaru-sama."
After Miroku closed the doors - Sesshomaru couldn't help but laugh out loud. "So old friend, we have both grown up but in many ways we are still only twelve years old." The young lord readied himself for dinner and smiled again when he heard the familiar ring of the dinner bell. Sesshomaru joined his father, half brother, and the rest of the caravan as they made their way to the main dining hall.
It lookes the same as it did sixteen years ago. Only this time it had triple the amount of of tables and cushions set up. All the way at the other end of the room, there was a grand table where Miroku was standing and waiting. He then noticed the sea of servents that presented themselves. The women all bowed and spoke in unisome - "Welcome Lord InuTaisho and honored warriors."
Then in no time the servents separated showing the warriors to their seats. Three servent women escorted Lord InuTaisho, Lord Sesshomaru, InuYasha, Jaken and two head warriors to the table where Miroku was waiting. Again he bowed in respect. He then grabbed a nearby goblet and raised it to toast his guests. "In honor of Lord InuTaisho and recent victory over the continent - The Higurashi household would like to invite the Great Lord, his sons and warriors to enjoy a feast fit for seven kings."
Once he was done speaking, Miroku clapped his hands twice and even more servents came piling into the dining hall carrying trays upon trays of delicious foods. They placed the platters at their respective tables, bowed and then left. The remaining servents (the ones that had seated everyone) began to serve the guests at theirs tables. Many servents fed the warriors as they, both the women and the men, flirted shamelessly with one another.
Lord InuTaisho was in deep conversation with his head warriors, no doubt planning their strategy for the next time they face Ryukotsusei. InuYasha was too busy flirting with the servents that served him. He stared at them the same way a starving wolf stared at a rabbit. Jaken seemed totally disconnected and lost in whatever it was that he was eating. Sesshomaru saw this as an opportunity to speak with Miroku without being reguarded as informal.
"So Miroku, I take it your father has passed on?"
"Yes, and mother as well."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"Yes, well they were both ill for some time."
"I noticed four childeren as we entered your grounds, are they yours?"
"Yes, Kohaku is the oldest, Souta and Hojo are twins and the little one is Kanna."
"My congratulations, I would like to meet their mother. Why is she not dining with us?"
"She too has passed on."
"Again my sincerest apologies."
"Yes, well its been hard, I lost her when Kanna was born."
Sesshomaru fell silent, he looked down at his plate. His own mother had died the same way. He couldn't even begin to imagine what that kind of loss could do to a man. Miroku started to notice the uneasiness in Sesshomaru, so he picked the conversation back up.
"So you saw Kohaku sparring? Good isn't he?"
"Yes, it seems his father's taught him well."
"Hah, I wish I could take credit for that, but I didn't actually teach him. My parents passed not too long after his birth - so I've been busy running the retreat and overseeing the temple, shrine and household. He only just starting training two summers ago."
"Really? Helooked quite skilled to only have just begun training!"
"Well he does have the best trainer in all of Japan - and the continent to be exact."
"Interesting, I'd like to meet him. Perhaps he would be willing to spar with me?"
"I'm sure she wouldn't mind sparring with you, although she may need a bit of persuasion!"
"Wait did you just say she?"
"Hai!"
"So the woman he was sparring with is his sensei, not a wet nurse!"
"She is most definitely not a wet nurse!"
"Tell me, where did you find her?"
"I've known her all her life."
"Really?"
"You've met her before, but you probably don't recognize her."
"I think I would have remembered meeting her!"
"Well, old friend, it was a long time ago."
Sesshomaru sat in deep thought for a few moments. How could he have met a such a woman and not remember. After he is Lord Sesshomaru, Heir to the Western Lands. He does not forget anything or anyone of importance, and this woman would most definitly be up there on his list of important people to remember - even if she were just a mere ningen. It was irking him to no end that he could not place a name with her face. He was still mulling over this revelation when his brother broke is train of thought.
"Hey Miroku!"
"Yes, InuYasha what could I do for you?"
"Whatever happened to your annoying baby cousin - what's her name?"
Sesshomaru's eyes almost popped out of his head. He looked at Miroku. His friend seemed to know exactly what he was thinking as a smile came across his face and he shook his head yes. Sesshomaru finally found his voice as realization hit him dead on.
"Kagome!?"
