CHAPTER 4
Sesshomaru sat up in his bed, looking out the window at the darkened sky. 'Dawn hasn't even arrived yet' he mused whlie rising and dressing himself. Once he was finished he stepped outside into the early morning. Stars were still shining overhead, the air was crisp and cool. Sesshomaru decided to use his momentary solitude to his advantage, and explore the grounds and the buildings. He was very familiar with everything but for some reason he felt the need to become re acquainted. He walked into the bath house. The water smelt fresh and clean, and appeared to be very warm.
The atmosphere was very inviting but he was not ready for a bath just yet. After exiting the bath house he wandered around some more. He came up to the sacred tree and paused remembering the many times he and Miroku had fought beside it. His mind also drifted to the little girl that would always be sleepnig on a blanket nearby - that is until the half-twit would wake her. Sesshomaru placed a hand on the tree and felt its energy. "You and I go way back, don't we?" he told the tree. After letting out a heavey sigh, he proceeded to wander around some more. He had been there for almost a week now, Lord InuTaisho had informed them that they'd be there until summer arrived. Sesshomaru frowned remembering his father's instructions.
Summer was fast approaching, only a couple of weks away - and he did not want to leave this place - not yet. He continued his exploration of the area until he came up to the main house. He stared at the old familiar building for a few moments. He suddenly felt like a young pup again, and without prevail he slipped into the house un-noticed. He could sense eveyone sleeping - after all it was still a couple of hours till day break. He could hear the labored breathing coming from behind the doors. Walking down the corridor, he stopped to listen and sniff each door, determined to idenify each occupant.
The first room he came across had three occupants sleeping within it. Two were most definitely female, the third a male. With a very strong odor of arousal seeping through the door, it was very safe to assume that the room belonged to Miroku. Sesshomau smirked, remembering that even when they were young Miroku had a way with the ladies. It was almost a comfort to know he had not changed that much. Continuing down the hall he stopped at the next room. The room was occupied by a boy who was not quite a man yet. It was obvious that it belonged to Kohaku. The next room housed two younger boys, definitely the twins. The were only two rooms left. The last one seemed unoccupied for the moment, but smelled strongly of wild flowers.
The other room had two occupants, but the room itself smelled fresh and innocent like a baby, definitely Kanna's room. Sesshomaru listened intently to the sounds coming from behind the door. He could hear a soft sweet voice singing a lullabye, and the creaking of a rocking chair. He could also smell a faint aroma of wild flowers, the same from the other room. The scent was very familier to him but he could not place it. Tuning his senses into the room he noticed the creaking had stopped and her the soft scuffeling of feet on the floor. He could also tell by Kanna's breathing and heartbeat that she was asleep. Listening again he realized the footsteps were headed for the door. Within the blink of an eye Sesshomaru was outside of the building.
He was curious to see who was in that room, he was waiting for the right moment to go back into the house when the front door slid open. He watched as a very beautifu young women stepped out into the early morning ai. She was dressed in a tradtional kimono with different shades of blues, it accented her stormy blue eyes, and the midnight blue highlights that shone throughout her raven hair. Standing behind a dragon statue he continued to watch the girl as she descended the steps and made her way across the courtyard. A small smile spred across Sesshomaru's face when he realized it was the same woman from yesterday. "So Kagome, you've grown up after all..."
Sesshomaru waited behind the statue until Kagome was a safe distance away. He did not want to startle her, nor did he want to introduce himself under these conditions. He was never one to explain his actions, but somehow telling her that his curiosity got the best of him, and he was somewhat stalking her family, did not seem right. After she was a good distance away he decided to follow her. He caught her scent easily, the scent of wild flowers, and tracked her to a small path that was down behind the temple.
'Funny - I've never noticed that before' he thought to himself. He stayed far back as he watched Kagome continue down the path, to a small cluster of trees and other vegetation. Sesshomaru waited until the girl was in the trees before he followed. Very quietly he stalked down the path and with prowess and grace he leaped onto one of the tree branches. He noticed that the trees acted as some type of fence, and behind them was a cemetery. He watched as the girl bowed and prayed at just about every boseki, he was even more intrigued when the girl kneeled before the last boseki and stayed ther for nearly an hour.
Before the girl got up and left she placed a bouquet of flowers at each marker. He held his breath as she exited the small graveyard. He could smell the tears that had fallen from her eyes. As soon as she was completely down the path, sesshomaru leaped from his perch and landed gracefully in the cemetery. He scanned the large stones, that marked the identities of ancestors that have passed on. The markers in the back represented family members that have been gone for generations, where the ones in the front appeared to be more recent. He read them out loud, mentally noting who they were.
The first one read Mushin and Kaede - Miroku's parents. The next one read Sango, he wasn't sure who that was, but when he read the epitaph he realized it was Miroku's wife. The last boseki puzzled him, it was small and plain, it held no epitaph, only the name Rin. He had no knowledge of this Rin person - perhaps it was a familt member he had never met. He continued to stand in silence, trying to figure who it could be. But his concentration was broke by the ringing of bells in he near distance. His ears perked up, breakfast was being announced.
Disclaimer: ...hhmmm? I wonder what they're serving for brekfast? Anyway I still don't own anything...
