CHAPTER 5

It was now late afternoon and again Sesshomaru was wandering the Higurashi grounds lost in his thoughts. He had missed Miroku at both breakfast and lunch. 'He must be busy' he told himself, 'I wonder if he'll be at dinner'. He also wondered why Kagome never ate any of her meals with them. He really wanted to know if she'd spar with him. He wandered around aimlessly some more until he came upon the stables. He stood at the large doors for a few moments, deciding wether or not he should enter - 'Hn Mushin always had magnificant horses, perhaps Miroku does as well'. Making up his mind, he pushed open the doors and quickly covered his nose with his sleeve.

He did not need the stench of animal or manure assaulting his sensitive senses. After a moment of adjusting he moved the sleeve from his face and was almost shocked at the smell - or in this case lack of smell - he never remembered entering any barn or stable that had such a clean scent. 'Perhaps he does not have any animals in here?' he asked himself, but he knew that was not the case. Even though the stables smelt clean he could detect the smell of horses and fresh hay and water, clearly indicating that animals were definitly housed within the building.

He walked from stall to stall noticing that only four seemed to have housed the horses, but at the moment none were there. He walked further down noticing a large door to the side that was wide open. He peered outside the down and noticed four magnificant parading around in a circle - much like a carosel - and on top of the creatures sat Miroku's children and Kagome. Each boy had his own horse while Kanna straddled her horse with Kagome.

Sesshomaru stood there for quite some time as he watched the now grown-up Kagome give Miroku's children riding lessons. She had unwavering patience - going back and forth showing the twins the same simple steps over and over again. Sesshomaru was so enthralled with the equestrian show that he did not even notice he wasn't the only one in the audience. He was jolted ffrom his reverie as his half-idiot slapped him on the back.

"Grrrr."

"Whoa take it easy, I only came to see the sights."

"And what sights might that be, little hanyou?"

"Oh I think you know - Hey what did I say about you calling me little hanyou!"

"Fine then, big idiot."

"Hey!!"

"Yes there is plenty of that inside, now keep your voice down you'll scare them."

"Oh? Are you afraid to let the fair maiden see you? Are you only interested in admiring her from afar?"

"I meant the horses you half-twit, if you startle them they will bolt. That is not a good idea with children on their backs, baka."

"Well maybe not the children - but I'd definitely like to that fair one ride me the way she is riding that horse!"

"You are most disgusting little brother, besides that will never happen."

"Really? And why's that?"

"You are way out of her league."

Sesshomaru turned on his heel and began to walk out of the stable, he could tell his half brother was angry at his words but he didn't care. However what he didn't notice was the wicked smile that was spread wide across InuYasha's face, as he exites the stables and continued across the the courtyard. As he walked through the grounds he spied three servant girls whispering, giggling and pointing towards the stables.

He rolled his eyes 'How any female could find that hanyou attractive is beyond me' he snickered to himself. He stopped before the group of young women, collective gasps brought them from their fantasies as they bowes and spoke in unisom, "Good afternoon Lord Sesshomaru". He regarded them with cold eyes, servants were so beneath him especially ningen servants. Sesshomaru kept his face emotionless - as he usually did when in public or addressing those not worth his time - "Where is the monk Miroku?" he asked but it came out more as a cool demand.

The three ningens were staring at him with eyes as larges as saucers, one girl finally mustered the courage to answer him. "I i in t t the main house - i i in h his study" she stammered out. They stood there visible shaking as he bore his cold golden eyes at them. One of the girls was about to ask him if he knew where to go when he suddenly spun away from them and stalked off towards the main house.

Sesshomaru could not believe the stupidity that Miroku's servants posessed, 'If I did not know where the study is located we I would probably still be there staring at them, or perhaps my sword would have accidentally slipped' he mused to himself.

Within moments sesshomaru found himself standing outside the doors to the study. He could tell that Miroku was definitely in there shuffling papers and scrolls back and forth. Gathering his thoughts together he knocked on the door, ready to get the answers to the many questions he possessed.

"Enter... Oh Sesshomaru-sama it's you".

"I have not seen you at the meals for this day thus far. Is everything alright?"

"I apologize for that, but with the amount of guests that are here, there has been much to do."

"I understand, I was wondering if you will joining us for the evening meal?"

"Hai. As a matter of fact i"ve made sure that I'll be free for the rest of the evening."

"Ah - very good, perhaps you'd like to use the katanas by the Goshinboku?"

"Ha ha ha - Really Sesshomar? Katanas? Ha ha ha"

"If you would like to live to reach old age I suggest you stop laughing at me. I have not sparred in a while - and if my memory is correct - you were always one to give me a good workout."

"Ah - Sesshomaru much has changed over sixteen years. With my duties here I've not had time to practice in a long time. I'm afraid you'd have a better workout with Kohaku than with me."

"Really? So your son out skills you?"

"Well maybe not yet but he certainly has more stamina!"

"Hn. Monk you sound like an old man."

"*sigh* In many ways I am - and then again in many ways I'm not *wink*"

"Hn."

"Say Sesshomaru have you asked Kagome to spar with you?"

"Kagome? No I have not seen her."

"I see."

"Tell me Miroku, why is your cousin much like a ghost?"

"Excuse me?"

"What I mean to say is why is she not social? I've been here for a week and the only times I've seen her is when she's with the children. Are you punishing her?"

"Punishing her? I am absolutely not punishing her!"

"Then perhaps you will enlighten me as to why she does not dine with us? Why has she not been formally introduced? I know she most likely does not remeber myself or my father or the half-breed - but wouldn't it be the proper thing to do? She is after all a Higurashi and the lady of your house."

"I had no idea proprieties were so imprtant to you my lord."

"Do not mock me, formalities are important, but I am only curious as to why your cousin hardly seen."

"Well as I said before alot has happened in sixteen years. But right now is not the time for those discussions. Please excuse me Sesshomaru-sama I have to see to the dinner preparations. I will see you then good friend."

"please excuse my intrusion on your cousin's life, I just felt it a little strange - thats all."

"I know - but with Kagome It's, it's hard.... Um anyway - I will see if I can get her to come to dinner - maybe then you can ask her to train you."

"Grrrr... I do not need training from a ningen let alone an onna. I merely need a good workout."

"Rrriiiigghhhttt!"

"MONK!"

"Ha ha ha , do not fret my lord, I'll see you at dinner."

"Hn."
