CHAPTER 6
It had been twenty minutes since the dinner bell rang, the grand dining hall was bustling with noise. Sesshomaru was beginning to worry his friend wouldn't make it to this meal either. He looked around the grand room and watched as all the warriors fell into their usual routines of being fed and doted on by the the female srevants. He turned his attention back to his table, his father was in the same conversation, he's always in, with his top warriors. Jaken was yammering on and on about being surrounded by humans for so long and the half-twit was up to his usual antics, flirting with the serving wenches. Sesshomaru had just about given up on waiting for Miroku to join them, when he noticed the monk out of the corner of his eye.
He was walking towards their table with someone following behind him. Sesshomaru noticed the normal clatter had quieted down as all eyes in the dining hall focused on the person following the monk. Miroku approached the table, "Good evening Lord InuTaisho" he said as he bowed. It was then that Sesshomaru realized who was behind the monk. "Good evening Lords Sesshomaru and InuYasha" continued Miroku as he said his formal hellos. Then the monk stepped to the right and motioned for the young woman, who had been behind him, to come foward. Reluctantly the girl came foward. Sesshomaru looked up at her, and his breath caught in his throat.
She was the most beautiful ningen woman he had ever seen. Her skin was almost as pale as snow, her lips like burgundy rose buds. Her silver blue eyes danced under the candle light and her ebony hair seemed to flow on forever. If he wasn't Sesshomaru, son of InuTaisho the Great Dog General, Lord of the Western Lands(note the long pompous title), he would've thought his heart skipped a beat. He studied the girl's face. It was soft yet frozen, she seemed to have put a block up - the same way Sesshomaru did. There was no emotion on her face what so ever, but her eyes they seemed to scream - scream out 'Please get me out of here!'
Sesshomaru was almost certain she was uncomfortable, but neither her face nor her aura betrayed that emotion. As he studied the girl he barely heard the words spoken around him. "My Lord InuTaisho I would like to present my cousin Lady Kagome - she shall be dining with us this evening". Kagome bowed respectfully to the Great Demon Lord, "Good evening your lordship" she said. Sesshomaru had to fight of the urge to close his eyes when she spoke, her voice sent a strange, but pleasurable, tingling sensation straight down his spine. InuTaisho acknowledged the beautiful woman with a smile and then turned back to his warriors.
Sesshomaru could notice the voices around him getting louder as the rest of the room continued with their meals. He glanced up at Miroku who was continuing with formalities. "Lords Sesshomaru and InuYasha may I present my cousin Lady Kagome." Again the girl bowed, "Good evening Young Lords" her voice sang. Sesshomaru gestured for both to be seated. He watched the girl as she seemed to be staring at nothing, as if trying to ignore the situation she was in. So many thoughts and memories came rushing through his head, he wanted to tell her just how beautiful he thought she was - but of course he couldn't do that.
He was Lord Sesshomaru, heir to the western lands, he needed to be formal, cold, aloof and above all emotionless - at least in public. Showing emotion in public (with the exception of anger and rage when you're fighting) was frowned apon for someone of his station, so he continued to hold the same emotionless mask as Kagome. After several tension filled silent minutes, Sesshomaru thought he was going to lose his mind. He was about to break the ice and ask her about fighting and possibly sparring with him, but unfortunately the half-a-brain had to open his mouth and insert his feet - very far in.
"So Kagome" InuYasha began, Sesshomaru inwardly cringed at his brother's atrocious eating manners. He still held his chopsticks up as he spoke and food could be detected each time he opened his mouth. He watched as the girl turned her head - no doubt being polite - in giving the hanyou her undivided attention. Sesshomaru thought he saw her frown.
"So Kagome - you've grown since the last time I saw you."
"Hai Lord InuYasha, it has been a long time."
"Ah yes too long, my sweet."
"Perhaps."
"And to think that an annoying snivelling bay would grow up to be such an enticing beauty."
"Compliments are not needed Lord InuYasha."
Sesshomaru could not beleive the stupid hanyou, not only was he openly flirting with his Kagome - err I mean Kagome - but he was staring at her the same way a starving peddler stares at a piece of bread. He was doing all he could to restrain himself, he wanted to jump right over the table and rip the half-ass's throat right out. Thankfully Miroku noticed the uneasiness and set the conversation in another direction.
"Kagome" the monk began "Lord Sesshomaru is quite interested in your fighting styles. He would like to know if you would train him - err ahem - I mean spar with him?"
Miroku couldn't help but let a big smile sread across his face. Sesshomaru wanted to kick him under the table, but the urge disappeared as soon as silver blue eyes locked with his sun kissed eyes. She seemed almost suspicious, eventhough the expression on her face never changed. Sesshomaru didn't know if she was ever going to answer him, so he decided to act like it was beneath him to spar with her.
"I don't need to practice with a woman let alone training with one" he stated colder than he initially intended. He looked at nothing in particular trying to keep his composure, while inside his head he was screaming 'yea that was real smooth!'
Miroku shot him a questioning look, the monk was about to say something but was cut off by a sweet yet stern voice.
"Is fighting a woman beneath you?" she asked, her face still showing no sigh of emotion.
"No it's not that" Sesshomaru replied.
"Are you afraid of being beaten by a woman?" she asked, again with no emotion.
Miroku and InuYasha started choking in their sake, Sesshomaru however feigned indifference and replied coldly, "A woman could never beat me, especailly a ningen woman."
Miroku was starting to get a bit nervous so he interrupted again with words of wisdom. "Ah since neither of you seem to have a problem with fighting woman I believe a sparring session should be scheduled..." His voice trailed off as his attention turned to a woman servant who approached the table.
She bowed respectfully and bent low speaking only to Miroku and Kagome. With all the background noise he couldn't make out what they were saying, but judging from the expression on the servant's face and the way she kept flashing glances at InuYasha, he knew it couldn't be good. The servant then bowed again and walked away. He watched as both Miroku and Kagome rose, but Kagome's hand motioned for her cousin to sit back down. He thought he heard her mumble something about staying with friends.
Kagome bowed respectfully and spoke "Please excuse me good gentlemen, but an urgent matter has arose that requires my immediate attention." He watched as his father nodded in her direction, his stupid half-brother gave his best 'sexy face' and winked at her.
Miroku gave her a hopeful glance. Kagome was about to turn around when Sesshomaru remembered something important. "Excuse me Lady Kagome, but what of the sparring session?" She turned around and looked right into his eyes, "Tomorrow. At dawn. Goshinboku." she replied and walked away. The rest of his meal was eaten in silence.
