CHAPTER 10
It was mid afternoon and Sesshomaru was once again wandering around lost in his thoughts. Another week had flown by, and his father had announced they'd be leaving in two days to start heading back to the western palace. Sesshomaru wanted to scream at his father like a little kid - throw a tantrum, but he, Lord Sesshomaru - did not do such things.
He let out a deep sigh as he sat under the Goshinboku. He could still smell the sweat that he and Kagome emanated from their sparring session earlier that morning. He was growing quite fond of their morning interludes - if that's what you want to call them. Each morning was very much the same, but also different.
They'd be at each other's throats for hours, each one growing stronger and stronger - neither relenting one bit. Kagome would try different moves, but Sesshomaru would catch on quick. In a way she was teaching him without him ever noticing. Since both were proud warriors, neither wanting to admit defeat or fatigue, they had both decided to spar until the lunch bell (if neither had come out the victor by then). Each session ended the same - both agreeing on a rematch for the next morning.
After the second morning, Sesshomaru began to notice a change in Kagome. He noticed that when they were alone, she would let her emotionless mask fall. He noted to himself daily how beautiful she looked whether she was smiling or just plain pissed. Another change that pleased him was the fact that Kagome joined them for dinner on her own accord. Miroku had thanked him on more than one occasion - for what he wasn't entirely sure - but the monk insisted that the young demon lord's presence alone made Kagome seem more like the young child they both knew.
Unfortunately her dining time was always cut short, when a servant came in. He could always tell the news wasn't good, but he never could catch what they were talking about. It was always Kagome that would leave to deal with the problem never Miroku, and Sesshomaru was begining to get curious as to why. After the meal was finished, he let out a deep sigh and rose from the table. 'Perhaps I'll speak with the monk, but right now a good ride will do me good', he thought to himself. Without a word to anyone at the table, he headed off towards the stables.
Once at the stables, he place a sleeved arm up to his nose as he pushed open the doors. He didn't want to be overwhelmed by all the animal smells. Once inside he slowly removed his arm and allowed his nose to adjust, as he walked passed the stalls. All the horses were there except for one. 'Too bad' he thought to himself, 'I would've joined who ever it was that went riding'. Sesshomaru chose a fine stallion and began to lead the horse over to the side door, where the saddles and reins were kept. That's when he noticed Kagome, she was brushing down a stallion and preparing to saddle up.
"Ahem."
Kagome looked up from her task, and let a small smile spread across her face.
"Nice evening for a ride, ne?"
"Hai, it is."
Kagome quickly prepared both horses and lead the way to the corral. Both riders mounted their steeds and trotted off. She opened the gate and allowed Sesshomaru and herself to steer their horses out onto the grounds. They trotted along - out past a small group of trees, until they reached a clearing. Sesshomaru looked at Kagome - but her face said it all. With an arched eyebrow and an evil smile, Kagome kicked off and went tearing through the clearing like a bat out of hell. Sesshomaru chuckled to himself for a moment before he tore off after her.
They spent nearly two hours racing back and forth in the clearing. Only when Kagome noticed the horses' fatigue did they head back. As soon as they arrived back, Sesshomaru quickly dismounted and offered a helping hand to Kagome. She smiled as she accepted his help, and then proceeded to remove the saddles and bridles from both horses before putting them back into their stalls. Sesshomaru wanted to help but felt awkward, so he continued to watch her in silence. She grabbed the horses some buckets of water, fed them some oats, and pitched some hay.
When Kagome was done, she was quite tired and wanted to head off to the bath house. She could tell the handsome demon lord wanted to say something but was uneasy. She didn't know what it was about him - but she couldn't help but feel safe around him. She felt so protected by him that her stone wall, that took her nearly eight years to construct, came crumbling down. Kagome eyed him while he stood in silence - obviously lost in his own thoughts. She couldn't help but appraise his looks. He was definitely around Miroku's age, and very handsome - god like really - his silver/white hair seemed to shine as bright as a hunter's moon.
Her mind began to wonder what it would be like to be in his arms - have his beautiful lips pressed against hers. Kagome felt her face grow hot and quickly shook her head to dispell the evil but delicious thoughts from her head. They stood in silence for a few more moments when suddenly a servant girl came rushing in. Kagome eyed the girl she knew well and inwardly prayed that she wasn't there to inform Kagome of another injured servant. The girl was flustered and appeared to be a bit scared, apparently she was there to address the intimidating demon lord. The girl was shaking in her sandals. Kagome would've laughed, but that would be rude.
"Ex - excuse me my lord, b - but Miroku-sama requests your presence in his study. He... he says it's um... quite urgent."
Sesshomaru eyed the servant, 'damn it' he thought to himself but gave a curt nod to the girl. The girl bowed and raced out of the stables. When she was out of sight , he turned his attention to Kagome - who seemed to be in deep thought.
"Do you know why your cousin wishes to speak with this Sesshomaru?"
"Hai, but it is something I am not liberty to speak about, forgive me my lord."
Sesshomaru eyed her carefully trying to figure out what it was that was so important, but her face betrayed nothing of the thoughts running through her head.
"Have a good evening my lord, I'll see you in the morning?"
"Same time, same place."
With a small bow, Kagome quickly left the stables. He stared at her retreating form until she disappeared into the bath house. He inwardly groaned, with the mental pictures that started popping into his head. Bringing himself back to reality, Sesshomaru headed off to the monk awaiting him in the study.
A/N: Ok here is the next chapter as promised. I know it sucked... I didn't like it much either but no matter how I tried I just couldn't get it to cooperate. Oh well, next chapter will shed some light on why Kags disappears every evening at dinner. And at least we've established she's attracted to lord fluffykins...
