What Would Become of Me
There it was again! That feeling! The feeling that she was being watched, being watched very closely. She had had enough. Spinning on her heal, Kagome stared accusingly into the trees. "Who's there? You've been watching me for about ten minutes strait! What do you want!" And all she got in reply was the shifting of the leaves in the fall air.
They were toying with her and she knew it, but it was unerving to have eyes burn holes into your back when you have done nothing to concern them, or at least nothing besides walking alone within a forest that is known to hold demons of every shape and gender. Ranging from cold hearted killers to those very rare, very kind demon healers.
The sun that had once been beating down upon her with no remorse was now hidden from view, but up ahead in the clearing the lay just within her grasp, promised the shining, golden rays.
She looked around again and sighed. She had been in the Forest of Shadowed Secrets before, and evey time she had heard, but never met, the un-normal demon who didn't even seem to have the want to kill her.
And as much as she hated going into the forest that housed the demons, she had no choice. Kagome's Mother was just to busy with work and looking after her family with no help from her now dead husband. Her Grandpa was too old and he had to watch over the Sacred shrine. Her brother, Sota, was of course to younge, so that left only Kagome. And being the only one left, she had to go retrieve water from the abandoned, yet beautiful well.
A branch cracking and falling to the ground woke her from her thoughts and she squealed in sudden fright that caused her to take off in a flat out sprint towards the well that lay in heart of the forest as well as the sunny clearing.
She finally dropped to her knees next to the well and panted like a sprinter who had run ten miles nonstop. She wipped the thin coat of sweat from her make-up-less face. There was no sign of the creature that had caused her heart to lurch like it did so she took a depp breath and told herself to get what she had came here for.
Leaning over the lip of the well she stared into the face of her reflection. Her mid-back lengthed hair curtained around her face and her shining Midnight Blue eyes looked back. She was attractive but she chose not to think of herself that way. She was in no way conceited. She cared for other's and always seemed to find a way to put someone else's needs in front of her own, and because of her great kindness, she was looked up to and was well respected, but she sometimes wondered if the respect was more for the fact that she was the new keeper of the Holy Grounds of the Shrine or of her current ability to have a husband.
Like she would want to marry any of the villagers anyway. Most of them cared only about weath and fame. There were some people out there who could watch an elderly women fall and not even check to see if she was all right or if she needed any help. It was sickening!
She reached out and touched the water that always seemed to be unnaturally high in the well despite the lack of rain.
Sighing she looked around for the bucket that was always left here. Of course she noramally brought her own, but she had forgotten and rembered after she was already half way through the forest. She would just have to bring it back later then.
She spotted it, but as she was leaving the well, a flash of light in the depths of the water caught her attention and brought her back.
Much to her confusion, there was a small glowing ball of light just beneath the surface. Hesitantly, she reached out with delicate hands to touch it, but as her fingers made contact, the world flipped upside down and blinded her with the brightest light.
She pulled away purley out of shock, but something was wrong. Everything was just so... so..dark.
Looking around Kagome found that she was not only on the ground, but she was looking up at the sky. The were no words that could describe the beautiful sight that had been laid before her. No artistic drawings could have copied this masterpiece. No poet could have formed this into a flow of words.
She had never seen so many stars before! Her eyes widened and her breath was caught short, how beautiful, though the word beautiful did it no justice, it would be the closest thing she could get to describing it.
The moon was a silver sliver, but still caught her attention. The small area around the moon was black, but that was the only place that the stars had yet to take over. The message was clear, the moon still domonated the sky.
She was quickly brought back to attention though when she heard quick yet quiet footsteps, and they were headed her way. So she did the only thing she could think of doing; she ran. How foolish she could be at times. Everyone knew how found demons were about a running prey. If she wasn't dinner before, she was deffinatly dinner now!
She resisted the urge to scream, fall, curl into a ball, and cry. She didn't want to die! She had yet to even say goodbye! Sending up a silent prayer, she forced her legs to go harder.
She had been running without rest, and it was starting to get to her. She was slowing and was having difficulty breathing. But I can't give up now! Home is just ahead!
There it was, she could just barely make out the line of trees that just came to an abrupt stop.
She burst though only to trip over a tree root and went flying. She hit the ground hard and felt the air momentarily leave her body. Oh Kami-Sama, someone please help me!
But nothing ever happened. Kagome cracked open an eye she hadn't even realized she had closed while she had awaited her death that apparently wasn't going to come for now. Key word: For Now.
She looked behind her to find only the looking of the forest, becking her to come back. She shook her head, You're not going to get me today!
She pulled herself off the ground, patted the dust off of her outfit, and mentally gave herself a good shake. She glanced forward only to have her breath get caught in her throught. Her house, her family, the shrine, it was all gone!
