InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Search Of Hope ❯ Call of The Dead ( Chapter 18 )

Kikyou gave a cursory glance at the second pot she had broken. Heaving another pot, she walked towards the hill - again. Maybe it's because of her unwillingness that caused her to be so clumsy. But that will be the only way. Other than that, the couple will never be able to defeat him. Grimacing as she scratched her hand against the sharp, broken edges of the pot, Kikyou took out an ofuda from her pocket and mumbled a silent prayer. Tears flowing down unconsciously, she placed it on the pot to seal it shut so that only Kagome can open it. Sitting down on the soft ground and crossing her legs as she placed her hands together, Kikyou closed her tear-stained eyes and started praying. Her voice was shaking as she mumbled the prayers - the one and only prayer that will cost her everything.

"So . . . it wasn't because she was trying to be affectionate?" Kagome asked.

"Of course! Keh!" Inuyasha had explained to Kagome everything that Kikyou said.

"Oh . . . now everything makes sense." Kagome said thoughtfully.

"What makes sense?"

"Now we just have to figure out how to protect the Goshinboku." Kagome continued.

"How?"

Kagome rolled her eyes. "If I knew, I wouldn't be sitting here, baka."

"Keh!"

Kagome yawned. "Whatever. Goodnight, Inuyasha."

Inuyasha was about to argue. He looked down and smiled slightly at Kagome's curled up form on her side of the bed. "Goodnight, Kagome."

Kikyou struggled to keep awake as she dragged the pot towards the Higurashi Shrine. She flinched as she look at her hand, which was cut up pretty badly. Kikyou let out a laugh, one devoid of any real humour. Sure, her hands are cut alright. But there's no blood. Sighing as she remembered the words of a priest, she continued to walk towards the shrine. The words of the priest had stabbed her deep in her heart. `The people in these world can carve out new moments. What can a dead one do?` Shaking her head, she looked up and saw Kagome's room in darkness. Deciding that it would be better if she couldn't see Inuyasha, Kikyou left the pot under Goshinboku. Leaving a note for the both of them, she sat there. After a while, she stopped panting. Lifting up a knife, she dugged it deep inside where her heart should be. Her soul flew out and headed straight towards Kagome's window. Smiling, she closed her eyes and her body faded to dust.

Inuyasha woke up with a sense of lost deep inside him. Shaking it off with a wave of hand, Inuyasha look down at the beautiful young woman beside him. Stroking Kagome's face gently, he smiled and stood up. Stretching himself while yawning, Inuyasha walked towards the door and went downstairs to wash his face.

Breathing in the fresh air, Inuyasha looked around him - the place that he belonged to. Recalling what Kagome had said quite some time ago, he gave a happy sigh and started towards the Goshinboku for his regular morning run. Usually he would have brought Kagome along with him, but after yesterday, she must be exhausted. So he had left her in bed. `Inuyasha, your home . . . has been here along. With me. You're no longer alone. Haven't you realise that already? ' Replaying the scene again and again, a feeling of utter contentment washed over him. His face in a brilliant glow; not only from the work of the morning sun but of his happiness as well, Inuyasha picked up speed.

Kagome turned over and hit the pillow. Frowning, she opened on eye. Something was missing. Looking around, she couldn't understand why but she was feeling energetic yet a sense of lost was there. An empty hole in her heart. She wasn't used to this. Looking down at the body imprint beside her, she realised it.

Inuyasha.

But something else was there. It was as if a missing piece has been brought into her heart but another one was taken out. But she didn't have time to think about that already. Why did Inuyasha went for their morning run without her? He had promised that he would bring her along everytime, didn't he? Kagome crossed her legs and rested her elbows on her knees. Burying her face within her hands, Kagome sighed. She hadn't realised she would wake up feeling so terrible. Shaking her head, Kagome stood up and walked towards the cot to look at her children. Surprisingly, they had been sleeping all night. The day she had climbed through the well . . . Kagome didn't realise that she would come back with a mate and two hanyou children. That's what she had requested for all along, isn't it? A happy family was what she had always wanted. From young, she had always dreamt of having a happy family where they'll laugh and joke all day . . . Kagome strot towards the door and went downstairs for breakfast.

"Inuyasha?" Kagome called out uncertainly. She had found Inuyasha by the Goshinboku, dazed. He had this faraway look on his face with a piece of paper in his hands. Inuyasha was sitting down, slouching - one action Kagome had never seen him done before, and there was a pot beside him. A clay pot, to be exact. None of that made any sense. After calling out a dozen times, Kagome sighed and gave up. She walked towards him. He narrowed his eyes but didn't make any movement. Plucking out the note from his hand, Kagome read:

Dear Inuyasha and Kagome,

When you get this letter, I'm probably dead. This is
the only thing I can do to help all of you. I had lived in
hopes of seeing you again because I killed you
with my own hands 300 years ago. I couldn't
live with the guilt. But you told me live on and that
was what I did. Because of you, I have perserved
on. When I saw you and Kagome the other day
alive and well, you wouldn't be able to imagine
my happiness and shock. I thought that this
is the only thing I can do for you so that you can
defeat the villian, Naraku. Kagome's current powers
might be able to hurt him but not strong enough
to kill him. The best method is to combine
the powers of mine and hers. But he will use us
as a bait and Inuyasha will be caught in
between again. I can't let that happen. So I
decided to sacrifice everything. Remember, Kagome,
I've returned your soul to you. That also means
I'm inside you. I help to defeat Naraku. Do not
give up finding the clues to defeat him. This clay pot
contains all my powers. Kagome, you know what to do.
Use them wisely.

Always with you, Kikyou.

Inuyasha buried his face in his hands. He let out a low growl of total frustration as his hands shook. He missed the sad espression on Kagome's face. Walking towards him silently, Kagome could only pat him on his back. Inuyasha pulled her into his arms and sobbed. Kagome cried with him, partly because she was upset that Kikyou had left; and the other part . . . Inuyasha had only cried once. That once, he didn't let his tears fall. But now, Kagome could feel the salty tears seeping through the soft piece of cotton frabric. Inuyasha lifted his head and faced the cold air surrounding him. Even now . . . for once, the Goshinboku was speechless. Kagome looked at him and offered a comforting smile. Inuyasha forced himself to smile back but he must've failed because Kagome grimaced. Suddenly, Kagome's smile faded as she fell but not before Inuyasha caught her. "Kagome!" He yelled at her, as if doing that would wake her up. Shaking her furiously, he shook his head and headed towards the house.

Kagome moaned as she slowly opened her eyes. Taking a few seconds to clear her vision, she shook her head and groan when her head felt like it had be stabbed a million times. It feels like someone has jumbled up her brain's contents and left it like that. Slowly, she tried opening her eyes again. But it just hurts even more. Sighing as she gave in and let her eyes remain closed, she decided to let her ears take charge instead.

"Is she alright?" Mrs. Higurashi's worried voice asked. Even without looking, Kagome could tell that she was frowning.

"She's just shocked. Just let her lie there for a few days and don't try to over-excite her. It might only cause more problems." The doctor's voice was deep and mature and Kagome suspect he must be some old guy.

"Thank you, doctor."

Kagome could hear the doctor's brush of clothing and the door opening and closing. She braced herself for the worse as she opened her eyes again. Her head didn't hurt that much anymore. Clearing her vision as she look up at Mrs. Higurashi's concerned face and then at Inuyasha sitting down on the floor, staring out of the window, she sighed. "Kagome? Are you alright?" Mrs. Higurashi asked.

Kagome didn't reply.

Looking at Kagome and then at Inuyasha, she gave another sigh and strolled out of the room, determinded to give her daughter and her mate some privacy. For one thing, the tension in the room was choking her already.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kagome fiddled with her hands as she stared at the bright ceiling. Inuyasha refused to move closer but he didn't shift away from her either. Kagome wasn't comfortable with the distance. Then she noticed one thing - the clay pot was right beside him. He didn't make a move to take it or anything. He just sat there with his arms and legs folded. Slowly, Kagome turned her head towards Inuyasha's direction to find him doing the same. His eyes were filled with sorrow and pain within those amber glowing eyes.

"Why?" Inuyasha asked. Kagome looked up at him in question. She moved herself to a sitting position without taking her eyes off him. "Why did she leave without saying goodbye?"

A silence followed. "You still love her, don't you?" Kagome finally asked.

Inuyasha growled as he strode towards the pot. He banged his hands on it only to be burned by the barrier. Kagome flinched but didn't say anything. Kikyou had placed a barrier on the pot so that only her can open it. Inuyasha took the pot and grabbed Kagome's hand. He placed it on the pot as both of them stare at each other. The intensity of his glowing eyes were one of those things Kagome couldn't ignore about him. It was as if he could read her mind - those eyes could speak things he will never say. A bright and warm glow filled the room. Kagome could feel the welcoming aura of the powers in the pot. The contents seep out and stretched itself. Inuyasha stared at the last thing that proved Kikyou's existence. He couldn't help it. A tear slipped and made it's way down his cheek. Suddenly, invisible fingers wiped away his tear. The tender fingers caressed his face and stroked his hair. A whisper was heard. `Goodbye, Inuyasha.'

`Goodbye, Kikyou.' He closed his eyes and gave in as the hands slipped away and . . . disappeared.

The warmth left the room as fast as it had came. It was back to it's cold self. Inuyasha looked down and glanced at Kagome. She was smiling through her tears. "D-d-di-did you hear her? She bade goodbye."

"Yes, I did." Inuyasha replied. Then he sighed as he bent down. "Kagome . . . There's something that you should know. Kikyou is just a memory - a past to me now. You're the one that matters. I was upset because I didn't get to say goodbye."

"Well . . . now you did." Kagome replied quietly.

"Yes, so I guess I should be happy now. You should too." Inuyasha smiled. For her and for him.

Kagome smiled then yawned.

"Alright. Now you should res-"

"Inuyasha?" Kagome asked, "Will you lie down with me?"

Inuyasha considered that for a moment. Then he sighed and slipped into the bed with her. Within moments, they were asleep.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"No."

"Please?"

"No."

"Come on, just a few minutes?"

"Fuck NO!" Inuyasha growled.

"Now now . . . you love me don't you?"

"Don't use that against me. It won't work." Inuyasha snorted and look away.

"Really? I guess I'll go . . . with the children then. Alone."

"I'll see if you dare."

"Ok. Ino! Suz!" Kagome called and giggled with Inuyasha grabbed her arm.

"Fine. I'll go with you-" he flinched as Kagome squealed,"but we can't bring the children."

As if on cue, Inokuma came out and giggled, his mouth with drool. He was biting on the comforter. "Where's Suzuki?" Kagome asked.

"S-s-sleep!" Inokuma shouted. Then he landed on his butt. Inuyasha rolled his eyes and spared Kagome a glower before carrying Inokuma back to the nursery.

Kagome smiled at his retreating form. She had wanted to visit Kouga, much to Inuyasha's disgust. She had been begging him and he had stood his ground until she used the children to threaten him. Kagome ignored the prick of her consicence as she waited for Inuyasha to come out. She almost laughed at Inuyasha's face. He was pouting, much to Kagome's amusement. He reminded Kagome of a child. After the Kikyou incident, Inuyasha had been so kind to her it was scary. It seems like it was his way of an apology. Inuyasha grabbed her hands and pulled her on his back before heading straight towards Kouga's house.

Smiling contendly, Kagome snuggled up to him. This is enough - for now.
