Chapter Seventeen:

Tomo quickly sidestepped as another pure arrow flew towards him. He sighed and touched his forehead. "Try, my lady," he said, desparately clinging to what patience he had left.

Kagome opened her eyes and paled as she saw the arrow sink into the tree. "Sorry," she whispered.

It had been a month since the companions had come to the village. All the companions had been taking much needed lessons from the samurai and the monks of the village. The villagers were eager to please and eager to teach.

It was Tomo who had offered to give Kagome lessons on controlling her powers. Now, he wished he hadn't. It was obvious to the demon that the priestess did not really know what she was doing.

"Should I try again?" she asked, putting her hands together as if in prayer.

"No!" Tomo shouted, a little more forcefully than he meant. He sighed, "Let's try something a little less... destructive."

Kagome nodded, though she was a little upset. He had been trying to teach her how to conjure things. It was one of the many powers she had. No longer did she have to worry about running out of arrows, for her mind could easily provide her with one. The problem was, she hadn't gotten the hang of shooting it without a bow, something the youkai had been trying to teach her.

Tomo sat cross legged on the ground. "Sit with me, my lady," he offered, indicating the ground in front of him.

She took the spot and stared at him eagerly, wondering what he was planning on trying next. He suppressed the urge to laugh at the look on her face. Instead, he straightened his voice and closed his eyes. "In order to learn the powers you have, you must first learn discipline," he told her, speaking softly.

She nodded.

"My lady?" he asked, not seeing the nod.

She clapped a hand over her mouth and quickly apologized. "So, what should I do?"

"Close your eyes," he whispered, not bothering to open his to check on her. "Don't say a word, just feel. Feel the power of the world around you. Power exists everywhere, in everyone. The trees, the grass, the dirt. It exists in the people, the animals. Everything, every creature has power. It's an energy that keeps us going."

"But, how do I..."

"Sh!" he interrupted. "Don't talk. Just listen. Just feel. That is all. Don't move. Don't open your eyes. It's all here. Every scent. Every sound. Every taste."

Kagome tried to concentrate. She could hear the sounds of practicing in the background. Inuyasha shouting out insults while children laughed and played. She could feel the wind blowing in her hair. She could smell the animals, steel, and leather of the village. She then heard a buzzing. It was a normal buzz. The buzz of a bee, flying high in the air. The buzz of...

"Naraku's poisonous insects!" Kagome shouted suddenly, jumping into a stand.

Tomo was already standing, looking in the northern sky, the direction the insects were coming from. "Villagers, take heed!" he shouted, grabbing Kagome and making his way deeper into the village. "My brother is paying us a visit!"

The villagers immediately scrambled into action. Inuyasha took Kagome from Tomo and brought her into Tomo's hut. "Are you ok?" he asked her.

She nodded. "I'm fine."

"Good," he said, "Stay here."

He turned and walked out.

"As if!" she shouted, following him out of the hut.

"Kagome!" Sango called, coming to stand next to the priestess. "Where are you going?"

"Where do you think I'm going?" the priestess retorted. "I'm not going to sit in some hut while you battle with Naraku."

"It's not Naraku," Miroku said, appearing suddenly on the other side of the priestess.

Kagome tilted her head and looked at the monk curiously. She then looked in the direction where his attention was held and saw the small girl. Kanna.

Kagome walked toward the void demoness. "Why did Naraku send you here, Kanna?" she asked the girl.

Tomo and Inuyasha both stood to the side, watching the female demon's every move.

Kanna did not smile. She did not even look at Kagome. She just looked forward, her mirror held in front of her. "Naraku knows your plans," she said, in a monotone voice. "He knows you wish to kill him. You will not succeed. All who follow you will perish."

Inuyasha growled and rolled his eyes. "Is that all you have to say?" he snarled. "You've wasted your time and mine."

Before he could send a Wind Scar to the demon child, Kagome shouted, "Stop, Inuyasha!"

The hanyou looked at her curiously. She shook her head at him and turned her attention back to the demon child. "Naraku can see us through your mirror, right? So he knows everything that's been going on. That's how you knew where to find me," she observed. "Go back to Naraku and take this message with you."

Kagome closed her eyes and clapped her hands together. She pictured the mirror in her mind and the force that surrounded it. Then, she felt the warmth start to flow through her body. A smile curved her lips as she imagined the mirror breaking.

"Don't!" Tomo demanded.

Kagome felt a heavy object land on her and she collapsed under it, breaking the spell. She tried to breathe when she realized that the object was actually a body.

"Get out of here, Kanna," Tomo's voice rumbled over Kagome.

The priestess opened her eyes, but couldn't see anything. Tomo had her completely covered. "I.. can't... breathe..." she tried to muffle out.

Tomo, certain that Kagome wouldn't do anything else, sat up. As Kagome coughed and gasped for air, Tomo told the void demoness, "Tell Naraku that when the time comes, we'll be ready for him."

The demoness left and the others stared at Tomo and Kagome.

"Just who do you think you are?!" Kagome shouted, standing up. "How dare you..."

"Don't ever do that again," he growled. "You almost cost us everything! You keep spouting out spells and incantations. You don't know what they'll do. You just close your eyes and hope for the best! If you want to go against Naraku, first you have to learn to control what you have. Today you were supposed to hit a bag of rice. Twice you almost hit me."

Kagome threw her hands in the air. "Well? What am I supposed to do? I can't sit around this village forever, waiting for Naraku to come to me!"

Inuyasha was quick by her side. "Let's go, then," he told her. "We can find Naraku and..."

"And then what?" Tomo spat. He waved his hands in the air. "You're going to go against him just like that? A low-class monk, an amateur demonslayer, an impulsive half-breed, and a young priestess? And nevermind a fox child!"

Kagome's eyes widened as Inuyasha unsheathed his Tetsusaiga. "You better watch who you insult," the hanyou growled.

Tomo snorted, "Do you really think I'm scared of you? I've seen the way you fight. What is your plan, Inuyasha?"

Miroku shook his head. "Tomo is right," he said, calmly. "We need a plan, a course. We still have a lot more learning to do."

"We don't have time for all of that!" Kagome shouted. She gave a frustrated sigh, "The longer we wait, the more powerful Naraku becomes. Tomo, he knows that we are here. It won't be long before he attacks us. If you've got something to teach me, Tomo, stop beating around the bush and teach me already!"

The youkai held his hands at his side and balled them up into fists. He turned on his heel and came face to face with Janashi. The young woman looked up at him. "She's right, my lord," the girl said. "It won't be much longer now. You know as well as I do, Kanna is usually the first wave."

Tomo was taken aback. He gazed at her. A mixture of betrayal and anguish floated through his eyes. Then, as calmly as possible, he said in a soft voice, "Why is it that humans are in such a damn hurry? When will you learn to take a step back and actually think about what you are doing first?"

He wheeled on the companions and glared at Kagome. "This is why humanity will never advance," he snapped at her. "All you want to do is hurry, hurry, hurry. You don't take time. You don't plan. You just rush into things. I've lived in this village for over two hundred years now. Everything was going smoothly until you showed up. If going after Naraku is so important, then leave. But, I'm warning you. Without a good plan, you will all be destroyed.

"The coming of the Demon Priestess was predicted in this village. Here is where she is supposed to learn what she needs to continue on with her battle. I cannot teach you this if you do not learn patience!

"You have so much potential," he told her, taking a step towards her and holding his hands towards her, as if he were offering her something. "You can become greater than Naraku. Greater than anyone who has ever lived. Greater than Inu no Taisho! Don't you see that?"

Kagome stared at the youkai. Never had she seen someone so passionate about his beliefs. He truly believed in the power of the Demon Priestess. It wasn't an obsession. It wasn't a dream. Kagome looked down at his hands, then she looked back up into his emerald eyes.

She offered him a small smile before whispering, "I don't want all of that. I just want to put an end to Naraku... All right, Tomo. Teach me. Show me what I need to know to defeat him."

The youkai dropped his hands. He sighed, "Very well."
