Chapter Nineteen:

Naraku smiled to himself. He waved Kanna away and thought about what had just occurred. Inuyasha had claimed Kagome. However, it seemed Kagome wasn't too thrilled with the prospect.

Naraku knew the girl claimed herself to be the Demon Priestess. Indeed, she had possession of the Shikon no Tama, which his brother had predicted would happen. She also knew how to use it a little. Mating with the inu hanyou had sealed her fate. The Shikon no Tama was now perminantly a part of her.

Instead of cursing himself, Naraku just smiled. It didn't matter to him. At least, not anymore. His power was now far greater then that small jewel. Besides, he had other plans.

Demons were gathering and coming from all over to join Naraku's cause. Together, they would bring down the humans and Naraku would be at the top. He looked at the two Chinese fox spirits. How he hated dealing with demons from the continent, but he tolerated them. The Chinese demons with their guns designed to hold Naraku's miasma had become useful. He had already tested the guns on a few lesser demons and knew they worked. They would have worked on the wolf prince, too, if that bitch hadn't interferred.

"What are you going to do about her?" Lo asked. "She's a threat to our cause."

Naraku shook his head. "Notice how her emotions control her actions. As long as she argues with the half breed, she remains weak and unstable. She won't be able to use her powers correctly."

Cho looked at the half demon curiously. She didn't know exactly what his true plans were and she didn't exactly trust him. "How do you intend to make sure they keep fighting?"

He smiled. He reached into his hoari and pulled out a small box. The box had Japanese writing all over it and the sisters couldn't make out what it was.

Naraku turned the box in his hands. Even he wasn't quite sure what it was. Kanna had found it and had brought it back to Naraku. At first, he had been confused. He read the box a few times, but still couldn't fathom where Inuyasha had gotten them from. The box even claimed to be made in Japan, but Naraku found that unlikely. He certainly had never heard of the objects the box contained.

He opened the box and pulled out one of the small square pieces of blue plastic. "This is what Kanna found. Inuyasha had discarded the whole box."

"What is it?" Lo asked, taking the small blue square from the hanyou.

"According to this box, it is called a condom. It's designed to prevent pregnancy," he told her.

Lo turned the parcel around in her hands. "How will this help us?"

Naraku called Kanna back and handed the child the box. "Once Inuyasha is sleeping," he commanded her, "place this box conveniantly near him, scattering a few around him. Make sure Kagome finds him like that."

The void demon said nothing as she took the package and disappeared. Naraku took the small square from Lo and smiled yet again. "We shall see how well Kagome deals with the deception," he said, amusement flashing in his eyes.

Inuyasha knew Kagome was upset with him, though he still didn't quite understand why. He hadn't meant to bind her to him. Besides, she wouldn't even have to suffer, he would.

He thought about ways to approach her on the subject. Each one was disasterous. He growled to himself. Why did she have to find out like this?

He hadn't wanted her to know. Hadn't wanted her to find out. He knew the risk he was taking and he knew how she would've reacted to such a risk. Inuyasha sighed to himself.

He had hoped that they would defeat Naraku before the year was up. Then, if she were to get pregnant, it wouldn't matter. The child would be safe from Naraku's grasp.

~~~
Kagome stared into the water. Now, more then anything, she wanted to go home. Tears fell from her eyes and landed into the stream.
How could he have done this? She wasn't so much angry over the fact of getting pregnant within a year. Hopefully, they'd have Naraku defeated within the next few months or so. However, she was hurt because Inuyasha hadn't told her. Again, he kept something from her, something that was important.
She knew she should be used to it by now, but that didn't lessen the pain. She loved him. She had always been upfront and honest with him. Why couldn't he show her the same curtesy? Why did he have to be so... stubborn?
"I will never understand why you allow him to make you cry," a familiar voice stated softly.
Kagome's head snapped up and she looked to see a tall youkai standing before her. He had long, silver hair, and golden eyes. Quickly, she wiped her face. "I don't know what you're talking about," she lied.
Sesshomaru said nothing, but the look he gave her told her everything. He knew she was lying and did not appreciate it.
"Kagome!" Rin shouted as she bounded to the priestess.
Kagome gave the girl a smile as the child ran to give her a hug. Rin frowned as she touched Kagome's reddened cheek. "Why are you crying?" the child innocently asked.
The priestess shrugged. "I guess I just missed you so much. It's been a while since I last saw you."
Rin shook her head. "You shouldn't cry over me. I'm here," she stated. She looked up to the taiyoukai and smiled. "Lord Sesshomaru never makes me cry. You should find someone like him."
Kagome blushed as Sesshomaru commanded, "That's enough, Rin."
"Yes, my lord," the little girl obediantly agreed. She hopped out of Kagome's lap and went to Jaken. "Come, Master Jaken. I'm hungry, let's go find some food."
The toad began to protest, but a look from Sesshomaru stopped him. Instead, he followed, grumbling the whole time.
When she found her voice, Kagome commented, "You're teaching Rin well. She'll make a fine wife one day."
She immediately regretted those words. She hadn't meant to say it like that!. "I mean..."
"I did not come here to discuss Rin's future," Sesshomaru said, giving the priestess a look that meant to drop that conversation. "I came to tell you, I've been made an offer."
Kagome hesitated, "W-what kind of offer?"
"If I join Naraku's forces, I will become a general," he told her. "He wants me to help him take over the country. After that, he intends to begin a campaign to take every other country and bring them under his control. As you know, I plan on destroying Naraku. Do you know what will happen if his plan succeeds?"
Kagome thought it over for a moment. "I'm not sure," she answered honestly. "I don't think he will succeed. I mean, I've never met any demons outside this era."
"This era?" Sesshomaru repeated suspiciously.
Kagome hadn't meant to say that either. She clapped a hand over her mouth and gasped. She hadn't even realized she had said that aloud!
The taiyoukai looked at her with interest. "Can you see the future?" he asked.
Well, now that the cat was out of the bag, there was no use keeping it from him. She supposed he would've figured it out eventually anyway. She took a deep breath, "I'm from the future."
His eyes narrowed. "How far in the future?" he questioned.
Kagome fidgetted. If only he would stop giving her the evil eye! He wasn't even supposed to know this. "Five hundred years," she answered.
"And there are no demons five hundred years from now?" he inquired.
This, the priestess did not know, so she shrugged. "If there are, I haven't met them. They keep themselves pretty well hidden. Even Inuyasha hasn't detected them."
Now the taiyoukai was intrigued. "How do you and Inuyasha get there?"
Kagome shook her head. "I'd rather not. I don't know who might be listening. I don't want to chance the wrong person finding out."
The priestess saw his eyes narrow and quickly assured him, "It's not you I don't trust. If there were another, more private way of telling you, then I would."
"What of your telepathy? You were able to call to me when you needed a way to get to that wolf," he commented.
She gave him a faint smile. "Yeah. I'm still not quite sure how I did that. However, there's this monk in the village who's teaching me how to use my powers."
What disturbed Sesshomaru the most was the idea that youkai were not in her future. He wondered if the reasoning was because of this war. But, she didn't say they didn't exist, just that she hadn't seen any. What did that mean?
"I do not take orders well, Kagome," he told her. "However, I wish to see an end to Naraku. Therefore, I have decided to join his army."
She stared at him blankly. Her first shock came when he had called her by her first name. She hadn't even realized he knew her first name. Her second shock had come when he stated, quite bluntly, that he was going to join Naraku's cause.
"Take Rin and bring her someplace safe," he ordered. "If you have the ability to travel through time, as you say, this should be quite simple for you to do."
Kagome snapped to her senses. "Wait! You're going to join Naraku, yet, you want me to keep Rin safe?" she demanded. She stood up and had her fists jabbed in her hips. "Don't you realize that if Naraku wins, he will destory humanity, including Rin? You told me Naraku wants to take over Japan and you wanted no part in it! How can you do this? Does Rin mean so little to you that you could just..."
"Listen, wench!" the taiyoukai barked, interrupting before she could finish that statement. "I am not joining the cause because I agree with Naraku. You need someone on the inside. Someone to see his movements and report them to you. Kagura is dead, so she can't help you anymore."
In a matter of moments, she had come from being "Kagome" to plummeting back down to "wench." She was spending way too much time with Inuyasha and was picking up his bad habit of speaking without thinking. She slowed down a bit and thought about what he was saying. "You are going to be a spy?" she asked.
"The wolf will be unconvincing. Besides, he's too loyal to you," he surmissed. "Unless you can find someone else willing..."
Kagome shook her head. She knew there was no one else. Kagome looked at his empty sleeve. "What about your arm? If I give you a new one, he'll notice and ask questions."
Sesshomaru did not bother to answer her. Instead, he called to Rin and told her she was to go with Kagome and do as the priestess said. "You will stay where she tells you to stay until I come to get you."
The little girl nodded and asked, "Are you leaving me now, my lord?"
For an answer, he turned and began to walk away. However, he was stopped when she ran to him and threw her arms around his legs. "Please, don't leave me, my lord," she cried. Tears streamed down her face as she sobbed into his hakama. "I don't want you to go. I heard you and Kagome talking and what you are doing is dangerous. Please, please don't go."
Sesshomaru looked down at the little girl. "Rin. Let go," he ordered.
For the first time in her life, she disobeyed him. She clung onto his leg tighter and refused to let go. "Please, don't go," she begged. "Stay with me, my lord. Or, let me come with you. I don't want you to leave me here. Alone. Without you. Please, don't go."
Kagome's breath caught in her throat and she choked back a sob. Never had she seen the child act like this.
Jaken tried to pry the child from the taiyoukai. "Let go, you stupid girl!" he demanded, trying to get his claws between her arms to pry them loose.
Still, she held on until Sesshomaru did something none of them had expected. He took the girl by the arms and pulled her away. He then bent down and looked her in the eyes. "Rin, you have to let go," he commanded. "I will come back for you. Have faith in me. You know I would never let some puny half demon get the best of me. You have my word."
The little girl nodded as she sniffled. She threw her arms around his neck and sobbed softly. He let her hold him for a moment before pulling her away again. "Stay with Kagome. She will protect you while I am away," he told her.
Kagome bent down and took the little girl in her arms. As she lifted the weeping child up, Sesshomaru stood and tilted his head slightly to the priestess. "Take care of her, priestess," he said. He then turned and began walking away. "Jaken," he called.
The toad was quick to follow. Rin laid her head on Kagome's shoulder and watched at the taiyoukai and his faithful attendant disappeared into the forest. Tears poured from the child as she choked, "What now?"
Kagome held the little girl close and sighed, "Now, we get you to safety."
