Chapter 22-Two Girls, Two Hearts, One Mind
Inuyasha ran back to the village, he thought it best that he just let everyone think that he never went in search of Kayoko anyway. The only one that knew was Koga, like he would care anyway. Meanwhile, Koga suspected that he was far away from Inuyasha, be he never expected Kayoko to wander this far into the forest alone. He quickly changed into wolf form, becoming a black wolf with ice blue eyes. He walked along the path not sensing anything, but suddenly picking up the scent of another wolf, female.
The black wolf ran towards the scent, but quickly lost it. He wondered where she could've possibly gone. He was on the scent again, but then heard a not so distant “splash!” then he lost the scent. So he decided to follow the sound. Running around and dodging tree branches, he finally reached a clearing with a small little stream, but big enough to fit a crocodile in comfortably. The water was clear and the surrounding trees were all Sakura trees. He couldn't find the mysterious wolf that he was tracking. Finally, he saw a wolf head pop out of the water and walk onto the shore, and then lay down underneath one of the shading trees nearby, just across the water. Koga found this image mesmerizing, he'd not seen very many female wolves, in fact only his mother and Ayame before Kayoko.
Her coat was a silky red color, with her sapphire green eyes glowing in his direction. Koga had the urge to follow her calm expression across the water, and so walking through the stream, the black wolf never took his eyes off of her. He emerged from the stream soaking while she was as well. She stood up on all fours to meet his gaze, and as she did, Koga noticed that up to where her legs met the rest of her body that the fur was all black on all four of her legs. He only found this more beautiful and unique. Kayoko turned to walk away and was about to, when the scent of another wolf was running towards them. Kayoko stood her ground, while Koga had the urge to seek out the new wolf, but did as Kayoko had and just stood. The two could now see the figure weaving it's way around trees. When it reached the banks of the river, it merely jumped across and landed on the other side through dust and dirt.
Koga searched the face of this new wolf on the scene, he could not place her scent, but he noticed that it had a golden coat with violet eyes. All that poor Koga could sense with his nose was that it was female. The two female wolves stood facing each other, nodding every so often either to represent no or yes. All Koga could figure was that Kayoko was having a telepathic conversation with her, instead of saying it in wolf language. Suddenly the two wolves glared at Koga, poor guy couldn't understand. Finally they started talking in wolf language.
Kayoko-Koga, do you even know who this is?
Koga-Uh…sure I do.
Not wanting to admit that he truly didn't know Koga had to lie (well he didn't have to).
Kayoko-This is Akeela.
Koga-Akeela?
Akeela-Akeela, as in Angry Killer Electrocuting Explosive Little Arson.
Koga-Oooookaayyy?
Kayoko-She looks like me… my reincarnation…ringing any bells whatsoever?
Koga-Oh yeah. So you are a wolf.
Akeela-I thought that we already established that with the sight of me as a wolf standing here talking to you before your very eyes.
Koga-Well… I um…look can we just get back to the village.
Koga gestured a nod to Kayoko, and she nodded back towards the village. The three ran off to the village to find no one in Kaede's hut.
Kayoko-Where did they all go?
Suddenly they were confronted by Inuyasha and the others.
Inuyasha-Who are you filthy, mangy wolves working for, Naraku?
Kayoko stepped closer to Inuyasha, only to have him lower his sword towards her head. `He must be confused because my scent has changed because I'm in wolf form' thought Kayoko. Koga began to talk in Wolf language.
Koga-Kayoko, should we change back now?
Kayoko-Not yet, I want to see how trustworthy and trusting Inuyasha has become over the years.
Akeela-Are you endangering our lives?
Kayoko-No, but you can't change back anyway, because…
Koga-Because you're using your powers to restrain us from changing back!
Kayoko-So it's futile to try, but go ahead and run away if that's what you wish. I do not care; I just don't want to let them know. I want to see the power and mercy Inuyasha's gained…or lost.
Koga-Do as you wish, but I will not run away.
Kayoko-Good, then you won't mind fighting.
Akeela-Who said anything about fighting?
Inuyasha-Enough! Stop conversing in Wolf and just run or die.
Kayoko transformed into a figure neither human or wolf. She was a demoness, a dragon demoness. She towered above the others about only 50 feet though. Her now tough rock hard skin was a soothing green that matched her eyes. There, perched above her eyes was a black diamond, but poor Inuyasha did not notice it.
Inuyasha-If you're not gonna tell me then I'll cut it out of you. You smell of a demon other than yourself, is it Naraku; trying to cloak his own scent? Or one of his minion incarnations?
Kayoko merely lifted her giant claw closer to Inuyasha. In her deeper, rising voice she talked.
Kayoko-I cannot give you a fair fight in this form little man. I need but to move my claw over a bit and your frail little body would be crushed under the weight and size of my claw alone.
She quickly changed into a human-like form; normal face with her green eyes and black diamond still in their usual manner (except for the diamond that only appears in true demon form). But her hair was green with a black bow tying it up very neatly. Her kimono was short and was plain green with a black belt. She walked up to Inuyasha and stared in his eyes. Inuyasha was perplexed by her actions as Kayoko winked at him.
Inuyasha-You remind me of someone.
Kayoko-Really? Who?
Inuyasha-Kayoko…what tricks are you up to now?
Kagome, Sango, Shippo, and Miroku-Kayoko?
Kayoko smirked at the sound of surprise in their voices. She quickly turned her appearance to normal, as did Koga and Akeela.
Kayoko simply walked past Inuyasha as she went to gather up sticks for a proper fire. Inuyasha wondered why Kayoko had tried to confuse him, and if he did have feelings for Kayoko, why didn't he have those same feelings for Akeela. He simply stared at his feet as his concentration on the matter only deepened. A figure walked up to Inuyasha, just standing there.
Akeela-Inuyasha, I need to talk to you.
Inuyasha-Huh? Sure Akeela what's up?
Akeela pulled Inuyasha into Kaede's hut where she could talk to him alone.
Akeela-I'm a little confused.
Inuyasha-About what, I thought Kayoko explained everything to you?
Akeela-She did, but I'm a little confused about well, why are Kayoko and I so different? I mean if we're basically the same spirit from different times, shouldn't we act the same way and understand the other's reasons for all their actions, no question?
Inuyasha was surprised by this question, never before had he ever thought about such a thing. He knew that Kagome and Kikyo were two different people, but why?
Inuyasha-You know Akeela, I truly don't know why. It could be because of certain factors in your lives, ones that don't make a difference now, but will in the future. Some things like you not knowing your father at all, when Kayoko still goes to her father's grave and grieves for him.
Akeela-Her parents are dead? How awful, I never knew.
Inuyasha-You just met her and got here. You couldn't have known. That's another thing, she met me. She met a lot of hanyous that she had sworn to protect, she protected them. Before today you didn't even know that you had powers because of a black diamond before your time. There are a lot of things you don't know.
Inuyasha turned his head away from Akeela's saddened face and toward the window that showed the sun setting.
Inuyasha-I have a theory, that every reincarnation of a spirit is better in some way than the last. Kayoko is a little more serious and knowledgeable yet still very humorous and pleasant to be around, but you're more…
Akeela-Bubbly and perky.
Inuyasha-Yeah, that's how it is with Kagome and Kikyo.
Akeela-Who's Kikyo?
Inuyasha-Uh well…?
Kayoko stepped into the hut as the two turned around to see her serious and solemn face staring back at them.
Kayoko-She was a priestess who guarded to the Shikon No Tama, who fell in love with a hanyou, who wanted to make him human only so she could live a normal life without having to guard the jewel, and ended up trying to kill him when she didn't get her facts straight. That's who Kikyo was and is.
