Chapter 10 - Release

"Do you honestly believe that I would help you to destroy their lives just like you destroyed mine?! I may still harbor hatred for Inuyasha, but that does not compare to the contempt I feel for you! You are the one who killed me and led me to believe Inuyasha had given me that fatal wound! You led Inuyasha to believe I had betrayed him and led him to steal the jewel! I would have been happy; free from my responsibilities as the protector of the Shikon no Tama, but no. You had to steal that from me. All because of your jealous heart!"

Her miko training disregarded, Kikyo hurled an energy ball he had shown her how to make in hopes she would use it against Inuyasha. His eyes wide, the energy ball hit him and threw him back against the wall. Without waiting to see the damage of her actions, Kikyo turned and walked through the door and out of the castle.

Naraku rose from the splintered beams surrounding him. "Well that was interesting. Guess I'll have to use my other plan."

* * * * * * * * * *

Kikyo had left the castle grounds as quickly as possible. She knew the energy ball wasn't enough to kill Naraku. But it did suffice in distracting him long enough for her to get away.

`Like -hell- I would help him destroy their lives.' Her walk slowed as she thought about the new information she had. `They love each other. They are slow to admit it, but it's true. He protects her like no one else. And he is open with her! They even have their own makeshift family. I couldn't take him away from that. That girl. My reincarnation. She'll have the life I always wanted. But they deserved to be happy; they've been through a lot and they still trust each other. Something Inuyasha and I didn't have.'

Kikyo sank to her knees in the middle of the forest she had been walking through. `These roots look familiar……' A small intake of breath could be heard.

"The Goshinboku."

Of all places she could have rested, it was the sacred tree she had pinned Inuyasha to 52 years ago. "Inuyasha was not the one who betrayed me. Naraku tricked us. Inuyasha is not at fault for my death, or my half-life, now. Here is the place where our relationship truly ended all those years ago. Inuyasha, I release you from you promises and my claim to you is no longer." A calming feeling overcame Kikyo and she moved out of the forest, watching the fading sun.
