Chapter 9 : Encounter of Two Evils

"Thank you for joining me, Kikyo." The slippery voice would have made Kikyo shiver if she didn't have her miko training. Even so, her eyes narrowed with her reply.

"What do you want, Naraku." A soft chuckle arose from the corner as the demon began to stand. A hand reached out from the folds of darkness and grabbed Kikyo's clay arm. Involuntarily, Kikyo pulled back.

"Kukuku. Still as fiery as ever, aren't you."

"Why am I here." Her patience with him was thinning with each passing minute.

"Very well. Allow me to explain. As you know, for the past two years, that human girl has been traveling with your former lover, searching for the jewel shards." THAT got Kikyo's attention.

`What is he plotting now…he WON'T harm Inuyasha. But that girl…'

"Surely you have noticed how close they have come," Naraku continued, a thin smile evident on his shadow cast face.

`He is just trying to push me,' Kikyo coached herself. "And why would their feelings concern me? Or you, for that matter." The cold mask of her face did not betray her. Inside, she felt her stone heart breaking into a million pieces.

"Well, she is making it harder for you to drag Inuyasha to hell. Before, he would have gone with you willingly. But now he wants to stay alive so he can protect her. What about you? He has forgone his promise to you. Doesn't that bother you?"

"And why, Naraku, do you care about my part in this? What if I were to say I enjoy a challenge? You are not telling the whole truth. Tell me what you would get out of my actions."

"As intuitive as during life, my dear. You are correct. I do want something more. Whenever that girl is around, Inuyasha somehow becomes stronger and he is harder to inflict pain upon. He protects those humans and that fox brat with his life, although I don't understand why. And that girl has strong spiritual powers. Perhaps even stronger than yours. I'll let you in on a secret, Kikyo. That girl is more likely to destroy me than Inuyasha." A scowl scarred Naraku's dismissive demeanor.

When Naraku finished, Kikyo's mind was spinning. `He fights better when she is around………protects those people with his life……….she may be more powerful than me!' A cleared throat brought Kikyo back to the present. "Why don't you simply destroy her then?"

"I have tried. Numerous times. But that damned hanyou prevents any physical harm. However, I do have a plan. That girl may possess miko powers, but she is still only human. The easiest way to destroy a human is through the heart. To kill them emotionally is to kill them physically. And if that girl were to leave him, Inuyasha would be heartbroken having lost another girl that he has loved." A smile replaced the frown and he looked up to Kikyo.

"Loved?"

"Yes. He loved you very deeply before you pinned him to that tree. And then you died and left him all alone. You were the only thing he had, Kikyo. His mother and father were dead, his only brother wanted -him-dead, and he had no other friends but you. Then that girl woke him up. At first, he hated her because she reminded him of you. But over the past two years, they have made their own little family. And she loves him. Truly loves him. I overheard the slayer and your sister talking about them the other day. Every time she sees him with you, it's a blow to her heard. She's just a few hits away from crumbling. All we would need to do is get Inuyasha to continually come to you. Eventually, she would be fed up and leave, allowing me to kill her and you to take Inuyasha to hell."

Naraku finished explaining his plan and looked to the women standing in front of him, expecting a readily answered "yes". What he saw shocked him.

"Ki-Kikyo?"
