Chapter 3
By the fire light...
After getting yelled at by both girls for influencing the young and impressionable mind of Shippo, who personally didn't mind in the least what happened. Inuyasha and Miroku sulk for a bit as they watch both women, whom they love with all their heart, dote upon the Kitsune with all matters of tenderness....
"Why does he get all the attention...?" Inuyasha mutters. His ear still flat against his head in sheer aggravation as his gold eyes glare at the child who shivers a little bit in fear. Which only encourages both Sango and Kagome to dote on him more.
Watching the fox, Miroku ends up echoing his sentiment, for the wrestle he and Inuyasha had was all in good fun. Both of them know it, but try explaining to that to either of the two women who tend to overreact sometimes in their opinion, and well...lets just say they got yelled still, and then on top of that.
They had been ignored since the little fiasco happened...
He watches though and smiles for his friend who is like a lovesick puppy. He is glad that as Inuyasha stares at Kagome with such longing in his eyes, that the feeling was well reciprocated. For although the young miko turns away as she catches him staring, the fact that she can't seem to without turning pink, is a plus indeed for his hanyou friend.
Observing his friend's reaction to her flustered gaze, he can't help but notice how Inuyasha beams in pleasure.
"So something good happened in the forest?"
"You could say that Miroku....you could say that."
Miroku looks at the one whom he considers his best friend. One subject that pops into his mind apparent, and it is one that would be risky. But as Inuyasha's only male friend and confidant, it is one worth attempting. "Inuyasha...what are you going to do about...well....Kikyo?"
"You don't have to be afraid to say her name...."
"I know...but you usually don't take to kindly when anyone else talks about her."
"That's because most of you don't like her very much." The hanyou replies with a wry look about his amber features.
"True Inuyasha true...but can you really blame us?"
Inuyasha looks at his friend with a baffled look, that Miroku knows all to well. One that although his friend is loyal and alert when it comes to their safety. Sometimes he can be a little dense...
"What do you mean?"
"Let's see...Every time Inuyasha and I mean every time, that Kikyo has come around. She has tried to take you to hell and not only that she has also tried to kill Kagome, while sending her soul catchers not only after Sango and myself, but also little Shippo."
Inuyasha remains silent and looks away. His gaze is blank and emotionless as if not wanting to admit what the monk is saying is true. Taking a big risk that could cost him another beating from his friend, Miroku continues to talk, to make the hanyou think back.
"Look Inuyasha whether or not you believe me, deep down you know what I am saying is the truth. Kikyo is dead. She has been dead for over 50 years"
"I know that...it's just..."
"Just what Inuyasha?" Miroku says calmly.
"It's just that she's Kikyo...."
Inuyasha looks to his friend, only to be met with Miroku shaking his head in disagreement. "She isn't Kikyo. Remember, how she was brought back, and what it nearly cost us, what it nearly cost you?"
"Urasuwe...Kagome..."
"Yes...the demon witch, whom from what both you and Shippo told me took out Kagome's soul. And Inuyasha I know the only way for that to have happened...was for someone to call out her name.” The Monk whispers softly. The hanyou looking up rapidly into his friend's eyes with a mixture of fear and self loathing.
“It is not your fault Inuyasha, the clay double had come at that time according to Shippo. You couldn't help it, but it almost cost, you and almost cost Kagome your lives and your souls....” Miroku continues on. “And as you well know, that by now Kagome's souls has regenerated somewhat, for I am sure you have begun to realize by now. After all this time, that Kikyo is becoming more human.”
“What???! How did you know?”
“It is a long story Inuyasha? One that is best left for another day. But I want to know something? Since you have seen her last, tell me has she really changed at all? Or has she still insisted on taking your life?”
Remaining silent, he watches as for the first time, as Inuyasha actually listens to something about the dead priestess and not scream or yell as he has done before. Miroku continues and quietly.
"She continues to do it doesn't she Inuyasha.”
“Yes...”
“And from what you have told me about her in the past. Would the one that is here now do that to you Inuyasha? Think about it. Because I bet you will realize that the Kikyo you knew is far different from the one you know now. The Kikyo you loved is never coming back. And the fact that Kagome is here now and we all know she is her reincarnation, should tell you something else, Inuyasha."
"Like what?"
"The fact that she is her own person as we all know and very different from Kikyo, should clue you in that the old Kikyo loved you. That when she died her spirit, in Kagome, once it came down the well, found yours again....so that not only could she complete her job of the jewel, but to be with you.... This new one that walks around is filled with nothing but malice, and hate and vanity...she is not the Kikyo you once loved."
Listening Inuyasha's ears twitch and as he sees the thoughtful look on the hanyou's face, he realizes, that just maybe...they have finally gotten through to the young man, whose heart he has given to the miko from the future.
Standing up and walking away, he joins the two girls and leaves him alone. Chatting with them for a few moments, Kagome looks at him with a thoughtful expression. Bending down to the fire for a moment, she finishes cooking some ramen for Inuyasha. And under the watchful and curious eyes of the other two. They watch as she picks it up and her own cup of soup, and joins him, where he sits by the gently burning embers.
"Inuyasha....?"
Gazing up at her eyes filled with warmth, he barely manages to resist pulling her down for a kiss. Taking the ramen from her hands, he begins to eat, and with Kagome next to him, he realizes for the first time, that unlike with Kikyo...he feels safe and wanted.
"Kagome?"
"Hmmmm?" She pauses to look at him in mid bite. He can't help but chuckle as she stops.
"Finish that bite and let me ask you something"
Nodding her head and doing just that, Kagome rests her spoon in the soup container and looks at him.
"What is it?"
"Have I ever hurt you?"
"Hurt...me?" Kagome looks away as if lost in thought. "What would be your definition of hurt....?"
Stricken a little by her answer, he begins to get up with an intent to walk away, when she reaches out and stops him. "Inuyasha, hurt can be defined in so many ways. Physically...you haven't...or at least haven't intentionally." She smiles warmly and squeezes his hand reassuringly.
"I hear a but coming..."
"Psychic now are we..."
Inuyasha looks at her laughing eyes, and relaxes a little more. "But to be honest Inuyasha, up until you finally admitted your feelings...it hurt...it hurt a lot."
"I don't understand...."
"I know Inuyasha...I know...but how can I explain it...I know! Kouga is actually a perfect example."
Frowning at the sound of that wolf's name, Kagome giggles and Inuyasha glares at her.
"What's so funny? I don't like him one bit!"
"Then tell me Inuyasha...why don't you like him?"
"Huh?"
"You heard me Inuyasha...why don't you like him?"
"What has my feelings towards that FUCKING WOLF got to with this?" He asks with frustration.
"Inuyasha watch your language. But think about how you react with Kouga when he is around us okay. And then think about it some more....then I believe you will have answered your own question."
Looking at her confused, he savors her simple touch of her hands within his and when Shippo bounds over asking for a story, she looks to him as if seeking approval.
"Go ahead...you and Miroku have left me much to think about..."
`Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Nodding her head and then taking her soup with her, he watches as she begins to tell a story to the fox, and out of the corner of his eye, he smirks a little as his best friend gets the crap beaten out of him, by the slayer. His thoughts though are still confused despite the familiarity of everything around him. So he continues to stare into the fire light...
