Before he would go and visit anyone else, Hizumeha had to go see his mistress first and foremost. This was how it had always been, and how it would always be. She took first priority in his life over anyone else. Over Kuza, over the others, over his new toy.
Finding that Sesshoumaru had gotten there first, he hung back in the shadows of the hallway and waited, listening to what was said between them like a spy.
Things could not have been better for for the horse. The fool had accidentally spilled his dirty little secret to her and she had reacted much like he had predicted she would. A male dog may go out and hump anything, even a man's leg, but a female dog's priority was to be alpha female, the one and only one. He had known her so long that she was predictable to him. He could count on her to demand loyalty and faithfulness.
He was predictable too. He would pick up the pieces of her life and mend them together so that he could keep her for himself. He was loyal and faithful to her in entirely different ways. The ways she wanted and could count on in return.
After the inuyoukai left, stoically and stiffly walking down the hallway in the opposite direction, Hizumeha entered her room like a thief and quickly knelt by the side of her bed. “Akanesuji,” he whispered into her ear. “I'm here.”
She did not answer, her eyes still going a pure white. He recalled in his mind those days long ago when she was in exile and he was assigned to watch her. They were young and in training to be shiobi. Their days spent sparring against each other. “If I ever take the deep sleep my brother, will you watch over me?” she had asked. He remembered telling her that he would, as long as she would do the same for him. She had smiled big at him that day. They cut their hands and bound them together as ninja clan siblings, and then he had kissed her.
She had jumped back in shock, but then giggled and kissed him back, their lips touching so lightly. Without thinking he put his fingers to his lips and tried to recall how it felt. It had been so long ago, almost a dream to him now. She had been his first kiss and though it had not been hers, he always believed in his heart of hearts that those days as young warriors meant something to her. They had been bound as deep friends ever since. She the loving noble and he her loving servant. He cursed that he could not be more to her.
She would always look down on him as a horse, a beast of burden, a faithful companion. He wanted to be more. He would give up everything for her. Everything he had she had given him anyways. He was nothing without her.
He looked down to her swollen belly, thinking it too large on her frame. Had Sesshoumaru not seen that she would deliver soon and not in a few more years? Manatsu had decided he was going to be this size, and soon that size would have to come out. Every youkai pregnancy was different. In curiosity he opened her kimono and inspected the mound, listening and pushing. The boy's heart was strong, his head down low in her pelvis. Yes, she would deliver very soon.
The horse healer was taken aback by the hard kick to his ear. “Do you want out?” he asked the boy, and he kicked again.
Hizumeha turned to her head and face and with his hands turned her to look at him. He squeezed her cheeks and pressed his forehead to hers. “Akanesuji. He won't sleep with you. You must wake up.” She wrinkled her nose and he knew that she wasn't in as deep a sleep as she appeared. “Come on Inukoro (puppy), you must wake up. Your baby doesn't want you to sleep.”
“Manatsu.” she muttered.
“Yes, Inukoro. Manatsu wants out. You're hurting him.”
“Sleep...”
He laid her back down and ran down the halls for Kuza. If anyone knew what to do with pregnant women, it would be his head mare. She was the cleverest midwife he had ever seen, having an instinct with babies. She had already helped deliver several infants at home, increasing the number of future shinobi warriors. She had even turned a breach birth. Part of it was her infinite patience, the other part of it her complete lack of sympathy to other's pain and suffering. She knew when to get a woman to push and when to let her rest.
The women were down in the stream, kicking and playing with their bare legs showing, yukata's hiked up and tucked into belts or not at all. They all acted rather surprised to see him and when he looked up the castle walls to see Miroku waving down at him, he knew why. His little herd was being the tease. “Come on girls, we have things to do. No more dallying with the boy toy.”
Hin stuck her tongue out behind his back, Hiza gave him the finger. Kuza just smirked and picked up her things since she was in his line of sight. What Hizumeha didn't know was that the girls were taking more of a shine to his little play thing than they were supposed to.
Miroku had gained a talent for torturing them as much as they tortured him. He had gone from little flirt to out right bad ass in the sack.
That boy would never be right again.
And it was all their faults.
Getting in their customary line behind their lord and master, they acted like fools until they got up towards the castle. Then their demeanors changed to the super quiet, calm and reserved proper ladies they were supposed to be. Each folded their arms into the sleeves of their kimono and walked demurely with their heads bowed down. This was the proper way. They looked like ducks in a row.
Hizumeha ordered the three lowest in rank to the women's wing to change into proper attire, meaning court garb and socks, hair combs and makeup, then led Kuza to Akanesuji's bedroom. She saw her mistress there, the one who had always been so kind and loving to her and kelt down beside her much as her husband had before her.
She too owed much to the inuyoukai. If it hadn't been for the lady, she would be still sitting at home an old maid. Kuza was no longer a maiden, but a mature woman. She was older than Hizumeha by at least a hundred years and was no longer considered great marriage material. Her auspicious match making to Hizumeha had been a great blessing, giving her higher rank and social status. The love between her husband and the dog she understood completely, as he had been honest with her. She would always be first wife, but his heart would belong to the one he could never have.
Her heart belonged no where at all. She had never really fallen in love.
The mare leaned over the dog's big belly and came to much the same conclusion her husband had. The question of waking her up was more difficult, as she seemed determined to go. The two horses discussed the situation in depth, Hizumeha recalling how Rin had been the one to wake her from it last time, and the mare had a counter suggestion.
“Break her water. She'll have no choice but to wake up then.”
“Don't you think that is going a little too far Kuza?”
“If we don't, the child will starve and die. Her body will have nothing to give him.”
It was a tough decision to make. He tried to shake her, talk to her some more. She only mumbled a few words and tried to go back to sleep. Desperate times called for desperate measures though, and giving Kuza a stern look, made her swear never to speak a word of what they were about to do.
The stallion took a look out post outside the door as his wife spread the woman's legs and did the deed. Soon, nature would make her body start it's contractions and she would have no choice but to wake up. Kuza opened the door and nodded to Hizumeha, who left immediately. Kuza snuck down the hall and back to the women's wing where she too would get dressed for the evening.
Hizumeha tried to find someone, anyone, he could send to “discover” Akanesuji's broken water. He was hoping for Sango or Kagome since they were women and would figure it out. When he could only find Rin and Shippo, he had little choice but to get the girl and boy to do it.
“Greetings Lady Rin, have you seen your mother lately?”
“No. She's been taking a lot of naps lately.”
“Do you think you could take me to her?”
“Go find her yourself.”
“It's not appropriate for me to see her alone in her bed chambers. I should have a chaperon for your mother's honor.”
Rin rolled her eyes in frustration. She had had enough of all these stupid rules and regulations. They were asinine and insulting. Mommy was a big girl. She could take care of her honor herself. If any man dared look at her funny she would just beat the shit out of him.
“Please,” the horse said.
“Fine. Come on.” Rin stood and grabbed up her kitsune, holding him around the wrist as he sucked and sucked on his lollipop. The horse followed the two little children back up to the room, knowing what he would find.
Rin pushed open the door, her mother sprawled out and a large wet spot all over the lower half of the bed. “Oh gross. Mommy peed the bed.”
“She must be really sick,” Shippo said, going up to the dog demon and feeling her forehead for fever.
“No kids, I think your mommy's water has broke. You should go tell your daddy.”
“Are you sure. It sure looks like pee.”
Shippo gave a sniff. “It ain't pee, Rin-chan.”
Hizumeha gave the kitsune a little odd look. He sure was close to his little princess. Rin huffed and cocked her hip to one side. “Dammit. I don't want to talk to father. You go tell him Shippo.”
“I ain't talking to your dad.”
Hizumeha hadn't expected this little problem. “Why don't we all go see his lordship together, that way, none of us get into with him.”
“You hate him too?” Rin asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Eh.” The horse nodded and all three were in agreement. Sesshoumaru had become quite the pain. The three left the room and walked down the halls, each of them steeling themselves to see his high and mightiness.
Sesshoumaru was sitting on his shins in utter stillness. His back was turned to the door and all the three could see was his long hair falling almost to the floor. The fuzzy mantle curled in a pile to his side. “What,” he said plainly. He could tell by their smells it was his hormonal little daughter, the stinky little fox and the horse he had grown to hate with a burning passion.
“Mommy's water has broke.”
There was a long moment of silence. It was if his had not heard them. Rin huffed and started to turn away. She was not going to waste her time on her moody father. Baka inu. Stupid dog.
“Leave Hezumeha.” his voice came before she could leave the doorway. “I want you and your little troupe out of my home before midday tomorrow.” Separate the horse from his beloved, and make them both suffer. Very convenient.
“No, my lord. I will not leave. Akanesuji will need Kuza's help. She is a trained midwife.”
“Splendid idea. Leave Kuza here for the winter. I will send her to you in the spring. You are dismissed.”
Hizumeha did not like this turn of events. Turning on his heel he left the two children to fend for themselves before the inuyoukai. Indeed the horse was displeased and Sesshoumaru felt a sick twisted joy in his heart.
“Shippo,” Sesshoumaru said in his deep hard voice. The little kitsune stopped sucking on his lollipop and held perfectly still. “You will watch the horse and report to me if he gets near my wife.” In a scared voice with trembling legs, the little boy said “hai”, bowed low and ran away. “Come Rin. Sit with me.”
The girl did not trust her father and what he would say or do. She was not so brave alone with him as she was when her mother had been there too. With dread and loathing she came to his side and sat, holding her face up high and letting her eyes fall on the dog mask as well. They did not look at each other but sat like two matched pieces of china.
She waited and waited, never moving. While he was making her nervous, she tried hard not to let it show.
Sesshoumaru watched her in the farthest ring of his vision, her little hands moving ever so slightly on the tops of her thighs. He was still so angry at her for her cross words at him last time and he suspected there was something afoot. “Why were you in the company of the horse and the fox unchaperoned?”
“Because Kagome and InuYasha left me to go have sex.”
Well that wasn't the answer he was looking for. “What did the horse want with you?”
“He wanted me to take him to mommy. He said he needed a chaperon to see her in her bed chamber.”
Sesshoumaru frowned. The horse was up to something. “What else did the horse say.”
“That he hated you and didn't want to get into it with you.” Rin smiled, thinking herself smart. Sesshoumaru already knew the horse hated him just as much as he hated the horse back. As for what the horse would need Rin as a human shield for, he wasn't sure. He knew he had not told his wife about Kagura, so then what was it he was expecting a fight over? Seeing his stupid wife alone? Right now, the way he was feeling, he could have her.
“Do you really hate me Rin?” he asked, wanting to hear her reply. Rin would not answer him, instead she sat and stared at the armor some more. “I will take your silence as a yes. You may pack your things and leave Rin. You serve no purpose here. I suggest going with the horse. You may find yourself a home with his little shinobi orphans since you wish so badly to be a warrior.”
The little girl let out a gasp and started to cry. She grabbed her father's sleeve and began begging forgiveness. “I am sorry father. I'm sorry. Don't send me away. I do love you. I really do.”
“You are no longer my child. I have a real son now. You are dismissed.” Sesshoumaru never moved, his revenge against his daughter complete. She would find herself without the comfort of a castle, her servant Jaken, her little kitsune friend. She would never call him a stupid dog to his face again. The little girl realized that he would not turn to her now, he ignored everything she said, every pull on his clothes. Sobbing she ran away.
The inu stood and collected himself, straightening his clothes and brushing his hair. Now he had his brother to deal with.
