Chapter Twenty-seven

Thankfully, the house Raine travelled to was on the edge of the forest and Thor didn't have to go into the village to keep an eye on her. He coudl stay in a tree, undetected, and make sure she was safe. He could sense great worry coming from her and her sister also the smell of illness was thick in the air surrounding the house.

He jumped to a lower branch and took a closer look at Raine. He smiled. His pup was growing well and in good health. Thor often wondered if since his pup was o human decent if it would be weak, but then he would think of his uncle InuYasha and saw how powerful he was. The pup came from the most powerful youkai bloodline in all Japan, that was enough. Thor knew his pup would grow up well. After all it would have the two best parents in the world.

The young youkai prince sighed and looked dreamily at Raine.

*oOo*

Raine put her palm to her father's forehead; he was burning up. This heightened her worry and fear tenfold. The symptoms were the same as her mother's. She wiped the sweat from his face with the sleeve of her kimono and kissed his cheek. She hoped and prayed that the gods would not take him away from her.

“You must be hungry. Come I just finished dinner.” Rumiko said standing in the door way.

Raine nodded.

“Should you be around a sick person? I mean you are pregnant.” Rumiko said.

“He is my father. I will not leave his side when he needs me most.” Raine said.

Rumiko admired her sister's determination. Even though being around their sick father meant risking the health of her unborn child, she still took care of him. She was glad her big sister had returned home; their entire family had missed her and always wondered when she would visit. Sadly the one time she did visit was because their father's life was in danger.

“Why haven't you written?” Rumiko asked.

In reality, Raine didn't know why she hadn't written. She'd been away for so long and she hadn't sent them one letter. This did not look good.

“I don't know.” Raine answered.

“Oh stop lying.” Rumiko said.

“I'm not lying.” Raine said.

“Yes you are. You think you're so much better than us now that you've married the son of a minor lord don't you? We're not good enough for you anymore; we're of too low a class for you to associate with! Honestly Raine I never thought you of all people would turn out like this.” Rumiko said as tears started streaming down her face.

“Rumiko that's not true.” Raine said.

She, very slowly, got up from next to her father and walked over to Rumiko. She sighed.

“You know I'd never ever betray you like that.” She said.

When she tried to hug Rumiko, the girl slapped her arms away and ran.

Now, not only was her father probably going to die but now she had to deal with a sister that hated her.

*oOo*

At dinner, Yosuke could feel the tension between his wife and sister-in-law Rumiko. He wondered what happened between them that could have caused such bitterness. They all looked so happy to see her and now Rumiko was mad at her. He would have to ask Raine later when they were alone in bed.

“These are the best rice balls I've ever had.” Yosuke said trying to lighten the mood, but Rumiko seemed to ignore him.

“Rumiko, Yosuke paid you a compliment.” Raine said.

Rumiko excused herself and left.

Raine sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. She did not mean to forget her family and she admitted that it was wrong and selfish of her but she really did not know why she had forgotten about the three siblings she raised and her father. She couldn't have been so caught up in her own life that she forgot about them. Raine felt very guilty and wished she could make it up to her sister.

“You guys finished?” She asked Kaoru and Kiko. They nodded.

Raine picked up everyone's dishes and went to the kitchen to tidy up. Once she was finished she and Yosuke retired to her old bedroom. All of her things were at the home she now shared with Yosuke; the only thing left was the bed. They set down their bags and left the door ajar for when Jiro returned from his hunting trip.

Once Raine got settled into bed Yosuke thought it was time he asked her about Rumiko.

“Mind sharing what's going on between you and your sister?” He asked.

Raine sighed.

“Not right now Yosuke, I'm tired.” She said.

Jiro jumped into the tree next to Thor with a dead rabbit in his mouth. He leaned into Thor's hand and he scratched behind the cat's ears. Jiro started to pur.

“You keep a good eye on her for me?” Thor asked.

Jiro nodded.

If his timing was correct, Thor estimated Raine to be about three months pregnant, which meant she would give birth in a month or two which made him very excited. Soon Thor would be able to look into the eyes of his pup and smile. He would love his pup unconditionally and vowed to protect he or she until the day he died. He would train his pup the same way his parents trained him and Raine would be there to reward him or her for their progress and performance.

He had already chosen names. If it were female he wanted her to be named Sakura and if it were a boy he wanted it to be named Sesshomaru. He chose Sakura because Raine smelled like the sakura blossoms at his home and Sesshomaru because he honoured and respected his father as a person and naming his child after him would make him more than proud.

He couldn't wait to tell Raine, the smile that would appear on her face would make him the happiest youkai in the world.

*oOo*

The dispute between her and Rumiko hurt Raine deeply and it bothered her that she had forgotten her family so she cleared her head the only way she knew how; taking a walk.

Her life since her marriage had been so surreal and full of lies and betrayl. She had done things she never thought she would do. Adultery was something she swore to herself she would never in her life do and still she had done it. If she were not married to someone she did not love it would not have been so easy. If her father had not told her to marry someone she did not love she would not have done it.

She scoffed. Her father was possibly on his death bed and here she was blaming him for her infidelity. Since when was she so cynical. It seemed true that marriage changed her. When she was single she was so sweet and innocent, at least she would like to think so, but marrying Youske seemed to make her into someone she didn't want to be; an unfaithful wife. To he knowledge she had never not liked anyone and now there was Romy.

She halted her train of thought and looked up at the sky, searching for the star her mother had claimed for her; the North star.

“Okaasan, I could really use your guidance.” She thouhgt.

She felt two strong male arms envelope her body and come to rest on her swollen belly. She felt a nose on her neck and smelled that familiar smell and knew exactly who it was.

Raine turned around and was face to face with the one man she loved more than anything. She tip-toed and leaned forward to kiss him. It felt to her like their lips hadn't touched in an eternity and they couldn't have tasted sweeter.

She pulled away from him and ran her fingers through his smooth and silky hair as she stared into his sapphire eyes.

“What are you doing here?” She asked.

“What do you think of Sakura if its a girl and Sesshomaru if our pup is a boy?” Thor asked.

Raine sighed. “Thor I'm not too sure if its “our” child or not.” She said sadly.

“It is “our” child. I can smell it the child is a hanyou.” He said.

Raine gasped. “Really? Oh dear Kami I'm really having your baby?” She asked.

Thor nodded. “Yes Raine. You're having my child.” He said.

Raine squealed and hugged him. “Oh Thor those names are perfect. I haven't even thought of any.” She said.

Thor pulled her off of him and looked into her eyes.

“Are you okay? I sense sadness within you.” He said.

“It's my sister. She thinks that I think that I'm better than them because I married a minor lord. She thinks I forgot them, which I did, but still I don't know why I did. I didn't mean to forget them, I didn't mean to hurt her. Really I didn't.” Raine said.

“Why don't you tell me about your family?” Thor asked.

For the next hour Thor and Raine spoke to each other about their respective families and compared family related experiences. They spoke of their siblings and parents and how they were raised and slowly came to know more about each other. It was a very engaging conversation and they listened to each other attentively.

“When my mother got sick we all thought she would just get better, but she died and when that happened my world just fell in on me and I didn't know what to do with myself. We were so close. I felt lost and alone. It just hurt so bad to know that she was gone.” Raine said.

“I know how you feel. I had a human sister, she was adopted and she died of old age without any children; she couldn't have any and we were so very close. We always argued but we loved each other to death. When she died it was like a lost a part of me; like I had lost my best friend.” Thor said.

Thor grabbed Raine by her shoulders and pulled her into the longest, most passionate kiss they had ever shared. When he pulled away from her she almost fell backward; shocked by the sudden kiss.

“I have to go, your husband is coming,” He kissed her one last time. “I love you.” He said and sped off before he could be seen.

Yosuke walked up to Raine and wrapped a blanket around her to provide her with warmth.

“You have to stop wandering off by yourself. It's dangerous.” He said.

Yosuke was wrong; Thor was there and he would always make sure she and his pup were safe.
