Chapter Twenty-six
Raine took a deep breath; inhaling the fresh air that surrounded her. It felt so very good to be flying through the skies on Jiro's back. As fantastic as her skin felt, her stomach was another issue. They had been flyin non-stop for about a day, she and and Yosuke hadn't even stopped to make camp, the just slept on Jiro's back the night before. She had been in sucha rush to get to her father, that she forgot to pack food. She mentallu kicked herself; she should have prepared better.
Yosuke took his attention off of the beautiful scenery and paid attention to Raine; she looked a bit tired which was understandable since they hadn't stopped since they left home and hadn't eaten either. He looked ahead and he could vaguely see what looked like a village. Once on the out skirts of the village he landed Jiro.
“What are we doing here?” Raine asked.
“Getting you something to eat.” Yosuke said.
Jiro transformed into his minimum size and jumped into Raine's arms; finally able to rest after a long trip. They walked through the entire village but since it was considerably smaller that they one they lived in and not as busy no one seemed to sell food. It looked like everyone grew their own crops.
They sighed. They'd have to find another village.
*oOo*
The village miko was in her shrine mixing herbal teas when she sensed a hanyou aura nearby, not a malevolent one, but you could never be too sure. She picked up her bow and arrow and followed the aura; arrow fixed to her bow and ready to purify any hanyou she found.
The closer she got to the hanyou aura, she began to feel something else; a youkai was close as well. Probably the parent. This youkai was very powerful, the strongest she'd ever sensed and would be a challenge but she would run it out of her village, no youkai was going to disturb the peace.
She followed the auras, getting closer and closer.
What she found however, she did not expect; a cat, a man and a pregnant woman who was the source of the hanyou aura. What she couldn't find was the youkai, but these two seemed like they needed her so she would deal with the hanyou later.
“Can I help you?” She asked.
“Me and my wife here were just looking for some place to get something to eat.” Yosuke answered.
His wife was she? The why was she carrying a hanyou child if he was human? That was none of her business. As a miko her job was to look after the people so she would help this odd couple.
“Come with me.” The miko said.
*oOo*
Thor sighed when the miko left with Raine and her husband. He did not expect her to show up. He had been following Raine and her husband since they departed, keeping an eye on her. The miko almost blew his cover. Raine did not need to know he was there. He couldn't follow them now that they were going into the miko's shrine. He'd wait in the forest until they left.
*oOo*
The young man and woman bowed and said their thank you's before continuing on their journey. Was the man human or youkai. He had to be human; she felt no youkai aura around him. It seemed his wife had been unfaithful.
Speaking of youkia, she was supposed to got after the youkai she sensed but it seemed that it had already gone. Strange, youkai ususally wrecked havoc and destroyed human villages. Well not all of them but most. Well what ever its business was in her village, it had been dealt with and fortunately it was gone.
*oOo*
Jiro grew to his full size adn Raine and Yosuke got onto his back. Soon they were in the sky, on their way to Raine's home village.
Raine prayed that she would get home in time. Her mother had become very ill and died now her father was sick and she feared that he would follow in her footsteps. She just wasn't strong enough to have another one of her parents die; she just wouldnt be able to bare it.
Yosuke could almost see the sadness eteched acroos Raine's face. He put his hand on her shoulder in a comforting fashion. Knowing that her father could possibly die brought back the feelings he had when Chimu had died. Yosuke had not gotten over it as yet but he had been so busy with Raine that he didn't think about it much.
“It's okay, I know how you feel.” Yosuke said.
Raine sighed. He didn't understand, not fully. He had lost parent. She could lose both.
*oOo*
Rumiko dipped the cloth in water and squeezed it out. She folded it into a rectangle and placed it on her father's forehead. She sighed and put her hands in her lap. Ever since he got sick he'd been bed ridden. For the past few days all he did was sleep, which was good since he needed to rest but it was beginning to worry Rumiko. Her mother had done the same thing when she fell ill, that was what Kiko said; he was the only person in the house to remember. Rumiko feared her father would die just like her mother had. If that happened she and her sister and brotehr would have no one except Raine and she lived so far away.
She leaned forward and kissed her father's cheek. He was so young, only thirty-nine and already death was knocking at his door; threatening to take him away. But she wasn't about to let death take him. She would do everything in her power to keep his soul grounded to the earth.
Kaoru rose from his side and took up the bowl of water. She took one last look at her father and left. She poured the water into one of the many plants surrounding their home. It was almost sunset and she needed to start dinner for Kaoru and Kiko.
Kaoru was too young to remember their mother's death so she found their father's illness normal (they had not the heart to tell her that her father exhibited the same behaviours as their mother). She thought it was just a common cold and would soon go away but she and Kiko knew it could be something fatal.
She went outside where Kaoru was playing with Kiko.
“Kiko, Kaoru I'm starting dinner. When it gets dark come inside.” She said.
“Hai.” The two shouted back and continued playing.
Rumiko thought it so sweet of Kiko to pay extra attention to Kaoru to keep her mind off of their father.
The people in her village loved her family and she knew they would watch Kaoru and Kiko as she cooked but she still told them to come in when it got dark. She felt so odd being three years younger than Kiko and telling him when to return to the house.
She put a frying pan to heat up as she chopped up some vegetables; mushrooms, carrots etcetera, to stir fry with some rabbit meat she bought earlier. She decided to make some rice balls to sort of balance out the meal. Rumiko sighed before humming a lullaby Raine had taught her; one that her mother had, apparently, sung to her when she was younger.
*oOo*
It would get dark in a few minutes and Raine and Yosuke were still flying. They would do the same thing they did last night; sleep on Jiro as he flew. Well in truth Yosuke never did much sleeping, he was too busy keeping an eye on Raine; the love of his life.
Throughout the marriage thus far, Raine had always been quite distanrt and Yosuke never knew why. When they first started dating she was distant as well. He had asked her father about this and he had said that he guessed she hadn't really recovered from her mother's death and wasn't trying to get close to people for fear of getting her heart broken. That was so far off from when he told him it was home sickness.
It made sense but they had been togther so long that she should have been used to him.
“We're almost there.” Raine said.
*oOo*
When it got dark, Rumiko stopped making the rice balls to light a lantern. Kiko and Kaoru had not yet returned but her little sister was with her sixteen year old big brother so she wasn't too worried and decided to give them more time.
Several minutes passed and Rumiko finished the rice balls but Kiko and Kaoru still hadn't returned. What could they be up to? She washed her hands and dried them off. She walked over to the last place she saw Kiko and Kaoru only to be surprised by who she found them embracing.
Raine looked up and smiled. “Konnichiwa Rumiko. I'm finally home.”
