Chapter 29

Her sister had been staying with them for almost three weeks now and already their father was getting better. He no longer slept all day like he used to, but he would stay in bed; he was still too weak to move. Rumiko would visit him three times a day; once to feed him, once to bathe him and once to talk to him. The other two occasions they did talk but that one time it was all they did. Raine visited as well but since she was so big they, meaning Yosuke, Kiko and Kaoru, didn't want her moving around so much.

Rumiko still hadn't forgive Raine for not writing them. Her eldest sister had tried to apologize a million times but still Rumiko refused to speak to her. It had really hurt her and Raine didn't understand that. Well Rumiko thought so.

Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months and Rumiko decided to forget about the letters; he sister was never going ro send them a letter because she thought she was better than them now that she was married to a minor lord. She was too good for them, Raine had no time for them. She had gone to live her new life with her new husband in her new home in her new village, completely forgetting about them. If she as going to forget them then Rumiko could forget her too.

Rumiko, sighed. As hard as she tried, she could not forget her beloved sister Raine. Many, many times Rumiko cried at the thought of her eldest sister betraying her like that. How could she forget her family? Where she came from? Who she was? It all hurt deeply especially since the only time she got to see her sister was because their father had fallen ill.

Well now their father was getting better and soon they wouldn't need her; Raine could go back to her fancy life and forget about them all over again.

Rumiko took up the bowl of soup she had cooling by the window. She stood there a while, looking at the sky with a sadness in her heart that seemed to cut it in half. She didn't want Raine to forget about them, she wanted her big sister to send them a letter every week and visit every month. Alas, that seemed a fantasy. Raine was too occupied with her own life to worry about them. She sighed. It was time for her father to be fed.

*oOo*

Raine sat at her father's side, holding his hand. She was glad to see her father getting well. Glad to know that he wasn't going to die; her heart couldn't take that right now. She smiled down at him and laughed as he told her all the crazy and cute things she did as a baby. He was very happy to be having a grandchild. He was telling her off all her childhood events to prepare her for motherhood.

Her father, Himora, was surprised by how big she had gotten in such a short space of time. He told her that when her mother was four months she was showing but barely. Raine looked like she was just about ready to pop. Raine giggled.

“If only he knew.” She thought.

“You are going to be a terrffic mother.” Himora said.

“I'm going to enjoy being a mother.” Raine added.

Himora became very serious. He heard some very disturbing news from his daughter Rumiko; apparently she and her eldest sister were not speaking and he could understand why Rumiko was upset. Raine hadn't made any contact with them in any way since she left and not only did it hurt Rumiko, but it hurt him as well.

“I heard that you and Rumiko are, to put it nicely, disagreeing.” Himora said.

Raine sighed.

“Well you heard right. I just wish she'd get over it and start speaking to me again.” Raine said.

“You must understand my daughter, that Rumiko loves you like a mother, not a sister. To lose contact with you would be like ebing abandoned.” Himora explained.

Raine held down her head, ashamed.

“Oh. I didn't know she thought of me like that.” She said in a low voice.

“She does and right now she's hurting.” Himora said.

“I have no excuse for abandoning her. Or all of you for that matter Gomen chihiue.” Raine said.

“Don't apologize to me, tell Rumiko.” Himora told his daughter.

“She won't listen to me.” Raine said.

Himora tried to laugh.

“I find persistence works with Rumiko.” Himora said.

The bedroom door slid open and Rumikop walked in holding a bowl. Raine kissed her father and tried to get up but her huge belly got in the way. Rumiko scoffed and put down the bowl to helo up Raine, who left the two together to talk.

Yosuke was outside doing some excercises with his sword. He had hoped getting Raine away from his mother would mean no more tension, but it seemed he was completely wrong. Even at her home Raine was disagreeing with someone.

This was the only way he could escape those tense moments; the only way he could relax.

As he continued his excercises, he saw Raine waddle out of the house and stand there watching him. Her eyes followed him no matter where he went, no matter how complicated the manoeuvre. It seemed like she was mostly trying to keep her mind off of something, more so than her being intertested in his skills as a swordsman, a thought that worried him. What could be so bad that she didn't want to think about it.

He stopped his excercise and walked over to her. As he got closer to her he could see clearly on her face that she was contemplating something. He kissed her forehead and she smiled up at him. He could tell she was pretending to be okay. Something was on her mind, he could see it in her grey eyes.

“What troubles you?” He asked.

“Rumiko.” Raine said softly.

“What about her?” Yosuke asked.

“I raised her, Kiko and Kaoru. All this time I never knew she saw me as her mother and now I feel all the more guilty knowing I practically abandoned her.” Raine said.

“Well when you put it that way it does seem like you abandoned her.” Yosuke said.

“I'll try harder to stay in touch with them. Alot harder.” Raine vowed.

The village miko was on her way to the well to collect water to make her medicines and teas when she felt a powerful youkai aura. She immediately forgot everything.

She followed the aura and the closer she got to it she began to feel a youkai aura. Well now, that was a bit of a problem. She didn't know if she could take on a hanyou and a youkai, but that aside in the end she would purify both their asses to yomi.

The aura of the hanyou led her to the village headman's house and the youkai aura was coming from the forest.

She crept closer. The miko was surprised when she saw a human man speaking to a pregnant human woman but no hanyou and yet the aura was coming from their direction. She fixed an arrow and her bow, preparing to launch it at any hanyou that may try to surprise her. The youkai was still in the forest.

She approached the couple, hoping to get some information out of them. As she got closer the feeling became closer and still she could see no hanyou. She lowered her bow.

“Are there any hanyou nearby?” She asked.

Yosuke shook his head. “Not that I know of.” He said.

The miko became even more confused.

“Funny, I could swear I felt a hanyou aura in this area.” She said.

“Maybe it's in the forest.” Yosuke suggested.

“No it's much closer.” The miko said.

She looked down at Raine, saw she was pregnant and then understood where it was coming from.

Raine looked at her pleadinlgly, begging the miko not to say anything. She put her left hand on her belly; showing the miko her wedding ring.

“Well, I'm not wrong about one thing.” She said and raised her bow and arrow and shot an arrow into the forest.

*oOo*

Thor became alarmed when he saw the miko. He didn't want to leave until he knew that Raine was okay, but he couldn't stay and risk getting caught. The conversation was short and at the end of it and arrow was sent in his direction. He jumped out of the tree, barely missing the arrow and ran a good distance away to ensure he could not be sensed.

*oOo*

The miko ran into the forest looking for the youkai. She had sensed his aura getting weaker and knew he was trying to run away but by the time she got to the forest it was too late; he had disappeared.
