InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Wind Beneath My Wings ❯ Prologue ( Chapter 1 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
“Foolish woman.”
Kagome coughed slightly as the dust and smoke cleared, revealing Naraku once again. Her heart dropped -- she’d been hoping that during that last attack the bastard would finally die. She’d used another one of Kikyo’s arrows, much like the one they’d used in Inuyasha’s father’s grave all those years ago. But in the three years that had past, not only had Kagome herself grown, but her spiritual powers had too. Now she nearly rivaled Kikyo when it came to her miko energy. Kikyo, however, would not be tied with as it was known and still was more powerful than Kagome. No matter how good the girl from the future was, the undead miko was always one step ahead. In this case, Kagome suspected Kikyo knew that the final battle would come and entrusted a whole quiver of her arrows to her reincarnation. She hadn’t left instructions, only the words ‘I’ll help you’ and an emotionless stare, before she turned and walked away, leaving a bewildered Inuyasha and Kagome her wake. Now as Kagome squinted to see more clearly, she cursed her preincarnation under her breath. Where is she?
Little did she know, her hanyou friend was thinking the same thing. After several attempts and nearly an hour of swinging Tetsusaiga around, it became quite obvious. Naraku was immune to every blow, and every attack (like the Windscar) bounced off of his seemingly invincible body. It was clear that Tetsusaiga, for now, was absolutely and completely useless.
He hated that Kagome was a priestess in training. It gnawed at his human heart and his inu-youkai instincts. She was already a big enough target with the jewel, and now she was fending off youkai?? He was afraid that one day he couldn’t save her from something horrible and he’d lose her. He’d never be able to forgive himself. His heart demanded that he shield her from all harm and protect her with his life. His youkai side snarled protectively. Mine! It was true that he loved her, he’d known it for a while now, but there was nothing he could do about it. Not now, not with Naraku still alive. Being his mate would surely be her demise. So for now he remained silent about his true feelings and intentions and pushed them to the back of his mind. His eyes flickered over to her, she looked as worried as he felt. He felt his heart drop. He hated that all he could do was stand beside her and move her out of the way when necessary. Sure he’d yelled a couple of obscene things at Naraku, but it only seemed to irritate him more and make him attack Kagome more frequently. So for once, Inuyasha was silent, save for the occasional curse under his breath. His mind kept drifting to Kikyo, no, not out of love, but out of annoyance. She should be here by now!! Kagome needs help!
Miroku knew that at some point he had to go back to Moushin’s temple in order to have his wind tunnel repaired. While trying his best to fight off the youkai that Naraku had released earlier with his staff and sutras, he’d realized it was futile and opened the wind tunnel. While sucking the offending creature in, the youkai attempted to claw its way out. Miroku finally managed to get everything under control and destroy it, but the bear had done it’s job. Miroku’s wind tunnel had spread considerably and his hand was covered in gashed and tears.
Sango had been gone for about four days. Lucky she hadn’t been around to see her intended get injured, for it would have only added to her worry. Recently, every time they met up with Naraku, he’d been threatening to remove Kohaku’s jewel shard, therefore killing the poor boy. Sango was nearly beside herself with worry and grief, so Kagome suggested she fly back to her village for a while to clear her head. It seemed that Naraku had horrible timing -- for Inuyasha, Kagome, that is Sango had only just landed on Kirara moments before, breathing heavily and bleeding all over. In a rush she explained that Kagura had attacked her on her way back so she immediately suspected Naraku. At that moment, Miroku was holding her carefully, mindful of her wounds and speaking soft, reassuring words to her. Anything to keep the woman he loved from getting hurt again.
“Are you okay, Kagome?”
She felt his hand on her shoulder and she looked up into amber eyes full of concern. Clearing her throat, she nodded and straightened up, worry for him suddenly flooding her heart. “And you?”
He scoffed. “Fine.” His eyes darted back to their nemesis, and it was clear that the conversation was over, for now at least. She gave him a look and he couldn’t help but grin. He knew that later he’d be interrogated and bandaged up against his will.
Naraku laughed, turning both their attentions to him once again. “You think you can destroy me with a single arrow? Think again.”
Kagome’s eyes narrowed and despite that pain that shot through her when she nocked another arrow, aimed straight for Naraku’s heart. “You’re just stalling, Naraku, it ends tonight!”
Naraku simply chuckled. “Kukuku. The only things to end tonight will be your lives.”
“Naraku.”
A cold, yet domineering voice drew everyone’s, even Naraku’s attentions away from the battle to the edge of the forest. A lone figure stood, clad in white and red. Inuyasha suck in his breath. “Kikyo.”
Kagome didn’t move an inch, though her brown eyes flickered over to the undead miko. “Kikyo.” she said loudly enough for her preincarnation to hear across the clearing. “Are you ready?”
For a long moment, it was silent. Then Kikyo’s lips turned upward in a smirk. “Always.”
As if on an unspoken agreement, both arrows went flying at Naraku. His eyes widened. “What??”
Both arrows shone pink, glowing brightly and standing out in the deep darkness of the night. Kagome watched as if in slow motion, the two arrows collided with Naraku’s body and he let out an earth-shattering scream. The ground below them began to shake, and Inuyasha reached out for Kagome, holding her protectively against him and shielding her from the explosion. Miroku had managed to force Sango down behind Kirara and held her trembling form tightly, yet gently, to him, her face buried in the crook of his neck. Please, Kami, let it be over!
Suddenly, it was still. Everything was quiet and the sun began to rise. Almost fearfully, Kagome lifted her eyes, still clutching the front of Inuyasha’s fire rat kimono, and looked up.
Naraku was gone.
Miroku slowly looked up and his eyes met Sango’s. He smiled and she blushed lightly as he lifted his right hand, not to do anything lecherous, but to examine his palm. His eyes filled with tears as he realized… His wind tunnel was gone.
Overcome by joy, he looked back to her again. She blinked and opened her mouth to speak. “Miroku, wh-”
She was cut off as he kissed her, long and lingering. She felt her heart leap and do somersaults within her as she kissed back, then pulled back to rest her forehead against his. “I love you, Sango.” she heard him whisper, and her eyes closed in bliss. “I love you, Miroku.”
Kikyo walked slowly over to where he had once been and leaned over to pick up the nearly- completed jewel. She turned back to the group and slowly, Kagome relinquished her grip on Inuyasha. The undead miko walked slowly over to the pair, eyes on Kagome’s the entire time. Inuyasha, Kagome could feel was tense and she sighed inwardly. Here we go…
Kikyo stopped and grabbed Kagome’s hand. Kagome’s eyes widened slightly in surprise as the woman dropped the jewel into her reincarnation’s palm ands lowly closed the girl’s fingers over it. Softly, a smile adorned her lips.
“There are a few shards left.” she said gently, eyes meeting Kagome’s. Kagome stared at her, shocked. “Take this, protect it well. I do not suspect that we will meet again.”
With that, she turned and walked away. Kagome blinked after her. “Wait! Kikyo!”
The miko stopped but did not turn. “Aren’t you going to…” Kagome swallowed loudly, feeling her pulse pick up a bit. She felt Inuyasha’s grip on her tighten and allowed herself to relax slightly. “Aren’t you going to… stay.. With Inuyasha?”
If the hanyou was tense before, it was nothing compared to how he was now. It was an uncomfortable silence and Kagome felt her cheeks heat and her eyes drift down to the ground. Kikyo remained standing still. Inuyasha’s grip on Kagome only tightened. Finally, his voice broke the silence.
“No. I am staying with the woman I love.”
Kagome’s eyes filled with tears. “Oh. I see.”
Inuyasha looked at her in that moment with such love and adoration that she would’ve fallen over had her eyes not been closed in a desperate attempt to keep the tears at bay. “We’ve decided to go our separate ways.” His eyes flickered to the one he had once loved. “Goodbye, Kikyo.”
She merely nodded her head and continued on her way.
Kagome stared up at him, shocked. “But Inuyasha, I thought-“ she was cut off as Inuyasha pulled her near and shushed her softly. She could feel his warm breath on her face as he looked at her lovingly. “I want to stay here… With you.”
Before she could respond, his lips descended upon hers. Without really thinking, she threw her arms around him and kissed back, not caring that Miroku, Sango, Shippo and Kirara may be watching. For that one moment, they were the only two people in the whole entire world.

Well, not exactly. Next chapter up soon! That was just the prologue. :)
