The Worth of a friend

 

A/N: I know this is a very long gap since the last chapter, but more urgent commitments in my life lately have been taking up all my time. At the moment though I've got time to update with this chapter, and hopefully do it a bit more regularly, though not at the speed as before. I still thank and praise all those readers that have taken the time to read and review my work, and still look forward to any ideas and comments you make. Thank you all for your support, as I say this for all the budding writers out there, that if it weren't for people like yourselves then we wouldn't have the push we needed to finish our work. Arigato!

 

This chappie will be rated T for mild language. Oh, and I don't own Inu!

 

Chapter 13

 

Bright late morning sunlight blared through Hoshiko's bedroom window and directly onto her face, rousing her rudely from the deep contented sleep she had been in mere seconds ago. With a grumbling groan and a few choice curses at the suns bad timing the young woman squinted her eyes as they opened to the world around her, one arm rising from resting on the bed to block out the harsh light, the movement causing the person behind her to awaken too and pull her body more tightly to his.

 

“Mate…” Sesshoumaru half growled half purred as he nibbled her mate mark, his face thankfully spared from the suns harsh rays as his golden orbs opened half way.

 

Smiling Hoshiko turned round in his embrace and sighed when she could see again. Bracing her head up with one arm as the other wrapped behind his back she traced lazy circles on his soft yet thick skin while her eyes skimmed over his face.

 

“Good morning Sess.” Hoshiko murmured then quickly kissed him.

 

GROWL

 

Giggling as her stomach chimed in Hoshiko swiftly rolled away from her mates loose embrace and stood from the bed, her eyes giving his naked form a quick once over before she turned and grabbed her bathrobe out of her closet. Smelling the food being cooked downstairs she looked nervously at the taiyoukai as he reached for his hakama's.

 

What do I tell mama? I know I told her I was seeing someone in the feudal era, but this…will she be ok?

 

Sensing the turmoil she was going through Sesshoumaru embraced her after putting his kimono on, tucking her head under his chin as her purred calmingly for her. “She already knows Hoshiko.” He informed her, remembering smelling the older woman as she stopped outside the girls door to check on them, as well as the happiness that had seeped into her scent as she walked away again.

 

“How…” Hoshiko mumbled, but stopped when her mother called them down for breakfast, the magic `mother knows' radar telling her they were already up and about.

 

With a weary but somewhat relieved sigh the two swiftly left the room, heading down for the meal that awaited them and the rest of the family, or so they thought. Upon entering the kitchen Hoshiko was surprised to see only Inuyasha and Kagome at the table, and their mother busily piling food onto four plates.

 

“Good morning you two!” Mrs Higurashi beamed as she placed the loaded plates upon the table. “I hoped you slept well. You certainly look well rested.”

 

Taking their places Hoshiko had a dumbfounded look on her face and quickly looked at her sister with a `what the hell' look when their mothers back was turned. The two Inu's on the other hand just sat there and apparently ignored the three females. While Inuyasha ravishingly dug into his food his older brother looked down at his own in bewilderment, but seeing and smelling that it was very good by the happy look on the hanyou's face he picked up his own chopsticks and tuck a tentative bite. Eyes widening with apparent pleasure as his taste buds burst with the flavours on his tongue the taiyoukai eagerly ate away, though with more finesse and class than his younger brother did.

 

With a satisfied sigh and a muffled burp, he was in his mates families company after all, Inuyasha leaned back in his chair and rubbed his stuffed belly with one hand while the other held his cup of tea to his lips. Seeing that his pain in the neck brother was actually eating his own breakfast he hid a smile as he drank.

 

Keh, I knew you wouldn't be able to resist Mrs Higurashi's cooking Sesshoumaru.

 

While the two brothers were in their own little worlds the two time travelling sisters were busy telling their mother what they had neglected to tell her the first day they came home.

 

Waving her hand dismissively Mrs Higurashi smiled warmly at the girls before walking away and collecting the dishes. “I already knew Kagome, Hoshiko. All I can say is I'm extremely happy for the both of you, and I can't wait for grandchildren with cute little ears.” The last part she whispered dreamily to herself, but unfortunately for her the two Inu's heard her, the statement jogging their memories and reminding them of what they did the night before.

 

Fuck!

 

Damn!

 

Taking the lead Sesshoumaru swiftly informed the older woman that her secret wish had already come true, and winced as his sensitive ears were bombarded with the shrieks of surprise.

 

“WHAT!”

 

Blinking in stupefied amazement Hoshiko gave her mate a `how do you know' glare, which he replied with a smirk and silently tapped his nose. Giving an un-lady like snort she suddenly found herself in a crushing hug along with her sister, as their mother enveloped them both in her arms happily.

 

“Oh I must be the happiest mother alive!” Mrs Higurashi squealed with joy before kissing the girls on the cheek. Catching the little smirks on the two brothers she quickly composed herself with her `mother knows best' look firmly in place. “I know you two still have one more year of school to finish after the summer break, so if you want to I can have you both home schooled from now on, that way you don't have to keep running back and forth so much.”

 

“That sounds like an excellent idea mama!” Kagome replied before their mother quickly ushered them all from the table.

 

“Good! Now why don't you four go on upstairs and get ready, while I clean up and get your food packs together. Your friends on the other side of the well must miss you already.”

Humming to herself as she packed her bag Hoshiko didn't have to look up to know her mates eyes were watching every little move she made, from walking to her closet to rummaging through her chest of drawers, Sesshoumaru's eyes never left her form. With an aggravated sigh she stopped what she was doing and turned to regard him with one hand still on her bag.

 

“Do you have to do that?” She growled, her brows furrowing more when she saw one of his brows lift in a `what me' look. Sighing again she went back to packing, feigning ignorance.

 

Chuckling silently to himself Sesshoumaru closed his eyes and rested on her bed he was currently sat upon, his ears honed on her movements still as his mind thought over the current dangers and complications he had put his new mate into.

 

With the final battle between us and that vile hanyou drawing near I can not afford for Hoshiko's and our unborn pups life to be put in danger. I know she is not wholly overjoyed with the idea I've whelped her so soon, but I am secretly glad she does not regret it either. I guess now I will have to up her training but take it easy on her as well. What a predicament!

 

Feeling eyes on him Sesshoumaru opened his slowly to see his mate stood before him, a concerned frown marring her pretty features as their eyes locked. “What's the matter Sess?” She asked him as she reached out with one hand to brush a thumb against one cheek. “If it's about the baby then I'm fine with it now. I must admit I was startled and a little mad at you, but now that I've had a chance to think on it I'm looking forward to having it.”

 

Grabbing her hand with his the taiyoukai let a rare smile free as he pulled her to sit between his legs. Wrapping his arms around her he pulled her close and kissed her forehead. “I am pleased that you are pleased mate.” He began with a rumbling purr. “But that is not what is bothering me. Naraku is.”

 

Sighing and nodding her head in understanding Hoshiko ran her hands up and down his thighs in a comforting manor as she mulled over his words.

 

He's worried that if Naraku finds out I'm pregnant then he'll hurt us. Oh my love, you should know I wouldn't let that ever happen.

 

“We will deal with it when the time comes. No amount of planning or preparation can help us when Naraku is concerned.”

 

Smirking into her hair Sesshoumaru tightened his hold around her, and would have continued with something more pleasing if it wasn't for her sister's head as she poked it through the open door.

 

“We're ready when you two are.” Kagome informed them before heading down the stairs.

 

With a sigh the two got up and grabbed their belongings as they went to join the others in the kitchen. Packing up the foodstuffs and anything else they could think of they all headed out to the well house with Mrs Higurashi in tow holding Buyo in her arms. Standing at the top of the steps she smiled and wished them all good luck and a safe journey before watching them one by one jumping into the dark well, Hoshiko and Kagome being the last to go as they both smiled and blew her a kiss goodbye.

 

Inuyasha…Sesshoumaru…keep my daughters safe…and yourself too.

Sat within the dark murky depths of his castle Naraku growled in annoyance as all his scouts kept coming back with a blank as to the whereabouts to the Inu brothers and their packs.

 

Something or someone is hiding their presence from me.

 

Grumbling a few choice words the dark hanyou mulled over his past failed plans of the past week, wondering where he went wrong and what to hatch next.

 

I will not sacrifice any more of my jewel shards to resurrect or enhance any more demons. Ummmm, I think it is time I hatched another being from my flesh I believe.

 

With an evil cackle Naraku made his way down to the inner most depths of his home to meditate and prepare himself for his next scheme.

Camped all together the next night under the trees and stars the three women of the mixed group huddled together on a grassy slope with their backs to the camp behind them as they chatted quietly about random things, until Hoshiko and Kagome got onto the subject of the taijin and the monk's relationship.

 

“So Sango, what have you and Miroku been up to since we left?” Kagome asked innocently with a knowing gleam in her eyes, which was not lost on her sister or the now blushing slayer.

 

“I…I…well…” Sango stammered as she looked at her twisting hands in her lap. Should I tell them? After all, it was only a little kiss.

 

FLASHBACK

 

Humming happily to herself as she busied her hands with polishing Hiraikotsou Sango sighed and looked from her work to little Shippo and Rin playing tag with Kilala, the little fire neko chasing after the children each time she was tagged. Smiling and feeling a funny warmth surge through her chest at the sight she nearly jumped out of her skin when an all too familiar voice startled her out of her happy thoughts.

 

“It is such a lovely change to watch the children play, ne Lady Sango?” Miroku queered, as he stood to the left of her kneeling form under the shadow of a tree, both hands in plain view and clutching his staff as he lent casually against it.

 

Thinking quickly the slayer nodded. “Yes, it is Houshi-sama.” Then went back to furiously polishing her weapon as a deep blush tinted her cheeks.

 

How does he do it, making me feel the way I do? Every time I'm around him I start to feel addle minded and squirmy inside.

 

Chuckling quietly to himself at her apparent nervousness Miroku made a quick gesture to the ground next to her before taking a seat. “Please Sango, how many times do I have to tell you, just call me Miroku.”

 

“I…ok…Miroku. What is it that brought you here?” Sango finally managed to get out, her hand stilling its motions when a warm hand covered it. Oh my!

 

“I haven't been able to stop thinking about you Sango.” Miroku breathed in her ear as his eye caught Kilala's when she looked their way, and with a silent understanding the little fire cat lead the still playing children away.

 

Thank you my friend! I will reward you later for it.

 

Seeing that the woman he secretly loved was left speechless for the moment the monk pressed on. “Since the incident with Hoshiko being taken away and the madness that followed I've realised that I cannot hide my feelings from you any longer. Sango I…” Leaning closer to her Miroku breathed gently and hotly against her open mouth as she stared at him with wide hopeful eyes that tugged painfully at his heart and made his mouth go dry. Gods, doesn't she know what she does to me, just with a mere look? “Lady Sango…I love you…with all my heart and soul. And it would please me greatly if you would be my wife, and bare my children when all this madness is over and done with.” Holding his breath Miroku braced himself for her reply, be it words or a slap to the face.

 

Blinking in shock and gaping like a landed fish Sango's fuzzy mind mulled over his words, the ones that mattered repeating themselves and flashing through her head.

 

He loves me…wants me to be his wife…bare his children…

 

Snapping quickly out of her daze Sango felt a genuine smile split her face as she squealed for joy and threw her arms around the nervous monk, who quickly fell over from the unsuspecting move and onto his back with his love on top of him.

 

“YES! Yes Miroku, I would be most honoured to be your wife and bare as many children as you wish.” Leaning closer to him she whispered the last words against his open mouth. “And I love you too, more than you'll ever know.”

 

Feeling his heart swell with emotion at her words Miroku couldn't stop the joyous tears as they sprung free, and with a barking laugh he wrapped his arms around her and surprised her once more with a loving kiss.

 

END FLASHBACK

 

“Oh Sango…” Kagome breathed with shiny eyes as she embraced her friend after hearing the news. “I'm so happy for you.”

 

Letting out a happy laugh and returning the hug she smiled at Hoshiko who gave her the thumbs up, waiting for her turn to hug the bride to be and congratulate her too.

 

Hugging and laughing the three continued to talk as the others watched them secretly, the two Inu's being privy to what was said with their acute hearing while the monk looked on with `what are they saying' expression on his face.

 

`Bout damn time the monk proposed. Inuyasha thought from his position sitting in a tree, his gaze never leaving his mates form until she returned to camp with the others and stood at the foot of his tree. In a flash the hanyou had leapt down and collected her and returned to his perch, with her sitting comfortingly in his lap, one arm wrapped safely around her back while the other hand rested gently on her stomach.

 

You don't know how happy you've made me fell these past few days Kagome. I only wish and hope that Naraku doesn't kill us all.
