Chapter Four

The moment Ms. Kaede dismissed the class, Kagome made a mad dash for the door; hell-bent on leaving the classroom before she encountered Inuyasha. Ayame struggled to keep up with Kagome when they were in the halls; it didn't seem like Kagome was going to decelerate anytime soon.

“Kagome, wait up!” Ayame screamed out, trying to catch her breath at the moment.

Kagome made no signs of stopping. Apparently, she didn't even hear Ayame screaming her name incessantly; if she did, well, she ignored Ayame completely. After several minutes of scampering halfway through the building, Kagome's adrenaline rush seemed to fade and she came to a complete stop, suddenly short of breath. She slowly checked her surroundings and noticed she was right in front of the student cafeteria.

`I might as well get something to eat. I'm famished.'

When she pushed open the doors to the cafeteria, an assortment of aromas assaulted her nose, and her mouth watered instantly. Fast food restaurants were scattered around the dining area. This place had all types of food: everything ranging from traditional Japanese sushi and oden to various kinds of Western food, inclusive of hamburgers and pizza. While she was marveling at all the delectable food, Ayame finally caught up with Kagome.

“What's wrong with you?! I chased you halfway through the damn building, screaming and shouting your name along the way, and you still had the nerve to keep running!” Ayame shouted, undoubtedly pissed off and clearly exhausted.

“Sorry,” Kagome mumbled apologetically.

“Sorry doesn't cut it, girl,” Ayame retorted. “If you're going to act like this every time you see Inuyasha, then we've got a problem.”

“Can we talk about this after we get some food?” Kagome said, her mind not fully functional due to her growing need to chow down on some scrumptious Japanese cuisine.

Inuyasha watched as Kagome zipped out the door.

“Looks like someone has the hots for you, Yash,” Sango said, a hint of humor evident in her voice.

“Feh. I don't even know the girl.” Inuyasha replied.

“Maybe not, but you sure like staring at women you don't know.”

“I was not staring!”

“Keep telling yourself that. Anyway, I'm starved, let's go eat!”

Inuyasha and Sango made their way to the student cafeteria in a slightly more civilized manner.

“Hm, so many things to eat, what are you getting, Yash?” Sango asked. However, she didn't get a reply.

“Yash?”

Inuyasha was nowhere in sight. Sango glanced around the spacious cafeteria, and upon closer scrutiny, she found that Inuyasha had made his way to the far end of the student cafeteria. Apparently, there was restaurant the served Ramen noodles.

“Damn Inuyasha and his obsession with Ramen.”

***********

“So, Kagome, when are you going to ask him out?” Ayame blatantly asked.

“What? Why would I want to do that?” Kagome countered.

“Well, that's a stupid question. You like him, right?”

“Of course not! What makes you think that?”

“Hm, let me see. Oh right. For starters, you stared at him for the better part of last night. You ogled him today in class, not to mention you got caught doing so. And you've haven't been acting like yourself when he's around! Don't dare tell me you don't like him!”

“Well, I don't. I mean, he's attractive, I'll give him that, but I really don't like him. And besides, even if I did, you know how I feel about men.”

“Kagome, you haven't dated since you broke up with Kouga, and that was almost a year ago!”

That put things in perspective. It really was almost a year since she broke up with Kouga. After that short-lived relationship, she had resolved not to date anymore. Kouga had coaxed her into going out with him almost immediately after she broke up with Hojo, her first boyfriend. Kouga had seemed quite the gentleman at first. He did all the little things that mattered: opening a door for her, minding his manners, and being sweet to her on a regular basis. Not to mention he was a very passionate man, but sometimes, he was too passionate. The problem was, Kouga never seemed to understand when he had crossed the line.

Kagome was thoroughly enjoying her second date with Kouga. He had taken her to a nice little place for dinner, not too fancy yet not too shabby. After dinner, they went to see a movie, not that she paid attention to much of it anyway; she was too busy making out with Kouga in the back row of the theater. Truth be told, Kagome reveled in the all the attention Kouga showered on her. Kouga even walked her home that night even though he lived on the other side of Tokyo.

“Can I come in?” Kouga asked, his voiced laced with hope.

“Sure, why not? My family shouldn't be home for a while,” Kagome explained.

It was a decision Kagome would soon regret, but had it not happened, she would have never known Kouga's true intentions.

“Do you want anything?” Kagome offered.

“You,” was his simple answer.

“I mean something to drink, silly,” Kagome clarified, thinking he had misunderstood her.

“I'm good. Come here, baby.”

Kouga reached for Kagome's arm and pulled her down with him onto the plush sofa and proceeded to kiss her. Kagome willingly kissed him back, eager to have another make-out session. However, Kouga had other ideas in mind. His hands traveled down to the hem of her blouse, determined to rid her of the article of clothing. That was when it registered to Kagome what he wanted to do.

“No, stop,” Kagome pleaded.

“Why? Don't you want me, baby?” Kouga whispered.

“I do, it's just…it's too soon. We've only been going out for what, two weeks?”

“It doesn't matter. If you want me, I don't see why we should stop.”

With that said, Kouga roughly grabbed her left breast. He climbed on top of her so that the weight of his body prevented her from escaping. He attempted to remove her blouse again, but Kagome was using all of her might to try and push him off her, all to no avail. Fortunately, she remembered her mother had given her a taser for precautionary measures. The problem was, her purse was just out of reach. Once again, she mustered up all her strength, and this time, successfully shoved him off of her. She reached for the taser just as Kouga grabbed her from behind. She pressed the taser against his leg and pushed the button, sending numerous jolts of electricity racing through his body. Kouga hollered and screamed until he couldn't take it anymore and fainted. Kagome took a moment to calm herself down after the frightening ordeal, appalled at what just transpired. She then strenuously dragged Kouga's unconscious body out her front door and left him there for lack of a better idea.

Needless to say, when Kouga regained consciousness, he was livid.

“Kagome! Open this fucking door right now!”

“What the fuck were you thinking?”

He went on in much the same manner for approximately ten minutes, shouting every obscenity known to man. On the other side of the door, however, Kagome's eyes were brimming with tears.

`How could he?' she thought. `That bastard.'

Everyday after that fateful night, Kouga apologized so many times that Kagome lost count. It didn't matter what he said or did to try and woo her back to him; at that point, she realized that Kouga only wanted one thing from her: sex. How could she have been so blind? She had heard rumors about him, but refused to believe them because of her trusting personality. So much for that.

That had gotten her thinking; why hadn't she stayed with Hojo? He was nice, honest, and cute, and he didn't seem like he had any underlying motives the whole six months they had been dating. Hell, he most certainly wasn't after her for sex. He barely even touched her; in fact, the most intimate action her had ever done was a kiss on her cheek. Then it occurred to her. Hojo was mundane. Sure, he was nice and all, but she didn't want a nice boy who couldn't tend to her needs. She really didn't see a future with him. It was all quite ironic really. Hojo didn't suit her tastes because he couldn't satisfy her desires, yet, she despised Kouga for trying to sleep with her when they barely knew each other. Maybe Kagome just had bad luck with men, but after those two disastrous relationships, Kagome was ready to call it quits.

Seeing Inuyasha, however, had made her reevaluate her decision. He was, by far, the most attractive man she'd ever seen, but that in itself posed a problem. What if he was like Kouga? What if he was nothing more than another womanizer? Kagome wasn't sure she could stomach the idea of being used. Inuyasha's handsome, masculine features were bound to attract many other women as well. If they were dating, would he leave her to be with another woman? Kagome wasn't sure she wanted to find out.

“So, are you going to ask him out?” Ayame asked again.

“No.”
