Chapter Six

Fully satisfied after eating three bowls of Ramen, Inuyasha headed to class with Sango. He had to admit that college life was infinitely better than high school life. His schedule was quite flexible; he only had three classes a day, three times a week: on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

“Where are you headed?” Inuyasha asked Sango.

“I have Art History now,” she replied. “How about you?”

“Humanities,” he said grudgingly, wondering what drove him to register for such a dull course.

“Oh, then I'll see you later. We have Calculus together right?”

“I sure hope so.”

Inuyasha and Sango went their separate ways. As Inuyasha took a seat in his classroom, his eyes scanned the room, hoping against all hope that Kagome was in this class. Inuyasha hadn't stopped pondering about her ever since Psychology class, and he was quite sure he was going nuts for this girl. In any case, he couldn't spot her amongst the students in the classroom, and his hopeful mood consequently deteriorated.

While he was lost in his thoughts, a woman took a seat directly next to his, to his right. Looking up, he realized it was Kagome's friend. He hadn't given her much notice the times he was preoccupied with staring at Kagome, but seeing her in person made him conscious of how pretty she really was. Her hair was naturally a striking shade of red, and most of it was tied in pigtails with the exception of a few bangs covering her forehead. Her eyes were hazel, an unusual pigment but most certainly not unappealing. Her figure had nice, womanly curves, and to top it all off, her long legs seemed smooth to the touch. If Inuyasha hadn't been so captivated by Kagome, he might have spared her a second glance.

“Hi! I'm Ayame,” she said, introducing herself enthusiastically.

“Inuyasha,” he replied.

When Ayame entered the classroom, she immediately spotted Inuyasha sitting in the back row because of his eye-catching silver hair. She was visibly elated; this was her chance to try and get Inuyasha and Kagome hooked up. Ayame thus decided to take the seat adjacent to his. When she took a closer look at Inuyasha, she had to admit he was too attractive for his own good. Hell, had Kagome not been enamored with him, she might have gone after him herself.

On the other side of the hall, Sango and Kagome were happily chatting away. When Sango had realized Kagome was in her Art History class, she was determined to seize the opportunity to be better acquainted with the woman that Inuyasha was head over heels for. Sango understood why Inuyasha was so enthralled by this woman; her beauty was absolutely breathtaking. Better yet, she seemed very refined and nice all around. She truly hoped Inuyasha and Kagome would get together soon. Inuyasha deserved to be happy, and maybe Kagome would be the woman to finally break down his internal barriers.

“So, you have a thing for Inuyasha Takahashi, don't you?” Sango blatantly inquired, not wanting to waste any more time on pointless jabber.

Kagome was totally caught off guard; she wasn't expecting Inuyasha to be a subject of their conversation.

“Who?” she asked, trying to feign ignorance.

“You know who I'm talking about,” Sango pressed, nudging her on the arm while giving her a knowing smirk. “The guy you were supposedly `ogling' in Psychology class.”

`Damn it,” Kagome thought. `She's not going to drop this, is she?'

“I wasn't ogling him.”

“Ms. Kaede would beg to differ,” Sango laughed. “Come on Kagome, do you like him or not?”

Kagome was unsure of how to answer such a direct question. Should she tell her the truth, or should she try to deny it? The latter of the two options didn't fool anyone, especially Sango seeing as how she already saw her staring at Inuyasha. But Kagome was afraid of what Sango might do if she found out that Kagome was indeed fond of Inuyasha. Would she tell him?

“Well?” Sango asked, growing impatient when she hadn't said anything.

“Um…”

Their professor chose that moment to enter the classroom, indicating class was now in session. Kagome sighed in relief, thanking Kami for saving her from answering that compromising question. She could only hope that Sango wouldn't ask her that question again because she honestly wasn't sure what she would say. Sure, she liked Inuyasha well enough, but she still hadn't discerned how much she liked him. Was it just an infatuation, or was it something more? In any case, she didn't want to ponder about it too much at the moment. She didn't want to get caught not paying attention twice in one day.

When class was dismissed, Inuyasha and Ayame strolled out of their classroom as at a leisurely pace, chitchatting about random subjects. Ayame was quite pleased with herself; from the short time she had spent with Inuyasha, she had gotten to know him a lot more than she had originally intended. He wasn't very verbose, per say, but he was definitely a fantastic listener.

“What class do you have next?” Ayame asked.

“Calculus,” Inuyasha answered.

“Oh, me too!”

Across the hall, Inuyasha caught sight of Sango and Kagome walking together in his direction.

`Damn, what is Sango up to?' he thought.

***********

Well, if Inuyasha had been disappointed that Kagome wasn't in his Humanities class, this certainly made up for it. Kagome was in his Calculus class; better yet, Sango and his newfound friend, Ayame, were also in his Calculus class. However, despite the amiable company, Inuyasha still had yet to say anything. Kagome was sitting right in front of him, and although he couldn't see her face, her smell had him entranced.

“Kami, she smells heavenly,' Inuyasha thought. `Like strawberries and vanilla.'

His thoughts were cut short when Sango tried to get his attention.

“Inuyasha, this is Higurashi Kagome,” Sango said, gesturing to the said girl and formally introducing her. “And Kagome, this is Takahashi Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha could have sworn his heart skipped a beat when she turned around to face him directly. She looked at him with such warmth in her eyes, something he had never experienced before when he was with Kikyo. He noticed her cheeks were turning a shade of red, and he felt his own cheeks begin to flare up as well when she shyly whispered a greeting to him.

“Hi, Inuyasha, it's nice to meet you,” she bashfully murmured, her eyes still focused on his own.

`I love the way she says my name,' Inuyasha thought.

“Um, it's nice to meet you, too,” he replied for lack of a better response.

Sensing the discomfort Inuyasha was currently experiencing, Sango decided to interject.

“So, now that we're all formally acquainted, how about we do something together tomorrow?”

Catching on to Sango's drift, Ayame quickly agreed.

“That's a great idea!” Ayame said.

“Kagome, you're free tomorrow, right?” Sango asked.

“Um…” Kagome wasn't sure what to say. Truth be told, she really didn't have plans for the tomorrow, but then again, that would mean she'd have to see Inuyasha, and she wasn't sure how ready she was to spend time with him so soon.

“Great, then it's settled!” Sango said excitedly, not giving Kagome a chance to finish her thought.

Kagome didn't know if she should be thrilled or horrified at the sudden turn of events. Thrilled because she'd get to spend time with Inuyasha, and every second she was near him, she felt warm all over. Horrified because things were moving way too fast; hell, Kagome had only seen him for the first time less than twenty-four hours ago. But the more she thought about it, the more she felt excited. She'd never felt so strongly for any man in such a short period of time, so she figured she might as well trust her feelings for once instead of listening to the voice of reason that was urging her to sever all emotions she had for Inuyasha.

Similar thoughts ran through Inuyasha's mind, but he too, felt more excited than apprehensive. This was his chance to get better acquainted with Kagome. Perhaps, if things went well, he could ask her out on a formal date. Everything about Kagome appealed to Inuyasha. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't find a single flaw in her: she was simply flawless. It had occurred to Inuyasha that he was idolizing her, similar to the way he had idolized Kikyo, but his intuition told him that this time, things were different - she was different.

Inuyasha chanced another glance at Kagome and found her timidly looking at him as well, smiling cheerfully. He didn't know what had caused her to smile, but seeing her happy induced him to smile back at her. Their little moment was shortened when their final class of the day began. However, neither Inuyasha nor Kagome was really focused on the uninteresting mathematical equations that were on the board; their thoughts were centered on each other.

Tomorrow suddenly seemed a whole lot brighter.
