Cracking his eyes open, Inuyasha tried to blink the metallic-smelling wetness away; unable to move, he vaguely recognizing the tail lights of their car. He remembered the bar; he remembered Kagome, looking gorgeous in that fluttery, salmon top… He remembered asking her if she wanted a drink, and she gave him that sly smile, asking simply for water.
That was when it clicked. He'd leaned forward, resting his nose in the crook of her neck, and inhaled deeply.
There it was… There was that sweet scent of pregnancy.
She was pupped.
He remembered hurrying off to the bar to grab her bottled water. He remembered constantly asking her if she was tired, if her feet hurt, if she needed more water…
He would do absolutely anything for his pup and its mother.
He remembered them leaving the club together, hand in hand. He remembered pushing her up against the blue Ford Focus, capturing her lush lips with his own. He remembered running his rough tongue against her own, wetting her swollen lips. He remembered the hazy, lusty look in her eyes; he remembered her climbing carefully into the driver's seat, probably more for his sake than for hers. He remembered hopping quickly into the passenger's seat, taking her hand as the car roared to life. He remembered watching her as they pulled out into the street, glowing with fatherly pride as they disappeared into the dark.
Now, as Inuyasha lay there, on the side of the road, he listened closely while the cops inspected the flipped remains of their car. The paramedic's words rang loudly in his ears until they became a roaring:
“This one's gone already.”
He pressed his face into the gravel and let out a low, pained whimper, letting himself slip into the darkness, never regaining consciousness.
