Through Thick and Thin
Chapter One: Tokyo
“Are we there yet?” The ebony-haired teen asked for the tenth time in five minutes. She leaned her head down on the glass window and watched as the large buildings flew by as they passed.Chapter One: Tokyo
Mr. Kobayashi adjusted the rear view mirror. “We’re almost there, Kagome.” He said. He was getting quite annoyed of her asking the same question over and over again.
“You know Kagome, we’re pretty sure you’re going to like it here. The people here are nice, and respectful. Plus, they have a fine school here. Taro, was is it called again?” Mrs. Kobayashi/Kohana looked over towards her husband.
“I believe its called Shikon High.” Taro answered, still keeping his eyes on the road.
“Ah, that’s it.” Kohana said.
“Whatever you say.” Kagome let out a heavy sigh and sank down into her seat.
She reached over and grabbed the magazine from the floor and swung it open. It was a Time magazine. She flipped through the pages and wasn’t even interested. She through it down and looked back out of the window. There was a group of people walking by but she ignored them.
The car stopped in front of a rather big house. It wasn’t even close to a mansion at all, but it was nice. Mr. Kobayashi drove up and parked in the garage.
Kagome reached over and grabbed a hold of her suitcases. She groaned as she tried holding two with one hand and open the door with the other. Finally, she got out of the car and made her away across the neatly cut lawn towards the front door. Kohana unlocked the door and allowed them all in.
“Nice place.” Kagome said, and dropped her suitcases next to the black leather sofa. Kohana came up behind her, and placed her hands on her shoulders.
“Come on. Let me show you your room.” She said softly. Kohana was actually a really nice woman. She was also beautiful. She has brownish auburn hair that flowed down just below her shoulders, and beautiful brown eyes that glistened in the light.
Kagome nodded and took a hold of her suitcases. Kohana led her upstairs and down the hall towards a room that stood alone. “This is it.” She stated and opened the wooden door to reveal a large room. Her and Kagome stepped in, and Kagome gentle put down her luggage and examined her new room.
“Wow.” Was all she was able to say as she wandered around. The walls were painted a nice shade of midnight blue, and a white border framed it. What surprised Kagome was that there was a balcony. She always wanted one. Now, she was able to just stand out side and enjoy the view of the wonderful blue sky during the day, the sparkling stars during the night, and the nice, crisp, clean air. She had a normal bed like anyone does, but it was a queen size. Her bed was covered with a blue comforter, white sheets and multiple throw pillows of various shades of blue and shapes. A large dresser was placed next to her bed, where she could fit all of her clothes. For all of her delicate and nice clothes, there was a huge closet on the opposite side.
Kagome strolled over towards her bed and plopped down on it. It was so comfortable. It felt like she was lying on a cloud. "Wow, this is so comfortable!" Kagome exclaimed in bliss.
Kohana couldn't help but smile at the once trouble child happy. "I'll leave you to unpack." She whispered and exited the room.
"Okay." The teen sighed and stood from her bed. She knelt down and snapped open her suitcase. She pulled out her clothes and placed them on her bed. Kagome didn't have a lot of clothes with her. They weren't the nicest clothes either, but she did have some and that's all that mattered to right now. After her family died, she didn't have a lot of time to gather all of her clothes and prized possessions.
But there was one thing Kagome was able to take with her. It was her most valuable possession. Well, it was valuable to her. It was a picture of her entire family. Her father, who just died 2 years ago was in it, he stood tall and proud. Her mother, who was always there for her stood next to her father, with a big toothy smile on her face. Her grandpa stood between her parents, scowling like he always did. But that's why she loved him dearly. Her younger brother stood next to her grandpa, and she stood on the opposite side. Her family who she loved so much. Her mother who would do anything for her. Her grandfather who just tried to help out a little bit, even though he was a pain in the neck. But Kagome knew he only cared about her. Her brother who she loved dearly, even though they argued a lot. Her younger brother who looked up to her a role model ever since their father died. She loved them all of them so much. And she said she hated them. On the night of the accident.
Kagome wiped a single tear away as it slid down her right cheek as she thought of what happened just months ago.
"But why!" Kagome whined uncontrollably.
"Kagome, will you control yourself?” Mrs. Higurashi asked in annoyance.
“No, you actually expect me to take this calmly?! I mean seriously!” The ebony-haired teen bellowed.
“Kagome. You have to take this like an adult.” Gramps chirped in.
“But I’m not an adult! I’m only 16!” Kagome cried and plopped down on the sofa. Folding her arms over her chest, Kagome pouted.
“Listen. We know this is hard but you have to understand that-” Mrs. Higurashi was interrupted by Kagome.
“Understand what? That you want the best for me. That you love me so much!” She said in a mocking tone. “Well, if you loved me so much, then you wouldn’t be shipping me off to an all girls’ boarding school!”
“We do love and want the best for you. And once you come back when you’re eighteen, you shall be wed.” Gramps added in.
“WHAT!” Kagome yelled, her face going a crimson red in frustration. This was just too much for a girl to handle in one day.
“You heard me. You are to be wed on you’re eighteenth birthday.” Gramps stated.
“I’m not marrying someone I don’t know! You guys gotta be kidding me!”
"Kagome, you are going to be wed. And we are going to choose you a husband. This discussion is over." Mrs. Higurashi said firmly.
"NO!" She bellowed. "I'm not going to some stupid all girls’ boarding school and I'm not going to marry some freak I don't know!” She ran towards the door.
"Kagome!" Mrs. Higurashi called.
"Ugh.. leave me alone. I hate you all!" She screamed and ran out.
“I can’t believe I said that to them. I didn’t mean it!” She cried out aimlessly. Tears now stung her eyes and streamed down her face freely. “I wish I never ran away. They would have never gone out and looked for me. They all wouldn’t have died.” She brought up her hand and wiped away the salty tears. It was useless though; more tears began to fall.
Kagome ran towards the park. At this time it was usually deserted, and all she wanted to do was sit at the swing set and think. That’s where she usually went when she wanted to be alone. Her family besides Souta didn’t know exactly where it was, so she was safe.
“I can’t believe they were just going to that.” Kagome said out loud to the lonely wind. She looked up and saw leaves dancing around in the wind. They flew by her and one got caught on her blue wool sweater. She lifted it with her index finger and thumb. It twirled around between her grasp trying to break free into the wind. She finally let it free and watched as it swerved around and disappeared into the pile of leaves.
“Hmm.. maybe I shouldn’t have run out. But, they shouldn’t have just did that. All of that news at once.” Kagome sighed. “I should go back and apologize.” She stood from the swing and quickly stretched.
Police cars zoomed by her. There were like 3 of them. Sirens on. ‘What’s going on?’ She thought to herself, in utter confusion. She decided to just ignore them and head home. She hummed her favorite song of all time, Ai no Uta.
She barely made it home when the rest of the street that lead towards the shrine was blocked. ‘What the...’ She continued walking and squeezed through a crowd of people to see what was going on.
Three ambulances just arrived. People stared at the scene in awe, and Kagome still had no idea what was going on.
“Isn’t that the Higurashi car?” A person said out loud.
“Yea, I’m pretty sure it is.” Another one answered.
Kagome overheard this. “What!” She pushed through, not caring what she was doing until she met a crashed car. They were right. It was her family’s vehicle.
“No..” She said sadly. Taking her eyes off of the car slowly, she looked up. She saw her mother. She gasped and covered her mouth with her hands as though locusts were to fly in. Salty tears stung her eyes. “Oh my god.” Her mother was hurt badly. She had cuts and bruises all over her. There was a deep gash above her eyebrow, blood spilling all over her once beautiful face. Her brother lying next to her, he was just as bad as she was. Gramps was the worst of all. It looked like he broke his neck and arm. They all had cuts and bruises scattered about on their bodies.
“Oh god.” She fainted.
More tears fell freely down Kagome’s rosy face. She desperately tried to wipe them away.
Kagome woke up a few hours after the incident. She fluttered her eyes open to find that she wasn’t in her room. She was in the hospital lying in a hospital bed. A nurse just casually walked past the door and Kagome called out to her.
The nurse acknowledged her and walked into the room. “Yes?” She asked politely.
“What am I doing here?” Kagome asked.
The nurse nodded her head. “That’s right. You’re Kagome Higurashi. You’re the one who fainted.”
Kagome took a moment to absorb it all in. Then she remembered. She did faint. But why? Why did Kagome faint? Images of her mother and the crashed car fluttered through her mind.
Tears stung her eyes once more. “Where is my mother?!” She shouted. “I want to see my mom!”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t let you see her.” The nurse said softly and apologetically.
Kagome shook her head no. “I have to see her.” She swung her legs around over the bed and jumped off. “I have to.” She ignored the nurse as she ran out of the room and into the hallway.
She ran aimlessly, hoping to somehow find her mother’s room. But then she did. It was room 103. She ran over to it and stared out of the small window. Her mother had an air mask over her mouth. She was barely breathing and her heart was barely beating.
Kagome slowly turned the knob and opened the door. Closing it behind her, Kagome stared at her mother in awe. She slowly walked over to her and knelt down next to her mom’s bed. She grabbed a hold of her mother’s hand and squeezed it lightly.
“Mom.. I’m so s-sorry.” Kagome apologized softly. “I-I shouldn’t h-have said that. I had n-no right. Now I understand t-that you really do want the best for me and that you lo...” She was interrupted by a sound of a loud tone.
Kagome slowly let go of her mom’s hand and looked up at the heart monitor. There was three lines, showing that her mother’s heart had a just stopped beating.
“Mom!” Kagome cried. “No, don’t die!. You can’t die! I still need you!” She looked around for any nurses when she spotted two other beds. She was surprised to find them not empty.
It was her grandfather and younger brother. “Souta!” She cried and ran over towards him. Only to find that he had died a while ago. “No..” She sobbed uncontrollably. She looked over at her grandfather. He too was long dead.
Kagome fell to her knees and continued to sob, when that same nurse from before came running in.
“Kagome!” She ran over to her and comforted her.
“Why!? Why did they all have to die!? Why did I have to go and say I hate them!? Why... Why didn’t I just stay home?” Her loud cries turned into soft whimpers. She cried on the nurse’s shoulder.
“It’s all my fault.”
Kagome wiped away the tears from her face and calmed down. She continued to unpack slowly.
A/N:
Okay. I’m going to stop here. Sorry if it’s kind of short. I only wanted to start it off with Kagome moving to Tokyo. I also wanted to add in exactly what happened to her family. I hope you all enjoyed. Now, click that cute liddle purple button and leave me a bunch of reviews. Good reviews. I would appreciate if I don’t receive any flames, but if you must flame me, go ahead. Just know that I don’t take flames very well. I will hunt you down and make you pay... (joke) The next chapter will be coming in about a week.
