Chapter Three

"Happy Birthday Aiko!"

Exciting cries of little kids cheerfully greet the now seven year old girl. A man, in a funny hat that's identical to a yellow chicken, is standing in front of the kids.

"Now look under you chairs and if you find a piece of paper, you will win a prize!" He announces on a microphone.

The children are now eagerly standing to look below their chairs, and they all find a piece of paper taped on the seat. They rush to the man with the weird hat to gladly accept their award.

Behind the commotion, Inuyasha is sitting down at a table with friends. He's watching his birthday girl with a content smile on his face. Inuyasha is satisfied all the hard work on planning and the money spent was worth seeing his daughter's delightfulness.

He rented a local site which they were known for holding popular birthday parties. The spacious room was decorated with green plants, vines, and trees hugging the walls. White petite light bulbs coated the plants giving it ornamentation. Closely, there are mechanical waterfalls hidden by the plants and trees. Beside the kids, Aiko's name was spelled out with baby blue and pink balloons that are nearly as tall as him. In support of the jungle theme, all the kids were asked to disguise or dress themselves as an animal or a mythical figure. Even if the kids came unprepared, they were provided to have their faces painted as animals for free. With the kids dressed up, Aiko is cloaked as a pink and purple fairy, with wings and a wand for the final touch. Inuyasha looks on as the kids applaud for the magician who appears on stage.

"Your surprise gift for Aiko is already in your car." Inuyasha revolves around to see Kikyou come back from the duty he assigned her.

"Ok, thank you." Inuyasha had no choice, but to keep his present for Aiko at Kikyou's place. He knew if he kept it around the house Aiko would go rummage around searching for it.

Kikyou takes the empty seat next to him and introduces herself to the two guys who were seated with him. They were fathers of two kids who were invited to the party, Taro and Rinji.

After getting acquainted with Kikyou, Taro asked him, "Inuyasha, don't forget to introduce us to your father, okay?"

Inuyasha knew that was the reason both were sitting with him right now instead with their kids. He didn't turn them down when they asked, for he didn't care, but what really agitated him is they talk about his father as if he was some kind of celebrity. They didn't know the man as Inuyasha knew while growing up miserable. So he regretfully agreed to their request.

"I read the transcript of his case against *Tokyo Medical Center." Rinji pronounces smugly.

Inuyasha nods uncaring and Taro remarks, "Yeah, I know that one. That was a benchmark case in 1987."

Irritated, Inuyasha turns away to the celebration. He hears Kikyou reply sarcastically and can almost feel her raise her eyebrow at the men, "Wow! Look at you two, you really studied, eh?"

Inuyasha grins at her assertion while looking ahead to watch the magician. The magician shows his audience what appears to be a plain square of silk cloth. He also shows the audience his hand. It is empty. Then he places the cloth over his hand.

"Say the magic word!" The magician yells out.

"Happy Birthday Aiko!" The kids exclaim.

The magician whisks the cloth away, and he is holding a white rabbit. The children applaud in return.

Inuyasha turns away from the show to take a drink from his beverage.

"Inuyasha, where is your mother?"

He recognizes the voice of his father. He places his drink on the table and stands up to confront his dad. "I don't know. I haven't seen her. She might be in the kitchen."

Inutashio nods. Inuyasha remembers who he has to introduce.

"Dad, this is Taro, Rinji, and you know Kikyou right?" He points to each person.

Taro and Rinji stand up to shake Inutashio's hand.

"Hi, how are you?" Inutashio shakes Taro's hand, "Nice to meet you."

He shakes Rinji's hand and greets him, "Nice to meet you."

The men sit down smugly and Kikyou stands up to greet his father.

"Nice to see you again, Mr. Takeda." She gives him a peek on the cheek and takes a seat.

Inutashio faces Inuyasha, who remains standing.

"Ahh…I won't stay here for long. I have to go."

Inuyasha sighs disapprovingly at his father, "Dad, the party has just begun. Aiko will look for you."

"I have a very important appointment."

In the entrance to the birthday party, two trees are walking in, very slowly. Kagome, ahead of Sango, walks with much caution while using her 'limbs' to hold onto her very large and torrential rubber trunk on her head. Ugh! This rubber suit is getting very hot now! Her face is painted light brown to match the tree she was. With the heat, she hopes the make-up wouldn't come off till the ridiculous job is over. She was in a rubber tree suit with her arms as limbs and branches and her feet as roots. Her head is covered with a long hat that are branches with leaves going high for about another 20 inches, which made it grueling for her to grasp onto the hat.

Behind her, she sees Sango also walking carefully to not lose balance. Sango is in a similar suit, but with a lighter color of brown. She turns ahead to resume walking when she sees a cute little girl dressed as a fairy in front of her. The little girl is calling for her daddy. Kagome watches beaming with a sparkle in her eyes. She feels someone run into her, but knows its Sango. She looks on at the adorable girl, to see a good-looking man with striking silver hair in a low tress, approach the girl. The handsome man kneels in front of the girl and says, "Yes, Aiko?" Maybe that's her dad. Kagome concludes.

The girl, Aiko, answers, "Daddy, I want to open my gifts now."

"Ok, but after the party, ok?" The father replies.

Kagome sighs dreamingly. She turns to Sango. "Come here. Do you see him?"

"Where?" Sango looks for what gotten Kagome to halt. And for her to almost losing balance while walking into Kagome.

Kagome points out to the father and daughter display.

"What's my surprise, Daddy?" The girl probes her dad.

The father chuckles, "It won't be a surprise if I tell you."

Sango looks at Kagome who is smiling blissfully.

"I wish to have a cute husband like him." Kagome says with stars in her eyes and if her hands weren't covered, Sango could picture Kagome folding them under her chin.

"But I want to know now, Daddy." Aiko begs her father.

The dad smiles, "Ok Aiko. Watch the magic show first and then I'll tell you my surprise."

Kagome chuckles and jabs Sango's trunk, "His smile makes me hungry. Come on let's go the kitchen and look for oden."

Meanwhile, Aiko hugs her daddy, "I love you, Daddy. I'll go back to the show, bye."

Kagome is still watching gleefully as Sango laughs.

"Ok, Come on. We're needed already." Sango says and walks ahead, but one of her branches hits Kagome. Kagome loses her balance and falls down head first, "Itai!"

Inuyasha is watching Aiko walk back when he hears someone behind. He glances back to see a 'tree' on the ground. He swiftly goes over to help the person in the suit, "Oi!"

He speeds over to the tree and helps the person to their feet. He notices the 'tree' is a woman with smudge brown make-up on. He takes her 'limbs' and assist her, "Just be careful."

Kagome sees she is aided by the cute daddy she was just spying on. She replies nothing to him.

"Are you okay?" The father questions.

Kagome bobs her head at a snail's pace.

"Take care then." The father walks away and Kagome walks to the stage dazed.

Finally on track, Kagome reaches the stage with Sango. She sees a man with a weird chicken hat broadcast on a microphone, "Kids…lets' welcome our next guests…Twinky and Trunky!"

Kagome and Sango walk onto the stage. Wonder which am I? Kagome plasters a fake smile to the clapping kids. When the music starts, Sango and Kagome move their limbs and branches as they rehearsed the other nights before. They were to be dancing trees and Kagome didn't know if this is the most terrible job she ever had. I guess it isn't too bad. I don't have to hear people yelling in my face. She glances at Sango to see her happily smile. Wonder if it's fake, can't tell. Kagome places her false smile and looks at the kids that are now standing up. They are following Twinky and Trunky's steps. She notices the same girl she was spying on earlier in the front.

Aiko is following the dancing trees when she notices one tree's face. She stops dancing. She stares at the woman's face. It looks familiar...

After the show, Kagome are near the exit where she fell. They are sitting on a bench and start to remove their costume. Kagome takes off her rubber trunk on top of her head. Sango and Kagome both have clothing underneath the suit.

"I don't know if I should regret having you as a friend." Kagome reveals her arms from the branches. "Of all the jobs you can give, you gave me this one. I mean, where else can you see dancing trees?"

Sango takes out some baby wipes. She starts to wash out the paint on her face, "Here!"

Kagome is also removing the make-up on her forehead when she hears a young girl's voice.

"Mommy."

Kagome looks up to see the girl dressed as a fairy in front of her, "Mommy?"

The girls face lights up at the sound of her voice, "You came back Mommy! Daddy...Daddy!" Aiko calls for her father.

Kagome sees the handsome father appear at the girl's side.

"Yes, Aiko?" The father asks.

"Daddy, Thank you so much!"

"For what?"

"I already know your surprise-Mommy!"

Aiko hugs her Daddy and says, "I love you Daddy!" Inuyasha hugs back, puzzled.

Aiko turns away from her dad. She jumps at Kagome to give her a hug, "I love you Mommy."

Inuyasha looks up to see the woman's face. He looks on with a gaping face.

From behind, Kioko comes over with a plate in her hands. "Inuyasha, did you see your Da -" She sees her granddaughter hugging a lady.

"Thank you Mommy for coming to my birthday!" Aiko says to the woman.

Kioko takes notice to who Aiko calls 'Mommy'. In realization, Kioko gasps horror-struck and drops the plate in her hand screaming.

Sango and especially Kagome (With Aiko still hugging her) look on very perplexed.

Do you guys consider that a cliffhanger? Well, thanks for waiting so patiently for this chapter ^_^ But I'm sooo sorry for keeping you waiting, but I've been really busy. I'll try to speed up, k? For the *…Well I have no idea if there really is a 'Tokyo Medical Center' and if there is, I don't own it.
