Chapter 5: =Swords and Demons=
Arc and Chizu had been walking, or to be more accurate, sneaking in the forest for at least an hour now, the sun was already peeking through the horizon and if he had to roughly guess he'd say the time was about 8:00 now. He was growing nervous, the scent of the village was slightly stronger now but still faint, as if something was dampening it and if he had to guess they would reach it in about one more hour or so, with the pace they were going at least.
He had told Chizu to remain quiet at all times, since those insects might hear them and if that happened he knew that if they came in large numbers there would be nothing he could do defend against them, since if taking one down took so much out of him, how much would he need to take on a large group of them? The thought was enough to make him shiver.
After what had felt like forever, much to Arcs discomfort because his nerves were now more strained than before, even the snapping of a twig might give him a heart attack. Though, the more he had moved in the forest, the more his mind kept piecing together all that he had observed and heard so far: `The village troubles me, that much is certain but… I am also troubled by those insects, I know that they are not intelligent and they don't the have the ability to think but… the way they took that scout away and left those `warriors' to look for me, it just seemed so… so, organized to me, like they had shared thoughts or something, like they had intelligence in them. Damn, I just wish I understood what was going on!'
That was when his nose and ears picked the sound of those insects again, though these sounded different than the `scouts', so they had to be `soldiers'… he stopped and made a sign for Chizu to keep quiet and after she nodded he looked over the fallen tree trunk, they were behind the trunk so it acted as they're shield from being seen.
What he saw made him swallow nervously, this was bad… there was a small clearing ahead and much to his displeasure: there were six `soldiers' and three `scouts' there, buzzing around and looking for them… he could smell the village more clearly now even if it was still faint and if he had to estimate, if they ran like hell they might reach it in about 30 minutes, 10 if he used his Youkai speed but… crap, being undercover is a bitch, right?
After some quick thinking, he turned to Chizu and whispered to her: "Okay, listen very carefully now, there are a lot of monsters at that clearing and I don't think we can sneak past them together so here's what we will do…" Chizu then said with a whisper: "Arc-sama…?" He didn't see it but her voice was that of frightened as he continued: "I will distract them, while I have they're attention you run back to the village, I will meet you there… (I hope so at least)" Chizu then slowly pointed behind Arc and said again a bit louder this time: "Arc-sama…?" He looked at her and asked with a sigh: "What? If you're worried about me, don't be, I can distract them better if I'm alone…" He then noticed she was pointing behind him, scared look in her eyes… so he ever so slowly turned his head to where she was pointing and after what felt like forever, his eyes came in contact with red, bee Youkai eyes that were staring right back at him, it was a fourth `scout' bee and it seems like they had been hiding right along it's patrol course… and if he didn't know better, he could swear those eyes said with glee: "Gotcha!"
The silence that followed felt like forever, at least to Arc it did feel like an eternity because his adrenalin was now pumping so fast that if he was a human his heart would have exploded… his brains were working over time to figure out how to survive this little predicament…
…….
…….
…….
…….
"Fuck…" was all he managed to say as he began to sweat and grin at bee, hoping to somehow distract it or something, because when you're brains are overflowing with adrenalin and god knows what other chemicals a quarter Youkai with Holy powers has in it's head, it tends to make your ability to think straight or logically rather out of place.
In his head, everything was in super slow motion, the smallest of twitches he insect made was clear like day to him and to be truthful: It made his eyes and head hurt, this went on for an eternity to him and then, just before the insect managed to make any kind of sound, Arcs body decided to have a life of it's own (Which he was thankful for about 2 seconds) and without thinking, which was impossible for him at this point, he suddenly reared his fist back and the only thing the insects eyes were able to catch was a blur before something that resembled a solid rock in it's hardness made a VERY hard contact with it's head, making it's vision and all other senses go off-line for a brief moment before it's eyes caught the sight of the same being who hit it spinning about 360 degrees before extending it's right leg and then it made contact with it's head from the side, the hit was more harder than the previous one which made the insect lose it's ability to fly in midair and it flew straight into the middle of the other insects with a hard crash.
Arc looked at what he had done, there was another silence before he realised that he had now just alerted just about each and everyone of those insects onto his current location… he didn't know how he could hit or kick that hard, it just came out as reflex or something… his line of thought then returned to normal as the rest of the insects first looked at they're battered comrade before they're eyes locked onto him, he could then feel with his empathy powers something he didn't expect to feel: Fury, how could insects that had no feelings or emotions feel fury? That settled one thing to him, these weren't just insects… they were something else entirely.
He then turned to Chizu who hadn't moved an inch during the whole time, she just looked at Arc with wide eyes while her finger was still pointing towards the point where the scout had been just a few seconds ago, Arc kneeled with his back towards her and said with a small, yet serious voice: "Get on Chizu… NOW!" It took less than one second before she rushed onto his back and clutched onto him like Koala, the grip was so tight that had he not been a quarter Youkai she might have crushed just about every bone between his upper back to his waistline.
After she was having him in a death grip, Arc took both his swords into his hands, still sheathed because he couldn't unsheathe Toukiji and unsheathing Tetsusaiga was just as useless since he couldn't make it transform, but while in it's sheath it was a very effective defensive weapon since the scabbard could block virtually any kind of demon attack… he still remembered when his dad told about his and Kagome's fight against the thunder brothers, Hiten and Manten, when his dad had lost the sword and used the scabbard to defend against Hitens powered up thunder attack and after that had blocked several of Hiten's attacks.
Toukiji may be in it's sheath but the scabbard itself was harder than a diamond not to mention he had already killed one of those insects with it rather brutally… (Chapter 2 for details)
So with both swords in his hands and Chizu holding onto him from behind like a Koala, he allowed his Youkai instincts and abilities surface slightly and to be honest, he could never get used to the rush of feelings it caused every time: Firstly his eye sight would enhance themselves so much it took him a second to get used to it, secondly his hearing enhanced so much he could hear both his and Chizus heartbeats not to mention the sound of those insects wings flapping, then his sense of smell increased so much he could smell almost everything around him, ranging from the fear Chizu emitted to the scent of fur the insects had around they're bodies, lastly he could feel his muscles hardening in his chest, legs and arms… Chizu must have noticed this too because he could hear her gasp lightly from feeling his back muscles first rippling and then hardening, without taking his eyes off from the insects he said to her with a dead serious voice: "Chizu, whatever happens, no matter what you hear or see, you must not let go… understand? If you let go, the monsters will get you and I won't be able to save you, it will be scary and if you want to scream do it but whatever happens you must not let go, understand?"
Chizu nodded against his back and couldn't help but feel slightly more at ease, it was the concern and conviction that she heard in his voice that made her feel at ease… she for some reason thought about her father, she didn't know why but feeling Arc so close made it feel like she was hugging her own father, the voice was so similar to it too…
Arc smiled to himself, pleased that he could now feel trust and the feeling of ease coming out of her, he had to be careful though… if he pushed his body to move too fast, Chizu's human body might not be able to take the pressure of his fast movements, it wasn't making it any easier that she was a child and not very well fed either, not to mention he could feel that her body was not in the best of conditions… the insects were now preparing to attack him, he had to be quick, there was no time to stay and fight… which wasn't his intention anyway but instead he had to run like hell straight through them and if some of them tried to stop him he would need to bash them aside with his swords, he also had to watch out if they attacked because if he made a mistake they might hit Chizu instead and for a human child the poisons would be lethal, so this was going to a very tricky hit-and-run… could he do it?
He was getting nervous, really nervous… he briefly began to hesitate again, should he instead retreat and find another path? No, he couldn't afford to waste anymore time, Chizu had said that her mother was sick and judging from the fact she had to find those berries to heal her it had to be very serious, so the more time he took the worse it would become… not to mention if he ran away it would give the insects time to surround him and then attack from all sides at the same time, so attacking through the front might confuse and disorient them long enough to reach the village… though if he brought those Youkai to the village with him… well, at least the villagers could help him since from what his mother and father told him they were all experienced about dealing with Youkai attacks, since the village had been the place where the Shikon no Tama had been guarded not to mention the Youkai war had hit this area too, so there was bound to be people who knew how to fight.
His nervousness was cut by Chizus voice, she asked him with child like curiosity: "Arc-sama… What does `fuck' mean?" Arc could feel his eyes bugging out, he said that out loud? He quickly answered her with a hasty voice: "You're too young to know, ask me again after… 6-8 years, okay?" He could feel her pouting against the back of his kimono and that wiped out his nervousness like it had never been there, he then thought to himself: `What was I being nervous about? Compared to what my mother and father had to go through, this is nothing! They're just a group of insects, I can do this, besides all I have to do is run through them and hope I won't get hit… mom, dad… wish me luck because I'll need it!' With that, he said to Chizu: "Hold on tight, because here we go!" She tightened her hold once again and then Arc began his desperate run for both his and her life.
All that happened next was seen through Arcs eyes like a super slow motion scene from a movie, everything moved like a blur to him, he could see even the tiniest of airwaves around everything and could hear absolutely everything… but he wasn't in control of any of it, his body was having a life of it's own! He had ran straight into the centre of the insect formation, clearly catching them by surprise because they had apparently expected him to run away, not charge in… in they're eyes, Arc had moved like a liquid blur, one second running towards them, the next he had jumped right in front of your eyes and smashing you aside with either one of the sheathed swords.
One scout had tried to fly straight at him to sting at him but his body was no longer operating on reason or logic, instead it was only relying on instincts and with those enhanced instincts of his he could not only hear but he also FELT the insect coming at him long before it even attacked, when it came close enough, Arc suddenly with a backward summersault jumped over it, making Chizu squeak and bury her face more firmly against his back and Arc could feel the pressure of his sudden, fast movements raking across her small body, it was within the limits though…
After landing Arc began to run through them once again, avoiding the sickles the `soldiers' had while dodging the remaining two scouts as well… on the outside it might seem really easy for him to be dodging them but in reality his body was already screaming at him, it wasn't used to being pushed like this even after those 4 months of training, like they say: "No amount of training can prepare you for the real thing." And that was so sadly true… he could feel his heart pounding like crazy and his muscles were already beginning to strain from the amount of pressure they had to endure, though he was glad he had trained before coming because had he not trained his body would have given out on him long ago.
Chizu on the other hand couldn't think at all, she had somehow figured out that Arc was strong but she had not expected him to be THIS fast… she couldn't describe how it felt to be on his back while he was moving with speed like this, it made her feel like screaming her lungs out but it also filled her with child like excitement, it made her feel sick and at the same time really wild… she didn't even think about the monsters around them, she felt so secure when she was hanging onto Arc, despite that he was moving so fast she still trusted him completely.
Arc couldn't believe he was doing this, he was actually getting past all these insects! He could feel his Youkai blood howling with delight for being able to use it's abilities to the limits, it made him feel like he was invincible… until he was almost past all of the insects, that's when one of the `soldiers' got in front of him, it came out of nowhere and before he could think it attacked, both of it's sickles coming to perform a X shape cut onto him…
There was no way he could dodge it in time, at least not without going over the pressure limit that Chizu could take… but then again, if he didn't do it, they would both be dead! Arc thought quickly: `I'm sorry Chizu, please bare with me…' With that, he first crouched slightly before jumping forward so fast that he left after-images of himself (Like when Sesshoumaru moves during combat) and while he jumped towards the insect `soldier', he twisted his body in midair so he avoided the two sickles just barely by a few inches, when he was right in front of the `soldiers' face, he placed both his swords onto his sides and brought to perform a `pincer' strike, meaning attacking from both left and right at the same time, they collided with the `soldiers' head but because of the speed he used, the head was cut off and his swords while still in they're sheaths didn't even slow down, they cut it off like real blades would.
He landed behind the insect and began running as fast as he could again, this time not leaving after images, the `soldier' stood still a few moments before it's head hit the ground, then a massive spring of green blood started coming out of the spot where it's head used to be, the `soldiers' body thrashed around for a few moments before it finally fell down, then twitched lightly before stopped moving completely, it was dead.
The rest of the insects looked at each other, they're antennas vibrating hastily before they took flight after Arc and Chizu, only thinking about one thing: Revenge for they're fallen swarm member.
Arc had slowed down a bit to look behind him, he could hear the insects coming closer and closer… this was bad and to make it worse, he could feel that Chizu had lost conscience due to the force which he had to move with so suddenly, the only way he could get into the village before the insects reached them was by moving as fast as he could with his Youkai speed but… the problem was that Chizu's body wouldn't last if he did, she was just unconscious right now and he was lucky that that had been the only thing to have happened to her, the next time he might cause permanent damage to her small, frail body. So there was only one way out of this mess, he hated it but there was no choice for him right now… he had to fight and kill all of them, he had killed one of them to get here but now he had to kill at least 8-9 more of them, depending on if they had sent someone to get more help.
It was shitty and he was really frightened about it but he had to do it, even though he could feel his body aching and the feeling that he had before when running through them was wearing off, he knew that he had to do it… so with that, Arc first looked around and finally saw a large tree with a hollow point at the bottom, he could hide Chizu there so she would be safe.
With that, he quickly ran to the tree and gently pushed her inside and covered the entrance with his backpack, he then thought: `Man, this is really bad… mom, dad… I wish you were here with me, I really could use some help right about now.' He grimaced and got up, he heard the insects coming and could see them now, they didn't look very happy and had a good reason not to be happy too… after all he had killed two of they're comrades so they had a really good reason to be royally pissed off at him.
He gripped the hilts of both of his swords while looking down on his feet, his breathing was heavy and shaky as he stood in they're path, in a matter of seconds the battle would begin… could he win? No, this wasn't the question whether could he win or not, the case was that he HAD to win or everything would have been for nothing, if he died here then not only would his parents be devastated, everyone he knew would be devastated… but most of all, his mate would be…
That thought triggered something inside of him, the memories of his mate and they're times together flashed before his eyes… every last one of them flashed before his eyes but he could feel everything he had felt during those times, every last one of them. Then he heard his Youkai blood saying to him: {Are you willing to let it end like this? Is this all you can do? Are you really going to die here, in a place you don't know… all alone?} It took Arc less than one second to respond, he jerked his head up suddenly and said rather loudly: "NO! I will live no matter what, I… will… not…DIE!!" Then he could feel his blood boiling with power once again, just like before… his inner Youkai, the blood of a great Tai-Youkai blood he inherited from his father took over again, the blood of a regal Youkai race that would not yield to it's opponents no matter what… this time, Arc was glad the blood took over.
Arc then switched Tetsusaigas position so the scabbard covered his left arm, this way he could use it as a shield to repel attacks while Toukiji could be used to attack, his entire battle pose was positioned in a way that he could move quickly if needed and his nerves became dead calm, so nothing would distract him from the battle ahead. When the Insects arrived, they surrounded him and began to circle around him, looking for an opening to attack, there were 8 of them which meant that one was either watching them from somewhere or was on it's way to get reinforcements. He said with a feral grin, his eyes narrowing into beast like slits: "Come on you little dung beetles, I'm just getting warmed up so try to give me a good run, okay?" The insect `soldiers' just extended they're sickles and the three scouts were ready to swoop in and stab him when needed.
The silence between them was deadly, Arc was barely aware of what was happening to him because the Youkai blood was now in control, he hadn't transformed but he was more than ready to kill them all… and take great pleasure in doing it too.
The silence stretched on and on, neither side attacking… then, as if fate itself wanted this to happen, Arcs feet accidentally stepped on a twig and the small sound it gave was more than enough to start something that would be called a bloodbath… the last thing Arc was completely aware of before a haze of bloodlust clouded his mind was his own battle roar as the insects swooped down onto him like a vengeful swarm…
To be continued…
"Once again I have to let loose my demonic side…
It loves battles and carnage, I don't understand why…
Which one am i? Am I the Youkai or am I still me?
Whichever the answer is, only one thing is certain…
… I must keep going, no matter what, I refuse to die here." - Arcerdo Higurashi.
