Chapter 6: =Inner Demon=
Words could not describe what happened next, it felt like several hours to the ones it happened but for those around them it was more like few minutes, this was a primal battle where thinking wasn't involved, this was Arcs first true battle for survival as a quarter Tai-Youkai, this was a battle where only one would be left standing and would not stop until everyone who dared to oppose the Tai-Youkai within him laid dead around him as the proof of his superiority but there was one thing that scared Arc, even if he wasn't fully aware about all that he was doing at the moment… the thing that scared him was that he liked this feeling, the feeling of anticipation from the incoming bloodbath.
Then it began, with a screech like sound two scouts dove down onto him with they're immense speed from both sides, they were fast and any normal opponent would have trouble dodging they're combined attack… but Arc was no regular opponent, the insects were fast and unlike other insects but the fact of the matter was that Arc was a regal quarter Tai-Youkai and his Youkai blood was thirsty for battle after so many years of waiting…
So when the insects were just about to hit him, he grinned and said: "Too slow!" and with that, he made a 360 degree spin right where he was standing. The spin was so fast it impossible to see what happened inside it but it was executed just at the instant the insects were about to hit him.
From the outside it looked like he had just spun so the insects flew past him without touching him but… the pose Arc held after the spin stopped was troubling: His arms were crossed in front of his face and his eyes were closed, as if waiting for something to happen, and something did happen a few seconds later.
The two scouts hadn't gone even a few meters from his current position before something happened that would have made anyone gasp: The scouts heads suddenly, without any explanation just dropped off from they're bodies and before the blood could start to spray out of they're bodies, the bodies themselves also suddenly split in half vertically, meaning from neck to crotch (Insects don't have crotches but it was just a metaphor, okay?) and the two halves were still flying into different directions because they're wings were still flapping, they had been but so fast that the bodies had not yet realised they were dead! For some reason, they're bodies did not bleed but upon closer inspection you could see the reason why: The parts that were cut had burn marks in them, meaning they weren't just cut with something sharp but also hot like hell.
Arc then opened his eyes and they were still obsidian black but were still beast like slits, his grin spread and it revealed his perfectly white teeth and the two fangs he had, his expression would make anyone freeze with fear since it held only lustful joy of bloodshed…
He lowered his arms and looked the rest of the insects around him, even if Insect Youkai held minimal intelligence… or to be accurate, most of the time they held none at all, they were dead still, they knew that this was no ordinary opponent and that if they attacked they might all be killed. But, insects held no regards for they're own lives, the only thing that mattered was the queens orders… they had no queen right now but they had someone who ruled the nest so his orders were absolute to them… so they attacked once again, except this time every last one of them attacked instead of just one or two of them, it was now all or nothing.
Arc just chuckled, his Youkai blood was highly aware of the insects absolute obedience to they're ruler and that just made it more fun to kill them, since they would fight him until either all of them were dead or they managed by some miracle kill him… this was so much fun to him, the sheer joy of being able to kill those who opposed him was simply overwhelming! He then roared to them just before another round of senseless bloodshed began: "Come on! Give me all you have! Make me feel alive and let me enjoy myself to the fullest!!"
The bloodbath continued… yet which one would prevail?
*Inside the small hole of the tree*
Chizu awoke slowly… she didn't understand, why was her body aching like this? It was like her insides were being pressed tightly together and it was hard to breathe… the last thing she remembered was that she was holding tightly onto Arc while he was fighting his way through those monsters, then there had been a sudden burst of pressure (The time he used his real speed in last chapter) and it had made her black out, what had happened?
She then saw her surroundings, where was she? It would seem that she was inside a hollow point of a tree… what was going on?
That was when she heard a loud screech like noise right outside the tree, the monsters were here! Chizu knew what this meant, Arc-sama was dead… she had no time to mourn or be sad though, because right after the screeching sound there was a heavy silence that made every second that passed stretch so far it felt like an eternity, she could hear her own breathing and heartbeat like they were right next to her ears, her mind was starting to panic and she knew that soon those monsters would find her…
That was when she saw and heard something from being removed from the `entrance' of her little hideout and she closed her eyes intently, knowing that this was it… that is until she felt a warm hand touching her cheek, her eyes snapped open and let out a small shriek as she saw a pair of silver eyes staring at her, she tried to get away but then two arms held her steadily in place with a iron grip and she closed her eyes again, her voice gone and tears of fright coming out of her eyes. Then, before she could struggle any further, a voice broke through her panicked state of mind: "Calm down Chizu! It's me, Arc!" That voice made her stop completely, then with hesitating eyes she looked at his direction and saw those black eyes looking at her, those obsidian black eyes…
Chizu didn't waste a second, she immediately literally jumped out of her hiding place and started crying against him while saying his name over and over again… it made Arc feel both relieved and also bad, it seems like every woman/girl he meets ends up crying against his chest for one reason or another, did he have a sign above him saying: "Free shoulder/chest to cry against"?
Anyway, he rocked her back and forth slowly in attempt to try and ease her down from her crying state… Arc was becoming more and more confused with himself, why was he acting like this? Sure he wanted to calm her down but what he felt… he felt like a father trying to calm down a distressed pup, just like his own parents had done so many times before, it made him both confused and pleased at the same time, was it a Youkai thing? Hell, he didn't have the luxury of asking his parents about it now either… shit.
Well, he tried to calm her down while her crying had stopped but she was still sobbing lightly against him, that was when he realised something: There was a scene that resembled that of hell right behind him… or in other words, the leftovers of a bloody massacred… he gulped, how would a scene like this affect a small child like her and not to mention how in the name of seven hells was he going EXPLAIN it to her? Even if she was a child and would believe just about everything he said but this was something else all together.
But gods seemed to favour him because after a few more moments he could feel her breathing evening out, then he heard her mumbling his name again, but even if sleeping she still said: "Arc-sama…" Which made him groan mentally, she really was like Rin had been as a child from what his parents had told him, if it was anyway possible, he would have guessed she was Rin's daughter or something but it wasn't possible, because Rin was mated to his fathers half-brother, Sesshoumaru and both were still in the present time, if Chizu had been they're child she should be a lot older not to mention… ah screw it, she wasn't they're kid, she didn't have they're scent or anything either and he knew what Sesshoumaru smelled like because Toukijin held that `stuck up regal faggots' scent as his father would put it, so there.
So Chizu fell asleep in his arms, he breathed out with great relief as it happened… especially because his clothes were also covered in small drops of blood here and there, what to expect when you're fighting a group of bloodthirsty insects and are slicing them up? Not to mention his body felt really numb at the moment, it seems like his Youkai blood would could keep going forever but his body could not, right now his head felt a little light and the muscles in both his sides and back were a bit sore… his own breaths were slow and deep and his blood felt like it was still on fire, yet his memory was crystal clear: He remembered every action he took and every though and feeling he felt were fresh on his mind like daylight.
It made him feel… least to say, scared like hell. Every time his sheathed swords either sliced or smashed against an insect, every time he had to use Tetsusaiga to block the insects attacks or even when he was dodging they're attacks… no matter what he did, his inner Youkai was howling and burning with immense and intense feeling of ecstasy from the battle, was that how he really thought? Was that what the Youkai blood in him truly felt? Nothing but pure pleasure of killing…? Was that what he was supposed to become?
He shook his head violently and thought: `NO! That… that can't be me! I don't know what the hell it is or why it acts like that but it is not me, no way it could be… but, just what the hell is it?! Is it my inner Youkai in it's true nature or is it just a side-effect because I can't control my feelings during battle? What is it? It… it scares me, that feeling of bloodlust and intense need to kill, it chills me to the bone, was that what my father felt when he transformed? Damn… mom, dad… (Starts to tremble) What is happening to me…? Why am I… why am I changing like this?'
Arcs line of thought was interrupted by Chizu and he was thankful for it too… that line of thinking made him shiver… his attention returned to the present and slowly took his backpack while still holding Chizu close to himself, he quickly glanced back at the battlefield and it made him grimace on the inside, had he really done all this?
It wasn't that the insects were brutally killed, it was the opposite: The kills were neat and clean… TOO clean… like he had been a cold, calculative killing machine that knew exactly what it was doing. What really scared him was the scents in the air, death mixed with fear, even though insects don't feel the fear of death, whatever Arc had turned into at that time made them feel HIM instead of death, not to mention he himself didn't have a single scratch on him, the insects had fought with all they're might and yet he had killed them without being hit even once, it made him fear his own strength…
He still was amazed that he had been able to calm down his raging Youkai blood, if he ever started using drugs to try and get high, not even the purest form of a drug could make him feel so high like the feeling he had just experienced, he had felt invincible… like he had been a god and those Youkai were just… well, insects… and it scared him, he never wanted to feel it again…
{If you don't want to feel it, then grow a spine you little maggot} said the inner Youkai in him, that's what it said right now… and as much as it hurt to admit it, it was right, unless he grew a spine and started to fight his own battles without having to have to rely on his inner Youkai, he would become a monster himself… but the question was, could he really do it? Could he kill like that? {You doubt yourself again, that is your weakness… pathetic, I'll be seeing you soon again huh?} said his blood with a taunting voice… "Fuck…" was all Arc could say at the moment.
Arc had now been walking for almost an hour now with Chizu on his lap, he should have reached the village by now but his senses were very dull at the moment and he had been practically dragging himself to move, his mind was getting really hazy and cloudy but he forced his body to keep moving… if he passed out now they would both be easy prey to the insects that would be following them soon, he was certain that the remaining scout had brought friends already and by now they must have found the massacre field…
Yet, he kept pushing himself, his body ached and his mind demanded to rest but he kept going… Chizu's safety was his top priority at the moment, so he had to keep going, it was just a little longer… maybe… he wasn't sure, his sense of time was one of the first senses that failed first before the rest began to follow, oh well, if he just kept going he would eventually get there… fuck it…
It was useless for him now, he couldn't even see straight anymore, or to be accurate, he couldn't see shit anymore, he couldn't hear, feel, smell or even sense anything anymore… now he knew what being a zombie was all about, though, having no senses working at all was rather soothing, soothing like a lullaby.
Then his mind blacked out completely and he fell forward, yet acting on pure reflex he twisted his body enough that he fell on his back instead, not wanting to crush Chizu… he could feel his swords pressing against his back and his backpack slipped away from him and landed right next to him, Chizu was just sleeping against his chest while his now completely blacked out mind thought one more thing: `This… really… wasn't… my… day…' And with that, he surrendered to the sweet darkness of unconsciousness… and in the small part of the back of his instincts he could feel the fear of never waking up again only slightly anymore… it was too late now, he was already asleep.
To be continued…
"I sleep as the world keeps moving around me…
Why is the world so cruel? Why do people hurt each other like this?
Why can't everyone just get along? Why can't we just forget our old hatreds and walk together?
The answer is simple…
…Because without suffering, there would be no proof that we live." - Arcerdo Higurashi
