Chapter 12: =Impeding Danger=
*At the insects nest*
The nest was bustling with activity, the news that the `guardians' were being let out made all the others insects scurry and hurry with their duties, the warriors were outside the nest and were scattered all around the perimeter of the forest surrounding the nest to make sure no intruders even came close and scouts were flying everywhere, making sure no one was approaching the nest either.
The workers of the nest were buzzing up and down, back and forth all around inside the nest and you could see a large number of them carrying something that resembled a hard, crystallised cocoons, 4 of them in total and inside them… were something that looked rather, vicious to say the least.
Outside the nest, Kedaru was pacing around, impatiently waiting for the workers to bring out the `guardians'… that stranger who had gotten out of the forest with the child was indeed someone not to be underestimated since he had killed over a dozen insects, scouts and warriors alike, yet, the thought about him trying to fare against the guardians… well, it would be interesting to see just how long he would fare against them.
Then, the worker bees arrived carrying the four crystallised cocoons, Kedaru just hissed to himself, oh yes… the `guardians'… if you thought that warriors were tough, then guardians were something else entirely, just one guardian had the strength of about 20 warriors, not to mention they had a special ability that made them almost invincible in battle… Kedaru would be scared of them if it wasn't for the fact that guardians, even thought strong and invincible, they had no memory or ability to act independently, they only acted on orders, so if he were to tell them to tear the nest into pieces, they wouldn't stop until they had, they knew nothing about exhaustion, fear, anger… nothing, only obedience to orders, since while warriors, workers and scouts still had the small ability to act independently, the guardians didn't… perfect killers, all the way.
The cocoons were dead silent, they were made out of special fluids that were used to make the walls of the nest solid and hard, they were heat, cold and shock proof, meaning there was no way to crack them unless you knew how to do it. The guardians were sealed like that for a reason and were not to be released unless absolutely needed… a trump card if you will.
Right now, Kedaru simply looked into the enormous cocoons, the cocoons were bigger than he himself was but the creatures within them were not, the shadowy figures that could be seen through the crystallised liquid were about the same size as the warriors were… but if you measured them by size… you were in for a surprise.
Kedaru let out a loud: “Khiääh!” sound and some of the workers that were holding weird, bucket like looking objects began to fly above each cocoon and began to pour the liquid contents of the buckets onto them… the liquid was crimson coloured, like blood itself and upon touching the cocoons surfaces, they immediately were absorbed into the cocoons and made their way like blood running through veins into the guardians inside them, this liquid was the key to awakening them and not long before the liquids had been emptied into them, the guardians began to move and the cocoons crystal like surfaces began to melt slowly… soon they would awaken.
Kedaru merely laughed in his mind and thought: `Soon, very soon the guardians will awaken and then I will personally go and get back the crystal, after I have it back, I will gain access to power enough to kill that annoying bastard, Heitaro… and after I'm through disposing that little pest, I will use that power to take over these lands, when I have them, I will show humans the true meaning of the word `hell'… but first, I will kill that stranger for making a fool out of me like this, because of him, my time is running out… hehehe, this is getting more and more interesting by the minute, first three moon priests and now this stranger, hehehe… let's have some fun then, shall we?'
*Back at the village*
Arcerdo was sleeping restlessly… talking to Sumira and eating that apple had made him feel at ease but his dreams, they were far from eased: Memories, memories of the past… that's all he could dream about anymore, he didn't see anything called `dreams' anymore, he hadn't seen a regular dream ever since Kagura disappeared, the only things he saw were playbacks and replays of past memories and feelings, pieces of the past in random pieces… nothing else, only memories.
Right now, he was dreaming about the time they first met… the feelings he felt and the things they did, all that was being replayed, it didn't feel like remembering at all, instead it felt like his mind was desperately trying to hang onto the last active fragments of his bond to her… his mother and father had explained why this was happening when it had first started to happen:
“Son, now that you cannot feel the bond to your mate for some reason, your Youkai blood is frantic and desperate to feel her, since mates are not meant to part away from one another, it is even worse for soul mates, I too went through this once and I never want to even remember what it was like… you see, since you cannot feel her connection to you, your Youkai blood wants… no, NEEDS to feel it or it will go insane from the panic it feels, so instead of dreaming, you see the memories you have about her, it is your Youkai bloods last ditch effort to remind itself that she's out there, that she's alive… so, until you find her or at least feel her bond to you, I'm afraid you're going to see those memories over and over again, I'm sorry son… but that is something neither me nor your mother can help you at.”
So right now, all he could do was just take it like a man and shut up… but that didn't make it any easier at all, he felt like a junkie who couldn't get a hold of his much needed and craved drug, it was a horrible feeling, even though his body was resting his mind could not relax at all… and the fact no one was there to comfort him as he slept made it all the more horrible, sometimes, just for a brief moment, especially when he felt this horrible… he wanted to die… yet that thought was crushed more quicker than it could form in the back of his mind. To put it short, he would literally kill just for one nights worth of good-night sleep, just for one night to actually dream instead of remembering…
However, as if the gods were listening to his silent plea for one night's worth of goodnights sleep… they granted it.
As Arc was laying there, laying on his side and shivered from all the past feelings that passed through him and he kept muttering three names over and over again with a voice barely above a whisper: “Kagura… mother… father…”
It was at that moment that one of the two other inhabitants of the hut he was sleeping in, Chizu, slowly rose up from her mothers hold and began to sleepwalk towards Arcerdo's sleeping form, after standing in front of him, one of her eyes began to glow with gentle, warm light… yet which one? That could not be made out. While her eye glowed, a voice was heard inside her head: `{[ This boy… is strong… not only strong, but also kind, warm and understanding, yet, his heart is hurt, scarred and wounded. It is hard to believe but… this boy possesses the “=White Fang=”, it is still dormant and far from awakening, yet it is already letting out this much power… so, the final part of the prophecy is approaching… “The =White Fang=” and “=Black Claws=”… The Dog and the Wolf, the most ancient and most feared prophecy, it will begin soon.]}'
The voice that was inside Chizu's sleeping mind, sounded ancient and was filled with wisdom… but, there was also a… `mother' like concern in it as well, who that voice belonged to and what it was doing inside her dormant mind? That was a mystery for now.
After those thoughts, the glowing in her eye stopped and her body resumed it's sleepwalking and while Arc was still shivering and lowly whimpering in his sleep, Chizu silently curled against him and as if on pure instinct, Arcs arms pulled her against his chest as her small hands curled against his chest and she whispered one word: “Papa…”
That word, accompanied by the innocent child's feelings of security and warmth, allowed Arc to do something he hadn't done in so long… it allowed his Youkai blood to settle down and for once, just once… he actually saw a dream, a beautiful, warm dream…
*In the modern era*
Kagome was sitting in front of the Goshin-boku (God tree) while looking up at the sky, thinking about her son, she couldn't help but worry about him… what was he doing? Where he was? Was he hurt? Was he sad or happy? She had been feeling restless because of this feeling… she had cried nearly the whole day, whenever she calmed down, she just needed the smallest of reminders about her son to make her crack up again…
Inuyasha must have been a nervous wreck when she wouldn't stop crying, he was there to comfort her every time but it was clear it had been wearing him down… the proof was that right now, he was sleeping deeply, all the times he'd comforted her had finally taken their toll on him, so now while her mate was getting the much earned rest, she herself was out in the yard, looking at the stars underneath the Goshin-boku… praying that her son was alright and safe… but, she knew that during nights like these, he was probably having more of those restless memory replays and this time, neither she nor her mate could be there to comfort him, so she herself couldn't rest at ease, knowing her pup was out there, feeling alone and cold.
As Kagome stared at the sky, she closed her eyes and said: “Inuyasha, I know I should try to be resting but… I just can't, knowing our pup is out there with no one to help him.” After saying all that, there was a small rustling in tree above her and the next thing she felt was her mate landing right next to her and slowly pull her onto his lap while softly nuzzling and purring into her neck, she kept her eyes closed and let out a small moan… she couldn't help it, her mate just always knew what to do to make her feel less tense or just simply make her feel at ease during times of distress like these.
Inuyasha then whispered into her ear with a warm voice: “Mate, don't worry about our pup, he will be alright… he is my pup after all.” Kagome wanted to feel at ease by his words, she should have more confidence on her son's abilities to survive but she couldn't help it… she wanted to know somehow that their pup was doing well, or at least know if there was someone to comfort him while he slept.
Inuyasha could feel her mates conflicting feelings and emotions, he frowned slightly… he knew Kagome and himself would be having a hard time now that their pup had gone to the past and left them and to be honest, he didn't like it either… sure he boasted and tried to sound confident about his son's abilities to survive without them but still, he too felt like just bolting down into the well and make sure he was alright. It was impossible though, the barrier around the well was still there which meant that no one could go after him, no matter how much they wanted to.
It was then, at that very moment that they both felt something… a wave of… peace and warmth suddenly washed over them. It was… from their pup! This feeling of peace and warmth, their pup was dreaming, he was actually seeing a dream! This feeling was from the bond they shared with him and it was the proof, proof that he was safe and well…
While Inuyasha remained silent and stunned from the feeling, Kagome could feel herself becoming calm and peaceful again, her pup was alright… he was alright and seeing a dream at long last, she felt so warm and calm right now, the restlessness that had been devouring her body was gone and replaced with the feeling of serenity once again. The feeling was too much for her, she could feel warm tears slowly coming out of her eyes from the sheer feeling of peace and happiness from the knowledge their pup was alright…
After a short moment, their eyes locked with one another's and both knew what each other were thinking… Kagome just simply smiled with teary eyes as Inuyasha slowly picked her up bridal style and she cuddled against his chest, feeling his purr and allowing it to take her away into peaceful dreamland, she was finally able to rest easily since now she knew that their pup was alright, that there was nothing to worry about for now.
Inuyasha carried her back towards the front door of their home, feeling at peace himself as well… so, his pup was finally able to dream once again, good… it meant he was safe and had something that gave him comfort through his dream, he also sighed with relief when he felt Kagome cuddle against him, her eyes closing and a happy sigh escaping her lips before falling asleep in his arms, she looked so beautiful when sleeping so peacefully like this… it melted his heart every time he saw it.
Then, just as he opened the front door, he felt something behind him and when he looked behind him by turning his head to look over his shoulder, his eyes widened for a brief moment but after blinking them to make sure what he saw was real, it was gone… he stood there for a moment, feeling his body tense for a second before shaking his head and walking inside the house, concluding that what he saw was the result of exhaustion and worry, nothing more.
He concluded this because, at that second, right there, for the duration of an blink of an eye… at the front yard, a figure had been standing there… but what had made him feel like it was just a trick of the moonlight, was that… well… that figure had looked just like…
(Sorry, but I am not going to answer, you'll have to wait for those answers)
But, the figure itself had been real alright, for right now… it sat on the roof of the Higurashi shrine and thought once again: `Too close… that was too close for comfort… I didn't think he'd be able to feel my presence but… well, I guess some things are just more stronger than even the best of all cloaking spells. It hurts though, it hurts to wait like this, I've waited for so long… and yet now I must wait for a few more months, just a few more months, I have to hang on… there is too much at stake to screw it all up now, especially since if I showed myself now, it will only become more painful when the end arrives, I must stay strong… for they have gone through enough grief for now, I must let them rest and recover for what lies up ahead, for both myself and them.' And with that, the figure laid down onto the roof and looked at the moon above itself, silently it tried to suppress all the painful feelings that were welling up inside it… it just hurt so much, they were so close and yet… shit.
To be Continued…
“A dream… it is something I've missed for so long…
At long last, I was able to rest and feel at ease, last time felt like an eternity ago…
But, danger has arrived… a danger more serious than I've ever faced before…
… But I will not run away, if I cannot face something like this, how will I ever find my soul mate?” - Arcerdo Higurashi
