Chapter 4

Memories on the Wind

Kagome shivered as the wind blew across her face, the air felt cool against her tear streaked cheeks. It was as if her entire being had been brought back to shuddering and painful life. She felt everything as she remembered it; the anger, the anguish, and the passion. The walls that she had erected around her broken heart began to crack and crumble, and the raw pain of a reopened wound panged through her.

Kagome almost longed for the numbness to return so that she would not have to relive this heartache again. Why now? Why after she had come so far? She was trying to move on damn it! She didn’t need to remember Inuyasha and his stupid temper, or the way he protected her, or the way he broke her heart, or the way that he made her tremble with need.

She turned from the tree, as if it was the one at fault. She clenched her fists, willing the memories to go away. She slapped at her arms and shook herself as if trying to dispel the touches that had felt so real. Scrubbing at her tearstained cheeks like a furious child, she huffed and started back towards home.
Walking back to her house was an act of pure concentration. Kagome counted each step out, one...two...three…

Open the door.

Go up the stairs.

Once in her room, Kagome let loose in a flurry of activity. She scuttled back and forth in the tiny room, straightening up, changing, moving things around, brushing her hair. Anything. Anything to not think, to not remember.

She was relieved when Souta knocked on the door, announcing dinner, the food and conversation a welcome distraction. Eventually, Kagome was able to put the evening’s events from her mind and resume her normal life. She chatted happily with her mother, genuinely happy, for the first time since she made her final return home. They talked excitedly about college. Kagome had almost forgotten that she would be leaving in the next couple of days. The time had gone by so quickly that it had snuck up on her.

. . .

Kagome stretched tiredly in her bed. The day had been long and quite draining. Closing her eyes she sighed and wiggled down into her bed, more than ready for sleep.

The sheets rustled as she flopped to her stomach. And then to her side. Then back to her stomach and over to her other side, subsequently tangling herself in her sheets. Rolling onto her back again only served to tighten the cocoon. She sighed in frustration, opening her heavy eyelids. The young woman glared blearily at the sheets, struggling to yank herself free.

This was not restful.

The sheets just got tighter the more she pulled so she decided to roll over to try and loosen them. Now I know how mummies feel. The rolling seemed to work as the sheets began to pull free. Maybe that relief was the reason she forgot to stop rolling, and fell off the bed.

“Why me?” she groaned, rubbing her head.

. . .

The morning came all too quickly for Kagome. It had felt as if she had only just gotten to sleep when her alarm sounded.

Forcing her tired body up, she made her way to the shower. She had to get ready for work, sleepy or not. But getting ready for work being this tired was probably the worst thing Kagome ever had to do. She felt like the walking dead.

Kagome stiffened at the irony of that thought. She let even let out a rueful ‘ha’ as she continued what she was doing. She gave no further thought to anything of that matter and for some reason she felt a whole lot less tired than before.

The shower hissed to life and steam began to rise, curling upward in transparent tendrils. The hot water felt good on her skin, making it tingle as the blood rushed to the surface. A nice hot shower was the perfect thing for her sore and tired body.

After her shower the young woman breezed about the house, toweling her hair dry as she went. She ate breakfast as quickly as politeness would allow and then ran out the door to work. The day was beautiful and cool, and the sun shone down as if trying to fend off the impending winter. Kagome could not remember the last time there had been such a lovely day.

Yes, things were getting back to normal.

The next few days slipped by quickly, and her time to go off to college was drawing near. Packing was surprisingly easy for Kagome; there wasn’t much that she wanted to take with her. She went around her room gathering things that were of importance. She was almost done, but she couldn’t seem to find the case for her calculator.

“Where is that stupid thing?”

She was grumbling as she puttered about, searching in every nook and cranny she could think of. She yanked open a drawer at her desk and stopped as her fingers skimmed over a little white cardboard box. With trembling hands she picked up the box and gently pulled off the cover.

She tipped the box and let its contents slide out into her hand. Delicately, she ran a finger over the smooth cool beads, listening to them click as they shifted in her hand. Pinching a bead in her fingers, she gingerly lifted the rosary from her palm. Twisting her hand so the necklace laid partially in her palm she began to run her fingers lovingly over the thing that had been her first connection to Inuyasha.

Closing turbulent blue eyes, the young woman sighed. She pressed the beads over her aching heart, feeling their hardness through her shirt. Letting out a breath that shook with emotion, she placed the beads reverently back into their box and replaced it in the drawer.

Part of her wanted to take the rosary with her, but she quashed that part in defiance of her battered heart. She had tucked the rosary away and she wanted to forget about it, it wasn’t something that she needed to carry around with her. It was something that she shouldn’t have even kept, but Kagome just couldn’t bring herself to get rid of it.

Looking down on the desk she saw the calculator case she had been searching for poking out from under some papers. She snatched it up and went about her packing once more. She tried poignantly to ignore the inkling she got that the beads in the drawer wanted to go with her. That was silly, beads couldn’t want.
“I’m not taking them.” She said, as if anyone could hear her.

She’d be damned if the fates would toy with her once more and dredge up all that she had buried within. This was not what she needed. She needed to heal. She had gone through emotional hell and it wasn’t something she wanted to repeat. She didn’t want to grow stagnant and bitter in her wallowing. It was over; it had been over for a long time. There was no looking back. There wasn’t even anything she really could look back at.
Leaving for college was sounding better every minute. At least there she wouldn’t be reminded of Inuyasha by everything around her. This place was haunted with him, his presence saturating the present and the past.

Okay, so maybe packing was a little more stressful than she had originally thought.

. . .

The campus was beautiful, more so than she expected. She never had a chance to check it out before now because her family could not afford all of the train tickets to go back and forth. She had hoped that it would be at least a little bit as nice as the pictures in the pamphlet suggested.

The brochures didn’t do it justice.

It was a highly regarded school, old and prestigious. And yet is seemed like a well kept secret. The school was a bit off the beaten path, a quality that kept all of Kagome’s friends from expressing more than a passing interest in attending. But it suited her just fine. The campus itself was set into the western mountains, and Kagome savored the nostalgia of it all. The air here was clean and crisp, reminiscent of the wild and free land it had been so very long ago. She didn’t know why she chose a place that reminded her so much of the past when normally she was forcing the memories down like bad oden. Yet there was comfort in this place, and it would hurt far less being here than at home.

Realizing she had more important things to do than ponder all the reasons for her current place of being, Kagome took one last deep breath of fresh air and headed inside. Back in her room she smiled, her mom had helped her unpack the few things that she had brought with her, and she was settled in nicely. The room was small, but comfortable, with a large window above her bed. There were three other rooms in the suite, with a common room that had a balcony overlooking the forest. Currently, two of Kagome’s suitemates sat on the couch watching cheesy romance movies. They had invited her to join but she declined as politely as she could, saying that she wanted to explore the campus, as she had never been before.

Kagome spent hours wandering around campus. She felt dwarfed by the enormous stone buildings. The girl marveled at the architecture, it was reminiscent of a fortress. The grounds were breathtaking. There were lush lawns and majestic trees, and stone benches sprinkled the cobblestone pathways.

Dusk settled on the horizon, and a hearty gust of wind rippled through the grass in the center courtyard of the grounds. There were a few other students milling about, but none of them seemed to take notice of Kagome, for which she was relieved. This day was made for solitude. The serenity of the place had lent her a tenuous peace that would have easily been broken by a conversation. No, interaction was not something that she wanted for today.

The wind blew again, almost haughtily, lifting the edges of her shirt. It reminded her a little bit of Koga. The wind just seemed to have an arrogant quality, and it was as if it was reminding her of where it was that she really should be, once again. It really was time to head back to her room, it was getting late and classes started in the morning. Hopefully she would be able to sleep in this place; a new bed wasn’t the most comforting thing in the whole world. Especially when no one else that you knew or loved would be near.

A tiredness swept over Kagome as soon as she entered her suite. The other girls were sniffling on the couch, now thoroughly engrossed in their movie. This allowed Kagome to slip by with no more interaction than a brief exchange of smiles. Once in her room, she all but collapsed on her bed, not wanting to even change. She reasoned with herself, making a deal that after five minutes of her resting her tired eyes she would get up and change. She felt the relaxation of sleep ebbing at the edges of her consciousness, the dark of her closed eyes seemed to darken more, and the simple resting of her eyes turned into a deep and sorely needed sleep.

Kagome woke up with a cold sweat that made her clothes cling to her uncomfortably. In her sleep she had curled herself into a lump on her bed, probably trying to get warm. But now as she awoke her limbs felt sore and stiff with the awkwardness of her position. It was probably the crappiest way to wake up. Tentatively, she stretched her pained limbs, letting things pop and set back into place. She was still quite tired, but she had an overtired energy that would not allow her to just go back to sleep. Hefting her sleep weary body up and out of her bed, she picked at her clothes to get them unstuck from her body.

Her clothes were horribly wrinkled and her hair sat oddly in its half pulled out ponytail on her head. She pulled out her hair tie and rumpled her hair, wincing at the ache of it having been held too tightly in its ponytail. Kagome squinted and yawned into the back of her hand, blinking furiously afterwards. She looked at the clock and almost groaned when she realized it was one thirty in the morning. Quietly she crept out of her room into the common. The room was dark and empty, the girls and their movie now long gone. The moonlight spilled through the sliding glass doors that led to the balcony, and Kagome was compelled to go outside and stare at the star studded sky. She gently slid open the door, trying not to disturb the peace of the sleeping suite.

The cool night air caressed her body as she stepped outside. The night was utterly quiet and still, save the occasional chirp of a cricket, the inky sky glittered with stars and the moon shone with an ethereal glow. The place was a living memory. It was the same this night as almost every other night spent in the feudal era, camping under the stars.

Her memories were barely being held at bay, the night seemed to want to drag them from her, just like the day at the tree.

“It’s my own fault really.” She whispered aloud, as if the sound of her voice would wake the slumbering world before her. Tucking her arms against the cold, she gave herself a squeeze. She was running out of other things to think of, everything that she came up with would have something that would relate back to the past, her friends, Inuyasha. She felt her walls begin to crumble again, and she could hear the words he spoke to her so long ago.

‘I can’t give you eternity. All I can give you is here and now. I know that you deserve so much more, but that time is not mine to give.’

Kagome sucked in a breath, leaning back against the building. She tilted her head to look at the moon as it shown down on her, its milky rays enfolding her in its almost sympathetic embrace. The moon bore witness to many a battered and restless heart, and it hung solemnly in the air awaiting each anguished lover and their sorrow.

‘And Gods! When that mangy wolf touches you, this anger consumes me. That filthy wolf doesn’t deserve to lay a finger on you. You are too good for him. I just want to pound that smug look off his face. Like I’d ever let him near you. HIS WOMAN MY ASS! ’

She could still hear the vehemence and contempt in his words, and she shivered at the memory of the way his tone changed. The drop in his voice that had made all the hairs on her body stand on end.

‘He can’t have you, because I need you.’

The way he had stood before her, his hands on her shoulders, forcing her to listen to him. They both knew she had given in, she had let him explain it all away, because in the end she had wanted it just as bad as he. If not worse. The memory of that night alone was enough to break her heart a million times over. How stupid they were, using each other as comfort. It didn’t matter if they really did care for each other, every time they were together was an act of pure selfishness. And this night heralded memories of nights when their selfish ways knew no bounds. Nights like these when they would cling to one another like the desolate creatures they were. They worked out all of their frustrations, all of their pain, and all of their heartache on each other. They made the excuse that they truly cared. She told herself that she comforted him because she loved him, denying the truth that it was really herself she was comforting. She could never admit that she was letting him be with her so that she could have what Kikyo could not. She told herself that she wasn’t that person. Instead she let him consume her on those nights. His intensity was unfathomable, and even though she knew his reasons for coming to her on those wretched nights, she felt as if in those moments she was his world as he was hers.

By the way, if you notice that there really isn't that much talking or action for that matter, don't worry, there will be.
