As of this chapter you are all officially up to date on the story. The next chapter to come will be the one that I have just written (well I am in the process right now).
Uh, so I realize that I need to go back and edit this whole story as it was formatted much differently from the origional one.. but right now I have far too much going on. SO, I am sorry to say, you all will just have to deal with the problems, because for some reason.... my word processor won't upload to the site and everything is on notepad (baaaasic).
As far as the story goes, I hate clothing descriptions, daily life crap, and OC's, and yet somehow they all ended up in this chapter... BUT I did my best not to make it so... just stupid... sorry ahead of time if I failed.
ANYWAYS.. here you go.

Chapter 6
Ghosts of Heartache
Despite waking up in the middle of the night and being assaulted with memories of all her past mistakes, Kagome got a pretty good sleep. She felt unusually rested, and chocked it up to having been extremely tired both physically and emotionally. Today was a new day, she felt refreshed and ready to travel down the new path before her. Maybe last night she finally put her demons to rest.
Or maybe not, but still, nothing was going to wreck the good mood she was in this morning.
Her suitemates were pleased when she agreed to go to breakfast with them. They came knocking on her door in their pajamas, smiling shyly and asking if she wanted to join them. Kagome had smiled back warmly and readily agreed, completely ready to talk and make friends.
Kagome gave herself one last critical look in the mirror, she didn’t want to look like a wreck on her first day of classes. That would give a terrible first impression. She sighed wistfully at her reflection. Going to college was so much different than high school. She almost missed the little green uniform skirt and her Mary-Jane shoes. Although, she was glad to be rid of that awful sailor shirt. The freedom to wear whatever she wanted to school almost threw her for a loop. She never knew what she should wear.
Kagome had opted this day for a pair of khaki colored capris and a light blue sweater over a white tank. Her raven hair that had always been worn out long was pulled into a wispy bun atop her head. She decided that she looked much more grown up with her hair back like that, and was quite pleased with her casual yet classy attire.
Yes, college was going to be fun.
. . .
Breakfast had been a blast and she was glad she went. She found out that one of her suitemates, Hikari, was in her composition class. That would alleviate the guessing game played when everyone first takes their seat. No one wants to sit next to the weird kid, or the smelly guy, or the girl with the annoying voice. Hikari was laid back and nice, totally someone Kagome would not mind sitting next to. Not to mention she didn’t stink or sound like someone who sat in a room full of helium in their spare time.
The other girls were just as nice as Hikari. There was Mai, Ryoko, and Sayuri. Hikari and Sayuri were twins, both with beautiful straight brown hair and big brown eyes. Mai had short black hair and dark eyes, and Ryoko, who was half English, had light brown hair and grey eyes. The girls were all lovely, and they made Kagome blush when they gushed about how pretty her wavy black hair and blue eyes were.
“My hair is so flat. I can’t do anything with it.” Sayuri griped.
“You’re so lucky Kagome, your hair is amazing. You should let it down more.” Said Mai through a mouthful of cereal, pointing her spoon at Kagome she continued “I would kill to have volume like yours.”
Kagome just smiled, she wasn’t going to argue the fact that her hair was a frizzy mess half the time, and it would always get snarled and hurt to brush out.
The girls laughed and talked, worrying over how their professors would be and hoping they would get a cute college grad instead of some crusty old dinosaur. Which brought up the subject of boys, Mai had three boyfriends in the past two months, Hikari and Sayuri both had boyfriends, who were actually cousins, and Ryoko just broke it off with the guy she’d been dating for a few months.
“So Kagome, do you have a boyfriend?” Hikari inquired, before sipping on some orange juice.
Kagome smiled awkwardly. “Oh no. Not really anyone that interesting back home.” She lied.
“Don’t worry, there’s plenty of cute boys here Kagome.” Ryoko said cheerfully. “There’s this really good looking boy who lives on the first floor, I think his name is Ronin.”
“I wouldn’t bother, boyfriends are nothing but pains.” Mai said after swallowing another bite of cereal, “They are all needy and clingy, and demanding. You should just concentrate on your schoolwork, that’s a more constructive use of your time.”
“This coming from the girl who’s had the most boyfriends in the past two months than anyone at this table,” Laughed Hikari stirring her yogurt and taking a big dripping mouthful.
“Seriously!” Mai smiled, “Why do you think none of mine ever lasted more than two and a half weeks? Too needy. I’m too young to be a mom, I don’t need to look after some big oaf who can’t tell left from right.”
“Maybe you just go in for the wrong kind of guy.” Kagome offered, trying to participate in the conversation. It was an effort, but hey she was in a good mood, so why not?
Mai frowned, “You know, you might be right.” She smiled warmly at Kagome, “I’m just a sucker for losers I guess.”
Breakfast went on in that fashion; the girls stuffed their faces, talked and laughed, and got to know one another. It was pleasant and they all decided that it was a new suite tradition. When it came time for class Kagome was in a bright mood, having eaten a hearty and well prepared breakfast and been more social than in, what felt like, ages.
The first class went by without a hitch, the professor was a funny old man from America who was extremely enthusiastic about his subject. The second class was even better, as it was composition, and Kagome got to sit with Hikari. The girls nearly squealed with delight when their professor sauntered in, he was a very good looking man, probably in his late twenties, with the most enchanting voice and stunning smile.
“We got a supermodel for a teacher.” Hikari whispered delightedly
“Wait till we tell the girls.” Kagome giggled back.
All the other girls in the class were giggling at the professor too. The guys in the classroom were slightly less enthusiastic. Kagome didn’t normally go gaga over a teacher, but this guy was like movie star good looking, any normal red-blooded girl would have swooned. Needless to say, the second class went by swimmingly.
Lunch time rolled around quickly and Kagome was relieved to be done with all her first day classes. Hikari, Sayuri, and Mai all had afternoon classes and would be eating lunch late. Luckily for Kagome, Ryoko had the rest of the afternoon free and joined her for lunch. The campus had a lovely little café on the far side of the courtyard. It was reminiscent of an English tearoom with its quaint wrought iron tables and chairs, and lovely flowered tablecloths. The food smelled delicious, and Kagome and Ryoko stood over the glass case, trying to decide what they wanted. Kagome had decided to have some rice balls and Ryoko settled on some udon with vegetables. The hungry women ate happily and Kagome sighed inwardly with contentment. Today is perfect.
“I’m so jealous.” Ryoko gushed, “Hayashi-sensei is so good looking!”
Kagome smiled impishly, remembering her charming composition professor and his gorgeous smile.
“I’d worry I would fail his class though,” Ryoko said thoughtfully.
“Why’s that?” Kagome questioned as she took a bite of her rice ball.
“Mmm.” Ryoko swallowed, “I would spend much more time day dreaming about him than actually listening to what he was saying.”
Kagome laughed. Typical.
“Yeah, I don’t think he is that good looking. Although Hikari might have a hard time”
The two girls laughed together and finished their food.
Another great meal for Kagome, this day was just too good to be true.
“So, I was thinking.” Ryoko said as they walked to the trash. “Since you ditched us and our movie fest last night, you have no choice but to spend some time with us tonight!”
Kagome blushed, she really had been anti-social last night.
“Oh, sorry about that. It’s just, well I never got a chance to look around campus before yesterday, and I really wanted to before classes started. Well, that and romance movies aren’t really my thing.”
Ryoko smiled. “Wow Kagome. I don’t believe I have ever met a girl who didn’t like romantic movies.” She stopped in her tracks, a nasty little smirk played on her face. “No boyfriend, no romance movies, no falling head over heels for your super hot teacher. Kagome,” Ryoko put her hands on her hips and leaned forward, a mischievous look sparkling in her eye. “You’re a lesbian aren’t you?”
Kagome spluttered. “WHA-?” She couldn’t believe her ears.
Ryoko gave a little snicker as Kagome went through various shades of red.
“It’s okay Kagome, you don’t have to hide it from me. I am very open minded. In fact my cousin…”
“Ryoko, I’m not!”
“Into men, I know.” Ryoko began to laugh as Kagome gave a screech, “Oh Kagome! Relax! I am only teasing. You don’t seem the type at all.”
Kagome sighed in exasperation. She nearly had a heart attack. She had nothing against lesbians in the least, but to be called one when she most clearly was not, was startling. Did she really come off that way?
“Hey, hey now. Don’t go reading too much into it. I just like to tease.”
“I don’t have anything against them you know.”
“I know, but I also thought that you would squirm a little if I said I thought you were one. You’re one of those really nice girls with lots of good sense and morals. I can tell.”
Kagome smiled at Ryoko warily, she could tell that this was going to be the beginning of an interesting friendship. The girls walked back to their dorm, Ryoko teasing Kagome along the way, until Kagome stopped in horror.
“My bag!”
Ryoko gave the girl an incredulous look. “Ka-go-me!”
“Look, you just go on ahead, I’ll run and get it myself. Ok?”
Kagome whirled around and jogged off to retrieve her bag. Way to go Kagome, lose your bag and all your books before you’ve even had all your classes.
She reached the café quickly and was quite relieved to see her bag sitting right where she left it. She pulled it up and set it on the table, opening it and examining the contents. Once she was satisfied nothing had been stolen she hefted the bag onto her shoulder and made her way back to her dorm. She walked at a far more leisurely pace as she headed to her room, taking in the pristine courtyard of the college. She gazed appreciatively at the well kept shrubbery, then the beautiful architecture, and finally her eyes were drawn skyward. She walked on, gawking at the bright blue sky and the puffy white clouds above her, happily oblivious to nearly everything around her but the vague idea of a path to her suite.
The grounds were fairly empty at this hour as class was in session, but it did not mean that there was no one walking about. This was not something that Kagome was aware of, until that is, she connected abruptly with half of a solid body. She and her human wall both gave a small ‘oof’ on impact and she noticed the sound of a back pack falling to the ground. Immediately she scolded herself for walking around with her head almost literally in the clouds, she should have been watching where she was going.
“I’m so sorry.” She said towards the chest of a man, who was quite obviously taller than herself. She tilted her head to look up at his face and smile apologetically.
The smile died before it made it to her face, as Kagome felt like the air was ripped from her lungs. Her world froze, it was if everything had been set on pause, there was no movement, no sound only the face before her.
Kagome was slammed with so many emotions she didn’t know what to do. She wanted to scream, she wanted to cry, she wanted to jump for joy, but most of all she wanted to run. She wanted to run far away and forget this ever happened. She wanted to forget this face.
“Nah, it’s my fault, I should’ve been watchin’ where I was going.”
Kagome felt like she had been slapped. He even had the same voice. She looked at him with an expression exuding nothing short of horror. She almost gaped as if he were the most grotesque being she ever encountered. There before her stood a man, who was a near exact likeness of Inuyasha.
Kagome was unexplainably mortified at the sight of him. He had pale blonde hair, nearly the silvery white of her dead lover, his face seemed to have been cast from the exact mold of the hanyou himself and she realized he even had eyes that were so honey brown they looked gold. The only thing he was missing was a few inches of hair and some cute doggy ears.
The man seemed oblivious to the inner turmoil that had exploded within Kagome as he bent to collect his fallen bag. She was in a daze, standing there like even the blood in her veins had frozen. When he looked up at her she caught the upward tilt of his lips. That smirk showed a bright white and pointy, yet still very human, canine tooth. But the tooth disappeared behind lips that were immediately turned down in a frown as the man seemed to take Kagome in for the first time.
“Are you alright?” he asked stepping forward to place a tentative hand on her shoulder.
Kagome swayed at the touch, it was electric, and all at once the contact made her skin burn. Before she could even think, she swatted his hand away and took a step back. She stood like a cornered animal and stared at him. She snapped out of her daze when a slightly perturbed look settled over the man’s face.
“I’m fine.” She said in a tone that was a lot tighter than she had meant it to be. She shook visibly as she stood before him. She furrowed her brows slightly and tried to relax her trembling limbs.
“Well, ya sure don’t look ok.” He began folding his arms.
He was frowning even deeper and Kagome looked down, clenching her eyes shut. He looked so much like Inuyasha, standing there like that, she just couldn’t bring herself to look at him. She didn’t see his face soften as she did so, his arms dropped and a hand reached out towards her.
“I’m really sorry, honest.” He said, drawing his hand back as if realizing that maybe physical comfort was not something that would help at this moment.
Kagome’s head jerked up immediately and she glared at him. A sudden fury had risen up in her like nothing she had ever felt before.
“I don’t need your stupid apology!” she snapped.
The man before her looked taken aback for a second before a scowl set on his own face.
“You are crazy woman!” he said tersely “All I did was bump into you accidently, and then you look at me like I was a three headed snake when I ask you if you were all right. There’s something wrong with you. You need to learn some manners.”
“Manners?” she spat vehemently “I need manners? You insufferable jerk, YOU need manners. You…you... ahrg!”
The light haired man took a step forward raising a finger and opening his mouth to make an argument, his advance signaling a defense mechanism in Kagome.
“SIT BOY” she yelled angrily.
The man flinched, looking almost like he had expected something to follow her words. He was only caught off guard for a second before realization of what she just yelled at him registered on his face. He looked at her with a mixture of disbelief and disgust.
“What the hell?” he demanded, “You’ve got to be kidding me, you-” The man paused, he seemed to be reaching for words that just weren’t there. “Look, lady…” He began in a dangerous tone.
“I have a name moron!” She snapped “It’s Kagome! KA-GO-ME!” she stated, stepping forward and stabbing her finger into his chest as she punctuated each syllable.
Both people froze in an epiphany. This was all too familiar. Kagome stood momentarily horror struck.
This was all wrong.
This wasn’t Inuyasha that she was yelling at, this was some random guy, who only accidently bumped into her. He looked just like the dead betrayer of her heart, but it wasn’t really him. A deep aching sadness echoed through Kagome, reminiscent of the pain she had felt after the gates of hell had shut, swallowing Inuyasha and Kikyo whole. It felt like she lost him all over again, as all her anger melted away.
She felt ashamed, she had no right to yell at this guy.
She looked up at his face, pain etched into her features, and before he could blink she was tearing away from where he stood, running as if it would save her life. If she had dared to look over her shoulder she would see the young man rooted to his spot, shocked. And if she had really looked before she had left, she would have seen the vague recognition of her words in his eyes.
Inuyasha’s look-alike stared after Kagome as she sprinted away. He didn’t understand what the hell just happened.
. . .
Ok so first, an apology to anyone who took the lesbian jibe as offensive, it was not meant to be in the least, it was a joke to attempt to lighten the mood, and seriously it's not that big a deal.
Other than that, some of you who didn't realize before or were hoping this wasn't, well it is a reincarnation fic. But don't go hating me yet. I am not offing or replacing dear Inuyasha, I am just.. ah.. giving him a more gradual appearance in the story. And well, things would be too easy if it was just him in disguise or something, and how would I explain him coming back from hell? Really now.
I am doing my best to keep this from being corny, the last thing I want to do is make some stupid story that has no real meaning. But I can't make everything easy either, otherwise what was the point of Kagome going through so much pain? I am not about to waste everyone's time with a wham-bam-happily-ever-after after so much build up. No way!
So I apologise if this chapter wasn't the best thing ever, it was hard to write, like I said I hate OC's all that.. oh well (btw they don't play a big role, Kagome just needed some social interaction) Thanks for reading.
