Chapter 8

Too Much Déjà Vu

'The.'

“The?”

Kagome riffled through her notes for the millionth time. The what? No matter how hard she stared at the highlighted sheets of paper, the answers would not appear. Kagome had come down with a colossal case of writer’s block. She had been outside “writing” for a solid hour and the most she could manage was a one syllable word that by the second looked to be the wrong word to begin with.

The rest of her less constructive efforts were evident in the doodled stick men falling down the margins of her paper, and the bald spots where she had torn out chunks of grass. For the sake of the lawn it was probably time for a break, maybe a walk or something. A stroll around campus would help her think. Well, think about all the things that had been distracting her in the first place. Like a certain golden eyed boy that just happened to look exactly like Inuyasha.

Kagome could not deny that the mere sight of him brought all those butterflies she had thought dead, fluttering back to life. Every time she saw him around campus these past few weeks her insides would turn over and her heart would palpitate like she was about to go down the highest peak on a roller coaster. He would smile and wave, and make small talk and she would just blush and mumble like a fool. Currently, though, she was in no mood to examine all the reasons why that was wrong. She was still a little confused about why he didn’t scare the hell out of her any more, or why she thought that he should. He made her nervous, but it was in a new way. And that just made everything so much more complicated.

As she packed up her things she heard the soft swish of footsteps on grass. Looking up she couldn’t help the hot blush that rushed to her face. Her heart fluttered in her chest as she stared up into dark honey eyes.

“Get any work done?” Kin asked from above her, towering in his height and making Kagome uneasy.

Kagome sighed, frowning slightly. “Actually, not much.”

Kin plopped down next to Kagome, sitting in a very familiar cross legged position. He glanced down at her bag and the scattered sheets of paper at her feet, then up to her face, before looking out to the courtyard. If

Kagome hadn’t busied herself once more with nervously packing her bag, she would have seen the light pink dusted across the young man’s cheeks.

“You got class?” he inquired.

“Nope, all done actually.” Kagome said brightly, relieved in that fact.

“Good. Have dinner with me.” He said, turning to look at her.

Kagome blinked, not quite comprehending what he had just said. 'Dinner?'

“I-“

She panicked; she didn’t know what to say. Did she want to spend time with him, get to know him? Yes, she was more than intrigued with the guy, but she wasn’t ready to date him. The thought of a date terrified her, the fear that she had been questioning returning once more. The poor girl gaped at him, floundering for an excuse.

“You can’t be full, lunch was a few hours ago,” he said glancing down at the bare patches in the grass, “and from the looks of it, you haven’t moved from this spot for a while, so you couldn’t have eaten.”

This guy was too sharp, and for some reason this surprised Kagome enormously. She opened and closed her mouth a couple of times, staring dumbly at him. He had her cornered.

“It’s not a date.” He said gently.

Kagome relaxed slightly, she suddenly felt very guilty for reacting the way that she did. Finally finding her voice she replied.

“I- guess I can.” She said, sounding far more uncertain than she would have liked.

“Good, let’s go.”

With that he stood up in one fluid motion. He offered her a hand and smirked down at her knowingly. Kagome blushed and took his hand. As soon as his skin touched hers she felt that electric shock once again. She snatched her hand back as soon as he pulled her to her feet.

“They are serving oden tonight. I heard it’s really good.”

Kagome smiled warmly at him, he was saying all the right things. Part of her wanted to be wary of him and his charms but another part of her stomped the suspicious part down in favor of finally feeling good for once.

“Oden is my favorite.” She said as they walked toward the cafeteria.

Kagome didn’t miss the envious stares of some of the girls they passed in the cafeteria. Apparently Kin was a hot commodity, and to everyone else it looked like he was off the market. But to Kagome this was just dinner.

Right?

Right.

This was just dinner, and they were just new friends, trying to get to know each other. That’s why when they walked together it was at a respectful distance, and when they looked at each other there weren’t any lingering looks and silences. It was just dinner, with a new friend. That’s all.

So why was she trying so hard to convince herself?

“This is great.” Kin said through a mouthful of oden.

“Yeah,” Kagome said absently.

“What’s the matter? Don’t ya like it?” He said and sat staring at her mid-chew.

She smiled brightly at him, “No, it’s good, really. I’m just kind of stressing out.”

Kagome got good at telling half truths. She wouldn’t call herself a liar, but she definitely omitted key things here and there. In truth she was stressed, but she would never tell Kin the real reason why, she didn’t really know the real reason herself. Because as comfortable as she felt around him, strange enough as that was, she was also completely on edge.

Kin looked at her with mild concern as he continued chewing his food. He swallowed his giant mouthful loudly and cleared his throat.

“Anything I can help with?”

Kagome caught the slight note of worry in his question, and she had to smile. He was sweet.

“It’s only my paper, I have a horrible case of writer’s block and it’s due in two days.”

There it was, the half truth that made Kin feel better and gave Kagome something to hide behind. Yes she had writer’s block, but she was only slightly concerned about her paper, she could crank that out last minute if need be.

“What’s it on?” Kin’s interest seemed to be piqued at her admission.

“Oh it’s just a composition paper, a comparison between informative articles and research papers. It’s just a
practice writing exercise, but it’s so boring that I can’t come up with how to even start it.”

Kin smiled, “I can help you out if you want. I took composition my last year of high school because I was finished with my credits early.”

Kagome did her best not to gawk at Kin, he really was smart. It should not surprise her this much, but it did.

“I don’t know about you, but for me I write papers best when I break down each paragraph, writing individual sentences and supports before combining the whole thing. It makes everything go a lot smoother and surprisingly quicker too.” Kin offered.

“That’s a really good idea.”

Kin chuckled, “Thanks, I’m always trying to find ways to make work easier and faster. I’m a slacker in disguise.”

Their conversation went on about the various strategies and pointers Kin could offer her, and Kagome finally felt that she could get this paper knocked out quickly and quite easily. They finished their food and decided to go for a walk, changing their conversation to the kinds of things people trying to get to know each other would talk about.

Kin was an athlete; he played soccer and practiced Kendo and Taijutsu. He was also quite clever, but as he admitted, a bit of a slacker. He loved action movies and horror films, and most especially dirty comedies. He loved music and he even liked to read a little. He was so completely interesting, and he seemed to find Kagome the same as he listened with rapt attention when she answered the many questions he posed her. Their conversations had become easy, and Kagome did her best not to jump back when they would brush arms occasionally, their proximity becoming closer as the evening wore on.

At dusk Kin had excitedly told Kagome about a great discovery he made about the campus and grabbed her hand to drag her to the spot. Kagome blushed wildly as they jogged through the campus, noting some more of the frowning girls they passed. She was breathless as they reached a large flight of stone stairs. She looked up at the bell tower for the school in slight shock. The tower was such a random place to be. It had no purpose other than ringing ever once in a while; it seemed more for ambiance than function. The giant bell rang every hour until seven and then rang the ninth of the night, midnight, and sixth hour of the next day, before resuming the hour to hour tolls again. The bell was ringing as Kin tugged Kagome with him up the stairs.

“You have to see this.” He said excitedly.

. . .

The orange sun blanketed the treetops in its warm fading glow. The sky glowed pink and purple and the clouds accented the horizon with their soft wispy streaks. The cool autumn air blew gently over the two standing on the opening of the bell tower. The sight was beautiful, and for a moment Kagome couldn’t breathe. From this side of the tower, all one could see was the forest. Kagome felt like she was back in the feudal era once again. It was amazing.

The sun set slowly behind the trees and the sky turned an inky blue. The white diamond stars glittered above, and the silvery moon sat high in the sky, cushioned by the blue-gray clouds around it. Through the dim light
Kagome saw Kin smiling slightly at the scene before them. He looked so handsome in the moonlight, his slightly tan skin looked dark and warm, his golden brown eyes looked so dark as well but his light hair seemed silver in the moonlight. Kin must have felt Kagome staring because he turned to look at her. When he did that small smile he had been sporting faded as his eyes widened slightly. A look that Kagome had not seen in so very long passed through his eyes as he stared at her, and it made her heart leap wildly in her chest.

Kin took a step towards Kagome, it was small, almost unconscious it seemed. Kagome was frozen in place. The next steps Kin took toward Kagome were bolder than the first. The breath that Kagome could not take was drawn in quickly as he got closer to her.

Kin stood close to Kagome, searching her face, looking for something. He seemed perplexed and lost, but also driven. Gently, tentatively, he moved his hand to cradle the side of Kagome’s face. She could feel the searing heat of his hand on her cheek, but she was still frozen in place. Her mind was whirling and racing and the world seemed to spin around them.

Slowly Kin lowered his head to Kagome’s level, his face close to hers. His eyes were closed as he let his lips linger a breath away from hers. His breathing was shaky as he hesitated. He was going to kiss her! Kagome flinched at the thought, she wasn’t ready yet.

'No.'

Kin had clearly felt Kagome flinch and he sighed and backed away slowly. When he opened his eyes she could tell that he was slightly disappointed.

“I’m sorry.” She whispered. “I have to go.”

She left before he could say anything to her, and she was glad that he made no move to stop her. Her heart was pounding in her chest and her mind was screaming at her. The mistrustful part screeching how she should have known, how she shouldn’t have even gone to dinner with him, the liar. And then there was the part that was happy he’d asked her to join him, that part was even angrier for denying them both what they wanted. And that part horrified her; Kagome couldn’t believe how much she had wanted Kin to kiss her. She didn’t know how she should feel about that. It just made everything more complicated.

Why did everything have to be this hard?

She sulked as she walked briskly back to her dorm. The cool night air had turned cold and she was shivering, wishing she had a nice warm sweater. When she finally got to her suite Ryoko and Ronin were lounging on the couch watching a movie, the others no where in sight.

“Oh, I’m not interrupting am I?” Kagome said, startled.

“No, no, no. We’re just watching a movie.” Ryoko smiled.

“You’re back early.” Ronin said giving Kagome an appraising look.

“Early?” Kagome questioned in surprise.

“Yeah, I saw you jogging off with Kin up to the bell tower.”

Ryoko sat up and grinned at Kagome, waggling her eyebrow suggestively. Kagome frowned as she blushed crimson.

“The cute blond with the gold eyes? Kagome, you surprise me, you act all put off by men and you bag one of the best looking guys on campus.”

Ronin gave a cough from next to Ryoko. The young woman laughed at him and seemed to remember something. She slipped from the couch and padded past Kagome to a table with a pile of papers. Selecting cream colored envelope she turned and presented it to her suitemate.

“This came for you today, it looks important.”

Kagome stared at the envelope warily before taking it. She offered a small ‘thanks’ and prayed that whatever was inside the envelope would not dampen her mood any more than it already was. It was light in her hand, and the outside was blank save for her name written neatly in the middle. It wasn’t official looking, but it seemed strangely important. When Kagome looked back up, Ryoko had already sat back down with Ronin and the pair had resumed their movie, forgetting Kagome was there at all. The raven haired girl gave a shrug and turned to her room, closing her door quietly behind her.

Kagome sat on her bed, and turned the envelope over in her hand. She pealed it open gently, pulling out the
folded piece of letter paper inside.

Unfolding the parchment stationary, she stared at the dark black letters inside.

'Higurashi Kagome, Report to the Dean’s office Wednesday, 9:00 am.'

“Wednesday?” she said aloud. That’s tomorrow.

Kagome wanted to tear the letter into little pieces. The dean? What the hell did the DEAN want with her? What a terrible day, it wasn’t enough that her emotions were messed with today, no, now she got a random ominous letter from the Dean. Was someone out to get her? Couldn’t she just exist and be happy and NORMAL?

Sighing furiously she set the letter on her nightstand and stood to change. Whatever was going on, she was going to find out in the morning, No use mulling over it now.

. . .

Kagome shifted in her chair again, still completely unable to find a comfortable position. She had been waiting in the office for ten minutes now and it had done nothing for her nerves. When she had arrived the secretary directed her to the seats in the corner and said to wait while the Dean finished his early morning meeting. So here she was, twiddling her thumbs and wondering just why she needed to be here. She raked her brain for anything that she could have done, but could find nothing within her knowledge to be offensive or in breech of school conduct.

“Higurashi Kagome.”

The pleasant voice startled the girl, her head snapping up at the calling of her name. The Dean smiled down at her, gesturing for her to come into his office. The sheer amiable nature he projected immediately put Kagome at ease. He was most certainly a pleasant old man.

When she entered into the office she noticed the standard décor of a Dean’s office. The only thing that seemed out of the ordinary was the large set of doors in the far corner or the spacious office.

“Will you please follow me?”

Kagome nodded and followed as the Dean opened the large doors. Behind them was a long corridor with windows on both sides, casting copious amounts of light throughout the space, and making it feel otherworldly.

“If you don’t mind me asking, where exactly are we going?” Kagome asked, she was still completely lost at her reasons for being here.

The old man chuckled.

“Oh yes, I suppose you would like to know why you are even here as well. My dear, the founder of the college has expressed an interest in you, and has requested to meet with you. It really is quite an honor; he doesn’t meet with many people these days.”

That answer didn’t help at all.

They continued to walk the corridor and ended up in front of another large set of doors. In the next room it was quite darker than the hallway they had passed through. This room was even larger than the Dean’s office, and furnished with a plush leather couch and a gigantic desk. Kagome marveled at the space, taking in the beautiful art and decorations that seemed to span through various time periods. There had to be something from every age of importance hanging on the walls, and then some things that Kagome could not recognize. Kagome was impressed at the collection. But something bothered her, and the decades of artifacts and things didn’t help. How could she meet the founder? The school was at least a hundred years old, and the guy couldn’t have been too young when he opened the school. That would make him far too old to be alive and kicking today, wouldn’t it?

Kagome pondered extensively as she looked about, her eyes falling on a beautiful white kimono hanging on the wall. It had red flowers and a yellow and purple sash, and looked oddly like it could have belonged to…

“Higurashi Kagome” came the dulcet tone from behind her.

Kagome whipped around to stare in utter shock at the owner of that very familiar voice.

“Sesshomaru?”

Surprise could not even begin to cover her reaction to seeing the demon lord. A million questions immediately clouded Kagome’s mind, making her dizzy as she took him in. He looked like a pretty normal man, his familiar markings gone as well as his elfish ears, and a business suit replacing the white garb and armor as was his customary attire in the feudal era. The only things that seemed to have remained the same were his long silver locks and golden eyes.

“Kagome. We have much to discuss.”

The tai-youkai turned to the Dean and dismissed him before turning back to the bewildered young woman. He pointed to a large leather chair sitting in front of his hulking desk, and Kagome moved to sit.

She had so many questions buzzing on the tip of her tongue, but she was relieved when Sesshomaru began without prompting.

“It is likely you have many questions that you would like answered, I am sure. I cannot answer them all at this moment, but I will tell you a few things that are of importance.”
Kagome was almost aghast at the way he was talking to her. It was nearly as formal as she had expected he would talk, but his tone didn’t hold that icy air of condescension it once did.

“We will begin with the most obvious. The school is my own, I started it for purposes that will be explained later to you, but I am as you may have surmised, the founder. Your acceptance to this school was by no coincidence.” He began, seating himself behind the desk and looking at Kagome intently. “My appearance is concealed for practical purposes, but as you may have sensed I am youkai.”

Kagome nodded dumbly at him, in truth she had not sensed his demon aura, but now that he mentioned it, she could feel it faintly. It was if it was toned down or something.

“It has come to my attention that you have met and are interacting with a student on the campus by the name of Kin.”

Kagome blinked at the demon, he seriously brought her here to discuss her personal relationships? Was this really Sesshomaru?

“You most likely noticed the boy’s uncanny resemblance to my late brother?”

Kagome flinched.

“It may not come as a surprise to you that he is in fact the reincarnation of Inuyasha.”

All the air rushed out of Kagome’s lungs. She’d noticed the resemblance, but never did the idea occur to her that he could be the reincarnation of Inuyasha. Her heart sank deep in her chest, aching with something old and familiar. This changed everything.

“How h-how do you know?” The young woman asked meekly.

Sesshomaru stared hard at Kagome. He regarded her intensely before giving a slight frown.

“Take this not as a statement of personal preference, but, Inuyasha was never supposed to die.”
