Chapter 6
.
.
Rin buried her face in her pillow. This was the most emotional she'd been since as long as she could remember. She felt awful for inconveniencing Inuyasha and Kagome. She felt bad for jeopardizing Kyoutsu's life. She felt like giving in and just accepting she was naive about everything like everyone said. Worst of all she felt disappointed that she'd been away from Sesshomaru and Ah-Un for so long she couldn't even remember his growls. She would have bet her life on it today, that that really was Ah-Un. And if not for Inuyasha, she would have had to pay for it.
.
.
And what about Kyoutsu? Maybe he was right...maybe her expectations were impossible. It was just that, after being with Sesshomaru for so long, trusting him with her life, and he always lived up to her trust, why couldn't every man be like him? (A/N: I hear ya loud and clear Rin-chan! So do all the fangirls!)
.
.
She was also confused. Where was Sesshomaru? Did he really forget her? Why couldn't she forget him? And so what if no one measured up to him....what did that have to do with her? What did Sesshomaru have to do with the kind of man she wanted?
.
.
The door to the hut opened slowly. Kagome peeked in, then entered and knelt beside Rin. Rin wiped her tears away again, embarrassed.
.
.
.
“Hey Rin,” Kagome said tenderly. She had a hairbrush in her hand and patted her lap. “Come on, I'll brush your hair. My mom used to do it for me when I felt crumby,” she confessed. Rin laid her head on Kagome's skirt, still sniffling. “I'm really sorry Kagome-san.....and to Inuyasha-sama..”
.
.
Kagome brushed her hair slowly from top to bottom. It was so long now, and shining and beautiful. “Don't worry Rin, I know why you did it, and I sympathize with you.” “Really?” Rin asked, twiddling her fingers with Kagome's skirt.
.
.
“Sure,” Kagome nodded thinking back to her travels with the Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku and Shippo, on the hunt for the Shikon jewel shards. “There were a lot of times when I rushed into bad situations, because I was stressed, or busy worrying about Inuyasha. But after all those times everything turned out alright, ne?”
.
.
Rin listened, silently, enjoying having her hair brushed. “Besides,” Kagome blushed, “I'm sorry too, for missing our swimming session.” Inuyasha's naked body and groggy face flashed in Rin's head again. She too blushed, “Heh, don't mention it Kagome-san.”
.
.
.
Rin shifted her weight a little and turn onto her other side. Kagome continued brushing her hair gently. “I just wish I could forget about Lord Sesshomaru,” Rin whispered.
.
.
Kagome thought for a moment before replying. “Is that really what you want Rin?”
.
.
“I don't know what I want. I just know that I want people to stop thinking I'm naive, and I want to know why Lord Sesshomaru doesn't care about me enough to visit in half a year even though he made a promise. And I want to know why I feel like if a boy isn't like Lord Sesshomaru...then....,” she trailed off. “Then what, Rin?”
.
.
“Then why does it matter so much to me?” Rin asked. Kagome sighed, “Well Rin, a lot of times girls have one male-figure in their life, ne?” She was trying to stray away from using the word `father'.
.
.
“So then, now every other boy you meet, you feel like they should be as amazing as Sesshomaru-sama. It's just unfortunate for them because it's hard to measure up to someone like that. Right Rin?” Kagome explained.
.
.
.
That made some sense to Rin. A lot of sense. “So...how do I stop thinking of Lord Sesshomaru then? I don't want to scare away every boy I meet,” she said cringing. “Well, maybe you should appreciate things that other boys have, that Sesshomaru-sama doesn't have, hm?” Kagome mused. “Like what?”
“Hmm....maybe a boy who likes to joke around a lot, like Miroku-sama. Or someone more energetic and spunky like Shippo-chan. Maybe even--” Rin sat up suddenly and turned to face Kagome. “But Sesshomaru-sama does joke around!”
.
.
Kagome raised her eyebrow and set down the hairbrush, “Er...he does?” “Yes! He always does, in his own special way. He taunts and teases Jakken-sama, and he laughs too!”
.
.
.
Kagome couldn't imagine Sesshomaru laughing if you held a gun to her head and ordered her to do so. It was just....no. The demon lord Sesshomaru, lethal, stoic, icy....and laughing? No...noonono.
.
.
“He laughs?” Kagome egged on slowly. “Yes! In his own special way again! He does this!” She leaned forward to Kagome eagerly and twitched her mouth once, then gave a crisp, barely-there smile by turning up the corner of her lips. “Like dizz...” she said holding the face while speaking.
.
.
“And he smiles rarely but...when he does, it's the most beautiful smile ever in the whole wide world,” Rin whispered staring at the ground shyly, half spaced-out, with a loving, tender look in her eyes.
.
.
Kagome scratched the back of her hair thinking, `Oh boy.' She could almost see the hearts in Rin's eyes. Kagome moved her feet nervously....should she ask? She felt like she had to. She just had to know...was she right? Or was Inuyasha right?
.
.
“Ne, Rin san, you don't have to answer but, Sesshomaru-sama took care of you very well, almost like a father. Would you say that's right?” Kagome felt so nervous asking this question. She didn't want to offend Rin, or confuse her, or disgust her, or anything! She immediately regretted asking such a thing.
.
.
But Rin looked up with her big, soft, chocolatey eyes. She started laughing, slowly at first, and then faster, and she had to hold her stomach because it started hurting from all the laughing. Kagome was so confused, what was so funny? Rin took a few moments to get out of her giggle fit. “Kagome-san! Sesshomaru-sama is not my father at all!”
.
.
“Oh?” Kagome asked, tip-toeing through the conversation carefully. “Nuh-uh,” Rin said shaking her head quickly from side to side. “When I met Sesshomaru-sama, he was hurt, and I tried to take care of him deep in the woods. After he recovered, he found me dead and brought me back to life with Tenseiga! And then he started taking care of me too. And from then we took care of each other!” Rin explained.
.
.
.
“So then Sesshomaru-sama doesn't feel anything like a dad at all,” Kagome confirmed smiling. “Mhmm,” Rin nodded. “Sesshomaru-sama calls me his ward sometimes, but he's my ward too! He's my best friend! We worry about each other and I know when he's upset and he knows how I feel too and when I'm happy he's usually happy and that makes me even more happy! And when he's angry he does things that he regrets later, but I always help him! One time he wanted to throw his sword away, but I knew deep down he just wasn't feeling good, and he would want it back later. So I carried it back for him and I was right!”
.
.
.
Rin chattered on and on cheerfully to Kagome for hours. They made tea and ate cookies and Kagome happily let her ramble on. She was glad Rin stopped crying, and seeing her so chattery and bubbly again made her happy, and it was definitely interesting hearing all about Sesshomaru from Rin's point of view. It really made her wonder how well she knew Sesshomaru herself, because the person Rin was describing was definitely no ice prince.
