Ch 5 - The Morning After

"Clam down Kikyo." Inuyasha said as he walked upstairs to the second floor of the club followed by Kikyo and Amaye. He could hear the sirens of the police and ambulance but they were at least 5 minutes away. The plan was always to meet on the second floor of the club and have everyone leave thru the hidden backstairs and doors.

"Inuyasha, she put a fucking gun to Amaye's head and you save her?!" Kikyo yelled. Inuyasha flattened his ears as the yell vibrated thru him. He hated when she yelled it was like screeching to him and his sensitive ears.

As turned to face her when they got to the second floor landing, "I get it Kikyo. I won't stop you next time."

Kikyo took a very big offense to Inuyasha's "bad" deed. He had never stopped her before. And she got the inkling that he wasn't telling her something. Kikyo was jealous by nature and usually Inuyasha never paid attention to the girls, because he knew there was a big chance they would end up dead. But this time he didn't just pay attention to the girl; he saved her!

"Good." She said as she wrapped her arms around his neck, "Because next time she dies, regardless of what you do." She said with a smile. Kikyo didn't like to think about it but she really enjoyed using her power, even if it was to hurt people.

Inuyasha just rolled his eyes at her dramatics. He felt a tap on his arm; he turned to his friend Miroku. He was usually a carefree leach but right now he had a worried look on his face.

"What's wrong?" Inuyasha asked.

"Have you checked the safe yet?" he asked in an unsure voice. Miroku knew how Inuyasha's anger was. He also knew that Inuyasha had the tendency to hurt the messenger of bad news.

Inuyasha shook his head, "No why?" He let go of Kikyo and started walking to the back doors. The sirens were almost there. He turned to Miroku, "Just go. I'll be fine."

Miroku turned to everyone and started ordering them to get out. Even though Kouga was the leader, Inuyasha took certain responsibilities upon himself. He didn't see the leader on the landing with everyone but Inuyasha wasn't that worried for the guy's safety. The back doors lead to a stairwell that went both upstairs and down. There was a secret safe upstairs that had the most valuable things. He nearly flew upstairs anxiety written all over his face. He had a feeling what was gone but he hoped he was wrong.

He entered the little room and found Kouga sitting in front of the safe. Inuyasha walked up to it, his fears answered. He felt Kouga's hand on his shoulder. Pulling him to follow.

"Come on Inuyasha. We'll figure out something later. We have to go the police are here."

Inuyasha couldn't hear the sirens anymore they were muddled by the pounding of his heart. He couldn't believe that it was gone, the only thing his father had given him to remember him by. The Shikon Jewel was gone.

"Wake up Kagome." Yura shook her awake. Kagome woke up startled. She looked from her place in backseat; they were in front of her house. The light rays of sky were becoming visible, making the stars fade. It would be morning soon. She glanced at the clock 5:15.

"Why did you bring me here?" she had thought they would take her back to the hideout. At least that was what she hoped. She really didn't want to be home right now, her father was still home.

"Sesshoumaru told us to bring you home. We'll come for you later today or tomorrow. There's some shit going down that only members can know. And technically you're not a member." Yura said.

Kagome sat up and looked at Yura, "When will I be initiated."

Yura shrugged, "Whenever Sesshoumaru wants. I don't know though what he'll do in your case. No one has ever helped with a job without being a member. Maybe he'll let you join without having to go through the usual process."

"What is the process?" Kagome questioned. She had a clue about what it was but she hoped that she was wrong.

Kuagra interjected with the answer, "You have to fuck someone in the group." She said it with a smile.

"Oh." It was all Kagome could say to that answer. That was what she thought. She looked down at her clothes. *This really isn't me is it?* She pushed those thoughts aside as she looked at the shirt and tennis shoes she was wearing only a couple hours ago.

"I'll give you your clothes back when I see you again okay Yura? I mean I will see you again right?" she asked. Even though this wasn't her she still wanted to be a part of it.

Yura shook her head, "Don't worry about the clothes. I'll have Hojo come get you or something."

She was about to get out the car when she remembered, "Here." She handed Yura the gun she used that night. She got out and watched them drive away.

Her house loomed before as she walked up the drive. She felt this doom settle inside her stomach. Her home life was never one to be happy about. After her mother re-married, everything had gone down hill. They had to move because the man didn't know how to handle finances, that job went to Kagome now that the family realized the mistake.

She quietly opened the door; she didn't want anyone to wake up. Her gaze fell over the debris left from the fight her mother and stepfather had. The bookcase was still on the ground with all the books and little statues scattered across the floor. *I'll clean it tomorrow.*

Her mother was too busy with working double-shifts and HE was too busy lying on the couch yelling at her to lift his lazy ass. Her mother worked to escape, Kagome already knew that. They, her, her mother, and her brother, all did something outside to help make staying home shorter. She walked upstairs thinking of the night as almost a fond memory. She opened the door to her brother's room to check on him. The little light that was filtering in from the window showed that he wasn't in bed.

*Where is he?* He came home. She knew that because when she had left he was still in his room. She never wanted to leave but sometimes it was too much for even her to bear. He was just too young to go anywhere. She wished he never had to hear the yelling and sounds of crashing objects. She went across the hall and tried her door. It was locked.

*He must have slept in my room.*

Her room had the only lock, except for the master bedroom, and a lot of times when he didn't feel safe he would sleep in her room. They both had keys so he could open the door even if she wasn't there. *I better buy him a lock.* She unlocked her door and opened it to the sight of him sleeping on the floor.

Souta was only 13 going on 20. He worried way too much for someone his age. But she felt sorry for him sometimes. He was too young to remember how life was before their father died. Life was pretty good before that damn drunk driver hit his car when she was 8 and he was only 5. When he was 10, he almost made her cry when he asked her what their father was like. It didn't make her sad that he had asked, it made her sad because she had such a hard time remembering anything at all. She had only snatches of the man. All she could tell him was to ask their mother.

She stepped over the sleeping form of her brother. She took off her boots and sat on her comfy bed. It was one of the first things she bought when she got enough money. She used to work for Keade, but that stopped when school had become too much. Now all she had were her savings, and that was dwindling day by day. She would ask her mom for money but she already worked so hard for so little.

She didn't even think about changing. She had to get up for school in a little while anyway. *Why even go?* She was always good about school. But now, after tonight and having the knowledge that she wouldn't be going to college she started wondering if there was any point in even going. She shook the notion from her head though, *My mom wants me to graduate.*

As she laid down her thoughts turned to Inuyasha. *I still can't believe he saved my life.* Yura's comment about him not saving anyone came back to her. *I wonder why he did.*

Her eyes began to flutter as sleep clouded her mind. *Why am I thinking about him anyway? That jerk works for the enemy.* Kagome stifled a yawn as she gave up to sleep. She dreamed a spectrum of gold and red.

"Don't feel so bad Inuyasha." Kikyo was trying console him. "We'll get it back. We know that Sesshoumaru took it." They were alone in his apartment. Even though Inuyasha tried to hide his sorrow, it showed to Kikyo thru his anger. He had already broken nearly every mirror he could find and smashed many plates on the floor. Kikyo almost had to hit him with a surge of her power before he realized maybe going to Demon territory and fighting Sesshoumaru for the jewel wouldn't be such a good idea.

Inuyasha shook his head, "You don't get it Kikyo. That's all I have left of my father."

~~~FLASHBACK~~~
The smell of death permeated every fabric in the room. Even though Inuyasha had never smelled death in his young age, it was a smell that signified decay. As he stood alone in the room of his father last resting place, he knew he would never forget the smell. It had burned itself in his nose and his memory.
The maid had ushered him in the room to speak to his father for the last time. Inuyasha had always seen his father as a strong man but he looked so withered on the bed. He slowly crept up to the bed, his father looked asleep but even with his young ears he could tell by his heartbeat he was awake.
His father was the first to speak, "Inuyasha my time is not long and I fear that I may not have much time before I can speak my peace to you." His breath was ragged and a struggle. Inuyasha kneeled by his father's side.
"There is a box with your initials on it. I want you take with you and never let your brother have it. Promise me he won't he will never it. It was meant for good and I fear that your brother may not have enough inside him. I have already blamed myself for his spirit, but I thank your mother for yours. Use my gift wisely and keep it safe. I didn't know what to use it for until I met your mother. All I can hope is that the same happens to you."
His father's nurse had entered at that moment interrupting his father. Inuyasha would have sent the wench away himself; only looking at his father told Inuyasha that the man didn't have any time left. He left then and let Sesshoumaru see their father. That night their father died. Sesshoumaru didn't look so unhappy but Inuyasha felt his world break.
~~~~END~~~~

he still wondered what his father meant since that day. He had no idea what his father had in store for him. He thought about it a lot, and worried that in the end he would fail.

"We have to get it back. I still don't know what my father meant. Sesshoumaru knows but I know he won't say." Inuyasha said indignantly.

Inuyasha doubted Kikyo could understand him. Both of her parents were still alive, living a perfect little existence. She had never told her parents about her powers or about being in a gang, she did have an image to maintain. This was partly the reason Inuyasha felt that Kikyo never truly cared about him or his situation. She was just too different sometimes.

The shrill ring of his cell phone brought him out of his thoughts. He got up to pick up his cell and Kikyo laid back on the bed tired from the night before.

"Hello?" He really didn't feel like talking but it was someone from the Wolves, they were the only ones to call him using his cell.

"Hey Inuyasha. I think I found another person." Shippou said excitedly. Shippou was the youngest of the pack at 14. He was an orphan and Sango had taken the responsibility of him. The young kitsune was good for something, he found other people to join their pack. Every time he found someone he would call Inuyasha for the okay since Kouga was too busy.

"Yea? How old is he?" The age was important to Inuyasha because he never wanted anyone too young. The young ones were always a problem; they could turn out to be like Shippou. Inuyasha and Shippou had never got along great. In fact they were almost always arguing but that didn't mean Inuyasha didn't like the kid.

There was a pause in Shippou's response, "Uh...He's 13." Before Inuyasha could interrupt Shippou continued quickly; "But I think he would do REALLY good. He's smart. And I like him, he's really fun. He is mature for his age too, he can be pretty serious."

Inuyasha rolled his eyes, "Is that really a reason? Besides why do you think he would join?"

That question made Shippou shut-up, "Um...Can't I just have a feeling? Why don't you meet him first? Please?" Inuyasha usually met the recruits before they were talked to about joining. He gave Shippou the benefit of the doubt.

"Fine. What's his name?"

"Souta."

A/n: I want to first thank everyone for their reviews. It only makes me write more. I really didn't know how to continue after such an exciting beginning but I thought maybe it would be time to start the real plot and so on. So tell me what you think. Thanx.
