Chapter 16 - Back Then

I do remember days when I young

I wish I was a child of ten again

I'm running…

"They snap their teeth on a cigarette.
Foren tipes with their hooka pipes sing:
o-ah-ah-o-aaa-ooo-ooo-aaa,
Walk like an Egyption."

"Sweetie are you listening?" Inuyasha's mother asked from the front seat, her voice a light, sweet pitch to his tiny ears. She turned and looked at her silver-headed son as he tossed around his old stuffed neko and absently sang with the radio.

Inuyasha looked up with a toothy smile to his mother; "Yes mommy. I know I know be nice and share." They were meeting friends of his dad's tonight. They were going to eat and have fun. At least that's what his mom had said; Sesshoumaru had said they were going so his mom and dad could leave him there with the strangers. The little boy just stuck his tongue out at that. Inuyasha didn't like his brother very much. He was happy though that Sesshoumaru had that left day for summer camp.

His parents had said something about bettering his social skills.

"Mommy do they have any kids?" Inuyasha asked as threw his stuffed toy up and down. It was old but it was his favorite. The right eye was gone; having been dispensed of years earlier before Inuyasha could even remember. The color of the neko was ruined; once black had changed, from washing and age, to a rusty brown. There was a rainbow colored gathering of stitches all over it from being sewn back together over and over from the rambunctious play of children with fangs.

"They do have a little boy named Kouga about 6 or 7." answered his father who was driving. They had been driving for a while and Inuyasha had realized they were leaving the city. They must have been because his nose had stopped picking up scents that only belonged in the city; like smog, garbage and other pollutants humans daily let out.

The boy looked out the window and stared as the scenery passed him by. All he could see where hills that would be great for him to roll on and forests that would be perfect for his dad to teach him how to hunt. He wanted very much for his family to stop the car and them just eat there, among the scenery but no, his dad would never say yes. Maybe I can get mommy to take me here another time. They passed cows and Inuyasha wrinkled his nose as manure came to his senses. Cows really were only good for eating.

After what seemed like forever, they arrived. As they drove up to the house even Inuyasha took notice of how big the place was. It was even bigger then his house and he had always considered his place the biggest house ever. The front lawn was big and green and his little nose could pick up the scent of freshly cut grass. They drove to the front and a man opened the door for his mother. That was when a very different scent hit Inuyasha's little nose. He wrinkled it and concentrated. What's that?

The door was opened for him and Inuyasha was about to get out with his neko in hand when he had second thoughts. I should leave it here. He didn't know the little boy he was about to meet and didn't know if he could trust his toy with him.

He stood in between his parents. The new scent still bothered his nose. He remembered his father sometimes came home with that same scent but he never thought about it enough to ask. He tugged the sleeve of his mother's lavender and white kimono dress carefully. She never wore her kimonos unless something special was happening; "Mama. What's that smell?" he whispered.

His father spoke; "It's wolf."

7 years later1993

The sun was shining and Inuyasha was feeling pretty good. Or at least as good as he could feel with it being the first day of the school year at a new school with new scratchy uniforms. He and Kouga were walking to the junior high school this year, forget elementary. Inuyasha was ignoring Kouga's looks as he listened to his favorite new American rapper; Snoop doggy dog.

"With so much drama in the LBC it's kinda hard bein' Snoop D O double G. But I somehow, some way, keep comin' up with funky-ass shit like- OW!" Inuyasha said as he felt Kouga elbow him in the gut. He growled and took off his headphones.

"What was that for?" he said. They were almost to school and listening to some music before always put him in a good mood.

"What's with you and American music?" Kouga asked. It wasn't like he didn't like American music; he just couldn't listen to it as much as Inuyasha. "Do you even know what you're saying?" Neither boy was that good in English.

"Doesn't matter. Music is universal." Inuyasha retorted with. He did know most of what he was saying thanks to translation dictionaries; but he still couldn't figure out what LBC meant.

Kouga just rolled his eyes, "Just because you like it doesn't mean you have to say it out loud and hurt my ears. Ok?" He stopped walking and looked Inuyasha in the eye, "Please promise me Inuyasha never be a rapper." He broke into a laugh as he saw the sour look on his friend's face.

"Fuck you." Inuyasha said in English. The questioning look on Kouga's face was more then enough for him to be grateful for rap music teaching him some English.

"What does that mean?" Kouga asked, following in the steps beside the hanyou, who was ignoring him.

Inuyasha had already put on his headphones which peacefully blocked out the noise the wolf made; "I got bitches in the livin' room gettin' it on. And they ain't leavin' till 6 in the morning."

**

The place was smelly. Inuyasha's senses couldn't ignore the foul stench of sweat and dirt that the place seemed to be covered in. He was one of many boys dressed in shorts and t-shirts lined up against a wall in the school's one of two gyms. Their teacher, a man named Mojimi, was pacing in front of them. His whistle necklace swished back and forth with every one of his moves. The man was not old but not that young. And for a gym teacher he also wasn't that healthy. He was human so he would never know that the sniffles he was getting were a prelude to the bigger flu virus that was going around at the time.

"Welcome to 7th grade P.E." hollered Mr. Mojimi; like instead of just being in a class they were at a circus. His voice echoed of the dark crème colored walls.

The boys were waiting for instructions or something to do that wouldn't involve thinking. Inuyasha, at the moment, had a headache from all the homework the teachers had already assigned even though it was only the first day.

Mr. Mojimi started speaking about what the class was about and what would be expected of them. Of course this was the signal for Inuyasha to tune him out. He looked around the gym. He didn't know anyone; all his old friends from elementary were in other classes. Kouga was now in science. He was still thinking about his classes when a rapid succession of thuds echoed in the room. Inuyasha looked and was faced with many, many red foam balls.

"Because today is the first day of school, the girls will be joining us for a game of dodge ball."

Widespread wonder filled the gym. The girls and boys had separate gyms and never interacted with one another; it was a treat, depending on whom you were, for the girls to join. Inuyasha's ears picked the small shouts of Yes and groans. He looked to the guy beside him, a boy about his height with midnight shaded hair and dark eyes. The boy pumped his fist upon hearing the news, his lavender colored Buddha bracelet jangling, and even Inuyasha could see the excitement in his eyes. Inuyasha his self didn't really care, it just meant he couldn't throw the ball as hard as he normally would have. He didn't mind hurting a boy but a girl was just not done.

The coach blew his whistle to signal for the students to be quiet and listen to him as he explained the stretches that they would be doing everyday. After showing them, the teacher paired them up saying it would help when they started doing stretches meant for two people. Of course, Inuyasha got paired up with the ecstatic Buddha boy; the teacher had said his name was Miroku.

As they stretched, Inuyasha couldn't help but look over to the boy who was still smiling like he had won something. "Why are you so happy?" Inuyasha couldn't help but asking.

"Why not? The girls are joining us today. Everything is great." He smiled.

Okay… "They are just girls. What you went to an all boy school or something?" Inuyasha asked.

Miroku nodded his head; "Yep and I'm just happy to be in a place that doesn't forget girls. Boys and girls are equal. You know equality is the key to happiness."

Inuyasha rolled his eyes at that line; "Sure." Was all he said. He had already decided Miroku was a strange boy.

~~

It was a glorious thing. The people, the shouting, the throwing. Screams and yells filled the gym and rang off the walls. It would have bothered Inuyasha's ears if he hadn't become accustomed to such noise so early in life. There were no bodies on the floor, but each end of the gym was filled with people who were now 'prisoners'. Inuyasha himself had yet to be taken down; dodging left and right ducking and moving behind people at will. Already 3 other people had taken a shot that was meant for him. Each side only had 15 people left, but Inuyasha had decided that already his team would win. It had nothing to do with the fact the winners got candy and popcorn.

He had picked up another spongy, smelly, dark red foam ball when another body from his team had fallen. He looked over and saw a girl sitting on her rear, rubbing her shoulder. Humans are so weak. They are sponge for kami sakes. He turned his attention back to the opposite team and spotted a boy pointing and laughing at the fallen girl. Without really knowing whither or not the boy had thrown the ball, Inuyasha had decided that it was that boy who was the culprit.

He centered his attention and let the ball go. Not only did the ball hit the guy, Inuyasha had targeted his stomach and not only was his aim good but also he had thrown it hard. Not to be mean but to just make sure he went down. He didn't collapse, but he did double over and Inuyasha could swear he could hear the kid groan.

The girl who had gotten hit was being pulled back up with the help from Miroku. Inuyasha had noticed this throughout the whole game. Miroku would throw a ball or two if need be but he would as soon as drop the ball and run over to a girl to give a helping hand.

~~

Inuyasha chomped on his popcorn. So his team had won and all thanks to him; he had given the winning shot and put down the last person. As he ate his popcorn his yes strayed over to the Miroku who was also eating his but giving even more to other girls from the opposite team. Really he didn't get it, they were just girls.

3 years later1996

Sango sighed. She was bored and very tired. It had been a very hard day so far. For some reason Kami had chosen her to forsake but not before cursing her with all the teachers from hell. Apparently, even though she was a freshman all the teachers were delusional and thought that all their students were geniuses. This would be nice and very encouraging if it was true.

Not only that but she had gotten lost to nearly all of her classes and it was only the middle of the day. Only 3 more classes Sango. You can do this. She was now in the long lunch line waiting to pay for disgusting and overpriced food. She scanned the cafeteria for a familiar face. She was new in school and knew no one. Well she had met someone in her geometry class and he had been nice enough to invite her to eat with him but she wasn't so sure.

Her parents had always warned her to stay away from demons. But it's not like I have anyone else to sit with. Kouga was a really nice sophomore in her geometry class; in fact way nicer than her parents had always said demons were. She had never really had to worry about being with demons; she was from a small town on the outskirts of Kyoto. There were practically no demons.

My friends and I always sit by the window. That's what he had said when he had invited her. She still wasn't sure if she wanted to but the closer she got to paying for her food the more better the invitation looked.

She was scanning the large room again when she spotted a boy with very silver hair over by one of the big windows. She had never met him and the only reason he had caught her attention from across the room was because of the color of his hair. But then she glanced at whom he was talking to and she felt a small wave of relief wash through her as she saw Kouga. I guess it's decided.

**

"You can't just invite every girl to our table Kouga." Inuyasha growled. He and Kouga were sitting at their usual seat by the window. Inuyasha liked sitting there because he felt less confined in the four white boring walls of the prison called school. He was angry right now though because he had just found out some new girl would be sitting with them.

"You know we may have something important to talk about." They tried not to talk about any of their criminal activities during school but lunch was fine. Now one sitting around them would be listening anyway. But talking about plans would be impossible with someone new around.

Kouga just shrugged "It's not like it can't wait till after school." Even though tonight would be the first job they would be doing he wasn't about to let it get in his way of picking up a pretty girl. "Inuyasha you have to look at her before you say anything. The girl is so pretty I just had to invite her over."

"Invite who?" Miroku asked as he sat down with his assortment junk food. Miroku refused to buy the overpriced food the school offered opting instead to buy food from the vending machines.

Kouga answered before Inuyasha could even open his mouth; "Oh man. I meet this girl in my geometry class and I just had to invite her over to eat with us."

Miroku's interest was instantly piqued, "What's her name?" he asked as he ripped open a bag a chips.

"Sango. She's a freshman. Just wait till you meet her before making a decision."

"That's no fair. Miroku already likes her remember you said you invited a girl." Inuyasha interjected with. "Besides she's just a freshman, she doesn't get how everything works."

"It's not like there's a lot to understand. I can easily make it my duty to help her understand." Miroku said.

"Hey at least Sango is in high school." Kouga spat out.

"What?" Inuyasha said defensively with his arms crossed.

"I saw you checking out that 8th grader across the street. What was her name? Oh yea… Kikyo. A little young don't you think Inuyasha?"

Inuyasha rolled his eyes; "I'm 15. She's 13. That's only 2 years."

Kouga butting in; "13! Have you no shame?" he said shaking his head but not even he could hide the amusement of the situation.

"At least what till she's in high school before you jump her." Miroku slipped in with a smile on his face.

Before Inuyasha could give him a proper retort or at least a bop on the head, a girl with short black hair was standing nervously by their table. She was pretty even Inuyasha had to admit that but he still didn't want her there, he would rather make sure the plan would work out tonight.

~~

The guys she was sitting with were nicer then she had expected. Sango just didn't know if that was good or not. Kouga was still being the talkative guy she had meet in Geometry; being really nice and even sharing a part of his brought home lunch with her after she tasted the meal the cafeteria had served her with.

The one named Miroku was almost too nice. He took upon his self to pull out her chair when she had stepped up to them. She had thought it odd, being so overtly nice to someone he had never meet before but she chalked it up to good manners. Now though she wasn't so sure. He was just as nice and talkative as Kouga. But everyone once and while she got the feeling that some of the things he said were more towards a sexual innuendo. And then he kept on humming some old song that Sango had a very hard time placing until it finally came to mind. It was a very old American song by a group she had forgotten about long ago called Color Me Badd; the song was called "I Wanna Sex You Up". She had no idea if he was just humming it cause he just was or if it was towards her. But other then that the dark violet eyed boy was very cute and sweet. She just didn't know if she would ever admit that to him; it would seem that it might go to his head.

Maybe she shouldn't have said they all were nice. Because the silver headed one who had caught her attention before was obvious in his desire for her to leave. It wasn't the fact that he was rude to her it was the vibe he was sending out to her. He barely looked at her and when he did it was to answer a question she asked with a one-word answer. Kouga had said to forgive him, that Inuyasha was part dog and not socialized very well as a child and that dogs that weren't properly integrated into society had antisocial problems later in life.

She did have fun at lunch though, and after Kouga invited her again she decided with a bunch of guys wasn't so bad in the end. Besides maybe she could figure out that Miroku one and why he seemed to have such strange fixations.

Two years later1998

Inuyasha sniffed the surrounding vicinity; it was a mix of dirt, trees and wild animals. He really didn't understand why Kikyo had chosen the forest to do this. Really to him, his room would have been fine. The sun was setting and looked like a broken egg among a bloody plate. The dying rays shot in between the leaves and trees causing a speckled lighting effect on the dirt floor.

He could see fine but he wasn't so sure about Kikyo. She may have been a miko but she wasn't demon. She was trailing behind him, looking around at the scenery and smelling some bright fuchsia colored flowers. He just rolled his eyes and walked back to speed her up.

Her long raven colored tresses swayed with the breeze and her movements. He couldn't smell anything close by but still he didn't like the feeling he was getting being in the woods almost at dark.

"I wish you hadn't taken so long getting ready." He said as he tromped along the forestry; he wasn't trying to go fast but it wasn't going slow either; either way Kikyo was tripping on pinecones and stomps.

"Sorry if my training was too long for you. It's not my fault, Jashin just wants me to be the best miko I can be." She retorted, her voice sounding a bit annoyed as she tripped yet again on another tree root. She just had to go to a certain spot right by the lake; which was, of course, in the middle of the forest.

"I know. It just seems like you're always practicing." The bag she was holding hit him again in the leg and with a snort he took it from her and threw it over his shoulder. It wasn't discovered until recently that his girlfriend happened to be a miko. And it wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that someone, Inuyasha suspected Kouga, had somehow found out and blabbed it to Ayame who in turn told her uncle, Jashin. It was exactly this reason that Inuyasha hadn't told anyone in the first place. he didn't want Kikyo's time being taken up by a gang.

after walking a few more yards, they finally came upon the lake that Kikyo had been so insistent about. The water was clear and shrouded from the last sunrays by tall trees and their leaves. The ground was soft and the grass lush as they sat down on the blue and white blanket produced from the bag Kikyo had brought.

As she set up the candles and concoctions she would need to complete the spell, Inuyasha couldn't help but start to rethink what they were about to do. She had said that he being a demon and she being a miko automatically put them against one another; that automatically they weren't meant to be together.

They were doing this binding spell, so they could. It wasn't a joining of their blood but of their auras. That her being wouldn't see him as a threat; as an attacker. He loved her, wanted to be with her. When she had brought it up he had agreed. He wanted to be with her, but now as he watched her pull out herbs he just didn't know how much he wanted this. She had found the spell in an old book her grandmother had, they didn't even know it worked. But what if it does?

"Are you ready?" she asked pulling him from his thoughts.

He looked up at her. Her eyes questioning and unsure, but her voice confident. He knew then that on the outside she may have been sure and ready but on the inside she was just as scared as he was. The sun had all but died and the candles she had lit caused a glow around her face. He remembered then just how much he loved her.

He smiled at her trying to calm her. If she wasn't feeling the same as he was maybe he would have been more willing to call it off; "Yea." He scooted closer to her; "I do want to be with you Kikyo."

She nodded in response; "This way we can be together Inuyasha. You'll have my life and I'll have yours."

A year and 6 months later1999

"WHY!" shouted Inuyasha in pure rage. Miroku grimaced at the question. He had known this wasn't going to work out but still somehow he had been the one chosen to get the news out.

"Because, Kouga is with Ayame. It's only right for him-"

"It. Doesn't. matter." The hanyou interrupted with; his voice cold and hard. Miroku could already see the twitch in his friend's cheek and once again was thankful that he had been smart enough to tell him on the phone. "I don't get it. Kouga? Jashin must have made a mistake." He went on saying.

Miroku shook his head even though he couldn't be seen; "He wants Kouga to take over for him. He feels he can do the best."

"Do the best? At what RUNNING? He never did anything!" Inuyasha shouted over the phone. Miroku took the earpiece away from his ear. Inuyasha's statement had been somewhat untrue since it was Kouga who now always found a person to hit and knew when things were going on, but the boy knew more then to mention it to the raving mad half-demon on the phone.

"It's not right. The Wolves won't last with that wimpy wolf in charge."

"Now Inuyasha is that really fair to your friend? We know Kouga won't let anything destroy something Ayame's family has tried so hard to build. Give him more credit." Miroku was trying very hard to keep calm and help Inuyasha. If the hanyou was still mad like this there was no way he could go to Jashin's final meeting. Jashin would pick up on this animosity and the man may have been old but he wasn't foolish enough to have anyone who wouldn't be loyal to the leader remain.

Inuyasha was quiet and Miroku could image his friend mulling over his words. The seconds ticked by as Miroku waited for Inuyasha's answer.

"Keh. I still think that wimpy wolf will bring them down." He snorted his answer and ended with a small growl.

Miroku sighed in relief and thanked Buddha; "Fine Inuyasha think that. But please be smart enough not to speak that while anywhere near anyone in the Wolves."

this whole thing was really a big overview of things. I didn't talk about his parents because that'll be in the next chapter. Sorry about this taking so long but it's long so I hope you forgive me. I have 2 more chapters about their dates and then on to the turning point. I'll try to get the next out quicker.

I did changed one thing in the beginning chapters went I reposted and that was I made all demons age just like humans. Had too or else this chapter wouldn't have worked.

I hope none had any questions concerning the last chapter if you did just repost and I'll answer next time.

Read and review plz it would be greatly appreciated.
