To Live Like a Demon
prologue
~At midnight in the demon village of Sakamara~
A bright full moon reflected off red pools. The scent of blood tinged the air and the ground was painted red. The many bodies of innocent dog demons were scattered everywhere. The village of Sakamara was in peril. Every inhabitant in it was going to die if it was not dead already, unless they could somehow leave the area without being traced, which was impossible.
In the silence of the night a baby cried out, but was silenced by its mother when she put a finger over the young demon girls' lips, and was cradled lovingly in her mothers' arms. The woman knew what she had to do to save her only child. She rocked the little girl to sleep and wrapped her in blankets. Tonight, the woman knew she would die yet she would risk anything to save her baby.
Silently and gracefully the woman left the decayed scene of her village into the forest as she swept off her feet into the trees. Her only destination was to a human village over the mountain. She would leave her baby there to be raised by the only human she trusted, Sameya. Although the woman was old, she was completely trustworthy in the eyes of the woman. She knew Sameya would be the only person suited to raise her child after her death.
When she arrived at her destination, the woman placed a kiss on each temple on her child's face. "I will always love you, Akara, and you have to understand that this is the best thing for you, and me," she whispered as she set the sleeping baby on the porch of an old wood cabin. She smiled at her child and silently left the village, only looking back once with a tear filled face to look at what she had left behind. The woman could no longer hold her tears back. She freely let them roll down her face as she fled the village.
Again, the woman took to the trees as she jumped from one another into the middle of the forest awaiting her death. When the woman was far away from it all, she lay down at the base of a tree on a bed of leaves to cry. The moonlight hit off her dark brown hair and her tear-struck face. There was no noise except for the wind.
A break of a twig from out in the darkness symbolized the end to her short life. She lay still in the leaves, waiting for her attackers to come upon her. Soon, out of the shade of the trees, two male figures walked towards her and drew their swords. It was the end. When they were within five feet of the woman they made an attack.
Blood shot out across the ground as the attackers sliced her into pieces. The woman died silently without screaming or flinching. All she knew was that her baby was safe, at least. The attackers then fled the scene, knowing their job had been fulfilled. They ran all the way back to their hideout in the mountains. There, they celebrated their success.
Now, almost the whole race of the dog demons in the country was gone, all except for Akara, the baby. Although there were dog demons in far regions of the world, she would not know of them for, maybe, her whole life. Now all the baby had to worry about was sleep. Akara was still too young to understand the tragedies of war. The baby slept the night away and was only awoken by the sun hitting her face and a woman picking her up and bringing her inside.
~The human village 16 years later~
Akara woke to another day in the cabin that she had been living in for all her life. Today was her birthday, and she was turning sixteen. The young woman slowly and sleepily crawled out from under her covers and out of her bed. She crept over to a medium sized wooden box, in which she kept all of her belongings. Sunlight filled the room, making her warm. Akara took a wooden comb from the top of her box and started combing her dark brown tresses. And yet again, she snagged her ear.
"Ow," she muttered. This was not the first day this had happened. Akara was different from all the other girls in her village. She knew that her parents were not from around, yet she did not understand how come she had to be so different. Although very beautiful, she was a demon and not aware of it. The elderly lady she had grown up with had kept her identity of being demon a secret from her.
Akara looked into the mirror that hung on the wall as she did so often. Her dark brown hair came down to the end of her shoulder blades and curled in at the ends. At the top of her head two brown doggie ears stuck out. A pair of big hazel eyes stared back at her and a small fang managed to poke out of her mouth pointing down. Akara had fair skin and an hourglass shaped body. Claws grew from her finger, and she did a pretty well job of keeping those in, so she wouldn't harm anybody. Although she was in fact very beautiful, Akara could only see how different she was from everybody else.
After finishing combing through her hair, the young woman decided to get dressed. She slid off the lid of the box revealing her cloths. Looking through them, she decided to wear a plain dark blue kimono. After sliding off her white sleeping gown, she put on her choice of clothing and walked toward the door that led to the main room of the small cabin.
Sitting in a corner of the room was Sameya, the elderly lady who had taken care of Akara since her parents had died. A stern look spread across the usually happy and loving woman deepening her wrinkles. Her long silver hair was swept back in a loose ponytail and she was in her usual outfit: a red mail-shirt and black baggy pants. Usually, this is what Akara would wear only she was instructed the night before that she should dress nicely for her birthday.
