To Perish Once More: Chapter Four: Midnight

Ramen. Food of the gods, really.

Though, it has been almost two weeks since she returned to my side with her era's treats and delights.

Of course, Ramen isn't the only great thing about Kagome.

Damn if it ain't a great start.

His sigh of contentment echoed in the quiet forest. There lay all his friends sleeping while he took second watch. Watch switched a few hours prior to dawn.

He reasoned the truth of his desire to stay steadfastly awake in these darkest of hours. He knew - all the reasons.

He had to. Needed to. Wanted to.

Ah, shit.

He loved to.

He loved protecting her in the deep dark of night fall.

His gaze sought out the heavens. His star. His lucky star...had fallen to his world. She was bright. Beautiful. One in a billion.

Her smile was often for him - and him alone, he knew now. Use to be that he was practically was a blind sighted rock-headed…jerk…when it came to her thoughts. Now, he nearly could figure out her stray, odd thoughts. Truth was, he couldn't help but be interested.

'Overachiever,' he grumbled inaudibly to the skies.

Truth be told, she was the entire reason for his existence. His lungs suffocated his breath from him when he observed the quiet rise and fall of her chest. She had given him quite a scare the last few times she wandered into the Feudal Era. Danger lurked everywhere.

Damn if he couldn't talk sense into that thick head of hers. Damn that stupid wolf from not being able to do much the same. Exasperated, he rolled on to his spine, facing the treetops.

Loyal to a fault.

Gods, I can't keep my mind from straying far from her.

What was he going to do when this was over? His heart broke thinking on it. His head ached from the strain and stress of fruitless searching for the last several weeks. Something was going to happen. Something bad...something good - he couldn't decide what.

Well, regardless of the future - near or far - she is definitely good.

She is kind. I do trust her...although, she does have quite the temper. Guess I'll never figure out that part of her. I've tried, but then, like Miroku says, she is a woman...impossible at best. She worries me though. Hasn't sat me the last fortnight.

Can't know what to do with her 'til everything is right with that cursed Jewel.

And that was yet another thing.

The Jewel.

He knew Kagome would trust him with that Shikon Glass Ball - as she liked to call it. He knew what Kikyo had wanted while living. Kagome was a mystery though. She actually liked him for all that he was. That was what confused him though. His ears pricked at the next thought.

Am I what she wants...the way she wants me? Do I dare hope? Really and trully? Would she genuinely want...this me?

Of course, he had heard her undying belief in him before - especially when faced-off with a difficult foe - declaring her faith in his strength to protect the whims of this age from attacking her.

She would.

The only thing I could never protect her from is my own shame. I love....

He didn't let himself finish the thought.

'Tomorrow night is the new moon.'

At least in my human form there's no confusion as to the priceless pearl that she is to me. I know who I want when I'm near her that way.

I'll think on it tomorrow.

Crossing his hands behind his head, his eyes searched for her face...in his dreams. Everyone was safe for now. No person, no demon...hell, no half-demon was near their camping vicinity for at least a ten mile radius. It would be quite a surprise if he didn't hear or scent anything, since the night air was clear and calm. No strange winds shifting.

At least there was a mild breeze this evening. Kagome looked a little distraught earlier in the day when the sun was midday high and scorching mercilessly on his companions. He would give her that...the temperature today - tonight - was certainly a bitch.

With all my heart...what will I do? What will we do, Kagome?

With that thought, his eyes fluttered shut, while he allowed his ears to scope out the camped region.

What I wouldn't give for you....
