To Perish Once More: Chapter Twelve: Zhipei

"Keep the shard," an unfamiliar voice was saying.

Something went wrong.

He wasn't supposed to roll over.

Then, he remembered his own petrified request to the demon lord. He intended to state his affairs as the lord commanded, but Kagura's reprimand stilled his tongue and all irrelevant thoughts congested his mind. Then, there was Kirara…his mouth had flown open and gushed forth the torment of his soul.

Kirara!

That means Sister…

His head jerked up searching the intimate crowd for her face.

Rin.

He came here to visit Rin.

Speechless, he sat up as the girl stood and side stepped her protector. Sango leapt toward him and crushed him with a hug.

…uhgf, mushy hugs and sisters...

Yet, he was glad.

"What happened?"

"Kohaku! I was afraid for you!"

Sango.

Her weeping was an ocean of bitter sweet love. He knew her love. Was he forgiven? He didn't know, but her tears meant she worried for him still.

"Sesshoumaru used Tenseiga." That was the voice he didn't recognize.

Tenseiga? What is Tenseiga?

Standing to face the lord, he glanced over at Kagura. Her expression was nothing short of astonished. In her hand was held his Shikon jewel shard.

His life had been spared and there was no blood on anyone's hands.

Grateful…I should be grateful.

He finally deciphered the mystery of Tenseiga.

I didn't know…

Dare he raise his face to his savior?

He can raise the dead?

Sango's joy was eminent as her hug tightened around his shoulders.

She loves me.

He could do everything his heart desired today…

"Milord?" He stuttered.

Oh yes, the green toad.

I forgot about him…

"Milord…what will you do now, milord?" the lesser demon asked.

"Jaken."

So that's his name.

"Let him do as he wishes."

"Ye-yes, master - milord!"

His deliverance come, was parting?

Why?

"You're safe, Kohaku." Sango eased her embrace. Her sobs were trickling away.

"Th-there's a woman - the one you travel with - that I need to talk to." He swallowed all his reasons. Maybe forgiveness would calm his heart.

"Oh?" She sighed. It certainly wasn't his version of a great reunion.

Too bad, really.

"Kagome?" She already stood ready to support her friend…his sister.

She leveled her eyes to match his. He wasn't ready for this.

…but I have to finish this.

One more day of the guilt would suffocate him.

Kagura's grip around the jewel shard tightened.

The demon lord paused.

Bowing his face to the ground, he lowered him self to his knees and positioned his palms downward.

"Forgive me."

The tears restrained during his captivity shamelessly fell. He was remorse for the crimes he unwillingly committed. His most passionate craving above the end of evil and the love of Sango was the priestess's forgiveness. On behalf of all the people that perished of his account, he sought her forgiveness.

She must.

She is a priestess.

I will die without it.

Not that I deserve less than death as my penalty.

Dusk was approaching.

Please…

He chanced a glance at her. She was on her knees pulling out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from his brow.

"Remember the good times."

What did that mean?

"Make some new ones...and put Naraku's control behind you."

I will.

I will. I will…

"Forgive me, p-pu-please!" He was still sobbing.

"Of course."

I promise, I will.

He stood his ground and took his place with Lord Sesshoumaru.
