Kikyo kicked open the door and stormed down the hall in a fit of rage. Sango poked her head out of Kagome’s room and blinked, oh boy… That can’t be good…
She was pacing in front of the door when Kagome opened it with tears rolling down her cheeks. “Kagome?” Sango asked pulling the hurt girl into her arms. Kagome shook her head. “He refused to let me and Mistress got angry and left.” Sango took a deep breath. “Then why are you crying and what happened to that night gown?” Kagome pulled Sango into her room and threw on a pair of shorts and sweats as well as a tank top and a t-shirt. Back to the layers. Sango thought as she sat down on Kagome’s bed. “InuYasha thinks I tortured the other prisoners. He all but called me a whore.” She said broken heartedly as she joined Sango on her bed. “What!? Why?!” Rage fueled Sango and she stood, heading to the dungeon. “No, Sango! Don’t! He already hates me.” Sango folded her arms across her chest. “Did you tell him about Roark?” Kagome’s tortured gaze met Sango’s as she brought up the one name that tore at her heart. She shook her head unable to speak through the tears. “Well, I will.” Kagome jumped up and blocked the door. “No! Look he doesn’t need to know anything about me; just leave him alone.” She said quietly. Sango tilted her head and looked at her sideways. “Kagome I don’t like this.” Kagome retaliated with a smile and sat on the bed. “It’s okay.” She pulled the covers down and crawled in. “Good night Sango.” She flipped the light off and rolled over, “night.” Sango muttered. She left Kagome’s room and headed to the dungeon. Whether she likes it or not InuYasha needs to understand.
InuYasha watched her warily as she stepped into the light, storming over and slamming him into the wall. “Let me explain a little something to you about Kagome Higurashi. She’s a good person, a great person! You have no right to talk to her like you did. She told me that you all but called her a whore and lookie here buddy boy, she isn’t.” InuYasha stared at Sango and blinked several times. “Uh…?” Sango shook her head and interrupted him by continuing, “you think you have her all figured out? Well, let me tell you a story, one she would kill me for but you need to know! There was once a hanyou infant named Roark. He was beautiful and innocent. Black hair and green eyes, round chubby cheeks, adorable!” Sango’s eyes grew distant and filled with sorrow. “He stayed with us for three years; the first two were spent in Kagome’s room. She had a little nursery sat up for him. Mistress didn’t like it so on his third birthday she made Kagome lock him in the dungeon. Kagome wanted to adopt him. She would stay down here and sleep with him so he wouldn’t get cold. She’d smuggle extra food out of meals for him and gave him cloths to wear.” Her gaze sharpened and returned to the hanyou, “she loved that boy InuYasha. As she would her own son, she loved him. She called him Roark Higurashi all the time. You know what happened to that boy?” InuYasha had a feeling he really didn’t want to know but found himself whispering, “what?” Kagome stepped into the light, “I made the mistake of asking Master Naraku to let me adopt him. Begged really,” they both jumped and looked at her in shock. “He flew into a rage and…” Tears began to stream down her face as she balled her fist to her chest and looked at the rusted chains beside InuYasha. “Master killed him.” Sango supplied. InuYasha’s jaw fell. Open mouth insert foot seems to be becoming my catch phrase with this girl! He thought, hating himself for miss-judging Kagome so badly.
“Kagome…” He whispered quietly feeling his heart bleed for her. “Who else? What happened Kagome, I’m sorry I didn’t listen but what happened?” Her eyes never left the chains and Sango sighed. “A lot. InuYasha this place is a horror house and we apparently have front row season passes.” Kagome nodded as Sango explained. He swallowed hard, “Kagome…” She looked up from the chains. Her eyes were so full of pain and memories he opened his arms and stepped forward as far as the chain on his foot would allow. She took several steps to him before falling into his chest. His arms tightened around her as she cried brokenly. “Kagome I’m sorry.” He whispered as he kissed her head several times. Sango laid her hand on Kagome’s back, rubbing small circles to comfort the girl before taking her in her arms and leading her upstairs. Inuyasha looked over at the monk who had come down during Kagome’s story and growled, “we have to escape.” Miroku sighed heavily and met his gaze. “You think we haven’t tried? This place is worse than a concentration camp. There may be only one demon living in the castle but he seems to know every move we make.” Inuyasha sat down, Kagome’s sobs still ringing in his ears and the scent of her tears burning his nose. “We have to Miroku. Not just for my sake.” He looked to the stair case and the monk understood his unspoken meaning. “Agreed.” He finally said.
