Chapter 1: Departure
`My last year.' Inuyasha said to himself as he slammed his locker and jogged to the parking lot to meet his girlfriend of four years, Kikyou. They were going to celebrate their anniversary today by spending the rest of the day that school hadn't already stolen.
“Inuyasha! Hey baby. You ready to go? I'm starving, I skipped lunch.” Kikyou rushed Inuyasha into the car and drove out of the school parking lot. Kikyou was speeding down the highway. It was a pretty nice sunny day in southern California. Everything was so bright. Her long black hair slipped out of the ribbon she used to tie it into a ponytail, and blowing gently against her creamy face. Inuyasha just stared at her. His hair was driving him mad, he had talked about cutting it, but Kikyou made him promise not to. It was long and silver, he kept it in a high ponytail, but the ends kept whipping him on the cheeks.
“Hey, slow down, the food's not going anywhere. Besides there's something I wanna…need to talk to you about.” Inuyasha looked and her and gave her a crooked smile.
“What is it that you wanna tell me?” Kikyou asked giggly and excitedly. `Is he gonna propose!' she turned and smiled at him widely. Inuyasha pointed at the road and she quickly returned her attention to it. The rest of the drive was in silence. Inuyasha was deciding on how to ask her and how to tell her. And she was daydreaming about him proposing to her.
They arrived at the restaurant about fifteen minutes later. Kikyou parked, and they walked in hand inside hand. It was pretty empty and they were seated immediately. The restaurant was a pale peach colour with candles, flowers and other plant life decorating the walls. The tables were small and simple with a tall candle in the center and wine glasses opposite each other. They were sat at one of these tables. They had saved for a month to eat here and considering it was a Friday, they also got a hotel room for the night. `Should I propose to her first, or tell her the news first?' Inuyasha wondered. He decided to tell her the news. He pulled an envelope out of his pocket and placed on the table in front of Kikyou. She stared at him and then the letter about three times before questioning what it was for. “Read it.” Inuyasha responded
Kikyou nodded her head and proceeded to read,
“Tokyo U! You got in!!!!! Ahhhhhh!!! I'm so happy for you baby!” she screamed with joy and hugged him. “It's been your dream to go there! And now you get to go!!” she kissed him. The small amount of people that were in the restaurant stared for a short period of time and then continued with their own business. “That's not the only thing I've got to tell you…” Inuyasha whispered. Kikyou let go of him almost immediately and returned to her seat. She stared as if she could see through him, and then she waited. The waiter came and she told her to come back in five minutes.
“What do you mean?” she asked while giving him a glare/ sympathy look. Inuyasha took a deep breath and looked deep into her eyes, grabbed her hands and began to tell her.
“Baby, I have to leave. Ill have to go to Japan, and stay for my major. But I don't want to go, I want to stay here, with you.”
“Why can't I just come with you?”
“Because you've already been accepted to five colleges, to have you come with me wouldn't really be fair. Id be robbing you of a future.”
“But if you do the same it would be the same thing only backwards.”
“Yeah, I know.”
There was a long pause, the waiter returned and they ordered their drinks
“Inuyasha, I don't want you to go, I want you to stay here with me.”
“I know I want to too”
“Let me finish, I want you to do what you've always wanted”
She squeezed his hand and smiled at him.
“Yeah, but what about you, us?”
“I guess this will be our last few months together huh?”
“Maybe not…” Inuyasha got down on his knee in front of her and pulled out a small box. Kikyou gasped and a tear fell down her cheek.
“Oh my god!” Kikyou said as if she had just run a marathon.
“Kikyou, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
“Oh my god! YES! YES I WILL!”
After he slipped the ring onto her finger, she leaped out of her seat and knocked him onto the floor, kissing him. After realizing what she did, Kikyou quickly rose up off the ground, helped Inuyasha get back on his feet and straightened her clothes before sitting down again. Inuyasha began to explain things.
“We have two months before I either leave or stay in august. And if I do…” Kikyou cut him off.
“No, when you do. I want you to go, ill wait for you no matter how long it takes” she smiled at him
“Really are you sure?”
“Yeah, and besides, now when I look at my hand I can think of you.”
They kissed again and everything began to blur. Inuyasha shook his head and blinked his eyes. He was in the airport with Kikyou by his side. Sitting in one of those uncomfortable plastic chairs at the gate number. `I hope everything stays as we planned it.' Inuyasha thought. He took his plane ticket out of his bag;
Tokyo, Japan- Gate b12- flight number: 560 Departure: 7:30pm Arrival: 8:45am
Of course he couldn't forget about the stop in Hawaii, and from there Japan. He and Kikyou sat together talking knowing it was going to be years before they would see each other again.
“Please Inuyasha promise me that you'll at least write or call once a week. I'm gonna miss you so much.”
“I promise, as long as you do the same.” He smiled at her
[Flight 560, to Hawaii, now boarding.]
They looked into each other's eyes as it were the last time. Tears began to swell in Kikyou's eyes. They hugged for what seemed like forever. They let go holding hands. Inuyasha picked up his carry-on bag, told Kikyou that he loved her.
“Kikyou, I love you, I PROMISE I'll come back as soon as I can.” Inuyasha told her while touching her face with his hands. Kikyou placed her hand over his
“I love you too. And I promise that ill be waiting until you get back.”
He kissed one last time and ran up to the counter to have the woman check his ticket. Inuyasha turned around and waved to Kikyou as he slowly disappeared into the small tunnel. Kikyou waited until the plane took off before she could bring herself to leave and go home.
Inuyasha was sitting in his seat observing all the people around him. He looked at the plane when it took off and he was finally in the air. All he could see was clear blue water.
“Japan, here I come…”
