Chapter 12: A Heart That Bears the World

~*~*~ Kaggies Still~*~*~

The ambulance pulled in to the driveway about ten minutes after I had called them. That was pretty fast service, but I didn't have time to think about that. I allowed them to put Inuyasha on a stretcher as I watched helplessly. They told me I couldn't go with him in the ambulance because I wasn't family. I begged and pleaded but they still said no. Once Inuyasha was in the ambulance I went back over to my house.

My mother got home about six and I told her what happened. She said we could go and visit him as soon as he was feeling better.

"How will we know when he is feeling better if we don't go check on him?" I asked, getting a little upset that she wasn't more panicky.

"Tai will tell us of course. He knows doesn't he?"

"I don't know! I was the only one around when I found him two inches from dead in his room!" I shouted, getting visibly angry.

"Don't you back sass me!" she went to the refrigerator and took out a soda.

I inwardly growled and bit my tongue, walking back to my room before I got myself grounded. I called the hospital on my cell phone but they said he couldn't accept calls yet. I would have to wait.

~*~*~ Inu's POV ~*~*~

I couldn't tell what was going on. Everything was fuzzy and I felt so disoriented. I was lying on the floor in the living room, and I didn't want to stay there, so I practically crawled up the stairs to my room. I fell down, grabbing the lamp, thinking that would stop my fall. The lamp shattered and everything else seemed very surreal. I had heard knocking, and I tried to answer but my voice wouldn't come out. The next thing I remember was Kagome hovering over me, and telling me it was going to be okay. What was going to be okay? I didn't feel like anything was wrong. After that I blanked out.

I woke up in the hospital. I looked around not sure what was going on. My body told me I was hurt, but my mind was shut down and completely in the dark. I heard nurses and doctors talking outside my room and I closed my eyes, going back to sleep.

~*~*~Kagie's POV ~*~*~

I woke up on Thanksgiving morning, still in a terribly pissy mood. I walked into the kitchen where my mother was already busy making Thanksgiving dinner. She seemed to be making her infamous, from scratch, rolls. I walked over to the counter, where apples were already set out for me. I began peeling and slicing them. It was tradition that I always bake the apple pie. So, without a word, that is what I did.

Tai came over around four, with a bottle of champagne for my mother, and we finished all of our preparations for the meal by five and we all sat down at the table.

My mother is one for tradition, for the most part, so she opened with. "I'd like to go around and say one thing we are all thankful for this Thanksgiving."

"Lovely idea." Tai agreed.

"Okay, I'll start then, if that's okay." My mother said. We nodded. "I am thankful for my family and new friends." she rose her champagne glass.

"I am thankful for new friends as well." Tai agreed as he too rose his glass.

"I am glad for friends like Inuyasha, who would never leave me alone, or hurt me. I am thankful that I finally feel accepted, and that my new friends are more like family." I looked pointedly at my mother, as though trying to guilt her into letting me see Inuyasha.

"Cheers." she said, as we all drank from our glasses (mine of course being kool aid).

We had many courses to work through and as I picked at my food I debated asking the question that was bothering me most of all.

"Mom?" I asked, once her and Tai had finally stopped talking.

"Yes?" she questioned back, taking a dainty bite of mashed potatoes.

"Can we go and visit Inuyasha?"

"No." she said firmly.

"But mom, it's Thanksgiving. I don't think he should be alone on a holiday. Actually I don't think he should be alone at all but whatever." I muttered the last sentence so I didn't get myself into trouble.

"Kagome, it is a family holiday. We are going to spend it together." she replied just as evenly.

"But Mom, shouldn't Inuyasha have some company too? It's still a holiday in the hospital."

"Kagome -"

"Then can I borrow the car?" I asked, desperately trying to get out of the house and make sure Inuyasha really was okay. The hospital still wasn't letting him take calls.

"No. We are going to stay together as a family on this holiday."

"Besides, visiting hours are over Kagome." Tai brought up.

"But you're his father. You can see him anytime you want. Just say we're with you." I suggested.

"Kagome-" my mother said. Her tone was that of 'If you make one more excuse or say 'but' one more time you're grounded'.

"Fine." I sat through desert and cleared the table. My mother told me I could be excused and I went to my room.

I turned on my CD player, an advertisement was on the radio, and I wrote a note. - Mom, went to see Yash. Don't know when I'll be home. Kags - I opened the window and jumped out, closing the window from the other side.

I went over to Inuyasha's car - with the intent of taking it. I got in and looked down at the shifter. It was a standard.

"Shit." I mumbled. I got out of his car and went down the driveway. “After all the times I’ve ridden with him, you would think I would have noticed!” I spat angrily to myself.

I knew Biddeford Hospital was farther than I realized, but I didn't care at this point. I wanted to make sure Inuyasha was okay and the world seemed to be against me. None of our other friends knew he was even in the hospital, so I didn't want to drag them into this. So I walked.

I decided to go through the port and down Log Cabin Road, rather than go all the way up through town and back down around. It wasn't that long of a walk.

Or so I thought.

I got to about the center of LCR when I felt a small drip of water on my face. I looked up and at that moment the rain started. I was trapped in a torrential down pour. I cursed out loud and continued walking. I was almost there anyway, only another twenty-five minutes (by car).

I heard nothing but rain around me until a car horn honking caught my attention. I looked and noticed it was an elderly gentleman and apparently his wife. I watched as he rolled down the window.

"Are you okay Miss?" he asked. His voice was deep and soothing.

"I'm doing lovely." I said, putting on my best 'happy face'.

"Would you like a ride somewhere?" his wife asked. She seemed like a wonderful person as well.

"Where are you headed?" I asked. Taking rides from strangers was completely against everything I stood for. But . . . it was raining.

"Just up to Shaws in Biddeford." the man said.

"Perfect." I smiled. That would mean I'd only have to walk another half a mile or so. "I'd love one."

~*

The man dropped me off before he turned into the Shaws plaza. "Happy Thanksgiving" I waved as he replied the same and drove away. I then set off to the hospital. It was still raining rather hard, but I was much closer now, and much happier that I didn't have to walk so far.

I entered the hospital and looked around. I had never been here before so it was kind of interesting to look at the decorations. (I only knew how to get there because I had driven by it a bunch of times). I walked up to the front desk and smiled at the woman behind it.

"Hello miss. May I help you?" she asked. She had quite the southern drawl and I figured she was probably new.

"Umm, yes, I'm here to see Inuyasha Watashi." I smiled as sweetly and as best I could.

"Okay," she looked in her directory. "Are you a family member?" I glanced over to the visiting chart 'Visiting hours from 12-6 on Thanksgiving Day'. According to the clock on the wall it was nearly eight.

"Yep. I'm his sister." I smiled cheerfully.

"Oh, lovely. He needs some company on the holidays." she looked in her computer, I assumed for his room number. "Okay, he is on the second floor, room two thirteen dear."

"Thank you." I smiled as she buzzed me into the hallway. I went up the elevator (a little sick of walking), and to the second floor.

I hated the smell of hospitals. I could never tell if it was the sterilization, or the sick people. Hospitals freaked me out more than cemeteries. I walked down the hallway and started looking at the numbers, finally finding 213 with the name 'Watashi' by the door.

"Inuyasha?" I asked softly, as I knocked on the door, which already stood ajar. He didn't seem to have a roommate so I walked in and to his bed.

He appeared to be sleeping. I smiled and noticed his heart monitor was steady and he seemed okay. I sat down beside his bed and held his hand. I don't know how long we stayed like that; him sleeping as I gazed at him, gently holding his hand. Before I knew it I felt him stir. I snapped back to reality and watched his eyes open lazily.

"Hi." I whispered, not sure if he could fully comprehend my presence.

"Kags?" he asked, his voice seemed strained.

"Yeah Yash, it's me." My voice was cracking as I began to cry. I hadn't realized how scared I was that he wasn't going to be okay.

"What - Where -W"

"Shh, you don't have to talk Yash. I just wanted to make sure you were okay." I explained.

He made a small noise, almost like a sound of agreement. "Thanks." he forced out.

"No probs. I worry about ya kid." I laughed, trying to lighten the mood.

"I'm tough as nails" he tried to laugh, but as he laughed he coughed.

"You should rest Yash." I gently touched his face, trying to comfort him back to sleep, like a mother would to a sick child.

"Promise, promise you'll be here, when I wake up?" I didn't know how to react to that. I couldn't be out forever, but I couldn't just leave him alone.

"I promise Yash." I kissed his forehead.

~*~

I fell asleep around eleven. My head rested on the edge of Inuyasha's bed, my forearm my only pillow. I was hunched over and would have terrible back pain in the morning. But I didn't care about that. I was tired, cold, damp, and worried. The physical exhaustion set in.

~*~ Yash's POV ~*~*

I woke up, the sun was shinning, cars were bustling by, people were chattering outside my room. Everything was normal. Except that I was in the hospital, and Kagome was sleeping on the edge of my bed. I realized that someone was holding my hand before my eyes actually focused on the person doing said action. I figured out it was Kagome, and the brief conversation we had had the night before. A small smile hit me as she began to wake up too.

"Oh." she looked at me startled. "Morning." She smiled. "Told you I would be here when you woke up."

"How did you get to stay so long? Visiting hours."

"I told them I was your sister." she smiled, apparently pleased with the white lie. I was thrilled.

"Awesome." I said. "You're wet." I noticed.

"Yeah. I'm still a little damp." She said, looking at her hair and her clothes.

"Why?"

"I walked here."

"What?!" I used most of my energy to raise my voice louder than a whisper.

"Calm down. I got to the LC road and a nice old couple gave me a ride to like Shaws. I only really had to walk a couple miles total." she explained. "I asked mom for the car and she was being a bitch. Then your dad wouldn't take me. So I was going to take your car, but it's a stick. So, I walked."

"You're crazy." I mumbled. I couldn't help but feel happy though, that she walked to see me.

"Whatever."

"Good Morning Inuyasha." The nurse smiled as she walked in with my breakfast and pain meds.

"Morning Linda. What've we got today." I tried smiling.

"Mmm, apple juice, some crushed up fruit, and Jell-O™." she smiled. "Doctor doesn't want you to eat solids. Your throat might not be able to handle the activity yet. Okay?" she continued to smile as she set the food on the tray attached to my bed. She looked at my readings, making notes and looked to Kagome.

"Well good morning. Who's this?" she asked.

"I'm Kagome."

"Girlfriend?" she asked with a knowing look.

"How did you know?" Kagome asked, almost muttering so as not to be heard.

"Intuition. Anyone asks, I know nothing, and you're his sister." Linda smiled, setting down a spoon. "Need anything give me a ring."

"Thanks Linda."

"Linda?" Kagome raised an eyebrow. "How familiar."

"Shut up." I said jokingly back to her.

"Need some help eating?" she asked me, probably noticing my right, dominant, arm was in a brace.

"Nah. I think I can manage. Even though I'm not really allowed to bend my ribs because the doctor says some of them are cracked. I'll be okay though."

"Allow me." Kagome took the spoon up and looked at the tray. "Fruit or Jell-O?" she asked.

"Jell-O." she spooned up a small bit and waved the spoon toward me.

"Choo choo, choo choo. Chugachuga chugachuga, choo choo." she repeated as she moved the spoon toward my mouth.

"Okay, no sound affects please." I said, trying not to laugh.

"Sorry." she smiled, gently putting the spoon in my mouth.

It felt really awkward to have my girlfriend feeding me. It was a killer to my pride and ego too. But, what are you going to do?

~*~ Kaggies POV ~~*()*)(*)(~*)(*&)~

I sat with Inuyasha most of the day. He was talking better, and he seemed to be generally okay. I didn't expect him home anytime soon though; he had way too many injuries to leave the hospital. Half the day was gone; it was about two in the afternoon before we even realized we had been visiting so long.

"Time to take your blood pressure." Linda came back in and smiled. "It must be so nice to have a sister who will sit with you all day Inuyasha." she winked at me and I smiled slightly.

"Yeah it is. Not nearly as boring as yesterday." he smiled.

"What are you talking about? You were out most of the day." Linda said with a smirk.

"That's how bored I was."

"Great blood pressure Yash. Good readings. You're doing fabulous. I will be back around six with your dinner."

"Thanks Linda."

We sat in silence for a few minutes, watching the television. When the next set of commercials came on Inuyasha looked over at me.

"You should go home." He said. "Your mom is probably upset you were gone so long."

"I don't even know if she knows." I said with guilt; he gave me a questionable look. "I didn't really tell her I was going. I went to my room, turned my CD player on, left a note and snuck out the window." I explained.

"Kags . . ." he seemed distressed.

"How else was I going to make sure you were okay? The nurses and doctors wouldn't let you take calls. The ambulance people wouldn't let me go with you because you weren't family and my own mother wouldn't take me or let me take the car. What else was I going to do?"

"Wait till I came home?" he asked.

"I couldn't."

"Kagome!" I looked over suddenly. My mother had burst through the door and ran up to me in a gripping hug. "I was so scared I thought you had died! NEVER EVER DO THAT TO ME AGAIN! EVER!"

"I'm sorry." I didn't know what else to say. I was probably grounded until I turned eighteen, but that was okay.

"Inuyasha dear, how are you?" she asked, changing her attitude entirely.

"I'm okay, I think." he smiled.

"Good." I noticed Inuyasha's father was in the door. Though he didn't seem to be keen on entering the room.

My mother and Tai sat down and we all talked for a little while until another nurse, not Linda, came in and informed us that visiting hours were over.

"Come on then Kagome." my mother took my hand in hers and forced me to stand. Which actually felt nice, since I'd been sitting most of the day.

"I'll check on ya tomorrow Inuyasha." Tai said as he left the room.

"Good bye Inuyasha." My mother smiled sweetly.

I looked at Yash; I was still holding his hand. I reluctantly let go. "Bye." I whispered as I was practically dragged out the door.

~*~*~

I was standing in the living room, waiting. I was waiting for her to yell at me, ground me, anything. But she was bustling about the house as though we had just got home from the park. The tension I was feeling was driving me crazy. She was either biding her time or she didn't really care. The later seemed much too far-fetched.

"Mom, could you ground me and get it over with?" I asked, becoming quite impatient.

"That was quite a stunt you pulled. Walking up to the hospital." she said, still not stopping to look at me.

"I'm sorry. I couldn't sit around at home, not knowing that he was okay." I explained. "So ground me. Yell at me. Do something."

"I'm not going to yell Kagome, or ground you." I looked at her skeptically.

"Then what-"

"Nothing. I would have done the same thing. I would have stopped at nothing to make sure one of my friends were okay, and I admire your determination; because, it reminds me of my own. Therefore, I would be a hypocrite if I grounded you, wouldn't I?"

"Umm, sure." I agreed for sake of argument.

"Lets just let this be the last time, something like this happens." she looked at me. This time pointedly and very stern.

"Yes. Last time." I smiled and left the room, fearing she would change her mind.

~*~*~* Yash. ~*~*~*~

I was in the hospital until Sunday afternoon. My 'dad' (and I use the term lightly) came and got me, surprisingly, and we drove home. I didn't say a word to him on the way home. It was his fault after all that I was in this position. I was on crutches (they had tried to give me a wheel chair because of my broken arm too, but I pleaded for just crutches). I had my arm in a cast, and I could barely swallow anything because my throat would constrict against the command.

I was greeted at home by Kagome. She came running out of her house to help me.

"Yash! I'm so glad your home! Can you go to school tomorrow? Are you doing okay? Need some help?" I tried to keep up with her energy but it was hard.

"I'm going to school, I'm fine. Doc says I can't work though." I smiled as best I could but it wasn't easy. Have you ever tried getting out of a truck on crutches with one arm? Have fun.

"I'll help anyway I can. I can carry your books around, and get your lunch and, whatever you need."

"Thanks Kags."

"I hung out with Miroku and Song yesterday. I didn't tell them about you being in the hospital. I just said you couldn't hang out with us."

"Thanks." she didn't know Miroku had a clue, but that was okay. Sango didn't need to know. In fact, the less everybody knew the better. I was pissed off that now Kagome had some grasp on the situation. I would have to tell her everything eventually. But she didn't seem to want to ask yet. Which I appreciated.

"Come on," she put her arm around my shoulder (which must have been awkward for her, seeing as how I'm taller and I had my arms stretched out with crutches). "Let's get you upstairs and get you some rest." I laughed slightly, nodding in agreement. Sometimes, she really did remind me of my mother. I liked that.

~*~

"Yash? What the hell happened to you?" Sango asked as I walked into lunch. I had been purposely avoiding people, as much as possible, all morning.

I laughed it off, "Got into a fight." I said in my usual carefree tone.

"You sure got your ass kicked.” She said back.

"Ya think?"

Kagome came over a few seconds later. I felt bad having her carry my books, but she wouldn't let me do anything. She put the bag on the floor and my lunch on the table.

"All they had was the vanilla yogurt with the Oreo topping to put on. But I wouldn't put on the Oreo Hun, the chunks could cause problems." she sat down and smiled at Sango and Miroku.

"Hey guys!" she said cheerily.

"Hey." they replied in unison.

"Isn't it your day to sit with Kik?" Sango asked, chewing a bite of her tuna fish sandwich.

"Yeah, I don't want to though." I said as Kagome fed me another spoonful of yogurt. "You know I can feed myself again." I said.

"I know. I just think its fun." she smiled taking a drink from her water.

"Ha ha." I smiled at her. She really was an amazingly sweet girl.

"If that's what it takes to get a girl to feed you, sign me up." Miroku said mischievously, with a glance to Sango.

"Keh. Like I'd feed you." Sango rolled her eyes, covering a smile.

"Sango, my pet, you wouldn't feed me if I were incapable of doing it myself?" Miroku asked, feigning distress.

Sango looked thoughtful for a second, then turned to face Miroku. "Hmm, nope."

"You tease me dear." Sango stuck her tongue out at Miroku, "Is that an offer?"

"Perv!"

I shook my head at the two. As Mr. Whit told us to go back to class Kagome threw away my trash and grabbed my book bag, helping me stand up. I thanked her and we began hobbling to class. I was pulled aside by Miroku.

"Yash." he began softly, looking around to make sure Kagome and Sango weren't listening. "Did, is this because of, you know?" he asked, being quite stealth.

"It's cool Miroku. Don't worry." I smiled, patting him on the shoulder.

"Seriously dude. Is it?"

I shook my head, not to say it wasn't, but to inform him he was worrying too much. "Don't worry." I repeated.

"I do worry man."

"You're going to be late." Mr. Whit walked over and clapped his hands in his usual fashion. "Chop chop."

"Later Miroku."

"Peace Yash."

The rest of the day went normal. I finished psych and math before meeting Kagome at the door. She had left her class a few minutes early to meet me at mine. She had been doing that all day. We walked out to the parking lot with Sango and Miroku. I couldn't drive myself to school, obviously, so I had Kagome work out a deal. She convinced her mom to let her use the station wagon for a few weeks, and her mother could use my Pontiac. I was going to teach Kagome to drive my car, but it would be difficult.

"Bye Yash. Get better!" Sango hugged me and smiled.

"Take care man." Miroku and I did our handshake, which was significantly harder than usual.

"I'll see ya tomorrow." I smiled.

"Bye guys!" Kagome waved as they replied with a 'bye Kags' and got into Miroku's Durango.

Kagome put my books in the back and helped me into the passengers seat, putting my crutches in the back as well. She got into the drivers seat, helped me buckle, and we were ready to go.

"So, what did Miroku want to say?" she asked curiously.

"When?" I asked.

"At lunch."

"Oh. He was just talking about nothing. Shit!"

"What?" Kagome asked, slightly panicky.

"I forgot to take my meds at lunch."

"No you didn't." she smiled. "I know you can't swallow, so I crushed them up into your yogurt."

"That's why it tasted nasty." she laughed slightly.

"Yeah. Sorry about that."

"Thank you." I chuckled with her.

The rest of the ride was silent for the most part. It was weird to not be in the drivers seat but to be riding with Kagome, as a passenger. I enjoyed the scenery though.

"Home sweet home right?" she asked, smiling as we pulled into the driveway. "Wait a sec, I'll help you out." she got out of the car and ran to the other side, opening my door.

"Thanks." I got up, not easily, and stood on my own (well, without her, but with my much needed crutches).

She went into the back seat and grabbed my bag for me, then walked me up to the house. We went upstairs to my room. She set the bag down and I sat down on the bed, tired of moving.

"You should get some rest." She said, sitting on my desk chair, across from me. "Want me to read to you?" she asked as though talking to a child.

"I draw the line at people reading to me." I said with a playful grin.

"Then take a nap, get some rest. The doctor said you need -"

"Lots of rest. Yeah, I know." I dropped my crutches to the floor and laid back on the bed.

"I'm going to go and let you sleep." She said, standing up.

"Will you stay?" I asked, grabbing her hand to keep her with me. "Just for a little while?"

"Sure." she turned and sat on the floor.

"You can sit up here with me." I said, moving over the best that I could.

"You need your space, and your rest Yash." she held my hand in both of hers and kissed it. "Sleep."
