Chapter 16: Three words to change the heart

~*~ Kag's Vantage Point ~*~
"All right, come on kids. I know it's vacation and all, but really, you have to sleep sometime." my father walked into the room, just as I was about to teach Souta a thing or two about calling me a girl.
"Aww, dad." We whined collectively, sounding very much like we had never been separated.
"Now, now kiddos." my father turned off the tv. "Bed." I smiled brightly.
I missed being told what to do. I missed seeing my father's face smiling at me as I joked around with my brother. I missed . . . everything. I stood up and then helped Inuyasha get off the floor. He thanked me and I handed him his crutches. I looked over at my father.
"Um, so where is the nearest hotel." it was a low card to play, but I didn't feel right just saying 'so where are we going to sleep?'.
"Oh hush Kagome." now I remembered where I got it from. "You and Inuyasha can stay in the guest room. I'm sorry we only have one. Is it okay that you stay together?"
I felt a slight blush, after all we hadn't gone far, and I didn't know how awkward it would be. "Yeah, that's no problem dad."
"Great. Follow me. Souta, lights out in fifteen minutes."
"Sure dad."
My father led us through the hallway, passed a sleeping Hayleigh, passed a few bathrooms, and to the end of the hall. The room was slightly larger than the others, but obviously not used much. It was dusty, and dark, and not very well decorated.
"Sorry, it's not really used much."
"That's fine dad." I reassured him. "We'll only be staying a day or so, until you get sick of us." I flicked on the light switch, seeing the room in full light. It wasn't bad.
"Stay as long as you want. Really." my dad put his hand on my shoulder.
"Thanks daddy."
"Anything princess."
"Here, I brought extra sheets and pillow cases." Kaydee said, handing them to me.
"Oh, thanks Kaydee."
"You're welcome Kagome." she smiled.
"Mom, have you seen my new tooth brush?" Souta asked, walking up to our congregation.
"Yeah Hun, it's in the big bathroom next to Hayleigh. Careful, she's sleeping."
"'Kay."
I noted that Souta called Kaydee 'Mom'. I didn't know if he was doing that because it was easier, because it was dad's wishes, or he just didn't really care about mom anymore.
"Well, it's been a long drive down, we should get some sleep." I said, yawning involuntarily as I said it.
"Yeah, we shouldn't keep you up." my father said, kissing the top of my head. "Night Kagome." he shook Inuyasha's hand. "Inuyasha." he said formally.
"Sir." Inuyasha bowed his head slightly. "Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely home."
"Drop the formalities son. You're always welcome here, whether Kagome is with you or not. If you're a friend to my daughter, your a son to me." I smiled at my dad. He was the sweetest man on earth. Most of the time.
"Thank you Sir."
"Jai."
"Thank you Jai." Inuyasha corrected.
"That's the ticket. Come on Kaydee." he put his hand on Kaydee's back and gestured they should leave.
"It's great meeting you Kagome, and you Inuyasha." she hugged us, I thought she was crying. "Welcome back."
"Thanks Kaydee." I said.
"Thank you." Inuyasha repeated.
"Night." Kaydee and my dad walked away and into their room. I closed the bedroom door and looked at the layout.
"Okay, I can set up a few sheets on the floor, and snag a pillow, making sure you're all propped up, and then we can get some sleep." I said, walking over to the bed.
"What?" Inuyasha asked, coming up behind me.
"I said I'll make the beds and we can get some sleep." I abbreviated.
"I'm not letting you sleep on the floor. I can do it."
"Shut up. You cannot sleep on the floor, look at you. You are sleeping on the bed. Deal with it." I started unfolding the sheets.
"No, I'm not going to be like that."
"Fine, then we'll switch off tomorrow." I said, hoping that would pacify until I could come up with another reason for tomorrow.
"No. Because I know you, and you are not going to let me sleep on the floor tomorrow either. So, therefore we either both sleep on the bed, or I sleep on the floor." Inuyasha put his crutches against the wall, leaning on the wall for support, and stared at me. He was trying to stare me down.
It worked.
"Fine! Geez. You're impossible, you do know that right?" I asked, laying out the sheets on the bed.
"Yep." he smiled, laying on the bed. "But for some reason, you like me anyway." he said, preparing for sleep.
"Yeah, I do." I got into bed next to him. "It's a curse."
He kissed me on the cheek. "Night Kaggie."
"Good night Yash."
~*^ Yashie's Perspective ^*~
I rolled over, or tried to, when I felt something next to me. I noted it was Kagome as my eyes adjusted to the light. The room was hazy and I couldn't see; then, I realized it was my hair in front of my face. I brushed it away and looked down at Kagome. Her head was resting on my chest, and she was hugging me. I smiled down at her, not wanting to wake her up. I tried very carefully to move with out her waking up, but that seemed almost impossible. I lifted her left hand off me and I tried to slide off the bed.
Kagome moved slightly, making a noise as though she were waking. I stilled myself, trying to let her sleep. She stretched and rolled over facing the opposite direction. I sighed and got up. I hopped out of the room, not wanting my crutches to make noise when I picked them up.
I went to the bathroom, checking my appearance in the mirror. I looked like hell. I needed a shower, and a hair cut. I splashed water on my face to wake myself up better and went back to the room. I closed the door softly, and began limping back to bed.
"You think you are so sneaky?" I heard Kagome's voice call. I looked up and saw her smiling face.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to wake you." I quickly apologized.
"You didn't." she reassured me.
"That's good." I said as I sat down on the bed.
"However, your snoring is a whole different issue." she joked.
"I do not snore, thank you very much." I said, quite smugly.
"Oh, you wanna bet twenty on that?" she smiled.
I didn't respond, I only stuck my tongue out. She laughed and shook her head at me.
"So mature." she said. "I'm going back to bed."
"Night then." I replied, letting her go back to sleep.
"Kagome! Yash! Wake up!" Souta knocked on the door, very loudly, and hollered through. "I'm coming in!" he announced only a second before the door flew open.
"Souta! It's not even noon yet, why are you awake?!" Kagome questioned, sitting up.
"Because I'm young and have more energy than you! No wake up! I want you to meet all my friends! You and Yash! Lets go, lets go, lets go!"
"Souta," Kagome whined. "Maybe Yash doesn't feel like it." she looked at me as though telling me to agree.
"Nah Kags, I don't mind." I smirked at her and I thought she was going to kill me.
"See Kags. Come on."
"Fine. Let me get dressed and get something to eat then we'll meet your friends."
"YAY!"
*~*
We went to the park with Souta where all of his friends were. He introduced us to his friends, I didn't really make it a point to note who they were. They all looked at me as though I were the coolest thing, which kind of made my ego swell to be honest. Kagome rolled her eyes a lot at Souta's declarations of my 'coolness'.
"And he'd show you how awesome he is at boarding, but his leg is broken and so is his arm." Souta proclaimed. "And he got that way because of an extreme trick he was doing while boardin'." Souta embellished. I didn't bother correcting him, whatever he wanted to believe was fine with me.
"That is awesome!" one of his little friends announced.
"Yeah, I know. That's why he's the guy I look up to."
"Well isn't that just the cutest thing." Kagome said, speaking for perhaps the first time since we got there. "Isn't Yash just the coolest?" Kagome asked, making all the kids agree with her.
"Thanks Kags." I said, giving her a sarcastic smile.
"No probs." she smiled widely back to me.
"Come on, lets show Yash what we can do." another little kid said.
"Yeah." came the collective answer.
Kagome and I watched the kids do a few bunny hops and some just skated around. They weren't all that bad for little kids, but they had a lot of practice they could do. I taught one kid how to nose grind; well, the best I could. It would have been easier if I could have demonstrated.
~* Kaggie's POV *~
I watched Inuyasha teaching the kids how to skate and it made me feel . . . weird. I felt so proud of him. Not that I wasn't usually proud of him anyway; but, for some reason, watching him with Souta, and all of Souta's friends, made me really happy. I took out my cell phone, amazed at my reception range, and dialed information.
The woman on the other end asked for the name and location of the person to be looked up. "Watashi, Sesshomaru. Vanna, Georgia." I said, trying to speak clearly. The woman then informed me that there was no 'Watashi, Sesshomaru in Vanna, Georgia.' I thanked her and hung up. I wanted to find out where Sesshomaru lived.
"Maybe he took his mothers name." I looked over at Yash and saw him giving Souta a lesson on proper jumping techniques. I didn't want to ruin his happiness so I waited.
A few hours later Inuyasha came over to me, sitting down and sighing. "Phew, I didn't think I was ever going to be able to sit down. Those kids are hyper." he said. He looked at me with concern. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." I answered quickly.
"Liar. What's up?"
I didn't know. I was happy that he looked happy. But I wanted him to see his brother, and I knew he didn't really want to. So, I bit the bullet. "Nothing really." I said, smiling sweetly.
"Promise?"
I couldn't lie to him. It was impossible. He had so many trust issues, and so many worries for such a young person. "No." I said uneasily. "Yash, I really want you to see your brother." he gave me a look, "I know you don't want to." I added quickly. "It's just that . . . I think that closure will help you."
"Fine." he stood up, "Hey Souta," he called.
"Yeah?"
"You okay to walk home by yourself?"
"Yeah, no problem!" Souta answered.
"'Kay. We're gonna head out then."
"Okay! Thanks Yash!"
"Your welcome Souta." he looked down at me. "You comin'?" he asked, extending his hand to me.
"Uh, yeah, sure." I said, somewhat confused by the fact that he wasn't fighting it.
"Where does he live?" he asked.
"I don't know. I tried information, but they don't have a listing." I said.
"Can I?" he asked, holding out his hand for my phone.
I nodded, handing him my phone. He dialed information and waited. "Yutas, Sesshomaru, Vanna, Georgia." he said. I tried to commit Yutas to memory. It must have been his mother's maiden name. "Thank you." he hung up and began dialing.
He waited, while the phone rang. "Hello Sir, I am from Chess Magazine Monthly," he waited. "I know you don't have a subscription Sir, I am calling to ask if you would like one. . . . No Sir. Is this twenty two fourteen Washington Street? No. Twelve Nineteen? Dear me, I'm sorry to have bothered you Sir. Have a good day." Inuyasha hung up the phone, tossing it to me, and smiled. "He lives on twelve nineteen Washington Street in Vanna. We better go if we're going to make it back before night fall."
"Right." I said, still semi-mesmerized by how easy that was.
"Should we stop by the house and tell your dad?" he asked as we got into the car.
"Nah, I'll call him or Kaydee."
We got into the car and drove off. I didn't know how to get to Vanna and I didn't really think we'd get back in time for night fall. I thought we might have to stay with Sesshomaru, or at a hotel.
We drove for hours. I got lost a few times and we would have to double back. Finally we arrived in Vanna. Inuyasha had hardly spoken two words since we left the skate park. I hoped he wasn't secretly mad at me. Then again, if I knew him at all, he was just anxious about seeing his brother. I would be too. I was anxious about seeing my family. There are some things in life that just need closure; and I thought this was one of those things for Yash. I often stuck my nose where it didn't belong, but it usually worked out.
"Whoa, hold up." he said. I started slowing down. "It's that one." he said, pointing to a huge Victorian style house.
"Holy," I said. "Is he the only one living there?"
"I don't know. I hope not."
I parked the car on the side of the street and we got out. The house was yellow, almost like the color of the lines painted on the road. It had elegant French doors, and a lovely garden on the side, and it seemed to have a stone pool in the back. There was a balcony above the roman arches that led into the front door as well. We walked up the rock walkway, in between the tulip beds, and rang the door bell. I didn't release his arm, for his own comfort as well as mine.
"Greetings." a short balding man answered the door. I didn't mean to have a look of distaste, but he kind of looked like a toad.
"Hello," Inuyasha spoke, his voice over flowing with confidence. "Is Sesshomaru at home?"
"May I ask who you are?" he asked, his tone still arrogant.
"Kagome, and Inuyasha."
"One moment please, I'll announce you." he closed the door and I heard his footsteps echo into the house.
The door opened a few seconds later. "I'm sorry, Jaken has absolutely no manners." a tall black haired woman was standing in the door way now. She was wearing a fabulous dressing gown, and her hair was done up quite elaborately. "Please, please come in. Are you friends with my husband?" she asked as we walked in.
"Husband?" Inuyasha said, somewhat stunned. "Um, no, yeah. I guess."
"You're just all kinds of sure about that aren't you?" she smiled again, laughing airily. "Well come in. We're entertaining tonight so ignore the caterers and maids. Follow me." she motioned as she led us into what was apparently the living room. She didn't really walk though, she seemed to glide, as though she were floating on air.
"You have the most lovely home Ma'am." I said, looking at all of the antique decorations and lovely rooms.
"Oh, thank you." she said, looking around the room as though she forgot what it looked like. "Oh, how rude, my name is Kagura Yutas." she said, bowing slightly, "Sesshomaru should be down any second." she said, sitting down in a high winged back chair. "Please, have a seat." she motioned to the couch. "I don't mean to be nosey," she started.
"Skateboard accident." Inuyasha answered.
"Oh. Sorry. You must get that quite a deal."
"Yeah. It's okay Ma'am."
"Please, call me Kagura, or at the very least Mrs. Yutas."
"Thank you." Inuyasha said.
"So, how do you know Sesshomaru?" she asked. Twirling a piece of dangling hair around her finger.
"Um, did you know Sesshomaru has a brother?" Inuyasha answered, trying to avoid her question.
"Oh, yes, terrible tragedy really." she said. "Oh, Jaken, could you bring some drinks for the guests, and a gin and tonic for me. Thanks." she looked back to us. "Did you know his brother?"
"Uh, yeah. Why was it a tragedy?" he asked, not knowing what had allegedly happened.
"Well, a boy that young committing suicide, it's horrible. Should never have happened." Jaken was back with the drinks. "Thank you Jaken." she handed us two drinks, that were apparently Kool-Aid.
"Thank you." Inuyasha and I said together.
She smiled. "What did you say your names were?" she asked.
"I'm Kagome." I said, not knowing if Inuyasha wanted to reveal his at this point.
"Kagura?" I heard a mans voice ask.
"In the sitting room darling." she called back. "That would be Sesshomaru now." she turned to us and said.
"Kagura, where is Rin?" he asked, not realizing he had guests.
"She went out side to play in the hot tub. Don't fret dear, Yura will watch her."
"I'm not fretting." his tone was very monotonous.
"We have guests. Apparently a friend to your brother." she nodded her head over toward us.
~*~ Inu's POV ~*~
The look on Sesshomaru's face was heart wrenching. It was a look of pure fright. My big brother, the man I looked up to more than my own father, was looking at me as though I were dead. Which, apparently to him, I was. I waited to see if he gave himself away, or if he was waiting for me to lay the cards on the table.
"It's nice to meet you." he said, his tone softening only to the trained ear. "I'm sorry your friend died. That was many years ago, what could you want from me?"
"Umm, actually," I stood up, Kagome finally letting go of my arm. "I was wondering if we might speak in private Mr. Yutas."
He nodded swiftly and led me to another room in the house. It was a library/study apparently. Sesshomaru closed the door and locked it. I noted that he locked it but thought nothing of it. He sat down behind a desk, closing the lap top open on it, and motioned to the other chair on the other side of the desk.
"I'm sorry, you seem to know me, but what is your name?" he asked.
"Sesshomaru," I ignored him, "What happened to your brother?"
"I'm not really sure. Not that it's any of your business, but I got a phone call from our father about, four years ago, that Inuyasha had committed suicide. He was only thirteen when he died." Sesshomaru said, he looked sad about it. "Our father was abusive, and our mother killed herself, I suspect he couldn't handle the abuse. Again, not that it's any of your business."
"Sess, why didn't you go back for him? You said the night before you left, 'Inuyasha, you stay strong, because someday I'll come for you and we can get out of here, just the two of us'. Why didn't you keep that promise?"
"I couldn't -"
"Keh."
"By the time I was set up down here, ready for Inuyasha, he had killed himself." Sesshomaru stopped suddenly. "I'm sorry Inuyasha. I should have come for you."
I snapped up, looking at him in shock. How did he know it was me? "How?"
"'Keh'. That was your first word Inuyasha. Father said you had killed yourself. Why would he do that?"
"I don't know Sess. I thought you just, had a life here and didn't care anymore." I hadn't realized how much that hurt, but now that I was sitting face - to - face with my only brother, I felt sadness edging into my soul.
"Never. Inuyasha, you are my brother, and I would have never left you in that place. I should have taken you with me to start. I'm so sorry."
I had never heard Sesshomaru say he was sorry about anything. There are some miracals that are unfathomable, and until that moment that was one of them. "Sess," I didn't know what to say. "I missed you."
"I missed you too Inuyasha." he hugged me tightly and I thought my ribs might crack from the force. I made a mental note to thank Kagome until the day we died. Somehow, all of my pain meant nothing, and I knew that someone had cared for me all along. I started crying.
~*~ Kags standpoint ~*
Kagura and I talked for a few minutes after Inuyasha and Sesshomaru left. I worried about what would happen. Then Kagura brought me out of my thoughts. "Care to meet Rin?"
"Sure." I smiled, not knowing who 'Rin' was.
Kagura led me out onto the back porch and outside to the pool area. I noticed a little girl with short curly black hair floating on a dragon float in the hot tub. She had a smile on her face as wide as a smile could be and she was splashing at the butler.
"Look Mommy! Jaken's all wet!" she said, still grinning.
"Yes he is. But he doesn't look amused honey, maybe you should stop." Kagura said, walking over toward the little girl.
"No. Rin not stop unless daddy says." she pouted, splashing some more.
"Then I'll get daddy." Kagura said, walking back toward me. "She is such a handful, won't do anything unless Sesshomaru tells her to. But that's my little princess."
"She's so cute. How old is she?" I asked, waving to Rin, who was no longer interested in splashing Jaken but rather looking perplexed at the newcomer.
"Two." she answered fondly. "She'll be three in May."
"Really? May what?" I asked, purely because mine was in May.
"May twenty ninth." she said.
"Wow, only four days passed mine." I said, still looking at Rin.
"Ah, the beauty of being a Gemini." Kagura laughed. "Mine is June sixth, so we are all of the same mind eh?"
"Apparently." I smiled.
"Sesshomaru is a Leo, but you'd never guess it by the way he acts. The only way you could ever tell is the fact that he's so successful because he's willing to go out and get what he wants." I nodded, taking in the information.
"Inuyasha's a Sagittarius, and the only time you can tell is when his temper runs out." I laughed before catching myself and realizing I had given Inuyasha away.
"Inuyasha? Sesshomaru's Inuyasha?"
I nodded, no sense in lying now, "But please don't tell Sesshomaru, I don't know what Inuyasha wants to do." I said quickly.
"The secret is safe Kagome."
"Thank you."
"Kagura!" Sesshomaru came outside, with Inuyasha close in tow. "Drinks all around! My baby brother is alive! Jaken, tell the caterers to prepare lunch for our guests and hurry. Rin, angel," Sesshomaru picked up his daughter out of the hot tub. "Rin, this is your uncle Inuyasha, the one who I thought had died." he said, holding Rin out to Yash.
"Hello Rin." Inuyasha said, shaking her hand.
"She is two." Sesshomaru said. "She has heard all about her uncle of course."
"Uncy?" Rin said, in the cutest tone possible.
"Hello Rin," Inuyasha said, his tone gentle. "It's very nice to meet you." Inuyasha took her hand in his and shook it slowly.
"Uncy!" Rin suddenly jumped away from Sesshomaru and hugged Inuyasha. I giggled at the action. Inuyasha held on to her and hugged her closely.
"Well she likes you." Sesshomaru said, his voice becoming monotone again. "Shall we have some lunch?"
~* Yashie's POV *~*
"Let's not wait this long to see each other again." Sesshomaru whispered in my ear as he hugged me good bye.
"No. Let's not." I hugged him back and Kagome handed me my crutches. "Thanks." I said.
"It was wondeful meeting all of you." Kagome said, smiling and shaking hands. "I hope we can all get together again some day."
"That would be most pleasent." Kagura said.
"Bye bye Uncy and Aunty." Rin waved as she sat on Sess's shoulders.
"Bye bye." Kagome and I waved to them.
As we walked down the walk way Kagome said, "We could have stayed longer. Or you could have stayed the night and I could have picked you up on the way back to Maine."
"It's cool Kags." I smiled, I truly smiled. I had smiled a lot since I met Kagome, but, for perhaps the first time in many many years, I had smiled more than I ever thought possible.
"Are you sure? We haven't left yet." she said, buckling her seat belt.
"Are you trying to get rid of me?" I asked jokingly, fastening my own seat belt.
"Yes. Get out." She said in a serious tone, just before she smiled and rolled her eyes.
"Lets go." I laughed.
"Fine."
~*
It was New Years Eve. We were still at Kagome's father's house. We were going to leave in the morning. We all waited in the living room for the ball to drop from New York City. We raised our glasses, all those under 21 drinking fruit punch, and prepared for the count down. It was exciting for some reason, to tick away another year of life. It's not that a year was ending, but a year was beginning. A year, in which for the first time, I didn't feel depressed. It was going to be a good year.
"Two . . . one! Happy new year!" we all cheered, taking drinks from our glasses. We all sat back down on the sofas, and continued the conversation we had been having previous to the countdown.
"Okay, New Years Resolutions . . . "
"We aren't suppose to say them out loud Dad. They are personal." Kagome said in a firm tone.
"Well in this house we say them out loud." her father looked back at her.
"Fine." Kagome pouted, but everyone knew she wasn't really upset.
"Who's to go first?"
~*
Kagome and I walked up to the room, she closed the door behind her and yawned. As she opened her eyes from the yawn I surprised her by picking her up and spinning her around.
"Ahh!" she screamed and I set her down kissing her. "Yash, you shouldn't do that, you could further injure yourself. Are you feeling okay? You might have hurt yourself again -" I kissed her again, silencing her. She seemed to accept the kiss and opened her mouth to me. I smiled and pulled away from the kiss.
"Kagome," I started.
"Yash?" she asked.
"I want to say something . . ."
"I'm listening." I could tell she was confused, and I felt my nerves rattle.
"Kagome, thank you. Thank you for bringing me here, meeting your family, seeing Sess. I couldn't have asked for anything better, anything more. You've made me so happy. You always do. Kagome, I love you." I had never really felt love before. I loved my brother and my mother. But not in this way, thank God. I had never loved the girls I dated. But I loved Kagome. Now she knew, I didn't know how that would change things.
I felt her arms wrap around me and I heard her sniffle. "I love you Yash! I'm so glad you feel the same way! I love you!" she bounced slightly with excitment and my arms wrapped around her waist.
It was definately going to be a good year.

~*~ Kag's Vantage Point ~*~
"All right, come on kids. I know it's vacation and all, but really, you have to sleep sometime." my father walked into the room, just as I was about to teach Souta a thing or two about calling me a girl.

"Thank you Jai." Inuyasha corrected.
