Two Loves , one Heart...
Kagome read over the letter in her hand once more, then crumbled it in her palm. "I refuse to go." She said out loud even though there was no one to hear her. It was mid-evening and most were sleeping, but not Kagome. She stood from the stool and the bottom her lavender night gown tumbled to the wood polished floor. She made her way to her bedroom window and looked over the shadowy figures outside. "This is foolish, of course my cousin Kikyo would love to go to such a celebration, but not I. I am not much for hanging among royalty, but someone from this household needs to honor this families name, and since the one time I wish for my cousins presents she is not here." Kagome let out a frustrated sigh and turned back to her vanity to finish her nightly routine. "My mother is no condition for such an event and I can play a lady but despise it, and Kikyo is to busy out getting courted."
Kagome sighs once more and then slams the invitation down onto the tables smooth wooden surface. "And... if no one attends, the royal court will get suspicious that this family is not well handled, Which it tis not." She said under her breath. "So I must go." Kagome glanced at her self in the long length mirror and then climbed into the all to familiar bed and snuggled the thickly stuffed pillow. "It is going to be a long day and night tomorrow, since the ball is tomorrow night, to find the two prince’s a bride or mate if you want to be technical and someone from each middle and upper class family is requested to send one person preferably a women, human or demon to the celebration." Kagome buried her head down further into the pillow’s softness and the dreamless sleep soon to her.
The morning sun soon came and stole the night away. Kagome rolled over taking the pillow with her to block out the sun’s bright rays of light streaming though her bedroom window. "Why did this day have to come?" She mumbled into the pillow’s soft material. Kagome sighed a heavy sigh and rolled out to the edge of the comfy bed, she did not wish to leave. She gave a groan as she walked over to long length mirror from the night before. "This is all her great grandmothers fault for finding out that she had miko powers. A little over sixty years ago this family was known as commoners, but now..." Kagome trailed off with her words as she looked around the beautiful room with anything from velvet curtains to painted tapestries. "Oh well to go to a celebration once in awhile is worth to keep all this I suppose." She grabbed the brush from vanity drawer and began to work her magic on her tangled mass of midnight black hair. Once that task was complete she went to her closet and pulled out a ruby red kimono. ‘this shall do for today, well until my training hour comes that is...now for a kimono for this stupid masked ball.’
Kagome thought to her self as she skimmed over her fancy kimono’s. She finally pulled one to her liking that she had not worn for years. ‘I hope it still fits.’ She said in her mind as she searched over the beautiful gown for any flaw why should not wear it. It was a long sleeved dark blue kimono with a shimmering ring of jewels around the neck line matching gems on both sleeve ends and on the bottom hem. To conclude the dresses perfection a vine of roses went from the right shoulder to the curving of the left bottom side of the stylish kimono. "It shall do." As if she was reassuring herself . Kagome laid it on her bed for tonight and took out matching sandals and the ribbon to bind her waist. "Well since that done, I shall go down stairs and find some breakfast to settle my uneasy stomach." "Kagome quickly ran down the mahogany stairs she used to play on as a child and also fell down once. She smiled at her memories and jumped over the last couple steps landing gracefully on the red carpeted floor. "I wonder what are cook has prepared today." Kagome said out loud. She started walking in a fast pace walking toward the kitchen instead of the dinning room where almost everyone took there meals, ‘ except me’ Kagome said to herself as she rounded the corner to the entrance of the kitchen. Once there maid bustled about as usual cleaning dishes preparing meals .
Kagome found her nanny which was really the cook and came up behind her and stole a hug.
"Kagome my child ye are up a bit late." "Yes I know nanny, I was picking out a kimono for you know what tonight." " Its not that bad child, its a simple masked ball." Nanny was a elderly women in her sixties her hair a slivery gray and she stood a couple inches shorter then Kagome and slightly chubby. "You just reminded me nanny its a masked ball. I have not a mask"
"Ask ye bother I am sure he has one ye can use from one of the plays he has done in the past couple years." "Alright ." Kagome said as she stole a bread roll and kissed her nanny’s cheek and ran out the kitchen before anyone could tell her a word. After Kagome finished the bread roll she took another flight of stairs that lead to the east wing where her bother most likely still slept. Once she stood in front of the door she gave it a knock not hearing a answer she entered and saw her younger bother Sota passed out on his table over a bunch of paper work.
She walked over to him and brushed his bangs away. ‘Since father died Sota has tried to take everything on his shoulders that is why he is always so exhausted he is to young for this he barely had a childhood but its by law the next male family that is the closes to the deceased father is to take charge which was Sota when he was eleven.’ Sota began to stir and instantly sat up seeing is sister along with a piece of paper stuck to his cheek. Kagome couldn’t help but giggle as she removed the paper from his red face. "good morning Sota, sleep well?" Kagome asked as she brushed his bangs away once more. "Kagome.... what time is it?" Close to mid-morning" Sota sighed and plopped is head back on the desk. "You work Yourself to much Sota." "It has been my job since father died and you know it." Sota said sitting back up.
"Yes I know but I wish it was not you are still so young and have had very little fun training needed since you are so busy with this." Kagome pointed to all the paper work.
Don’t worry Kagome I am fine and what brings you to my room?" Kagome shook her head to clear it . "Oh, I was wondering if I could borrow one of your masks from your plays." Sota raised a thin eye brow "For what." He asked curiously. "That ball is going on tonight and it is a masked ball and i have not a mask." "You are going alone Kagome?" Sota asked as he rose and went to one of the boxes that piled near the near the window. "Yes Sota, there is no one to escort me and you are to busy." "Kagome... you know i hate you going out at night alone...there are many dangers out side this castle." He stated as he dug though one of the boxes and finally found what he was looking for. "Here." He said as he held up a black mask covered in sequins.
"It is very pretty." Kagome said staring at it as it sparkled in the dim light . He gave her a smile and held it out to her. "I mean it Kagome I want you to be careful I would never forgive myself it something bad befell on you." Kagome took the mask from him and reassured him. Kagome gave him one of her smiles and ran out though the large open oak door. Sota watched as she left and then sat down to go back to work.
